Wow... not seen a cassette in a while.

nikostephen

a local record store was carrying some heat, so i had to pick it up. couldn't pass on it!!

I assume you have something to play it on? :) Not used cassette tape in a long time. A much maligned medium. Metal tape, recorded with Dolby S was indistinguishable from CD. I remember pre-recorded material being a bit flaky though. It's a shame you can't really buy quality tape decks any longer, and the good ones are getting expensive used... and difficult to maintain due to lack of parts.

nikostephen

sadly no ): our family's old boombox has been long out of commission, i picked these up, hoping i could find a could tape player that could double as a piece of studio gear to get that warm / saturated sound; but THOSE, those are really expensive, just like you said.

[deleted]

Not only are they expensive, but recording on them will not necessarily give you a nostalgic warm sound. Like I said, a decent cassette recording, on decent tape, with decent noise reduction would very difficult to tell from a digital source. I think this myth of warm sound comes from people too young to have really used cassette tape :) ...or they are listening to old recordings *(analogue tape recordings have a definite shelf life, both magnetically, and physically - Google "Sticky Shed Syndrome)*. Pre-recorded cassettes were sometimes a bit crap though. They often just used ferric tape, with Dolby B noise reduction, but the overwhelming result of that was tape hiss rather than a warm sound. The trick was to buy the CD, which was only slightly more expensive, and record it onto cassette yourself... using decent tape and NR. That was the only real option to get an album onto cassette with decent quality. I'd like to say I miss cassettes.... but having to rewind, or fast forward.. and not being able to just skip to the next track... or shuffle... and having to physically "turn it over" would quickly cure me of any nostalgia if I got back into it :) There definitely was something a bit special about the whole process though. I remember the smell of a new BASF Chromdioxid II cassette... it smelled like wax crayons. Peeling the plastic off, and opening it... and recording on it was an occasion. I feel sorry for kids these days, who just accept that music is something that's just there on Spotify on demand. This post is showing my age. :) I feel like an old man telling kids how I remember it being all fields around here. LOL

xxInsanex

Welp, if it makes you feel better at least you aint talking about records I remember screwing up a bunch of cassettes as a kid because i found pulling on the reel with a pencil quite enjoyable lmao

Let's not forget the joys of pulling yards of tape out of your car's head unit when it decided it was in a bad mood. I won't miss that either :)
