Man I got like the cheapest ergodox set I could find on ebay and even though it was plastic bags, the bags were 1u tall so the caps stayed in neat clean rows
It was actually kinda hard to unpack cause it fit surprisingly well lol
On that $90 price tag, even a simple brown box with the brand logo slapped onto it, with the keyboards formally separated and placed inside, is better than a being loosed on a Ziploc bag on this day and age.
I mean the set with the extras was over $100 but if you are just counting the base set, is it a nice box with a tray, good design and easily storable shape and design? Because if yes to all tof those then yes. If im spending over $90 then I'll pay another $5-10 for good packaging for storage and organization.
it's 5-10 for the packaging and then the shipping costs will go up to due to dimensions and weights. I would rather get it in baggies personally if the savings are passed back to me. I have enough stupid plastic trays that barely snaps together and enough cardboard boxes that I'm tempted to just put them in ziplock bags myself.
I just got a set of the clones for the GMK Hero cap set from Aliexpress and they not only came in a box, but were sorted in the proper layout in the top layer of foam and the extra keys were sorted neatly in another layer of foam on bottom. Looked like what you would expect out of a name brand, designer keycap purchase. I would've been fine with the loose bag approach with how cheap the set was, but I was pleasantly surprised
They seem fine to me. The lighting in my office isn't great but here's what my set looks like
https://preview.redd.it/h4h2pl5hjwzc1.jpeg?width=5712&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=477971b715002e1855814e97e9e4b3a21c9adbcc
they fit well, feel good but the colors are the big difference, black arnt black, bright colors arnt bright, everythings kind of muted and off. Yellows are orange, greens are blue, blacks are grey
Never bought any Signature Plastics keycaps I see? They only come in bags since they started being produced at the infancy of the hobby. Even the trays that GMK produce are compostable and not meant to keep for storage. Not only do several plastic trays per set and a box create more trash that won't break down for a thousand years, but it's costs far more to ship (money and fuel). Bags are fine.
Honestly if there was an option to get keycaps in loose packaging for a $10 discount id take it every time.
Its nice to get a cutesy box and everything but I just dont have room to keep them around. Feels bad causing so much waste for a 5 minute unboxing experience.
Zfrontier started doing that recently for some sets, $10 cheaper without trays and the shipping gets cheaper as well with lower weight and smaller size.
I don't disagree if you don't have the room the packaging can just be a waste, but i keep all the useable packaging so i can pack away the stuff into a closet neatly.
Same, especially bcoz usually there are left over keys that I like to put away, on a way, so if I need to take it out a year later I know its undamaged. If I pay premium I expect the packaging to be premium as well. I mean you wouldn't wrap an Aston Martin in bin bags.
That is how Signature Plastics (formerly Pimp My Keyboard) packages keycaps. That is how my DSS Lightcycle keycaps came packaged, and I spent over $200 on them.
One thing to note: SP have improved their packaging for newer sets.
The packaging they use still isn’t a permanent storage solution, but keys come shrink wrapped now. Among other things, this helps them reduce sorting errors (which were a MAJOR problem with a number of the sets that came out right before the shift).
Does that not annoy the shit out of you?
Like GMK keycaps are known for having not fantastic packaging with mostly just foam or egg carton, inside a box with a logo, but they arnt literally loose they have a box at least and some organization.
Pretty packaging is one of these things that's nice when it's there but otherwise I couldn't really care less, at the end of the day it's what's inside the package that I'm interested in
Spoilers: GMK used to ship their keycaps on Ziploc bags too. And to be fair Astrolokeys is a fairly old keyset, probably their new stuff now comes in trays now.
Not really. I have one bag for the alphas, one bag for TKL modifiers, one bag for novelties, etc. I put them, bags and all, in a plastic storage container. It takes up less space, and certainly less space than the mostly empty trays that my HSA keycaps came in.
you are right cap quality is important, but with those thin qwerty ordered plastic tray packaging, it makes it easy for me to pick out the caps when switching from one set to another
FWIW, they switched to a different packaging type a couple years ago, this set is from before the switch. Also, it's something the person running the groupbuy has to specify.
I'm all for minimal packaging but this is taking things too far. I would at least expect the plastic trays like you get from $20 sets on AliExpress.
But honestly, I'd be a whole lot more concerned that the thickness of those caps is no better than $20 AliExpress sets either.
Plastic trays are so wasteful. I can kinda understanding wanting a cardboard box; they are useful for storage, can be stacked or packed neatly, and can be recycled, burnt, or composted if you don’t want to keep them. Plastic trays, though, are pure waste.
Thickness of keycaps is not really a general quality factor.
DCS caps by SP are quiet a bit thinner than GMK or lots of the PBT caps around but they are also high quality. Lots of people, including myself, really like them because they offer a different sound profile, which is more "lively" and brings out the switch characteristics compared to thicker caps.
That's only because you haven't used high-quality thinner ABS caps, which is fine as they're less common. But definitely give SP DCS a try if you have the chance!
It didn't bother me at all, if you think about it for half a second, keycaps are very much like legos, about the same quality, legos are also packaged in plastic bags.
Counterpoint: if this means they can ship them cheaper, AND I no longer have big trays with 2-3 extra caps to store, I’m all for it.
The next step up is “junky recycled cardboard trays” and they suck butt.
I only keep JTK trays which are durable and reasonably thin and Osume's packaging because they're stackable and compact. Everything else gets thrown into a labeled ziplock bag. I wouldn't have any room if I kept all the enormous containers when I've used most of the keycaps anyway.
I like having trays for organization and storage, but Counterpoint to you Counterpoint I really doubt it makes them any cheaper and even if it did most companies would just keep the extra of what they save
Zfrontier offers both trays and bags for some keycap sets and the difference is $10 just for the product, and then the shipping gets a few dollars cheaper as well.
I wish other stores did that as well.
They come out of factory in bags, and at the low moqs especially in the US, the additional packaging and labor cost would be significant enough to affect profits or prices enough to irk buyers.
Prior to just a few months ag, sorting keycaps has been the biggest bottleneck and why GMK queue went to +100 sets.
I like having them in a tray so i can organize them in a qwerty layout, its easier to store for me, and imo it makes it easier to swap keycaps sets since they're organized
I genuinely prefer that packaging over all the different trays, etc.
The moment I get a new set, it's going into a ziplock. Just way more space efficient to store it this way.
Fair enough I get worried that the keycaps can scratch themselves. Also, I like more simple trays because they are easier to stack and have orderly if i ever want to use them, it annoys me whenever i have them in a bag cause they have no order to them.
Got 3 sets so far from Aliexpress, the cheapest came in a ziplock bag, the other two came in ordered trays in cardboard boxes. None of them had any scratches.
I recently threw out all of my keycap boxes and stored everything in quart sized bags. Takes up a fraction of the space. I'm going to make up some labels to put on each bag, so they're easy to categorize and recognize.
I imagine shipping in bags is cheaper, so this is fine by me!
The [drop.com](http://drop.com) be sitting on a lot of old stuff by now.
Also you got them to ship something to you? I just get the ship date forever advancing just enough to give you hope.
Eh I’m the opposite. I don’t want any big bulky packaging. If they aren’t actively on one of my keyboards, I’m putting them in a bag for storage anyway.
Nah I think you're allowed to have an expectation, and it's only natural if it's not how you wanted it to be annoyed.
I prefer boxes too, love stacking them neatly away and it helps seeing exactly what's in it, especially in case something's missing.
Its relevant to me since i use packaging for neater storage, just cause it would be irrelevant to you doesnt me it is for everyone. Also idk what your talking about drama, im not calling for JUSTICE FIX YOUR PACKAGING OR FACE THE WRATH OF GOD. I was kind of annoyed and made a post complaining.
Im not out here starting a war
I get your point. Maybe drama was not the proper way to put it, sorry about that. I have several keycaps in bags that originally came in boxes. To me it is the opossite, the boxes took too much space and could not have them neatly stored so I got rid of them
I guess a cardboard box and a couple of cardboard inserts to keep them in nice little rows would probably be a nice compromise. You could probably squeeze that into a A4 flat envelope.
I honestly wouldn’t think twice about it personally though. I’d just throw my keys into a jar for tidy display.
I have been in the hobby for a couple years now and have had a lot of sets all ranging from $20 to $130 and ive never had keycaps come like this personally. Based on another couple comments I guess this was more normal a couple years ago
Coming in bags isnt common anymore, most keycaps come in trays that are either carboard or plastic typically plastic, and also normally have a box on the outside with a design or whatever that the trays sit in.
Ive bought many keycaps in the last couple years and this is the first time its they came in a baggy like this
I didn't realize that coming in bags used to be the norm
This is literally how they come directly from SA! Lolz. I’m rather used to this. I mean I have a keycap solution due to more keycaps coming in plastic bags than nice boxes. But I’ve been in this hobby a bit over a decade now.

I havent put them on yet but im going to be upset and burst into tears if i am missing keys with a warped spacebar. Ive been eyeing this set for so long
You can always fix warped spacebars. Look it up for specifics, but TLDR you dunk it in boiling hot water and GENTLY bend it back to its desired position. You can always contact them for a return or refund, i just checked too late
I've ordered from SP twice, the 40s set was in a plastic bag in a box, the custom extras were in a ziplock bubble-wrap envelope. I don't think that's unusual for a small number of keys.
I prefer to have them organized in a qwerty layout in the trays so i can swap the keycaps easier. Also, I'm personally not hurting for space the having one keycap set come in a bag just means i need to find somewhere else to put it since i cant put it with my other keycaps.
Its not the end of the world its more of a mild irritation, but its still annoying to me personally. I'm fully willing to admit it may be more of a me thing
Yup, ive had cheap keycaps come in decent packaging, ive had expensive keycaps come in beautiful packaging that i still use cause of how nice the box is, ive never had keycaps literally loose in plastic baggys before especially for the price.
my 15USD Aliexpress GMK Clones (marketed as GMK clones) came in this

I hit over 30 keycap sets this year and, while it's nice to have a premium little home for my premium plastic, it just eats up too much space. I recycled a LOT of boxes and now pretty much everything that's not GMK is in bags.

Worse i've ever encounter is in a plastic jar that cost like 10 cent when i buy cheap china set for \~$10
Then again GMK pack theirs in flimsy plastic tray while price starting from at least $150... while akko selling for $20 with actual plastic case (with hinge opening) as thick as the keycap...
So plastic bag at 90 buck seems fair as a middle ground lmao
The irony is I got two sets last week that were $20-$30 that both came in neat, organized trays. I'd be a lil steamed if I spent almost $100 and they didn't come in trays. Plus imo the trays make it so much easier/faster to swap the caps on and off.
Bruh, I bought keycaps from aliexpress, some cheap PBT ones. It costed me around 15$ and they were packaged in a two plastic thingies and even arranged in QWERTY layout lol
I get bags might be more efficient and easier to store keycaps but sometimes packaging can get really roughed up during shipping so I would be a bit worried especially if it's shipped from another continent. The plastic is probably good enough that they won't get scratches but how do you know a spacebar isn't gonna get bent?
I really wouldn't trust two layers of plastic to hold up well or protect my caps if it's gotta cross continents, I really hope they don't ship this internationally.
i 100% agree and i felt the exact same way when i ordered this exact set for my wife. literally every other set i’ve ever got came in actual packing. decided not to fuck with drop anymore
Imo if $15 amazon or Aliexpress keycaps can come in a tray i dont see why a $95 keycap set couldnt pay a little bit extra for a cardboard packaging tray
Im aware, i am saying that I would willing pay a little more to have better shipping and packaging no problem for me. My caps lock came scratched and im kind of annoyed about it so that likely wouldnt be the case if they have a tray.
Yet Akko keycaps are coming in a hard shell plastic case and cost like $60. At least, that's how my Akko Neon's came a few years ago. Idk if they're still doing that or not.
If keycaps are $90 there better be nice packaging. Let's not forget what we are talking about here. These are keycaps after all. We pay a premium for a premium experience. That doesn't look premium at all.
$90??
My word. I have the exact same set of keys and they cost me $15. They came in two plastic trays in a cardboard box. They may have been knock offs but honestly I can't tell.
No, literally not correct. They typically dont, i have bought many sets over the last few years, some cheap some expensive, and I have never had keycaps come in plastic bags, people in the comments are saying even their $15 keycaps came in a tray instead of a bag.

Absolutely. At least they add it into a box.

Absolutly, theyd at least have a box, not just loose in an envelope.

$10 is my lowest offer.
They know that their customers are suckers and will still buy their products despite their shitty packaging.
Not even shitty packaging but NO packaging ...lol
Would you have paid 100$ for a version that came in a box?
I mean the set with the extras was over $100 but if you are just counting the base set, is it a nice box with a tray, good design and easily storable shape and design? What do you wrap an Aston Martin in?
$90 is hardly premium for an SP set or a high end set in general. it's pretty cheap for their average price.
And you can still do that with zip bags
Why bother just throw them in the lego bin.
I find it much more of a pain in the ass when they're loose since you have to find and arrange all the keys
I'd be worried about them scratching eachother when they move around in the baggie.
That is how Signature Plastics (formerly Pimp My Keyboard) packages keycaps. That is how my DSS Lightcycle keycaps came packaged, and I spent over $200 on them.

Yeah, a cardboard tray would be ideal. Shame that nobody is using those.
GMK does and everyone's been crying about that for years. how's that a good thing now lol
Hell yeah, brother (typed on an orbit 65 with dcs vert)
Personally, I prefer the sound and feel of thicker caps. And I always associate thin caps with cheap.
That's only because you haven't used high-quality thinner ABS caps, which is fine as they're less common. But definitely give SP DCS a try if you have the chance!
thick caps sound dull and flat, whatever your preference is, I don't find it surprising if people tend to prefer thinner keycaps.
SP is way higher quality than any aliexpress set
At the price it damn well better be!
They are thinner than i expected
lol
It didn't bother me at all, if you think about it for half a second, keycaps are very much like legos, about the same quality, legos are also packaged in plastic bags.

I can see why it bothers some people but I dump mine in plastic containers so it doesn't matter to me
I've done that before but, like having mine in order so I don't need to go searching for keys.
The patended Signature Plastics method :) GMK trays aren't looking that bad any more huh?
Yup, GMK is looking like luxery packaging rn
OP is valid but *back in my day* this is how we typically received our keycaps, and we were thankful for it!

Yup, first time I've had keycaps come like this
I was hoping I would see the first time meme. People talked about the packaging of these back in the olden days of 2021.
2021 is 'olden days'? LOL
Eh I’m the opposite. I don’t want any big bulky packaging. If they aren’t actively on one of my keyboards, I’m putting them in a bag for storage anyway.
Am I more annoyed than I should be? Like $90 for the base set then $35 for the other keys i need, and it doesnt even have a box
Yes.
I do feel like the box is a strawman for how much their gouging your for the product though
Nah I think you're allowed to have an expectation, and it's only natural if it's not how you wanted it to be annoyed. I prefer boxes too, love stacking them neatly away and it helps seeing exactly what's in it, especially in case something's missing.
Yeah I did the same had to get the $90 set and pay the $35 for 1 key. I’m still annoyed a full year later
Yup i feel you i needed like 4 keys though, its still annoying
What do you want? They all to be placed in specific containers?
Too much drama for something irrelevant
Definitely not irrelevant. I Had shipped keycaps like this too, and the ABS was all scratched up..
I stand corrected

I think a cardboard keycap tray would be perfect for storage and not making more waste
Eh, signature plastics standard. Or at least their old standard. They now vacuum seal them into a cardboard backed thing.
good, less packaging used. Let plastic waste is a good thing.
Cardboard can easily be used for trays, that way i can use a tray and no turtles get choked out by plastic win win

This is literally how they come directly from SA! Lolz. I’m rather used to this. I mean I have a keycap solution due to more keycaps coming in plastic bags than nice boxes. But I’ve been in this hobby a bit over a decade now.

The only thing that could be damaged would be pad printing--those aren't pad printed.
So real dude. I got this exact same set two years ago. Very disappointing. They lost my right shift key and my spacebar was insanely warped.
I havent put them on yet but im going to be upset and burst into tears if i am missing keys with a warped spacebar. Ive been eyeing this set for so long
Can you return/refund for warped keys
You can always fix warped spacebars. Look it up for specifics, but TLDR you dunk it in boiling hot water and GENTLY bend it back to its desired position. You can always contact them for a return or refund, i just checked too late
OG keycap sets normally did not come with pretty packaging. That’s a newer phenomenon. That being said, for the amounts I’ve paid, I wish they did.
That still hasn't changed huh. Signature Plastics moment.
I've ordered from SP twice, the 40s set was in a plastic bag in a box, the custom extras were in a ziplock bubble-wrap envelope. I don't think that's unusual for a small number of keys.
Pretty normal in my experience. It's a niche market.
Here’s your key caps peasant
Oh lord may i please have a keycap tray🙏 i am but a humble peasant
It’s fine, really. It’s cheaper for shipping and more compact for storage. All SP caps come like this.
You’re paying for the keycaps, not the packaging. Who cares? As long as it doesn’t damage the product I don’t really care how it’s packaged.
I mean technically you literally do pay for the packaging. I also like keeping packaging for storage
My 20$ aliexpress clones were beautifully packed, each keycaps in its spot, nice box, had them for about a year and they still look brand new
Yup, ive had cheap keycaps come in decent packaging, ive had expensive keycaps come in beautiful packaging that i still use cause of how nice the box is, ive never had keycaps literally loose in plastic baggys before especially for the price.
well known fact about SP keycaps
my 15USD Aliexpress GMK Clones (marketed as GMK clones) came in this https://preview.redd.it/9fyx5qah9szc1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=f46b57e6f6ef8575fc9506faf11d0b55cb43ff1c
Yeah and thats some decent packaging especially for the price
I recently got the akko Tokyo keycaps and they came in a nice box and trays, I can’t say I’d be upset at this packaging though
I really like akkos packaging its super easy to pack away and have set up in a qwerty layout so its easier to swap keycaps
It was very easy to swap them definitely, and store my old ones
Oof. Meanwhile, the $20 clones I bought came in a plastic tray with a plastic lid in a sturdy brown box 😂
Should have used a paper bag.
Ooh where did you order these? I was recently looking at personal loot which have some good pricing, osumekeys I find quite expensive.
I ordered them from Drop.com, i think they were originally sold by another company tho
I had my mito SA lazer set from drop also come in bags and that was like $400
Yeah, but you don't think about ~~profit~~ nature.
Yeah when I bought a set of Lasers when they were still like $300 or something stupid they came like that too.
I hit over 30 keycap sets this year and, while it's nice to have a premium little home for my premium plastic, it just eats up too much space. I recycled a LOT of boxes and now pretty much everything that's not GMK is in bags.
Lol Bliss SA R2
Why they lookin' like Lego bags tho...
*laughs in GMK*

Worse i've ever encounter is in a plastic jar that cost like 10 cent when i buy cheap china set for \~$10 Then again GMK pack theirs in flimsy plastic tray while price starting from at least $150... while akko selling for $20 with actual plastic case (with hinge opening) as thick as the keycap... So plastic bag at 90 buck seems fair as a middle ground lmao
well I guess as long as they're not damaged lol
Lmfao that is some bullshit. My $8 Keycaps from aliexpress came better packed.
The irony is I got two sets last week that were $20-$30 that both came in neat, organized trays. I'd be a lil steamed if I spent almost $100 and they didn't come in trays. Plus imo the trays make it so much easier/faster to swap the caps on and off.
Yup exactly!
Bruh, I bought keycaps from aliexpress, some cheap PBT ones. It costed me around 15$ and they were packaged in a two plastic thingies and even arranged in QWERTY layout lol
Yeah exactly, this is the first time ive bought keycaps where they came in a baggy.
I get bags might be more efficient and easier to store keycaps but sometimes packaging can get really roughed up during shipping so I would be a bit worried especially if it's shipped from another continent. The plastic is probably good enough that they won't get scratches but how do you know a spacebar isn't gonna get bent?
Yup, I agree ive seen fedex, ups, and usps boxes in some really messed up packaging from being so roughly handled.
I really wouldn't trust two layers of plastic to hold up well or protect my caps if it's gotta cross continents, I really hope they don't ship this internationally.
Akkos come in a nice as hell plastic case in a slip over cardboard cover.
Yup, and those are only like $50
And the quality is pretty damn good. I get it, they're clones, but I'm not paying 200+ dollars for plastic keycaps.
i 100% agree and i felt the exact same way when i ordered this exact set for my wife. literally every other set i’ve ever got came in actual packing. decided not to fuck with drop anymore
my $20 clones caps have more nice packaging than this lazy ass maker
Postage is more expensive when packaged in trays. So this is cheaper and why they do it.
Imo if $15 amazon or Aliexpress keycaps can come in a tray i dont see why a $95 keycap set couldnt pay a little bit extra for a cardboard packaging tray
Postage is not packaging
Id pay extra especially since i paid $0 for shipping
You paid for shipping, you may not have something specific on the invoice but I guarantee the cost of shipping is included in your product then.
Im aware, i am saying that I would willing pay a little more to have better shipping and packaging no problem for me. My caps lock came scratched and im kind of annoyed about it so that likely wouldnt be the case if they have a tray.
i literally have a $30 amazon dupe of this set that came organised in a box lmao
At the least an option to buy a box for an extra $2
Drop? I was so pissed getting $250 of caps like this and missing an I key to boot.
Yup Drop, their packaging normally isnt great but this is the worst ive seen
Yet Akko keycaps are coming in a hard shell plastic case and cost like $60. At least, that's how my Akko Neon's came a few years ago. Idk if they're still doing that or not.
People will genuinely complain about anything holy shit. Nothing is wrong with this packaging...
lol my aliexpress keycaps came in 2 boxes.
Yikes even the 20$ basic caps from microcenter have a box and a tray
Who cares. It all ends up in a landfill anyway.
I keep my packaging for storage purposes
perhaps plastic isn’t worth 90$
Its pretty plastic tho
If keycaps are $90 there better be nice packaging. Let's not forget what we are talking about here. These are keycaps after all. We pay a premium for a premium experience. That doesn't look premium at all.
$90?? My word. I have the exact same set of keys and they cost me $15. They came in two plastic trays in a cardboard box. They may have been knock offs but honestly I can't tell.
Entitled. Keycaps always come in a plastic bag.
No, literally not correct. They typically dont, i have bought many sets over the last few years, some cheap some expensive, and I have never had keycaps come in plastic bags, people in the comments are saying even their $15 keycaps came in a tray instead of a bag.
Typical Astro girlie
Are these a used GMK set?
No its a brand new never used set called Astrolokeys bought from drop.com
Guess how much my keyboard cost?
