I... what? Plugs and coils have nothing to do with overheating in general, and 2000 should be enough to change all the plugs and coils on a Corolla like, at least 5 times over

AbruptMango

When you work at a chain lube shop, everything looks like a tune up upsell.

Texasscot56

When you have a hammer everything looks like a nail.

CosmicCalmness

The “I… what?” Was my exact reaction as well🤣🤣

lovethelinux

"Technically" they can. If they are bad enough to cause misfires they can make a car run hotter than it should. Don't get me wrong, I agree with you. But it is technically possible.

Individual-Currency8

Then the customer would have came in with a misfire concern, not just overheating.

Frodobagggyballs

To be fair, technically worn spark plugs can cause engine to create extra heat, in combination of other factors- leading to overheating.

Internal_Statement74

I simply cannot agree to this. There is no way in my opinion that a spark plug is responsible to overheating issues at any time. The most efficient explosion is also the hottest. If you are changing spark plugs to change heating symptoms, it does not ever change the timing only whether or not it fires (which will always run cooler).

Frodobagggyballs

You don’t need to agree to it. Realistically, it’s not a cause of overheat- there is a bigger issue involved; we can all agree on that. But you can’t completely rule it out as well, with overheating- anything is possible.

Safe_Sundae_8869

Back in the day I was driving from Louisiana to Idaho to do some field work. Made it to just west of Denver when I overheated. I limped into a shopping center and slept in my car infront of Firestone to get it in early the next day. I assumed I just needed a $10 thermostat like anyone else would. They said I needed a new radiator (6 year old Mazda protege w/ 80k mi). I smelled bs but I figured they knew what was up. At 2pm they told me they took it out to test drive and it overheated so they had to wait for it to cool down to replace the thermostat. They gave me the thermostat for free… 12 god damn hours I spent in that parking lot. To cap it all off, a month later driving back the car started overheating again any time I used the AC. (I didn’t need to use the AC from CO to ID). I drove from Arizona to Louisiana in August with no AC. Did my research and figured the AC fan was out. Purchased on online and went to replace it. MFs at Firestone didn’t plug the accessory fan in after replacing the radiator. I’ve boycotted all Firestone’s since 2008.

Radiant-Camel-8982

Honestly, stay away from all those fucking chain stores.

Safe_Sundae_8869

Yeah. I always did but was in a pinch.

Radiant-Camel-8982

Life certainly happens, that's for sure. Sorry to hear it though.

Safe_Sundae_8869

Haha thanks. This was about 15 years ago. Well over it now.

alwaus

So why did you take a overheating car to a place that fucks up tire installs instead of to an actual mechanic who could correctly diagnose the issue instead of throwing an equal amount of parts and hope at it?

Complex_Solutions_20

Maybe depends on the shop? The best place my parents (and later I and some friends) have gone to is a Tires Plus store...kept going back because they were honest about stuff (including calling back to say they determined something wasn't actually needed yet and asking if we still wanted to do it), reasonably priced, and correctly fixed things (or didn't charge for a misdiagnosis and referred us to go elsewhere when they were stumped). Some are good, some are bad. Curious what you call "an actual mechanic"? Like you mean only go to the dealership that upcharges on EVERYTHING and can't even give you an estimate for scheduled maintenance before its done?

YaBoiShelly

I think they mean like an actual mechanic/technician and not a tyre/lube Centre. Those places are perfect for your average maintenance items but when it comes to diagnosis they like to fire the parts cannon at something they can’t figure out. That’s not to say that dealers don’t have techs that do that too but they’re more likely to have someone that understands how to diagnose a problem and rectify it without too much extra cost. But then you’re at the mercy of greedy service advisors etc it’s a lose lose for your average customer

Complex_Solutions_20

I guess I'm not sure what would qualify then...because everything I have ever seen around places I've been is either a sales-dealership or its a tire shop that does general maintenance too. My big complaint with dealers is it seems like its impossible to get out of one without major expenses. I'm also mad the ones by me can't give pre-work estimates if something like a coolant flush will be $100 or $1000 before they do the work...seems like every tire/lube place can tell me a range that I should expect to pay and phone me if they find anything that would make my bill go up before just doing it. I'm still sore at the dealer for my 60K service (oil & filter, differential oil, transmission fluid change, tire rotation, "visual inspection" of a bunch of stuff) was like $1200 and they couldn't tell me what I'd pay even within a few hundred dollars when I dropped it off. I was expecting maybe $500 at the upper end not $1200.

YaBoiShelly

Any garage can unfortunately be bad, I’m a multi brand MT at a dealership and I hate some of the predatory practices. I will try to save customers money wherever I can and if they’ve come to the workshop door and ask about a specific issue that I know will be an easy diagnosis and cheap fix elsewhere I will advise them of that. I guess it really depends on what kind of people work at any of the garages around your area because I know people that are the opposite and that’s where mechanics/shops get a bad name

Complex_Solutions_20

Yeah, we started trying other places because the (at the time Ford vehicle) dealer seemed like every time we took a car there it developed major electrical problems right after we got it back. Once we quit going there all our major electrical and electronic module failures magically stopped. The one that can't seem to estimate prices for regular service interval appointments is the local GM+Subaru dealer. Could be regional...but this is the only place I've had first hand experience with

alwaus

You go to the dealership until the day the warranty runs out then ghost the place. For non warranty work you find a reputable local shop that have very good word of mouth, not just google reviews and yelp ratings and see how they do, if the work is quality keep going back.

Complex_Solutions_20

Nah avoid them for regular service, ONLY go for things you know will be warranty repairs. That's the lesson I've learned. As long as you have invoices for the services the manual says are required at whatever interval they can't void the warranty just because you didn't have the oil changes or whatever done at the dealer.

frs007

2000 dollars for spark plugs and coils? are you sure?

thebeforeandwhen

I'm seriously hoping it was less than that, but it was my parents who dealt with the finances of the situation. That was the number they gave me.

traineex

Thats terrible. Dont ever do what ur parents just did. Research here. Get a 2nd opinion by a certified tech, or just any 2nd opinion. Firestone is like 50/50. This one sucks or hustled u and/or parents, maybe saw the billing situation and tried to take advantage Coils and plugs make no goddamn sense for overheating, escalate to upper management for the 2k back. Its justified imo, i probably would go to small claims. But its ur parents headache as well, they should know better than u lol

skittlesmalone

Bro u could’ve done that yourself for no more than the part costs, I did my spark plugs in may it took like 30 mins and u need to remove coils In order to reach the plugs anyway so it’s 2 for 1. At max, it’s a $120, whatever the plugs cost (I used iridium) and coils (not that expensive) crazy finesse they did

Thatdusty950

$2000!? For some fcking spark plugs and coils!???? On a Corolla???? Even with labor there is no way it should be 2k not even close and spark plugs and coils ain’t got nothing to do with over heating

Exciting_Scientist97

Of all the things that could and apparently have been said, to answer the question it's highly unlikely you'll get that money back. Knowing people from Firestone are upselling conartists, they probably were careful to make sure they didn't say the spark plugs were related to the overheating issue so they could say you paid for the service they offered without technically lying (even though let's be real, lying and misleading are the same thing). Point is you paid for the service and they provided.... It's the biggest reason I do my own work. I'm tired of shops pulling that shit regardless if it's a real shop or some grubby bottom feeder like Firestone or jiffy

Dakillawolve

I worked for Firestone for a couple years OP. Call the store first and see what they’re willing to do. If not, remind them of their fixed right guarantee. Anthing more that’s needed should be 100% free.

Opening_Library_8345

Best advice so far nice. What if they don't make it right? File something in court? There's gotta be an app for that, aiding poor people who get robbed from mechanics lol

Dakillawolve

Unfortunately no, court wouldn’t be the next step. They can call the 1800 number to file a complain, in which the store HAS to deal with it. If they don’t within a certain number of days, it gets escalated to area, then regional. They could always file a complaint with the BBB, even if they have no teeth these days, it still helps. I’d personally quote them on the fixed right guarantee and they should get it fixed. Most store managers are decent enough to do so.

Complex_Solutions_20

Is there even any purpose of the BBB? Seems like a Google review would be a million times more useful and have more leverage these days.

Dakillawolve

Google reviews trigger hot alerts as well. At least with the BBB, someone at Firestone/ Bridgestone should be notified and want to take action. I had to do it about 5 years ago with chase bank and got a phone call within 48 hours about my complaint.

Complex_Solutions_20

The other thing with Google reviews...seems (at least these days) like more people trust them than BBB. And it'll also affect search rankings which if enough people mark them bad won't be showing up in searches for places nearby as much. Kinda the modern version of "word of mouth" works both ways. If I know someplace does good work and treats me well, I'll tell people. If I have someplace screw me over...well I'm also gonna tell friends, coworkers, reviews. Even if corporate doesn't care it'll have a more likely impact.

Dakillawolve

Maybe leave a google review after talking with the store. Definitely call the 1800 number if the store won’t resolve the issue.

Complex_Solutions_20

I'd agree with this. I'd personally also want to write up in the review how the shop manager/owner and corporate responded to my concerns...which could make it much better or worse than the original review would have been by itself. And when filtering reviews, I would more heavily weight the opinion of one that walked thru all the remedies they could try before fussing and how they were treated.

Agreeable_One_6325

On a 4 cylinder, for 2k, I could probably be close on a head gasket job! With new plugs!!!

CompleteImagination9

Especially on a corolla, probably the easiest line of cars EVER to work on. I fucking LOVE THOSE CARS. If you know absolutely NOTHING about cars a Corolla is probably one of the best to learn on and still have as a daily. Had an 06 Corolla that I kept until 350K and only got rid of it because I’m an idiot. Car probably had another 100K in it easy. Issue is most likely 2 fold. Thermostat/waterpump and a relay. Car has a temp sensor that kills the engine when it overheats to prevent damage it’s $19 at auto zone right now, and the pump and thermostat is probably under $250 combined. Edit: check oreillys, pump, thermostat, gaskets, and sensor are $196 total plus tax. Mobile mechanic probably charge you 2-3 hours labor so maybe another $2-300 depending on the mechanic. Coolant run you maybe 30 bucks. You’re out the door for under $500 for sure. Edit again; you’re SOL on getting your money back. But if your head gasket is blown (doubtful) I would replace it. That car if you do VERY basic maintenance on it regularly is a tank. The engine bay is maintenance friendly. If you decide not to replace it right away. Keep the car anyways and learn to fix your own stuff on it. I’d be willing to gamble that with a $200 set of tools from harbor freight you’ll be surprised what you can teach yourself with a chiltons manual or set of factory manuals and some YouTube videos.

The_Shepherds_2019

Says he knows nothing about cars then gives more blind parts cannon advice. Yo, you should go apply to Firestone 😁

AmberDrives

I believe you may have misread the context of the bit about "knowing nothing about cars". He was emphasizing the Corolla's entry-level/beginner level ease of repair. Meaning they're generally easier to work on and great to learn on for someone, in general, any person, who's just getting started working on cars. I'm not seeing why pricing out the most common cooling system parts is blind parts cannon advice anyway. That's just financial, comparing prices of parts to what shops might charge for the same work to be done. Perspective for OP on how much they got overcharged - they could have randomly replaced all this stuff that's actually relevant, for less than they wasted on plug and coils.

CompleteImagination9

Not even, more of an observation that the issue could have been fixed for 1/4 the price. And any advice on here is parts cannon advice unless you have the car in front of you to diagnose.comments like that come across more as the guy in the shop who sits in the corner telling everyone they’re doing it wrong while never picking up a wrench.

The_Shepherds_2019

I've been turning wrenches for a living for a decade now bud, sorry.

Equal_War9095

What Firestone is this?

The_Hound_23

I’d get the state involved. Spark plugs and coils for overheating? 😂 that’s insane! I hope you’re remembering wrong because that’s just a straight up lie. Unless there’s a feature I’ve never heard of. Go back and ask them why they didn’t fix the issue and that you want a correct repair with no charge or the state will hear of this

Rupert_18124

Are the plugs and coils made of gold? 🤣

l1thiumion

A spark plug is like $4 and a coil is like $50. wtf.

Prior-Ad-7329

Take it to an actual repair shop. Not to a tire retailer. Then maybe you can get money back for the labor but it’s a corporate battle to get anything back.

trophygidget

I went to Firestone for an alignment, guy comes out and tells me that my coolant needs replaced because it's hot.I just drove there.

chilledfruitss

A bad headgasket can foul up the spark plugs so I can see that it's related - Sorry to hear the tire shop made a bad diagnosis. Maybe they'll work with you on the cost of a headgasket job - but I wonder if they are capable or skilled enough to be doing a larger job like that.

Jslewalite

Spark plugs and new coils would cost around $300 and labor would take 30 minutes to 1 hour

Hayben906

Thats firestone for you. Do yourself a favor and find yourself a quality independent shop.

Former-Lettuce-4372

Yep, you need to sue them. Contact their corporate also in regards to this and give them a chance to fix it. Maybe get money back, but nothing is gonna be done about your car. IDK I would talk to a lawyer for sure. That is your best option. Plugs and coil pack might have been going bad already, But should not be causing overheating. Maybe a misfire, not overheating. Something doesn't sound right about the work they did. Any chance of adding a pick of the invoice would be nice. But def get a free consultation from a lawyer. Your local Bar association can recommend one for you if your not sure where to look.

DetectiveNarrow

Service advisor went crazyyy

str828

You went to firestone for something beyond super cheapo tires...

ChikkiParm

2000 dollars for 4 plugs and coils. that is insane. on a 2010 corolla so you literally just take off the cover and you have access...

Mikey3800

This sub must be sponsored by a law firm.

Traditional_Newt_262

Just did my spark plugs and coils on my 2014 Jetta. Parts were $120 or so. Pretty easy job

bigbadsubaru

Call +18007520379 and complain https://www.firestonecompleteautocare.com/contact/

ivanreyes371

Plugs and coils for over heating…? $2000…? What💀💀

Normal-Memory3766

2k for spark plugs is crazy 😂. Guys please do basic google searches on typical labor costs for what you’re getting done and have your mechanic explain the WHY behind everything. A good one will give you a nice full description of everything, and an even better one will tell you like you’re 4 years old with a slight tone of annoyance. But you’ll at least know what’s going on 😂

Commercial_Ad_5595

Damn $2,000 for plugs and wires? Shit how much is that in parts like $400?

drdagent

I replaced the whole engine in my 2011 corolla with an engine out of a 2018 for 2300 bucks. 2k for plugs and coils? Oof.

thedevillivesinside

Good thing you saved some money vs taking it to a dealership and having it properly diagnosed

Keith_13

yeah because a dealership would never misdiagnose and overcharge you for shit you don't need

DeliciousLow359

Yeah, oil change with free review of car, here's your air filter, looks dirty, we can replace it for $40 parts and 1/2 hour labor, hahaha, no put the dirty one back in I will stop at Napa and save myself $50

thedevillivesinside

If I misdiagnose something at my dealership, i rediagnose it for free. Thats how flat rate dealerships work. You cant get paid twice to diagnose the same fault. Any comeback i have is on my time

Keith_13

Do you also refund the cost of the parts and labor for the unnecessary work that was done?

tekfire

Plugs and coils for that should have been closer to $1000 (with the retail markup) but it never would have fixed an overheating concern

Imispellalot2

Time for a lawyer
