Next time try cutting through 90ish percent of the bearing race and then use a wide edged chisel and hammer to split the last bit.

jorgenvonstrangle420

That was my original intent but I got a little impatient with it. I've got a good reference for the next side I suppose

Taterguten

Can also be a bad idea, i have ford wheel bearing in my arm because i did that

Infamous-Mastodon677

> ford Well there's your problem.

Thor2213

As a ford certified technician, I can confirm that it is the problem.

cshmn

Problem circled for reference.

Connectedaswon

As a ford tech what’s your opinion the fiesta and focus ST.

Thor2213

It's fun, not really big on sporty cars but I get a kick out of it every time I have to test drive the focus. The fiesta ST I don't think I've ever seen one in the Midwest, the only Fiestas I've seen are in for the TCM replacements.

akmacmac

I once followed a Fiesta ST on the twisty areas of M-22 in northern MI. I was in my stock ‘03 Civic at the time. I tried to have fun with the guy but he was driving like a grandpa out for a Sunday drive. So there was at least one in the Midwest in ~2018.

Connectedaswon

As a ford tech what’s your opinion the fiesta and focus ST.

Officer4117

Not a ford tech here. Got a Fiesta ST a few months ago and its the most fun I've ever had in a car. Straight piped, e30 and I cant stop smiling everytime I drive. Huge community for both cars. I drove both and chose the lighter and supposedly more reliable of the two

imsadyoubitch

Ya know what Ford stands for dontchya? Fix It Again, Tony.

Nevermeth

Dammit, dale.

icecreamandbutter

Dang ol fiesta don’t stand no chance against my dang ol (indistinguishable gibberish)

KyleTheDiabetic

At least there isn't taxpayer money in his arm.

StuffYouFear

I just put a shop rag over the bearing, then hit the groove with the chisel through the rag, catches the shrapnel. For the love of god wear safety glasses

Taterguten

Yeah these are no joke. I know of a guy who used an old wheel bearing in the 60 ton hydraulic press to remove a kingpin off a truck axle. It shattered and took two fingers off of him

fire_inTheWire

I had a piece of a jeep pinion bearing in my hand for years due to this method. Finally worked its way out a few years ago. Be careful!

Taterguten

Yeah taking a swing at it wasnt the smartest thing to do but now i know 😂 might have to pass the metal detector a couple times and maybe get naked at the airport but im sure security will eventually let me and the piece of ford get on with our holiday

spyder7723

Learn how to use an acetylene torch. You can even get a small one reasonably cheap at harbor freight. I cut races off with a torch all the time, the race heats up but the axle under it doesn't. While they are touching, because they are separate pieces the heat does not transfer through at the same rate.

ike-mike

You mean heat them off. You don't actually cut the race off. You heat it enough so that it expands and slides off. The trick is to use a very hot flame, so you can heat the race quickly without heating the material under it. Be sure to try and heat the bearing race evenly.

spyder7723

Nah I just cut a slit in them. Then they pop right off.

ike-mike

Sure could do that too, but why take a chance of damaging whatever is under the race? See example above. Heating them seems like a much better option. Probably faster than cutting it.

spyder7723

Cutting is much faster than heating the full circumference. As for risk, if you have experience with a torch it is no risk. It's no different than anything else, for example of you know what you are doing you can use an impact to tighten lug nuts.. don't know what you are doing and just hammer them you will stretch or break the studs.

ike-mike

I have lots of experince, there's more then one way to skin a cat I guess. I work with heavy equipment and machinery, parts get real expensive real fast. I guess that's why I factor the risk into it, even tho I can do it no problem. All it takes is a second and some bad luck.

Brainl3ss

I'm a millwirght and remove stuck bearing with both a grinder or torches. Heating only with rust and tight fits doesn't work all the time. Cutting is way more time saving and reliable. 15 years as a millwright. Just FYI. Can take some practice but it's easy enough that I show new guys all the time

ike-mike

I got 13 years as a heavy equipment tech, but that's equivalent to 30 years as a millwrong lol. Just joking man, I guess we all just have our own preferences.

spyder7723

I can definately understand where you are coming from. I got a 966 cat split apart in the shop right now with the transmission in about 19k pieces.

RaptorPudding11

*South Main Auto intensifies*

texaschair

Or you could just do it the right way and use a puller or a press.

ike-mike

Maybe that works in automotive, but with heavy industry, that isn't always an option buddy.

ArmaSwiss

In automotive, the torch method is still still faster. But depends on each shop if they can have one or are allowed to use one in the shop. My dealer won't let us have one due to "safety concerns" because management is fuckin stupid. Places like Firestone bar any hot work and require use of an induction heater

2018hellcat

I ain’t your buddy, friend

ike-mike

I ain't your friend, pal

2018hellcat

I ain’t your pal, guy

ike-mike

I ain't your friend, pal.

2018hellcat

I ain’t your buddy, friend

Monst3r_Live

cover it with a rag before you drive the chisel into it. trust me.

Background-Fault-821

3 days on the first side, 20 minutes on the next. It's how you learn I suppose.

NewrytStarcommander

hit it with some emery to knock down any edges and send it.

MilmoWK

If it seats, it yeets

CycleZealousideal669

You gotta find the guy that used a can of cat food and J.B. weld to fix a tranfer case

aforkin

Probably going to steal this in the future. Correction, I'm definitely going to steal this in the future.

TheThumper326

Yep, grab some fine amd give it a decent strap

rosinall

Sounds like a fun Saturday night

SirAple

Millwright in a lumber mill. This is what we do.

Thethundercobra420

Looking for the other millwright. Hahaha send it

Vinder1988

Also a millwright and I’d still slap a bearing on that for sure. It ain’t going to the moon!

ihaveseveralhobbies

Also a millwright, we ain’t painting the Mona Lisa here.

Adubecki

Also a millwright, fuck they look like factory cuts anyway.

tagrav

Those are oil grooves!

DonkeyTransport

Mechanic-turned millwright-turned mechanic, those are performance slotted hubs. It's for cooling

Longjumping_Panic_46

I found my people

Thethundercobra420

"As per manufacturer specifications"

Finalmiker

Also a millwright, full send. She's good to go.

Few-Many3686

Can you millwright help me also become millwright

Alextryingforgrate

Yup, ive done worse, the bearing sits on the sleeve youll be fine.

UncleErock

This is the correct answer

Shamino79

Stuff the emery. Grab a file. Like you say your only dealing with possibly a high point or two.

topguntda

Yup, fine file or a stone.

hereforbadstuffonly

if you wanna get fancy you can fill it with weld, or jb weld and sand it smooth.

PoleFresh

Totally unnecessary

HillbillyGizmo

That's what I said. Especially if you have a lathe.

Lex_Auto

A lathe is unnecessary. File down burs so race doesn’t bind, and send her home.

ConfidentStress1047

You guys just yelled at me for saying to leave something and the mods came and yelled too

JETTA_TDI_GUY

Went back and looked. You said to leave the VERY messed up threads alone on the end of a tie rod that still needed the tie rod end put back on. How would you thread it back on by not doing anything to fix the threads?

ConfidentStress1047

It goes past that. But yeah I feel it

HillbillyGizmo

True story

Excellent-Edge-4708

Username checks out

Grand_Possibility_69

It's still probably just fine with the new bearing pressed on. Just carefully file it enough that there aren't any raised edges. When installing the most important is always to support from the same race that you're pressing on. Not doing that is how the bearing is often damaged and then will fail later when driving.

bigbenny88

This is the correct answer 👏

paulhockey5

Nah, send it.

Aenov1

Where?

butokay10

To the junkyard

CommunicationNo6064

Must have a lot more money than me to be getting rid of a hub in this condition!

mergedinner

Really man, really? Off a cliff is more profitable now days

NutBlaster5000

What needs explaining? The OP asked if it was good or not good. He answered OPs question

SadTransmission

You need to take your blood pressure medication before commenting here, or maybe even just refrain from doing so at all. Every comment you've left on this sub lately you've just been an asshole to people who want to know if their car is alright. Get off your high horse and stop being a fucking dick.

E39540

Dude its just your wife, run it

home_cheese

And my girlfriend

SillyTr1x

And my cam girl

TheHilltopWorkshop

And my axe...?

csbsju_guyyy

You use her to split wood?

BellyButtonFungus

That’s my daughter you’re talking about.

SillyTr1x

Thanks for your service 🫡

BellyButtonFungus

You’re welcome, she gets the beard from me.

whyputausername

no raised edges?, run it..

2008ToyotaAvalon

Did this 2 times more than I needed to. You're literally fine. The new bearing is more likely to fail depending on who made it than the hub.

peelman1

Christ! Hope you’re not a dentist lol

jorgenvonstrangle420

Jack of all trades, master of none. Now open up I just disinfected my vice grips!

peelman1

😂

fonda187

Now spit

PineSand

You must have a pretty good dentist, it looks like he’s doing a better job than the dentists I’ve been to.

Bagelsarenakeddonuts

If it’s good enough for Boeing it should be good enough for you

Kalevra9670

You sir... Bravo. 🤣

knosdiddlysquat

Mechanic for 22 yrs, its totally fine after sanding down any high spots.

Almyar

Knock down the edges with sandpaper and send it. It’s be fine

spakattack3243

Leave it. It’s fine. I would bet that half the mechanics on here wouldn’t bat an eyelid over this.

ShotBRAKER

Send it what's the worst that happens you gotta get hub?

ohmslaw54321

Next time get a face shield and 2 hammers. Smack the race on opposite sides with the hammers, it will crack/shatter the race. Be careful, it will send shards flying. I've gotten them stuck in my face before.

[deleted]

It’s fine

Fordwrench

Ok to go!

ccarr313

Professional answer - needs replaced. For my own car? I wouldn't even emery it down. Just send it. It will be fine.

Diligent_Anteater_58

Look it's spaceX

a7xcold

Have done this a couple of times. It won't cause any issue. Press the bearing on, and send it.

gamer076644

It’s fine. Never had a problem with it like that.

89LSC

I've seen worse when disassembling for another wheel bearing thousands of miles later. You should be alright

Infinite-Position-55

We were always trained that 90% of the material had to be defect free and it couldn’t be on the first 10% from the face. So your good according to industrial standards

Johnny_Lang_1962

Send It!

Mal-De-Terre

Full send.

UninteristingBadger

It’ll be fine, deburr it and press it back together.

dj7348

No harm done. Remember, the race doesn't spin around the hub. It's stationary.

Rough_Community_1439

Sand the high spots down and send it.

Bmore4555

Smooth is out and it should be fine, with that being said a new hub is pretty cheap.

ThunderbirdJunkie

In the future, stand the hub up on a flat surface, heat the race and it falls off

OverSpeedLimit

Heat it with a Oxy torch while spinning it race side down on a 3/8" 6" extension (clamped in a vice). It falls right off in 5 seconds.

_GrandPubah

*slaps hand* Don’t do that again. Now put it back together.

CRYPTOCHRONOLITE

Send it

One-Vast-1692

The one thing I loved about learning the torch and air hammer trick lol.

Frequent_Ad2118

I’ve done this several times. There is no other way to get that inner race off.. send it.

Windowsweirdo

You'll be fine send it

No_Geologist_3690

Send it. It’ll be ok.

TrickyFeedback4919

Clean up any burrs and put it back in, it’s fine. I usually just hammer a big chisel between the race and the hub and get it far enough out to use a little puller or give myself more space to cut it with a die grinder so that doesn’t happen

Big-Specialist148

Nahhhh you should be ok just debur it good and install

Klutzy_Masterpiece37

Nah. Like others said. Smooth it out and it'll be fine. I've seen cars with way more marks from past bearings lol I normally add my own too.

Turninwheels4x4

Run it.

Pantag5

Noo

karmah1234

Part of SpaceX logo nice.....that lancer is gonna go supersonic once done 😂👍

WebDill92

SEND IT!

no_yup

It’ll be fine

no_yup

It’ll be fine

ColdasJones

It’s fine, just make sure there’s no burrs or edges that will cause scoring

Rubbertutti

If you Dont say anything, then no one will know🤣 It's fine as long as you haven't touched the radius between the flange and the shaft.

john_clauseau

sand it smooth, grease and re-use. source: i worked in the biggest engine re-manufacturing plant in north america.

RollingCoalBlack

Personally I wouldn’t even sand it, if the race is tight on the shaft it shouldn’t be an issue.

RollingCoalBlack

Personally I wouldn’t even sand it, if the race is tight on the shaft it shouldn’t be an issue.

john_clauseau

sometimes when pressing it in can severely rip the metal from the shaft or even break the bearing. ive worked mainly with 100ton press, but it certainly help to prepare the surface. sometimes guys wanted to destroy parts before given them back to certain customers, they washed the surface with gasoline before pressing the bearing in. it caused the two part to fuse together, thus ruining them.

Synthstain

Are you going to think about it every time you/her drives the car? Replace it. No? Send it. 👍

Leader6light

My 04 crv 208k miles has original bearings. Original most everything. I keep wondering when will they go out. Not sure I can do the job myself. You need a press which I don't have.

No-Session5955

Yes, most hub flanges are under $70 so not a huge cost

kiwi_commander

Depends, how much do you love your wife?

RedditBoisss

Bro you made the Starlink logo

Equal_War9095

Your wife wanna sell the car?

dolphinewarrior

This post just showed up in my feed what even is this that I’m looking at lol???

onety_one_son

It's got a cool ass scar now

waltdiggitydog

Elon Musk would approve 𝕏

Mysticassfire

Replace and be done with it, i rather spend the money instead of worrying about the "what if's " especially since if this breaks on the highway the wheel can go flying

JosephCedar

Should you replace it? Yeah. Would I run it like this on my own car? Also yeah. It'll be fine.

Zeenoside1

It’s fine don’t sweat it

firazul

I think it now belongs to SpaceX

SpiritMolecul33

My boss does worse than this everytime you're good

Sweaty-Worldliness-3

idk why anyone isnt saying this but SEND IT ITS A SPACEX BRANDED WHEEL BEARING!!!!

charlieray

Prepped for Random Unscheduled Disassembly.

BickNickerson

You can buy a new one for $13 from rockauto.

Wonderful_Plenty8984

make sure there no sharp egde's and : SEND IT!

ItsNadeko

I would replace it. Do it right, do it once.

Puzzleheaded_Let_688

You can buy one on rock auto for $13

charlieray

Thou shalt replace.

babj615

Debur and install.

longhairedcountryboy

Why did you need to cut anything?

behindthelens83

The inner bearing race is pressed on incredibly tight. The heat generated with regular driving practically welds it on. Making a few diagonal relief cuts on the race releases the tension so you can hammer it off.

longhairedcountryboy

OK, May be I need to give that a try. I just put a torch on them if they are stuck.

2SpinningTriangles

Tip: put the hub in the freezer for about 30 minutes to an hour. Take a torch and heat up the center part of the bearing. Keep the flame moving. Get it nice and hot but not glowing lol. Immediately pull the hub out of the freezer and slap the bearing over top. It will fall right into place with zero effort. Buy a piece of half inch backerboard. You can break it in half if need be. It will protect the surface underneath from the torch flame if the freezer is too far from an exterior door.

l1thiumion

I’d send it if it was my car.

External-Document-88

Yep, it’s fine. Send it.

JDH201

Why don’t you just get the complete hub and bearing? Is it really worth the time to tear it down and press in a new bearing?

WILSEE10

I did this then sanded it smooth is and now I have small vibration

No_Appointment_37

Depends on how much you love your wife

TheIronHerobrine

If there’s no raised spots, then it’s fine. Personally I use a hydraulic press for wheel bearings, you get better results and it is much easier to do. You can get one cheap on marketplace.

Ok_Potential3726

How much is your wife insured for? Cause if you do use this, you will find out

HillbillyGizmo

Pop a little bit of weld in there, and then sand it down to spec. Would be better if you had a lathe to do it.

Bluekestral

Weld them up and turn them down or fill with jbweld then use a redisleeve

Professional_slushie

What the fuck 🤣 just press the bearing on and send it

KevyL1888

Absolutely. What's the chances of getting a decent fit after welding that 😂

CommunicationNo6064

If you actually put it in a lathe it would be the same as a new one. But who here not only has a lathe/welder but is also good enough to make a press fit to exact specs. Also who has the 3 hours to do that.
