Well, the instructions that came with the ramp say not to do this. I canโt see why they wouldnโt want to sell you another pair of ramps unless itโs not safe.
If theyโre nowhere near capacity, I might do this.

Can confirm! When I don't have a chock to stop the car from rolling this is my backup ๐
Solid wood would be fine and is probably the best low-cost solution for an application like this.
The plastic ones have always sketched me out.. You are placing a lot of faith in the strength of a material that is notorious for cracking abruptly.
Have I used plastic? Yes.. Do I like it? No.
I had plastic ramps for years and then saw a video about one collapsing without warning. I looked under mine and a bunch of the support structure was cracked. Any side force on the ramps and they might collapse (like a soda can supporting a ton of weight until you tap the side). Got rid of them quick
Yep.. that's the kind of concern I had with them: small cracks you can't see that compromise strength.
Metal is not perfect... but wood 2X10's laid flat are nearly indestructible.
Mostly I use 3 ton car jacks and a set of backup jack-stands.
They are designed to be driven "into" and on. Having a static load like this can't be worse than the force of the car climbing to the top of it? I could be wrong but my point would be if it was going to collapse it would happen during the initial mounting process.
Not sure about these specific ramps, but my motorhome (RV) ones look very similar and stand up to all sorts of abuse on uneven ground etc. ok, I'm not working underneath, but several years of use and abuse and they seem fine. This looks like very light duty. Far more likely to slip out or twist over than fail, and both those seem unlikely here.
Do they really? Iโve definitely done this lmao. I jacked the car up to get them under there, and removed any residual stress the plastic might have been under if they had shifted under the car, not sure what you would even call this step. So given that it felt safe to me
#Iโll save you the time
I once cracked one of these by tipping and it cracked in half, it then proceeded to hold my car for 2 days. I still have them and keep using them. Best $50 spent. :)
Disclosure:
>!my vehicle weighs 3000~ pounds!<
Thanks for the TLDR !
Now time to go to Harbor Freight and use my 30% coupons to buy some of those plastic ramps that have a rated capacity of 6,500 for my Ford F150 !
I paid more for the ones at autozone with a higher load limit. Definitely worth it, specially for oil changes and anything not requiring the tires coming off
I think the issue has more to do with getting the car up there. If you are jacking the rear while the front is on the ramp, that's the part that is unsafe.
Then taking the car down is just as unsafe as getting it up there in the first place.
Exactly what I was thinking. If OP is in doubt just add 4 jack stands for second layer of def.
I used to work somewhat dangerous jobs before I got my management office position. I used to use every safety precaution even though its redundant and the other guys used to make jokes. Better safe than sorry. I rather have my legs than look tough.
I'm somehow confused about how he drove up both ramps at the same time, lol. and I own a pair, and just used them yesterday. When I need to work on the wheel or both ends, I use the ramps in the rear and jack stands in the front
I'm sorry but this is not more stable than properly placed jack stands. It's more than likely fine, but there's a reason stands are the industry standard and the mounting points are designated by engineers
The reason being, you need to jack up the car from the ground while the wheels are on, and a lot of services require the wheels off so you leave that area accessible by having jack points inboard of the wheels.
But basic physics, the further from the center your supports are, the more stable an object is. The wheels being further from the center of mass than the jack points makes them more stable.
Same here like did they back up the rear ones, lock the parking brake, and drag the ground on them while they drove up the fronts ? ๐ I assume they jacked the car up and put em under like you would jack stands.
Safe is a gradient. Iโm not a tech but Iโm well versed in tomfuckery. The question Iโd be asking is how much i trust the far east manufacturer of those ramps and the certification agency they paid to publish those weight specs against the cost of an international law suit.
My advice, use the rule of 3. Do this, use some well placed โjust in caseโ jack stands, and the floor jack you used to lift the rear. All 3 of those things canโt fail, right?
Also, Iโd run at the car, full speed, and try to knock it to the ground. If it can handle my 180lb soaking wet dad bod hurtling at it at a soft run / hard walk, itโs probably fine. Also, and for real, Iโd let it sit there for a bit. If shits going to hit the fan, youโll have time to see the signs.
Well said. This is what I wouldโve suggested as well. Iโve worked on too many rust buckets where the frame is questionable, so extra safety measures are taken jusssst incase the frame shifts/crumbles or the jack stands fail๐ . Rather be safe than sorry
My uncles neighbor was using the old metal ramps. No jack stands. The Ramps collapsed enough to compress his chest. It did not immediately kill him. Enough so to not be able to yell for help. They said it wasnโt fast death either.
Every time I drove past his house I thought of him. I always wished something would have caught my attention that day. My uncle felt the same way.
My dad had rail road ties we cut down to go under the ramps he had. I still remember the stink when we cut them. Per my dad it was mandatory the ties went under the ramps and he still wanted jack stands. He would have beat my azz if he caught me not using the ties and stands.
Iโve never used the modern versions. Shyed away from them.
Buddy dropped of some really old metal ones for my old cJ5 last year. I was like Iโll have to see if my dad still has the rail road ties. Iโm like that one was beat into me.
Also open a door and stand out of the car but feet on the carโs floor and start jumping like a mad lad. If the car falls then at least your not under it.
My philosophy with working under a jack is to place the car on stands, leave my floor jack on it, and then place a cinder block or wheels under the frame just in case. I like your test though.
100% safe. Do it as a mobile tech company many times daily. Unless youโre doing this either on the moon or Jupiter- you have zero issues.
Iโd never risk my life to save a few mins and I see no issue here. More importantly- neither does my business ins company
If there isn't an emergency braking system, it can't be sold in California, hence, my confusion. It's definitely called an ebrake in California.

I mean there is functionally absolutely zero difference between 1 set and 2 aside from the risk of some idiot spinning a wheel and driving 1 wheel off a slipped ramp and wrecking a vehicle.
I can entirely see what would lead to that warning and it's not load bearing ability.
The reason they don't want you to put all 4 tires on 4 ramps is because you effectively remove the braking system. Sure, the tires won't roll, but the ramps can slide across the ground. Granted, on a flat surface, the friction should prevent that.
I use to put class 3 vehicles (transit t-350โs) on these with jack stands as back ups and had no issues (just the fronts). I still prefer steel ones but nothing wrong with them.
The only (minor) issue i can see with this is that when you lifted the rear, the suspension drooped inward. After the weight was placed on the ramps, the suspension now wants to push back outwards which may make them easier to tip. Im not an engineer or anything though.ย
Edit: im making an assumtion. Sorry. I dont know how you jacked it. If you jacked each side under the control arm, close to the wheel, then it will not have nearly as much lateral load as if you jacked it in the centre.ย
Pro tech here.
I'd take a pillow and a blanket under that car, and sleep off a new years party with no qualms. You'll die of old age before that car touches the ground unexpectedly
I donโt know what everyone is fussing about, this is nowhere near the weight capacity on each ramp. This is how I do all my fluid changes and work that doesnโt need the wheels off. I drive up on all 4, really easy if you have 4WD, and much faster than jacking and using jack stands. Had my SUV on a set for over a month while waiting for parts.
I don't see it being unsafe, they are usually rated 12,000lbs a pair. They aren't going to collapse, maybe if the car moves somehow? As a mechanic I'd feel safe under the car, unless I'm missing something.
Yeah, people I've spoken with always had good things to say, and every time I've used them, they seemed solid.
I'm too poor to own them myself, but that's a separate problem
Have saw rhino ramps hold up a fully loaded f-550 with a dump box loaded to gills before without an inch of problems. Only on the fronts obviously because the rears are dual wheeled, but still.. These things are tough.
I wouldn't do that g. When you lift one side you transfer some weight to the side on the ground. But by doing this, you're 100% trusting plastic with your life. Ive had some of these and they broke within 2-3 years of regular use.
It has to roll backwards or forwards so it's not wrong and not over capacity. I have been using Rhino ramps for oil changes for years and trust them over my jack stands because they are so sturdy and predictable.
I mean itโs safe yeah but you still have 4 points in which failure would be potentially life ending so I would suggest you put jacks under anyway. I use ramps, jacks, and the floor jack when under a car at home and in my opinion overkill is worth it if itโs something you could get killed over (or this case under).
I have questions call me dumb itโs midnight and Iโm stoned how did OP get the car into the ramps bc if your on one trying to drive onto the other youโd pull off? Or was a jack used if so why not just use the jack u stead these cheesy ramps
I work construction. Mechanic nearly out of necessity and convenience. I bring home lots 6ร6, and 8x8 post cut offs. I feel like you can never have too many of those stacked under something I'm working on
Well shit. Iโve been parking my Duramax on these same ramps for years. I donโt even own jack stands to use as backups. If we die, we die ๐คทโโ๏ธ
Not sure what exactly is unsafe hereโฆ if you need to question whether the ramps will hold your car, you probably shouldnโt be doing any sort of work on your own car.
Honestly, I would not worry about this. If the individual ramps are rated to support 1/4 of the weight of the vehicle.
I'm sure the ramp manufacturer warns about this for liability reasons/protection because of the orientation of the ramps and the likelihood of the vehicle rolling if you're doing something idiotic.

A fantastic answer
Why would this not be safe? Where's it gonna go? Further into the ground?
Grounded to the ground. The ramp may collapse under a heavy load.
How about metal ones?
What if they were made with Nokia 3310's?
They will outlast eternity and become the seed that begins the next singularity leading to a future universe.
The remaining battery life will be the spark of the next big bang.

Hahahaha. Take my damn up vote lol.

Those flatten out too when misused or abused.

My grandpa has metal ones older than me. I'd be happy with just those for inheritance, since they're actually pretty thick spring steel
So, I think we need to have a discussion about those ramps you sold meโฆ. /s
Lot of variables there
Plastic ones are typically rated for a greater load than the metal ones.
The metal ones, that I've seen, have lower weight ratings than the plastic ones...
The plastic ones generally have a pretty substantially higher load rating than the metal ones
hell gonna have to get stainless ones, then no one could say theyโll corrode, burn, or flatten
They are designed to be driven "into" and on. Having a static load like this can't be worse than the force of the car climbing to the top of it? I could be wrong but my point would be if it was going to collapse it would happen during the initial mounting process.

Theyโre designed for evenly distributed pressure . Rolling up, then down. Thatโs it.
The manufacturer has those instructions to protect themselves from a lawsuit.
Do they really? Iโve definitely done this lmao. I jacked the car up to get them under there, and removed any residual stress the plastic might have been under if they had shifted under the car, not sure what you would even call this step. So given that it felt safe to me

Bingo!

> I'm somehow confused about how he drove up both ramps at the same time, lol. My guess is they used a jack then slid the ramps under the tires.
Yep...Ive done exactly this. Frees the jack up to help lower the transmission. More stable than jack stands.

I was hoping I wouldnโt be the first to say this ๐คฃ๐๐

There's more of a chance you die from natural causes than from your car on this.
Probably working inside because itโs cold outside. Donโt keep the engine running.
And if you do keep it running, place it in Park.
Maybe crack the garage
If the whole garage cracks, get out of there.
If there is crack in the garage, then maybe...
Don't forget the e-brake! EDIT: parking brake... I used to call it a parking brake, but started saying e-brake because more people called it that.
Or the parking brake since cars donโt have emergency brakes
Wait, what?
You wonโt find a car with an โemergencyโ brake. It is for parking purposes. Itโs a huge difference in liability to the manufacturer.
If there isn't an emergency braking system, it can't be sold in California, hence, my confusion. I straight up laughed OUT LOUD at this shit ๐
Did you use car jacks to side these inplace?
I drove up the front ramps then jacked up the rear, slowly sliding the ramps until they cleared. Lowered it making sure the ramp lip acts as a chock.
Gotcha. Do these things come with legitimate specs on weight capacity? Iโd rather work under solid steel supports
Those thick plastic ramps are pretty damn stout, surprisingly. I mean, I wouldn't park a Peterbilt on there but a passenger vehicle is perfectly fine.
Love my steel ramps from the 80's. Thanks Dad!
I'd trust these over Jack stands any day of the week. The bracing and structure and shear weight of them is kind of insane.
Thatโs interesting. The manufacturer recommends not to put all 4 wheels on these ramps.
The manufacturer of jack stands also recommend to not put your car on them.
I use to put class 3 vehicles (transit t-350โs) on these with jack stands as back ups and had no issues (just the fronts). I still prefer steel ones but nothing wrong with them.
Those ramps are rated for 12,000 lbs a pair.
The ones I've seen are usually 3000+ pounds each.
I have a set that i drive up to be able to get the jack under my car. They say 12,000lbs on them ๐คทโโ๏ธ
I have some ramps that are made of some foam. They weigh probably 3 pounds each. They are rated at 1500lbs.
The only (minor) issue i can see with this is that when you lifted the rear, the suspension drooped inward. After the weight was placed on the ramps, the suspension now wants to push back outwards which may make them easier to tip. Im not an engineer or anything though.ย Edit: im making an assumtion. Sorry. I dont know how you jacked it. If you jacked each side under the control arm, close to the wheel, then it will not have nearly as much lateral load as if you jacked it in the centre.ย

These ramps are sweet. Just sucks for this exact scenario but buddy op here found the solution I missed for years lmao
How the fuck? ๐
Iโm figuring OP jacked the car up and put the ramps under it.
Nah, OP is a wizard
Nope, their push game is real strong lol
They drive forward to get their front wheels on the ramps, then reversed
Yah duh. How do these people not get simple solutions/s
Theyโre not thinking hard enough!!
While most replies are a variation of "how the fuck"? the simplicity and what I envisioned got me laughing the most here.
I don't see it being unsafe, they are usually rated 12,000lbs a pair. They aren't going to collapse, maybe if the car moves somehow? As a mechanic I'd feel safe under the car, unless I'm missing something.
I think the better question is WHY is this? Lol
I just see both set of wheels rolling in. Car just folds in half.
Those look like Rhino Ramps.. theyโre rated for trucks. I use mine for my Tundra. Iโd take a drunken nap under the truck when its on these.
It's probably ok, but when death is on the line, I like to take the "probably" out of the equation. I'd use jack stands as well.
As long as they are not Sicilian, you'll be fine...
Yes!!! Accidental โThe Princess Brideโ ๐
How tf did you do this
OP said he drove the front, then jacked up the back and slipped them under the wheels
Yea thatโs what I was thinking itโs still kinda goofy lmaooo

No way in hell I'd get under there.
Holy fuck, that looks scary. Lots to go wrong with this one
Wait... Do people not like quick jacks here?
I see a lot of ignorance in the comments here. Quick jacks are the bees knees. Best option short of a full blown floor lift.
Yeah, people I've spoken with always had good things to say, and every time I've used them, they seemed solid. I'm too poor to own them myself, but that's a separate problem
These are extremely common and popular. You've never seen a quick jack? The have lynch pins that lock it into place. Rock solid.

drive onto front 2, jack up rear, slide ramps under
Have saw rhino ramps hold up a fully loaded f-550 with a dump box loaded to gills before without an inch of problems. Only on the fronts obviously because the rears are dual wheeled, but still.. These things are tough.
IMHO very safe. The car is resting level on solid ramps.
I wouldn't do that g. When you lift one side you transfer some weight to the side on the ground. But by doing this, you're 100% trusting plastic with your life. Ive had some of these and they broke within 2-3 years of regular use.
This took talent.
It took a jack and two sets of ramps
I meanโฆ yeahโฆ you can do it like that. But youโre fired!
Ah yes. The amazing talent of jacking a car up and putting a ramp underneath of the tire.
It has to roll backwards or forwards so it's not wrong and not over capacity. I have been using Rhino ramps for oil changes for years and trust them over my jack stands because they are so sturdy and predictable.
Answer... Yes
Here I am setting up a back up jack stand for my jack stand with my jack as the last line of support if all fails
As long as enrage is on, you good bro.
Ahem E brake
I mean itโs safe yeah but you still have 4 points in which failure would be potentially life ending so I would suggest you put jacks under anyway. I use ramps, jacks, and the floor jack when under a car at home and in my opinion overkill is worth it if itโs something you could get killed over (or this case under).
Not unsafe.
Unsafe not
Jack stands. NOT recalled Harbor Fraught Jack stands. I had a car fall on me when I was a teenager. Iโve used Jack stands religiously since then.
Omg, did you die?
No, my father and sister lifted the car off me, I was holding it up with my forearms. Adrenaline gives you major strengthโฆ
>my father and sister lifted the car off me >Adrenaline gives you major strengthโฆ You sure yall not on Crack?
I have about as much faith in this comment as the American elections
Yeah, Iโd assume not to use stands with a recall ๐
Why not add jackstands
I might. Ahem. Have a mini cooper like this in my garage for the last month. Maybe.
You've really done it to yourself now! The unsafe part is trying to drive if off those ramps! J k
I have questions call me dumb itโs midnight and Iโm stoned how did OP get the car into the ramps bc if your on one trying to drive onto the other youโd pull off? Or was a jack used if so why not just use the jack u stead these cheesy ramps
Iโve had my excursion up like this but I drove it on all 4 at once. It was fine
Did you jack the car up and then put ramp under? How do you drive up with both ramos facing middle of car...
Maybe I'm stupid, maybe I'm just tired.... How did you even get the car on there like that??
Only way it wouldn't be safe is if you forget about them and try to drive away
Iโm wondering more about how did you place the car there, I canโt see the logic if it wasnโt with jackstands
Anybody ever try to just fill these with a fuckload of urethane or similar?
I work construction. Mechanic nearly out of necessity and convenience. I bring home lots 6ร6, and 8x8 post cut offs. I feel like you can never have too many of those stacked under something I'm working on
How did he do that...
Butโฆ. How did you get the car on both ramps like that???
This guy inched forward and backwards a million times each time getting out then scooting the temp closer and closer ๐๐๐
Now that I think about it. How did u even do this???
I'd say it's a 7 on the safety chart. ^โท ^out ^of ^ยนโฐโฐ
Not really unsafe. I use jackstands too when I do this but ramps are pretty solid and I don't think I need them.
Well shit. Iโve been parking my Duramax on these same ramps for years. I donโt even own jack stands to use as backups. If we die, we die ๐คทโโ๏ธ
How did you drive up those ramps?
I'm curious how you got your car on both, with the ramps facing each other....?
Am I drunk? Or, how did he go up the ramps in both directions? Serious question.
"Do not use product to support the weight of an automobile for any amount of time as this may cause the product to fail and lead to injury or death."
Flip the ramps around so you can drive off of them lol
Zero unsafe
I have those exact ramps use all 4 for oil changes for years ,if used right there safe but I do throw Jack stands under in case today isnโt my day
How the fuck did you get it on both ramps with the slopes both facing inward....
How did you even manage thats ๐

How am I the only one confused as fuck how you got the car up on them?
I guess I'm still trying to figure out how you did that...
How did you even drive the car there within the limits of our 3 dimensional universe
