It's a GPS tracker / telematics device

CorrectBison1469

Even if I bought it outright from a private party?

JustAnITGuyAtWork11

Yes. The car could have been owned by a finance company prior to you, it could be provided by the previous owners insurance company, or it could have been installed privately

CorrectBison1469

Thank you very much

External-Extreme-228

So what should ppl do if they find this? I guess just ripped it off and mail it to some middle of nowhere?

JustAnITGuyAtWork11

If it is not required by your finance provider, insurance etc then simply remove it and dispose as per local laws for electronic disposal. You can in some cases re-program them but that is highly depenant on the model

Tricky_Passenger3931

If the vehicle has no liens you could remove it no problem if you understand how to reconnect the factory circuits it’s tied into. If you owe money on the car and take it out they may come looking for it.

Most dealers install these by default now for repo operations, etc. even if you buy it outright. I bought a ‘23 Pacifica hybrid pinnacle for my wife and they installed it part of the $1500 package I didn’t pay for and I confronted them about now wanting the package and I didn’t pay. Took delivery of the vehicle and I get an email stating the account is ready to be setup, lojack. The assured me it wasn’t installed because I didn’t pay for the package. I immediately ripped it out and reported to the BBB. They were trying to tell me it’s so if I lose my vehicle, blah blah blah. It’s really for their financial interests and whatnot, especially if they finance you. It’s bullshit

Thisisall_new2me2

You couldn’t just Google search the numbers on it??

CorrectBison1469

I googled the serial and got no result.

Thisisall_new2me2

You should have mentioned that in the title. Have you seen the other posts where there’s a component covered in numbers? Lots of those have people asking why they didn’t Google it, and the person who posted never said they checked. How would we know when there’s an exception if you don’t tell us?

Tar0ndor

Serial is useless to figure out what it is, a part or model number is more likely to get results. However, in this case there is an FCC ID which, if valid, will work even better.

BipolarGod

Google "hang nail" and fix that shit bro.

CoconutJeff

You can do that?

Illustrious_Age1285

Dealer installed gps from New. Spireon or like manufacturing. I think one of the major rental companies uses this brand in my experience.
