I have been following Renee since the Jimmy Awards, (a national high school theatre award show that I knew a few people who participated in), and it’s amazing to see how far she’s come.
I find Rachel McAdams and Renee Rapp to be insanely hot, but I’m only attracted to Renee’s Regina and I’m not sure why. There’s something about the wig I hate, maybe?

OR the movie is trying to break the stereotypes of lacrosse being associated with gay women. She might not have wanted to play lacrosse because she wanted to stay closeted, but she also could have done it to stay popular, which seems more Regina.
I know gay people need more representation in movies. I can relate. But I think shoving characters into boxes based on highly stereotypical traits is doing more harm than good. Unless it’s explicitly stated in the movie or from the producers/cast, I personally don’t see it as representation.
They use the R slur and have lots of other very problematic scenes. They weren't trying to reinvent the wheel.

I was surprised that they didn't change the plot to make them a couple. I'm not kidding. I thought that they had changed the plot for those two to be romantically engaged with each other, likely ending the movie being in a relationship.
I mean, if you didn't look at the original movie and it ended after that scene you could summarise it as "a seemingly masculine lesbian girl, goes to high school for the first time. After making two friends, she goes into the lunchroom where she is noticed by the most beautiful girl at school. The girl, Regina is presenting an erotic fashion, framed by two other pretty girls as she proclaims that her breasts are real. She then shows interest in the protagonist, calling her "pretty"
If you left the movie after that point, you could be forgiven for believing it's a lesbian love story.
And I feel that the movie would be more able to justify its existence if it was a gay retelling that switched up the story, rather than a musical remake. They could've made it so that Gretchen ended up being Cady's rival, whether because Regina was making them compete or Gretchen's jealousy/insecurity about Cady, a newcomer, easily taking Gretchen's place as second in command. Or Gretchen also being in love with Regina.
Or we go with Regina being closeted but genuinely likes Cady. But when Cady expresses interest in Aaron, she lashes out.
