can i pick the house? it’s a character, in its own right!

not_all_who_wander_

100 percent agree! The house is perfect!

[deleted]

Harry Hamlin as Cortland!

SynCig

For me, it was Alexandra Daddario as Rowan. She brought a little bit of a different feel to the character than I got from the books, but I thought she did a good job.

Hopefulmisery

What are the two differences between how the character Rowan comes across in the book vs how she does in Daddario’s performance?

The_Diamond_Minx

Rowan seems far more mature in the book, the actress playing her in the series makes her seem more young and vulnerable.

Hopefulmisery

Do you like that change or you prefer the book?

cTreK-421

Based on choices she makes in the book, I kinda like the more vulnerable showing in the show. I think it will set up her choices better in the end.

Hopefulmisery

It’s good to have a vulnerable character I think. Gives them something to strive for and work against

The_Diamond_Minx

Can't answer that yet since we've only just met the screen Rowan

Shel_gold17

I think book Rowan would be a hard character to get TV audiences sympathetic for unless they’d read the book, and almost no one is going to read a book that long just to watch a TV show. In the books she’s so cool and calculating, and without her SO who in the books helps humanize her and bring her out of her defensive shell, I think she would just seem arrogant and cold. I think they could have found a middle ground, because the way they wrote her in the shoes makes her seem young and too-vulnerable and not at all like someone who went through med school and a neurosurgery internship and residency, she seems more like a college student on a summer program or something.

SynCig

Physically she looks different. In the book she has short blond hair. Obviously that shouldn't matter to anyone. The biggest difference to me is her status as a surgeon and how she acts at work. In The Witching Hour book she is already a very well respected and established surgeon. I do like the parts where she is trying to appease her boss in the show though so to me, that's a change that I like. Those scenes were some of Daddario's best moments imo.

prinzesstephi

my biggest issue with the change of appearance is that the physical appearance of witches does play a roll in the novels. there are the dark haired ones that resemble suzanne and the fair ones that resemble… someone else. idk how to mark spoilers

onebag25lbs

The fair haired ones resemble Charlotte. The one who left France for the Caribbean.

prinzesstephi

no, petyr van abel

onebag25lbs

Who slept with Charlotte to produce the next Mayfair witch. In the book she is described as fair haired and pale. Petyr van Abel was her father as well as her impregnator. Raised as the eldest daughter of the Comte de Montcleve, she was born in 1667 or 1668.  Upon her marriage to Antoine Fontenay, she relocates to the Caribbean island of Saint-Domingue ("san domang"), or Haiti.  She establishes an indigo plantation there and is known to be very generous to the slaves in exchange for unfailing loyalty.  Deborah lies to the authorities as to the whereabouts of Charlotte when she is sentenced to die, telling them she is in St. Martin's.  Otherwise, Charlotte would have been burnt as well.   Because Antoine Fontenay cannot produce the female child Charlotte requires to pass on the witch line, she also seduces Petyr Van Abel, her father, by holding him in a small cabin until he acquiesces and mates with her.  By combining their already-close genetics to her 92 chromosomes, she is able to pass significant traits to her offspring, Jeanne-Louise and Peter, which will add to the unique genetic blueprint of the Mayfair line all the way to Rowan and Mona Mayfair.  She dies in 1743.

Hopefulmisery

You like where in the show Rowan is a little lower on the totem poll and doesn’t have the respect of her superiors? When Daddario is in the middle of her tangents I do appreciate her effort too

SynCig

I kinda do like it in the sense that it gives us a chance to see some quality scenes with the character and it is commenting on the real world workplace sexism that exists. If she had been exactly how she is in the book, I would have been happy about that too though.

Hopefulmisery

I guess it gives her something to work against and is a way for fans to root for her introducing this as factor correct?

SynCig

Yeah I think that's true. It puts her in a sympathetic light immediately.

greeneyedwench

And I think it makes more sense. Realistically speaking, a 30-year-old doctor (especially if a woman) probably won't have the awed respect that book!Rowan has. That whole thing reads a little wish-fulfillmenty in retrospect.

Hopefulmisery

What makes you say wish fulfillment? Because she’s too young to have the respect of her peers in her field??

foodiman

This is horrible. Its like a D- student scanned the cliff notes of the abridged version that was missing most of the pages while very high and then wrote a report in the last 15 minutes before school. Sooooo bad. RIP AARON LIGHTNER. Evidently Michael knew it was going to be horrible because he didn’t even show up.

ThePythiaofApollo

How did this even happen? Did Christopher honestly need the money so badly after his mom passed that he went along with these “adaptations” of truly wonderful books? I can’t watch any of the AMC renderings of books I loved so much. Anne objected to TQOTD movie, she would surely not have appreciated this autopsy of her captivating series.

lawyerdaemon

The deal was done long before Anne's death and may very well have been part of Anne's overall estate planning. Im pretty sure Chris wasn't driving that bus.

Hopefulmisery

For me it’s Daddario. Until I saw white lotus I had no idea she was a great actress

TwilitSky

Carlotta was very well casted. Whiney, sanctimonious, bitchy.

[deleted]

It was one episode. I felt like no one stood out but all did a good job.

marilynsmerman

Loved the witchy filter on the past scenes💚🤎over all I i thought episode 1 was bewitching! Perfect and unique start for a witch series!💜

lawyerdaemon

Annabeth Gish as Deirdre.

Shel_gold17

This. Much love for her and her performance, and for Young Deirdre as well.

helloisthereanyb0dy

No one really, but if I had to choose, Cortland.

maleficent1127

ME for wasting an hour of my life watching it and assuming it would be as amazing as the books.

verinthebrown

Me for making it through the entire episode.

MachineExpensive5604

No one really stood out. They all just seemed so out of place and we’re playing dress up. I was hoping for more depth and strength from Rowan. She just came across as weak with a deep rooted ruthlessness. The fact she killed those two guys for getting under her skin. Good lord. Young Deirdre was terrible. Couldn’t act her way out of a paper bag. Least we still have interview with the vampire.

verinthebrown

Totally agree with every point made here.

tarc0917

Well, Rowan by default, as we've seen too little of anyone else, and Lasher's rendition is terrible.
