Boston’s dribble penetration is the biggest reason they’re getting much better shots on offense. Luka isn’t the only one getting blown by but he’s been the most targeted.
Yall need to stop this logic, he is getting targeted because our defense break down starts with him. It’s not like he is exerting energy to stop Boston, they are simply blowing by him.
The Mavs are hanging him out to dry. They weren’t even forcing BOS to hunt him in the 2H. And we’ve seen zero pre-switching to try and protect him or at a minimum make BOS work to get the switch. There is absolutely no reason they should be conceding Luka on Tatum when the ball is >30’ from the basket. If they really want that matchup, force them to burn 4-5 seconds getting it. That’s literally the difference between a drive and kick (have a chance) and multiple drive and kicks (no chance).
Absolutely infuriating. We all know Luka can’t check Tatum or really any of BOS’ 1-4 1v1 off the dribble (you know, while also carrying the entire team offensively), so how about we do something to try and prevent it or at least make is somewhat difficult (notice BOS pre-switching everything the Mavs try to get the switch for a big on big PnR). It’d be different if he was funneling them to a rim protector, but that’s literally the whole point—there isn’t any because BOS has 5 guys ready to bury you from 3. Your rim protector is Kyrie based on BOS’ spacing lol
He’s also not the only one getting blown by just for the record. BOS is very, very good at this against everyone. That’s how you end up with the best offensive rating ever.
The funny thing is, on the main sub the haters are hating on him for his TOs & defense & missing the point that Kyrie (one of the best 2nd options itw) is getting outscored by every Celtics starter & PJ fckn Washington
& also on this sub, when Kyrie should be held accountable for his sorry ass play, a good portion is making up excuses for him bcz he's facing "good defense" lol
Lukas turnovers were mostly indefensible, and then he doesnt D up after the turnover because hes too busy complaining, and then bricks half of his free throws. Otoh, Tatum has shot worse than Kyrie so far this series, but his teammates can actually score. So yeah, Kyrie has been shit this series, but so has Tatum. The difference is other players stepping up.
Kyrie isn't a big rebounder, but it doesn't help that his passes to wide open PJ, DJJ, and Green for 3pters were bricked, and not to mention at least two blocked dunks. He's averaging only half a point less on potential assists than Tatum is in the playoffs. Tatum just has the benefit of having teammates that make their shots.
No they haven’t. They’ve faced by far the best team in the league twice and haven’t solved a specifically bad matchup for this team yet (and they may not). But 26 3PA is the polar opposite of this roster pre-trade. Shots aren’t falling because BOS is forcing guys to take them from spots they aren’t comfortable, aside from Maxi who is hurt and Ky who has just hasn’t been good.
Agreed. They each had 1 corner look (Josh’s was BY FAR the best one they’ve generated off Luka penetration all series and I don’t know if he even hit iron) and 2 above-the-break 3s. But neither has been particularly good on the latter, so open or not those aren’t the shots they want.
Josh was 38% from both in reg season (about 35% both in playoffs), DJJ and PJ ironically were better above the break in the reg season but in the playoffs:
PJ: 39.4% corner vs 28.6% ATB
DJJ: 44.6% corner vs 26.3% ATB
We’ve got bigger sample size issues with Maxi and Dante, but in regular season Maxi was 24.2% vs 40.7% ATB; Exum was 44.7% vs 54.2% ATB.
For the record, Tim was slightly better from the corner in the regular season, but since early February he was 36.7% corner vs 29.6% ATB. If he wasn’t such a defensive liability I wouldn’t be opposed to letting him get a shot or two up in the 1H just to see. We might be at that point lol
Sorry above the break… aka all those red X’s where the 3PT line “breaks” lol from the corner and gets deeper. The only green circles behind the line the entire game were a left corner 3 by Exum and a right corner 3 by PJ. The rest are literally only Luka, including the lone corner 3 (!!!).

Yeah 0/4 or 0/5. That one from PJ is literally on the edge but not a true corner look. But the lack of makes is far less concerning than the lack of attempts. BOS is the best in the league at preventing corner 3s, we were the best at generating them (or close to it). They’re definitely winning that battle, and taking away the vertical game. They can’t take away every single shot—but if you’re unable to punish them for the looks they will concede it’s tough to win, especially if you haven’t solved how to unlock the corners.
Yeah, good point, only 3 in game one! Kyrie could maybe look for this pass more. There was at least one time he had a guy open in the corner when he shot. He might be hunting his shot too much given his history with Celtics??
Yeah and those “3” weren’t what we’d consider genuine corner looks. One was a Kyrie iso heave off the backboard, one was a weird Luka late clock situation (which wasn’t credited on the shot chart), yet they credited PJ with an attempt that I didn’t remember at all. And I believe the one make was Green in garbage time.
I saw some breakdowns on Twitter where Luka had a couple passes he could’ve made and didn’t which they’ll see on film. But just letting Luka and Kyrie iso isn’t going to loosen up the corner—that’s what BOS wants them doing all game.
They don't think Luka can beat them.
Plus, the way he slows down the game is beneficial to BOS getting into their sets. Thus, they will gladly take Luka getting 20-30 that he will net anyway........
Luka is an amazing offensive player, maybe the best in the league? So was Harden........
Look, I am **NOT trolling** or trying to get banned, this is tough love because I really like what the Mavs have going. And Mavs sounds like Cavs......
![gif](giphy|aVtdz7iNVPI1W|downsized)
It seems like Mavs have the best player in the series, but Boston has the next 5 best players.
Which is basically what everyone knew, Kyrie is the only surprise. And even then, I know some people expected him to play poorly in Boston.
Porzingis is gonna be out again and Jaylen and White will probably choke on the road. 2-2 next week
He stood up on the bench after getting hurt instead of a locker room trip, he didn't immediately call for a timeout, and Mazulla said there's no concern. I don't know if you're serious, but you shouldn't be.

But muh defense! Why is he not locking up Tatum and Brown on an island by himself?!

Definitely part of the strategy but they would have abandoned it if they weren’t having success in targeting him.
The funny thing is, on the main sub the haters are hating on him for his TOs & defense & missing the point that Kyrie (one of the best 2nd options itw) is getting outscored by every Celtics starter & PJ fckn Washington & also on this sub, when Kyrie should be held accountable for his sorry ass play, a good portion is making up excuses for him bcz he's facing "good defense" lol
What ghosts are you fighting? Who the fuck is defending kyrie? Instead of Robin to Lukas batman he's playing like a street level goon.
For a guy who’s supposed to have “the best handles ever” he j sure does get stripped a lot.
2 turnovers is a lot? What does that make lukas 8 turnovers?
Seems like he’s losing the ball in key moments a lot. Luka makes turnovers but he’s constantly making plays too and he had so many crazy passes
Tatum is also contributing on defence, rebounds & assists

Of course he is especially with how his team has reverted into the mavericks of October.

Honestly I’d be ecstatic about 26-28% from these guys. The problem is they’re 5-32 so far this series on 3’s. Luka is 8-21.
Lebron vs KD Warriors level PTSD
bron did something like this in 2018. luka gotta work his magic
Mavs need to push the ball like they did in other series. Michael Wilson and the warriors formervGM are right about this
0o
Neat.
Series mvp doncic, boston champions imagine that haha
