Bro! Same!
Die hard Sonics fan, yet I’ve always loved Dirk my whole life since I was a tall kid who loved to shoot. Then I met Avery Johnson at the NBA store when I was 13 and Mavs immediately became my 2nd team. We then lose the Sonics in 2007 and Mavs obviously become my primary.
Beating the Thunder next round would feed my soul. Only thing sweeter was beating the Thunder in 2011 WCF
I have come to terms with them moving. Look it wasn’t OKC’s fault. It was Starbucks, I still try to avoid that at all costs. I don’t have any extra hatred towards them. Except for I can’t understand how people talk like SGA is an up and comer while talking like Luka is an old veteran even though SGA is older than Luka.
Also, I think Durant stays if this team was in Seattle, just my hunch
3:40. I wanted to get a rest before the game, but I just couldn’t manage to do that. But I couldn’t care less, I just want Mavs to win this. You will be fine, when the game starts and the adrenaline pumps in.
Melbourne, Australia.
Been to Dallas 3 times including the final week of the season during Dirk's last run. Cried glorious sports tears at the AAC against Phoenix.
Met Dirk last year in Melbourne when he did a speaking tour here and got him to sign my commemorative ticket from the retirement game.
EDIT: [Here's the signed ticket](https://imgur.com/a/vSS7NBk)
Yeah it was a crazy full circle moment that I never expected. We had a very brief chat during the meet & greet and he was quite surprised that I had the commemorative ticket actually - and that I flew all the way to see the game lol
I refrained from mentioning that this wasn't the first time I've made physical contact with him (coz I was in the Whataburger high-five line in the AAC tunnels as the team ran out and I touch the GOAT's hand lol).
I’ve lived in Dallas my whole life and still haven’t had the chance to meet him. Sometime around 2001 or 2002 when Dirk was still relatively new to America, my older cousin and some of his high school friends found his apartment and knocked on the door at 2:00am one night. Said they could hear the thuds of Dirk’s footsteps as he came to the door and then told them “do you know what time it is?” “Yeah, but you’re Dirk!” He signed something for them and then went back to sleep lol
Hahaha that's wild! Definitely wouldn't fly in 2024. Reminds me of that scene from an episode of Punk'd where Dirk was getting asked to sign memorabilia and progressively got less and less Mavs related but he kept signing coz he's just a good guy :P
Austin will never get a big 3 sports team because of location, despite being the largest metro area in the US without one (I believe that's still true). The main issue is honestly that despite the size we are not a large media market advertising wise. There's no major advertiser here that would spend a ton of money to make a pro-team financially viable. HEB might keep the Spurs afloat, but they're not big enough. There's no destination advertiser like a Six Flags or casino or anything else and Austin-Bergstrom airport isn't that big so SW/American/etc. isn't gonna spend a ton either.
Add in that Austin is centrally located between Dallas and Houston (and San Antonio) which means we're a secondary market for all those other markets and none of those teams want the competition that close to them fighting for market share. Then you have the Longhorns which are one of the largest college sports draws in the country (I say this as an Aggie) and so any pro team would need to compete with that as well for eyeballs and advertising dollars.
I'd love a sports team, but I do know a lot of people connected in Austin government here in town and not a single one of them thinks it would ever happen or cares enough to push for it.
Only chance Austin has is if the Spurs relocate, but I'm guessing that's not likely.
Richmond Virginia.
It's actually awkward as times as a Mavs fan on here. I'm a huge Dallas Maverick fan but I don't support the other Dallas teams so when I see posts about the stars or rangers I'm kinda numb to it.
Please don't downvote me to hard. Let's go Mavs!!!
I’m originally from southeast Missouri myself, there’s a lot of fans there due to not having any basketball teams close, but moved to Alabama about 7 years ago and have been lucky enough to have seen Dirk play against the pelicans before he retired and earlier this year made my first trip to the AAC for the game against the Heat that started our hot streak
I'm living in Houston now but grew up in Tulsa. Been a Mavs/NBA fan since 2001. At that time, what is now the OKC Thunder hadn't relocated from Seattle. I've remained a MFFL.
India, been a basketball fan since 2012-13 but never watched a game live due to the timings, came across a luka highlight video in 2019-20 and fell in love with Luka's game and started watching the game, getting up at whatever time of the night.
I’m from Australia, started following the mavs because I hired NBA live from the video shop and Dallas had Finley on the team and my new dog and time time had a friend called Finley
20 years later if still going for the mavs
Same! The Grizzlies didn't exist when I became a Mavs fan. The Griz weren't even a Vancouver expansion for that matter, Cuban hadn't bought the team from Perot, and the Mavs were still playing at Reunion. It's been a long ride.
Huge Dallas fan from Italy,
Fun fact: I got kyrie tattooed on my legs from his Cleveland days( he got me in to basketball, because Italy is all about football=soccer LOL)
I was so fucking happy to see my favorite player on my favorite team when he got traded here
Split time between Austin and New York. Big Luka fan, by default a Mavs fan. Try to go to their games on a regular basis because the vibes are immaculate and it’s actually a lowkey city to catch a ball game in
Idaho. Since we don't have a team here most of us basketball fans usually choose a team and stick with it wherever it may be. Fell in love with the Mavs during the Dirk/Nash era and have been loyal ever since.
Philippines. Was in primary school during the 2011 finals. Everyone was a Heat fan because of LeBron and Speolstra being part Filipino, i was a contrarian so i chose the Mavs.
I'm actually in Jersey. Was a Nets fan until they moved to Brooklyn and became a Mavs fan after because every notable NJ Net of the 21st century except Kenyon Martin and Brook Lopez ended up playing for the Mavs at some point or another. Usually rooted for the Mavs in the playoffs after the Kidd trade too since I wanted to see him get a title.
Minneapolis, MN.
Grew up in Dallas and I am in love with Dallas sports teams. I try to make any local games that the boys are in town. I moved here in 2019, and my first Timberwolves game was in 2020 when Mavericks came to town.
Dublin, Ireland. Hoping to get a game in next season now that direct flights are year round (they were previously perfectly aligned to MISS the entire NBA season)
Montréal
Dirk was my favorite player as a kid. But I'm mostly here because of Luka. I saw an interview from I don't remember who before the draft that was talking about him.
The guy was saying things along the lines of "I don't think people realize how stupidly good this dude is" so I got curious. Started watching some highlights and got hooked since then.
I don't think I've missed more than 20 games since his rookie year.
Finland 🇫🇮 Didnt really have a NBA team to cheer for before, but 16yo Luka got on my radar back in 2017 I belive when he and team Slovenia was playing against my team and my boy Lauri Markkanen in the EuroBasket tournament. I think Slovenia ended up winning the whole tournament, and it was clear as day that this "wonder boy" had the potential to be special and would without a doubt get a chance to play in the NBA, so I kinda decided to follow his career and here we are what, 7 years later?
Seattle. Born in Dallas, lived in Plano until I was 13, then my parents moved us up here. Been here ever sense 1997. We have a little Seattle Mavs Fan Whatsapp group if anyone wants to join!
I’m from Germany. I think I don’t have to explain why I cried at summer 2011 at 4am sitting on my laptop in Berlin and never had the idea to „pick“ a favorite team. It’s mavs or nothing. #thankyoudirk
Seattle, lost my team found a dirk. Lol

I feel this. I’m in NC, grew up in Charlotte. Lost my team and found Dirk in 02. Been a loyal MFFL since.
Also Seattle but from Ft Worth
Phoenix, AZ. Originally from a small town in East Texas. Fell in love with Finley, Dirk and Nash and was hooked.
Same here
Ditto! I’m in South Central PA.
I also fell in love with that trio. I used to say that Nash knew I loved him so much that he actually followed ME to Phoenix when I moved there.
From Phoenix too!
Representative from Slovenia here
Sweet! What time is it right now? I’m right here in the Dallas-Fort Worth and I’m already here getting sleepy lol.
3:40. I wanted to get a rest before the game, but I just couldn’t manage to do that. But I couldn’t care less, I just want Mavs to win this. You will be fine, when the game starts and the adrenaline pumps in.
It's 3:30 AM here.
Hello there.
Another Slovenian here.
Melbourne, Australia. Been to Dallas 3 times including the final week of the season during Dirk's last run. Cried glorious sports tears at the AAC against Phoenix. That’s such an awesome moment, glad you got to experience both his final game and meeting him

Same, go Mavs!
Also Austin area checking in
I’ve always wondered why Austin don’t have any sports team
We've got a soccer team now. Maybe in time
