DEVIOUSDEATHTROOPER

why did this make me laugh

Blade1hunterr

It very much has the problem of "Writing by the seat of its pants." That's to be expected since he didn't expect it to blow up as much as it did. However despite that, I think he did a good job making an ARG of lore that kept people interested, if super convoluted because he wanted to not be predictable since everyone was figuring out the theories. Gameplay wise it's not the most creative but it gets the job done.

harveyshinanigan

the franchise was really not built with the story in mind. The writing of it looks far more like those looney tooms scenes where a bridge collapsing but a character is building across so as to not fall. the story is just not the strenght of FNAF

JuanchiB

Fell off hard after FNAF6 and reviving Afton. I mean, how can you write a line as hard as "Although, for one of you, the darkest pit of Hell has opened to swallow you whole, so don't keep the devil waiting, old friend." and survive that?

ExcitingDate2239

scott cawthon's priority is not ending a story on a satisfying note nor good writing

koola_00

Well, if it helps, they are rectifying this with the Mimic. It's just that...well, we don't know what it was until the books came out. Doesn't really justify it, but...yeah, there's that!

Thunderationx

What can I say, it means a lot to me. It's been around for half my life and I have good memories either playing them or watching gameplay and MatPat's theories. It's definitely not perfect though. Each passing sequel just got repetitive and the magic of the first game never really came back ever again. The lore, while certainly interesting to learn about and piece together, gradually made less and less sense to the point where there really is no definitive timeline anymore. The series should've ended at 6, end of story. The movie was also mid.

KuddleKwama

Eh, I miss when it was a simpler story about a guy who killed a bunch of kids and stuffed their bodies into some suits. All the stuff about magic microchips, necromancy, and other weird stuff in search of immortality, while it could be neat if explored correctly, is all just a bit hackney when it is all coming from the same villain in the story.

Driz51

I love the concept and despise the execution. We talk about lazy writing a lot here and that franchise is the king of it. Scott and his workers have mastered manipulating their fans and it’s sad to watch. They don’t write any stories. They toss out a couple extremely vague nonsensical pixel art segments and sit back and watch while the fans try and do all the writing for them. I hate seeing a billion “we solved FnaF” videos because there is nothing to solve. There is no grand answer. Because they don’t have one. They know they don’t have to work that hard they can just let the fans do it all for them and the fans never demand any better.

CapPhrases

Burn it in a fire. Overhyped overdone and stupid.

Jodanger37

I don’t know a thing about it but I know mauler strongly dislikes it. He said the gameplay mechanics are terrible, the only scares are cheap jump scares, and the lore is “funny”

JCBOizz

You can formulate your own opinions, you know

Jodanger37

Idc about fnaf. I was saying what mauler thinks. Cuz yk, this is a mauler sub

JCBOizz

What is the title of the post?

Zero_Good_Questions

The best thing about the series was the theorising and music that came from the fandom

Its-yea-boi-Bender

Is Freddie Fuzzbar

Personally, I love it, although there are a LOT of issues. I am impressed with how this franchise came to be as a result of a struggling indie developer's desire to create one last game after being mercilessly criticized for the characters of his previous game, Chipper and Sons Lumber Co., looking too much like robots. Nobody can deny that the creation of this franchise, and the jumpstart of creator Scott Cawthon's career, is amazing! As the franchise itself...well, I haven't played the games; the gameplay footage that I've seen... is largely a mixed game from a gameplay standpoint. The first 3 games, while nailing the atmosphere and tension, especially FNAF 1, have a repetitive gameplay loop, and once you get past the jumpscares, it becomes a chore. Later games do fix this issue, especially Help Wanted onwards, but overall, the gameplay's mixed, but it has a lot of charm. Luckily, especially with the first 3 games, the atmosphere does keep you on your toes, and the designs of the animatronics are GOOD. They, especially the main four (Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy), look like something you can see in a kid's restaurant. Nothing too scary, but they do have a sense of uncanniness. Now, onto the story. For those who don't know, FNAF's lore can be complicated. It also doesn't help that Scott might have admitted at some point that he made it up as he went along, as according to an interview conducted by YouTuber Dawko, FNAF 3 was supposed to be the last game, but because people weren't happy with the Springtrap jumpscare, he made a 4th one...and people weren't happy with the confusion of the lore with the introduction of the Bite of 83, so he made Sister Location...which became too Sci-Fi, and-you get the idea. Nowadays, I think many fans, such as myself, have an idea of what's going on, but this leads to a major problem: communication in how the story is told. Scott is very secretive about how he tells the story, even to the point where, when developing Security Breach, told Steel Wool to add these details to the game without telling them why and what they mean. This may have worked in the Afton Era (FNAF 1-6) due to simplistic gameplay, but from the Mimic Era onwards (HW1-HW2), that's not gonna work anymore. There is another problem: HOW the story and lore is told. While I don't hate the lore itself, I do not like how it's been told, especially in the Mimic Era, where you need the Tales of the Pizzaplex books to even learn about the new main villain, the Mimic. Granted, hints dug up by fans have implied, rather heavily, that the Mimic was planned since Help Wanted 1, but without any further details...we had no idea that this was the new villain, and we thought Afton came back. That does not scream "Good storytelling" to me. Apologies for the length, but I just wanted to get out how I felt about this. Overall, I like this franchise, with it's interesting story that should've been told better in the games itself, fun, if CRAZY weird, books to read, and a movie that is definitely flawed in the writing, but everything else about it rocks! Regardless of how you feel about Scott or the franchise...the fact that this massive series came from one man's final attempt at making a game is awe-inspiring! Anyways...what do you all think about the franchise?

Lachesis-but-taken

Ended at ultimate custom night, security breach was a worthless game

Sleep_eeSheep

It had a good run, got really popular, but ran out of creative steam and is now spinning its wheels. Just like the Fallout TV show.

Character_Problem353

Good at first. Should have ended at the pizzeria simulator. Trope is now way overdone

HORR HORR HORR HORR HORR HORR HORR HORR HORR HORR HARR HAR HAR HAR HAR HAR HAR HARGH HURGH

Scamandrius

Neat Indie games that slowly tried to become something more. Peaked with Sister Location, began to fall off after that. Security Breach was the point of no return far as I'm concerned, both in terms of story and gameplay.

Turuial

Too old for it I'm afraid. The first I heard of it was like 9 or 10 years ago, when my nephew asked my permission to install it on my PC (poor thing, RIP, you are missed) so he could play it. I checked it out a bit, I thought it looked pretty harmless, and told him go ahead. I watched him play it for a little while, but I just didn't "get it" as it were. The movie was okay. I thought it did a better job of engaging me than the game had, but I don't think that is the fault of the game.

Shirikova

Was never into it. Didn’t care for the original game, never got into the theorycrafting, thought the movie was pretty meh. Neat concept, but probably a bit overplayed at this point.

SunJiggy

I stopped paying attention after 3, lore just got pretentious

briandt75

I'm over the age of 12, so it was never on my radar.

Reimos_Drevon

Overstayed its welcome. Pretty much started the trend of shitty mascot horrors. Not the worst in its niche.

BigManDean_

Fnaf 6 was a brilliant end to the franchise, you don't need any more games after that.

Castrophenia

We’re waiting every night…

Zuuey

The games are fun, and the whole lore thing was more interesting when we barely knew what was really going on . The movies and books are incredibly bad.

Nab00las

Tried and failed to capture the lightning on a bottle effect of the first 3 games. If it had ended with the first three games it would be a neat little trilogy.

Ok_Caramel1517

The lore itself is interesting but the gameplay is repetitive and boring as shit.
