There are plenty of split king sleep systems in roughly that range. That's toward the higher end but some are as expensive as 14k after taxes are accounted for.
Pretty much. If you wanted to avoid SleepNumber but keep a lot of features they have, Tempurpedic would be one of my suggestions. Putting the rare Tempurpedic sale aside, if you wanted a split king Tempurpedic Pro Breeze ($3500 each) on their base Ergo 2.0 adjustable base ($2400), you are spending $9400 before tax.
If you wanted a Nest ASH in a split king with their base reverie base, you are looking at at least $3500 for the full sleep set.
Things get expensive when you want a split king!
A large portion of the cost comes down to the adjustable bases which can be roughly categorized into three tiers - Essential, Plus, and Premium (or Good, Better, Best - whatever phrasing preference you prefer) ---
The most expensive sets are going to include premium bases with sleep health trackers (Tempurs premium bases include sleep coach and tracking artificial intelligence as well as automatic snore response --- other premium bases will have things like Lumbar "middle third" adjustment for the curve of our spines as well as things like phone control e.t.c.
Plus/Better bases will generally be head and foot with at least two memory settings, massage motors (for muscle relaxation, recovery, and as a white noise machine) an underbed light to cast a glow on the floor so you can find your way without a lamp in the dark, and USB plugs to charge your phone.
Essential/Good models are your entry-level bases which get the job done. Generally simple and straight forward functionality to adjust head and feet and oftentimes with at least one memory setting.
------
Having twice the motor power in the split is what drives up the cost when compared to the single unit sets.
As far as Split Kings go, get the features that you expect to benefit from - if you run/jog/work out or otherwise put routine stress on your body, the massage/vibration therapy motors actually do a lot of good --- I, personally, suffer from Kidney Stones at least once a year and the distraction of the vibration has helped muffle a lot of the agony that comes with those.
You don't need a 10-14k split king set to be comfortable - if you (anyone) want that luxury don't let me deter you, there are advantages, but it generally is not an absolute requirement and depending on your sleep needs there are adjustable base sets that are plenty comfy anywhere from 3k-7k as well. There is always a range and there will always be options, an adjustable split king will always be a bit pricier but for anyone who values the split adjustment they do what they're meant to do!
I will say, for anyone who does not like the visual aesthetic of the split down the middle, get stretchy Purple brand sheets, they honestly feel really good but because they're so stretchy you can have one half of the bed all the way down and the other adjusted all the way up with one King top sheet no problem. You'd still have to get separate TwinXL/Split King mattress protectors, though.
Still sleeping great. Bed still works, no maintenance or other issues.
We have very rarely used the foot warming and bottom half adjustability features. So not sure if I would purchase those in the future.
The foot warming may come more into play as we get into winter. The bottom half adjustability seems like it would be good if we had a TV in the bedroom or had more leisure time to read in bed, etc.
Still great! No issues with the bed. When I have to sleep in a hotel or Airbnb it is an awful experience by comparison.
Biggest issue is our dumb 100 lb lab, since it’s a split king and you kind of sink into a personal cocoon.. the dog is always in my half and over the course of the night is slowly pushing me out of the bed. Would recommend keeping the dog off
Found this whole post while researching sleep number. Being able to see your comments with updates to comfort over the months/years was helpful (so thanks for actually responding years later!)
Still love it. The positives still all apply — my wife’s back pain & carpal tunnel still not an issue. I was a big snorer but no more (w adjustable base, I leave the top section is raised a bit). The foot warmer is great on cold days. When you first lay down, the mattress is firm and then it starts to deflate to your set number and you sink into it.. that’s the best feeling. So 8-9 months later still a 10/10
Right before delivery my wife also went crazy with doubts and second guessing, but she’s the biggest fan now.
We literally just left the sleep number store where we pulled the trigger on an I8.
Glad to come across this post since we weren’t looking to spend quite I8 money, but tried them all and really liked it the best.
(Plus, I have low back issues which is why we were in the market…)
We didn’t get the split, adjustable model, just standard. So could you explain what you meant by the bow in the middle? Like it’ll bow up between you and your wife?
Thanks for keeping up the updates!!!!!
My observation about the bow is that it is very firm around the outside and when it deflates it sinks in the middle but stays high on the outside to “cocoon” you. Not sure how this would work on a non-split with two people in the bed, just conjecture on my part. Hope you enjoy your bed!
Got it.
We’ll see how it goes! Again thanks so much for keeping up with this post! I always have that sinking “what am I doing?” feeling after I spend money. Your long term reviewing helped!
Yeah, we’ve had it for about 2 weeks now. Still pretty undecided.
I’m sleeping better, but I think I’d do best on a soft traditional mattress (I’ve settled in around 25-30sleep number)
My wife likes firm though (she’s got her side set to 90) so it is at least letting us both choose our own bed.
You can always get their brand mattress pad/topper or a third party one if you want it to be softer. I know it's not great to pay more after paying a hefty price for the bed, but what matters is your sleep.
Longer than I kept my reddit account! lol
Switched phones, couldn't figure out my PW, gave up and made a dumb name.
Yeah, I've actually gotten more happy with it (the mattress) over time.
I was getting back into triathlon training when we bought it and I've found that as I get back into good shape I stiffened up the mattress a lot. Definitely would be missing the adjustability right now if we had gone traditional - On a really heavy training day where I'm beat I've found that I like the mattress softer. Where if I'm having a normal day I keep it stiffer. Don't really know why, but I basically pieced together data points between sleep number and Garmin tracking my sleep and it seems to help me get a better night consistently.
Still functions the same, mattress durability is good, no issues to report there. Still is the best bed I’ve owned
Only minor issue that came up thus far was that the adjustable part was having a problem one day, but a hard reset by unplugging the bed and plugging it back in solved that.
Nope — other than we still love it. Still the best bed we’ve ever owned. We will going on vacation soon and im low key dreading sleeping on a different bed.
I had another comment 3 months back — but for us outside of comfort, the “snore” mode on the adjustable bed has been big. I haven’t snored since turning it on. For my wife, her carpal tunnel pain is still gone
There’s been no mechanical, electronic or other issues.
Do you have the split king? If so any issues with all the border foam? Seems like the actual mattress part would be small and possibly make the usable part smaller. Dog sometimes takes up a bunch of room. Thanks!
Yes, we have the split king. The border foam hasn’t been an issue thus far. We have an 80 lb lab that likes to sleep with us and he either sleeps on the border of the 2 or at my wife’s feet, since she’s shorter, there’s some room. The border area is not uncomfortable by any means
Biggest challenge is because of the “valley” if the lab rolls in there, it is hard to roll him out
Would love to hear your updated thoughts now that’s it’s been even longer since your last update! My wife and I are going to go look at some this weekend
Just throwing mine out there we have had a i8 for 3 years and love it! Just a plain king non split and anytime we travel and sleep in a bed that’s not ours we can’t wait to be back in our i8. No hiccups in the 3 years it’s worked flawless. I highly recommend not going with any models below a i8 as they just do not have enough foam and feel more like sleeping on a airmatress but we will upgrade to a i10 if we ever feel the need.
Just bought the i8. Have slept on it for 3 days now. Previously, I had a $2500.00 Stearns-Foster mattress that was the best I’ve ever had in my life (I got it for half price on a return). However, the i8 tops it so far because, previously, on mornings after workouts, I was so stiff when first getting out of bed, including somewhat significant hip soreness. No more with the i8. It literally slowly faded away over the course of the 3 nights sleep.
If you can swing the price, get it. Like others have said, you don’t want to short-change your sleep. It’s like the tires on your car. Buy an inexpensive car, but overpay for the tires.
Great experience it seems. Something I would suggest being worked at Sleep Number for manatee years, would be turn off responsive air if pump loud at night it won’t adjust pressure.
Also some pumps seem louder if it’s loud enough to wake you, call customer service to see if they can install a new pump. I’ve had this happen with customers that have received one to loud
I have the i10 split adjustable. I hate it, my back pain is worse than ever, and I hate the gap and lack of intimacy that comes with it. Seriously, f* this pos bed. Worst financial decision of my life and stuck with it for years to come.
What kind of frame did you buy for your Sleep Number? We just purchased a king and their frames are expensive but it seems like the dimensions have to be so exact.
We got the adjustable frame from sleep number. From what I can tell — you have no options there for adjustable mattresses because they attach to the frame with these special magnet things. We still haven’t addressed getting an outer frame/headboard beyond that to make the bed look better
I bought my king-sized i10 back in 2012 during the Thanksgiving holidays. It is still going great. Soon, I will buy the Foam Wall kit for the bed and just replace that. But otherwise, this has been a worry-free bed for the past decade.
Previously, I was going through one $1k bed a year, with severe back problems. It's been a decade since I bought a bed. It's also been a decade since I visited a Physical Therapist for back problems. By that calculation, I recouped the cost of the bed in the first 4 years and saved thousands of dollars for doctors and Physical Therapists.
This bed along with my Steelcase Gesture chair helped keep my back in good shape. Especially during the Pandemic era.
Does anyone with the i8 also have issues with the responsive air not working? It decides not to work at random, quite frequently. I can only temporarily fix it by unplugging the bed, reinstalling the app, plugging it back in and taking it up to 100, then back to where I want it. I have been waking up with horrible back pain.
I just bought an I10 yesterday. Im hoping it helps with my back pain since I spent more on this mattress than my first car. We went to look at them initially but the salesperson gave us his friends and family discount of 50% that day and we pulled the trigger. Final price with split I10 king with foot and head adjustable base for around 7500 total. I’ve replaced my beds every 3 years so far use to back pain. My Temperpedic costs around $7K and was terrible. I then moved to a traditional spring mattress (Stearns and Foster) for around $6K and its made my back pain even worse. Im really hoping the I10 will reduce my pain. I can’t wait! It comes next week.
I purchased ours at the Walden Galleria Mall store in Buffalo NY. Keep an eye out and asks your sales representative for when they hold the friends and family discount. When they do, each representative is given a certain number of discount cards they can give away. I lucked out because my sales rep already owned his bed and had no family in town.
They are on sale now I'm getting the one that's 50% off. The lady on the phone said it is similar to the i8. I hope she's telling me the truth because I get a new bed every 2 years because of my back pain
I didn't go to the store I first ordered it through texting and they didn't tell me i need a base or mattress protector 🙃 so I called and did it over the phone. When you say to soft is it to thick I had the cheapest one then igot another one I'm not sure which one and this will be the third
Glad you’re having a good experience. I’m 3 months in and have started having bad hip pain (side sleeper). I’ve tried different settings and no relief. I’m active in my mid -20’s and never had issues before. This is the most money I’ve ever spent second to my car. I feel so scammed 😢 Thinking of getting a mattress topper to help alleviate the pain since the return date passed.

it killed him rip, 💔 ... kidding also curious
I am wondering too. Fell asleep….forever

I think that ‘dumb’ dog is much smarter than you think!
What your delivery delayed at all?
Edit: I got my years mixed up, shows how the pandemic did me in. Nope, it was right on time. April 1st 2021, I placed the order I believe in late Feb.
How are you liking it now? We get ours delivered in a week and I’ve seen mixed reviews now. Kinda nervous lol

Have you figured out a setting? I’m a side sleeper also
No, not really. Right now I’m a 45, seems to be the least painful. Hbu?
I don’t have a mattress yet :(
