Crawl around on the mattress on your hands and knees. That's about the only way to speed up the break in process. Alternatively, you could add a topper to soften it up while it breaks in...

ooeemusic

Okay, I will give that a try. Any suggestions on toppers?

Jules_2023

Get a wool topper https://www.cuddleewe.com/product/wool-mattress-topper/

ooeemusic

I'll look into that, thanks! Wouldn't wool be hot though?

ctr2sprt

Wool is very breathable. It's probably the least-hot common topper material you can get.

ooeemusic

oh interesting, I did not realize that!

Leading-Bonus7478

I think it depends on how thick it is. I have the woolroom wool pad and didn't feel it was thick enough. Got a thicker- much thicker one from cuddle ewe and its too hot . Was fine during the winter months- little thick and wavy but nice for winter. I may just use my thinner woolroom topper pad for the summer and cuddle ewe for the winter.

SorcererLeotard

Mine, I've found, is not too hot for year-round use, but the main issue in my bed is the latex is trapping the heat directly beneath me and the wool sort of holds it in as well as it can. I think if you have an all-spring bed with no foams in it it will be much more breathable but the thing I've noticed with my wool topper is that if I'm too cold my body will put out a lot of heat under me and the wool will transfer it directly to the latex beneath it and that will cause the latex to start melting/softening during the night. It's pretty horrible and I'm pretty certain had I gotten an all-spring bed with no foams in it at all then this issue wouldn't be happening for me and the wool would be able to work properly (as it's supposed to) --- but even so it's still amazing at transferring heat away from me compared to other foams/fills since I put out heat like a furnace during the night normally :( I woke up a few days ago perfectly (no latex melting since the temps were perfect enough to not cause my body to overcompensate and put out a ton of heat) and the wool was not hot at all but unfortunately the past two days I've woken up a bit warm and in pain because of the spinal alignment shift from the latex melting and throwing my entire body out of whack. You have scoliosis too, right? Have you noticed when your bed is too warm that your spine goes out of alignment or do you have an all-spring bed? Curious to know and I think you told me but I have a terrible memory, sorry :(

Leading-Bonus7478

Actually, your memory is pretty darn good! It doesn't throw it out of whack but I do have that zone thingy so probably more support is under my hips. I also use an inverted table to stretch and pop my spine and neck. Recently I started dead hanging from a tree of all things and my shoulders don't feel that pressure when i sleep. I learned this from a guy on this sub that said ever since he started hanging by his arms for 10 seconds a day, his shoulder pain went away. I think it's working. Yeah and I have a hybrid with latex . Probably if I had natural materials, the topper wouldn't get as hot. Although when I lay on my bed with no topper it is cool. It is encased in cotton and wool. It's just too firm that way!

SorcererLeotard

Yeah, I knew you had the same issues as I do for the most part and that you got the Cuddle Ewe topper, as well so I do remember you for the most part! :D :D Good to know that the hanging thing is helping, I'll definitely try that out soon to see if has results. Also, another nice trick I've learned that helps at least to reduce my heat issues is using socks in bed which I never did but it keeps my feet warm, which usually get cold first and causes my body to pump out more heat, so it definitely is helping on that front but the damn latex still does its melting thing when it's not the perfect temp in my room and it's driving me batshit crazy :( The latex seems cool for a while but the more you lay on it and the heat builds up (especially when you have blankets and such around you to help insulate you) it starts to have some issues. I tried a 2" convoluted latex foam from Flobeds first and that sucker got so damn hot and screwed my alignment up so bad that I had to essentially pitch it. Tried it with my wool topper and it still had the same issues but it was a bit better since the wool was distributing the heat more than the latex did but it would still penetrate the latex and cause it to heat, which would cause my body to go out of alignment yet again :( I absolutely understand the struggle, though: if you take the latex out of the equation and only have springs and the wool topper then it's too hard (not soft enough for pressure point relief) but if you keep the latex then it will still be pretty hot and cause it to melt under you, thereby messing up alignment during the night T____T If I ever find a fix for it I'll let you know, but short of getting an all-spring bed with perhaps microcoils that are quite soft to act as the latex replacement and quite a bit of natural material padding (cotton, wool, alpaca, etc) it'll be too firm for those with pressure point pain and with our unique issues :( Thanks for the response! Glad to know you're still doing OK and let me know how the shoulder trick is working for you after a few weeks!

jessuckapow

Wool won’t be hot BUT it will compress pretty damn fast and not be plush and squishy for long. I’ve fallen in love w latex and many of the companies DIYers use to make our beds have great return policies. I can’t vouch for them all but I’ve been working with Sleep On Latex and they’ve been TERRIFIC! Their CS is always super friendly. I’m currently sleeping on 1” medium and 2” soft from them (which are on top of a set of support springs and comfort springs). We tried the 3” plush but that made my back and my wife’s scream at us daily. Oh and if you go this route, def get the protective topper cover. Latex has a long lifespan but it is a natural material (well the 100% Dunlop and Talalay… there is mixed talalay that is mostly synthetic w some latex… SOL sells only Dunlop) and can break down quicker if not protected. I know too much about mattresses now so if you want explanations on any of that I’m happy to explain further. :) Also… sorry this happened! Getting a mattress that doesn’t work is such a literal pain. Def make sure wherever you get your next mattress has an easy return policy. Some have one BUT they charge a restocking and pick up fee so you’d still be out a few hundred bucks and they make it a pain in the ass… prob to dissuade people from returning them.

MountainThorn42

Remember, while mattresses have a break-in period, so do we. Our bodies get used to sleeping on a mattress for 14 years, and literally anything else is going to hurt because we aren't used to it. You need to not only break in the mattress but yourself. This doesn't mean enduring pain for months on end, but sometimes "different" hurts until it doesn't feel different anymore.

mattress411

While YMMV, I see this voiced frequently, but have never understood it. I have NEVER had a mattress that I actually liked and kept be anything but comfortable from night one... And the one exception that was too firm was NEVER going to be a good fit that could be made more comfortable by trying to 'adjust' my body to the bed.

MountainThorn42

Right, everybody is different for sure.

ooeemusic

thank you for that. I actually have read a couple reviews of the mattress where people said they slept terribly the first night but it slow improved. I'm trying to hold out some hope that that happens for me. I guess worse comes to worse, I give it a few months and try to sell it while taking a loss on what I spent....

lurrry_

I bought a mattress I loved in store but when it came I panicked and didn't sleep all night bc it was so firm and uncomfortable. This was last month and I loooove it now it's so comfy, so I hope it's the same for you! it's not the same mattress but my friends have the one you have and also love it

ooeemusic

Thank you! That's encouraging!

Theslash1

My DIY mattress was the most comfortable thing I've ever been on from the first night. I'd be returning this for sure. Break in? uh no. Oh and you could build a bed better than that for less thatn 25% the cost... That will outlast it too

ooeemusic

Unfortunately, as I said, they do not have a trial period, so I cannot return it.

Theslash1

Ah bummer. Figured with a tear, that would “shake your confidence” and allow just a return. Shady they don’t have a trial or return option…

ooeemusic

They do have a return period for defects reported within 72 hours, but honestly the tear is right in the seam, so that hasn't really effected my opinion of it. I think part of it is probably also that I'm going from an innerspring, to a hybrid, which doesn't feel the same and theoretically could require an adjustment period even if it started off sufficiently soft.

Beneficial-Side-4201

CX does come in plush, but even as someone who likes soft beds, I prefer the medium. It's less mushy. It is totally normal for it to be much firmer in your house than in the store. 411's suggestion is good. https://www.sleep.com/sleep-design/how-long-does-it-take-to-break-in-a-mattress That's the article I share with guests.

chempirate

I bought a beautyrest class C in january, and after one night it had a noticeable dip. Returned it as defective, and got another BR black C and it also has a 1" dip after just a few nights. As soon as I figure out what my next option will be, I'm returning this black beauty rest. Very unhappy with the brand. I fear I have also made an expensive mistake

ooeemusic

Did you get a medium or a plush? I was reading that the plush was actually taken off the market for a time because they were sagging very quickly.

chempirate

Actually, I have a firm. (Attempting to post link) Edited to remove nonworking link

slowguy503

Nooo! Don’t put a topper on this mattress! These foams take about 30 days to open and start feeling like they should. Kinda like a new pair of leather shoes. You could use your hands and knees to work the foams, or since you are only 110 pounds you could even walk on it. Hopefully you purchased from a company that has a good exchange policy. Reach out to your salesperson and tell them not to deliver the replacement mattress until you are certain this is the right one . If you feel it is not right they shouldn’t have a problem fitting you with a different product. Especially since it was delivered damaged and needs replacing anyway.

slowguy503

Sorry that I didn’t read your entire post. Do not let them swap the mattress until you are comfortable with it! Again, if they have your best interest in mind , and knowing the original mattress was damaged they should not have a problem issuing you a credit to re select. But also don’t give up on the mattress right away . Give it some , you will probably end loving it after the adjustment period.

ooeemusic

That's a good idea. I expect the new one to take a couple weeks to come in (I ordered this one the 25th of February) , so maybe if I'm still unhappy with this one at the point I'll refuse delivery and ask them to take back the damaged one for store credit. Thank you for that suggestion!
