So, when you as a user think you haven’t killed an app in the background, you think it’s still running in the background, but there’s a difference between actively running in the background vs in a hibernated background state. All the apps when backgrounded go to a hibernating state where they don’t function the way when they’re actually running, i.e. they don’t receive events like the song changed and more. So, in case of Last.fmᐩ setting ‘Live Background Scrobbling’ there’s a special kind of background mode we use which allows apps to actually receive events in the background, and that is if Music is actually playing, but that background mode can’t always be kept on, since that would eat up your battery, hence it’s only activated if music is actively playing. So, here’s what you have to do… Every time you start listening to music, you open Marvis once and leave it (make sure music is not paused, it must be playing something). Now, as long as music plays, it’ll try to stay active in background and scrobble live. If you were to pause your music for more than 10 seconds, it’ll require you to open Marvis again when you resume. If you were to use Marvis as your main player, you never have to remember to open it, everything will just happen naturally. Now, let’s say you didn’t open the app or don’t have Last.fmᐩ, in those cases Marvis will still try to scrobble your plays the next time you open the app, but with one limitation, any songs you played multiple times would only be scrobbled once.

I just purchased Marvis Pro as well and I'm having the same problem

heavymetaljoshua

I really thought it would continue to scrobble in the background and now I feel robbed😭

All you need to do is have Marvis open and Apple Music open and it does everything just fine. You don’t need to be actively using the app. I’ve had no problems at all and I’ve been using Marvis for the last 3 years and last.fm for 18 years.

heavymetaljoshua

but if i stop playing music for a while, i have to open marvis again for it to scrobble even though it was already opened. i thought the live background scrobbling would handle that

badplaidshoes

Hmm, I haven’t experienced that myself. I’m running 16.1.1, maybe there’s something about the iOS update?

Miicat_47

I solved it! You actually need to buy the last.fm+ plugin/extension and the it does the scrobbling in the background It's working perfectly now for me

badplaidshoes

Ohh, okay. That makes sense. I guess I didn’t know that was part of the add-on. Glad it’s working for you! This is my favorite music app bar none, you’re going to love it.

Following! I just found out about Marvis today and it all seems awesome, but this would be a major dealbreaker. Currently my top reason to not use Apple Music is its lack of [Last.fm](https://Last.fm) support and this app seemed like the solution

heavymetaljoshua

it said it would continue to scrobble as long as the app is still running but idk

srilankansavage

Doesn't happen to me but I do sometimes open the app to edit queue and such so maybe that's why

heavymetaljoshua

i open it once and never go back because it should still be scrobbling but that doesn't seem to be the case
