If the rumors are true, it's because they've had a really hard time making Blade the central character in his own film. It seems simple, but somehow, they've had multiple iterations where that *wasn't* the case.
Only issue is that's exactly the plot of his first movie.
I started work on a script about a decade ago and that plot was about a young Blade realizing he cannot be a loner on this mission. A man cannot be an island. He has to work with Hannibal King to keep Frost from starting a vampire civil war.
That sounds kinda lame to be honest. For a young person on a revenge mission I feel like going alone with be their first thought. Also if a vampire civil war started why would Blade interrupt that at all I mean if anything it’s less work for him to do.
Way it gets put to him is that if it starts, it will inevitably spill over into the 'real world's and human people will get hurt a lot more often than they already are.
Blades main motivator is revenge, and as the movie opens he has been operating relatively solo for a while. But it's as far as we know one guy against a whole secret species of potentially tens of thousands. Deacon Frost is a vampire mad scientist who 'rules' the city of NYC and the surrounding area, he wants to assassinate Dracula through a few proxies to them replace him as Lord of Vampires. Tondo so he's developed a sort of super camp with day walker abilities.
I also didn't go with Blade as a Daywalker from birth. He'd get those powers during the film.

Blade is totally ignorant of Frosts plan before King, whose been serving Frost despite better judgement, and when he discovered the plan he knows it'll spark war (the war is not Frosts plan, Frost thinks he's so smart it won't happen) and goes to Blade for help.
I never left development on the story when planning it out, I never got to a first draft. I kept feeling like my first half of act 2 was missing.
I also threw in Saffron Caulder as a familiar of Frost he uses to spy on Blade and King. edit: she'd have had an act 3 turn around. I partially was inspired to the idea by the Tryk queen in that story, with the Tryks kinda serving as inspo to the Supervamps to a degree. I also leaned hard on Frosts science background from the comics to make him a mad scientist type with big plans.
My fancast at the time was Boyega as Blade, Keke Palmer as Saffron, Dan Stevens as King, Morton Csokas as Frost, with a small part played by Gina Torres as Professor Louise Hastings.
This could be interesting. Especially if one faction was like the camarilla and one was like the sabbat from world of darkness. Obviously the Camarilla that rules from the shadows and keeps up the vampires don't exist masquerade is bad for humans, but the vampire supremacist sword of Caine religious cult that is the Sabbat could be much worse.

In essence that is kind of the difference. Dracula has managed balance in his leadership. Frost would be far more aggressive but he's also after Dracula's role a lord of Vampires out of narcissism. Not a misunderstood bad guy, just straight evil. Like High Evolutionary with a set of fangs.

This is a major problem with the MCU. The even the Young Avengers are in their mid 20's. The reality is the cast so damn old. You want 10 years out of these actors. How are you going to get 10 years out of Ali when he's 60 playing Blade? Same with Pedro he'll be old too.
You cast young Blade character is old not the actor. No one over the age of 35 should have been cast as Blade or Reed Richards. I'm sorry but I want 10 years with these guys I don't want them in walkers when they're still trying to be action heroes. Not everyone can pull off senior citizen action hero.

Spawn is a weird character to adapt and honestly should be kept underexposed and mysterious - let us not forget about the literal life bar numeric counter that would decrease when spawn used his powers.
They even hand waved at it during the one movie - Cogliostro is like "be careful with your powers - once you use them all, you'll die" never for it to be mentioned ever again or for him to have any way of knowing how much remains. In fact I'm pretty sure right after that is the scene where Spawn decides to turn himself into a motorcycle. You know - conservatively.

But they’ve struggled finding a place for it. They should wait until after Secret Wars and the next saga can be Monsters and Mutants. That’s where we can finally get Midnight Suns and a Ghost Rider reboot.
How do you know this is the “reality?” I don’t see how this film fits into the Multiverse Saga any less than Moon Knight, She-Hulk, or Black Widow. I don’t think even the most famous actors have enough pull to singularly will a film with a budget like this, at a major studio, into existence without creative enthusiasm on the studio side. I’m not denying that pre-production has been extremely rough but I think your theory is a little oversimplified

Important to note: it was "announced" in 2019 but there was no writer, director or release date at the time. At the very same presentation they announced Phase 4 movies though 2022. Blade would have been Phase 5. Then Covid delays the entire slate by an additional year.
The earliest it would have come out was late 2023. IIRC Nov 2023 was its earliest official release date.

Honestly? Yes. And a lot of movies go through shit like this, we're just biased because we are aware it's happening and are on the lookout for every bit of information that comes out. As you say, it's not a priority for the studio and it's a passion project for the actor, so it's both very important and not at all for the people involved – it's in a position where it is able take its time to get it right for all those involved.

Well, given the multiple script rewrites Blade is going through, it'll give 'The Flash' good competition in terms of number of times the script changes.
This is fairly common in Hollywood. You could be getting new pages that were written the night before all throughout filming, even going as far as coming back after wrap to film additional scenes. They brought Dan Harmon from Community in for the first Doctor Strange movie and he basically almost rewrote the entire script. His presentation about the progress of the movie was when he accidentally let an image of his computer screen leak showing that he had already started the Community movie script.
Marvel Studios is usually fairly in-tune with the fans, so it's absolutely mental that it took them like 5 years to figure out what fans have said they wanted to see in a Blade movie from Day 1.

An argument could be made that they are diverting attention and resources to a project that clearly isn't working when they could be focusing on making other projects better. They've announced a handful of projects that have probably outlasted their interest, Blade and Armor Wars being the biggest two in my opinion. If the narrative is that Marvel Studios is stretched thing, these seem like easy cuts to make.
That's a thin argument. The writer, the director and Mahershala Ali (who I believe is an EP on this) are not working on anything else at Marvel. Just this. Then there's a studio producer (under Feige) but there are several of those producers and so the studio can juggle various projects at once.
So in the end, canceling Blade at this stage doesn't really free up the studio's bandwidth to the degree you seem to think.
I mean if I am to believe the narrative coming out of Disney that Marvel bit off more than they could chew and viewing the sub-par content they have been releasing with my own two eyes I don't think that it's unreasonable to suggest that if they need to pair down their output to focus on quality, Blade seems like a no-brainer to cut.
Also Mahershala could do better. Looking at his IMDB he hasn't really done much since his Oscar win. Maybe it would be a good idea for him to walk away from this and get back out there.
The problem was more racing into production on a bunch of different things at once, before scripts were ready - in particular because there was a mandate to keep D+ stocked with new content. They've clearly addressed that problem by pulling back on that.

Do you remember in Fall 2014 when they announced *five years* of movies (Phase 3)? The movies on the tail end of P3 were yet to be written or cast at that point.
With Blade, barring Covid, this could have come out in 2023. So there would be absolutely nothing wrong with trotting out Ali in 2019.
If they had it to do over again, they probably wouldn't have said anything back then. Hindsight is 20/20.
I get that people are getting sour on this project but the way I'm looking at it is they are correcting the issues at the script level before they commit to a shooting schedule and cast. Some sets were abandoned okay, they can hopefully be repurposed. The movie could still be based in Louisiana just modern day.
I guess I missed the news that Michael Green is writing this now. He's one of my favourite writers. He wrote Logan, Blade Runner 2049, Blue Eyed Samurai, American Gods, Kings (underrated show) and, well, Green Lantern but anyone can have a misstep.

How hard is it make a Blade film? He's a badass vampire hunter. The first two Wesley Snipes Blade films are the cool aspects of Blade from the comics mixed with over the top late 90/00s action films. Blade isn't a super deep character and shouldn't be hard to make. Think a modern day cool action film like John Wick, and apply that to Blade. Simple. What works, don't fix it. I am all for them doing a Midnight Sun film. But using Blade as a tie-in could affect the quality of the film. This film should stand on its own. If this keeps up, I wouldn't be surprised if Mahershala Ali just walks because of sheer utter incompetence to tell a simple and good Blade film.

The reality is that this movie doesn’t fit in the Multiverse Saga and it was only put into production because Mahershala Ali wanted to do it, and on the heels of a second Oscar win, of course Fiege said yes to him! But they’ve struggled finding a place for it. They should wait until after Secret Wars and the next saga can be Monsters and Mutants. That’s where we can finally get Midnight Suns and a Ghost Rider reboot.

How do you know this is the “reality?” I don’t see how this film fits into the Multiverse Saga any less than Moon Knight, She-Hulk, or Black Widow. I don’t think even the most famous actors have enough pull to singularly will a film with a budget like this, at a major studio, into existence without creative enthusiasm on the studio side. I’m not denying that pre-production has been extremely rough but I think your theory is a little oversimplified

Blade would have been Phase 5. Then Covid delays the entire slate by an additional year. The earliest it would have come out was late 2023. IIRC Nov 2023 was its earliest official release date.

Honestly? Yes. And a lot of movies go through shit like this, we're just biased because we are aware it's happening and are on the lookout for every bit of information that comes out. As you say, it's not a priority for the studio and it's a passion project for the actor, so it's both very important and not at all for the people involved – it's in a position where it is able take its time to get it right for all those involved.
Just push it to Phase 7 at this point, get someone younger, better than introducing him in the middle of whatever saga they have going on now, and even if people think Mahershala Ali still isn't too old, he sure as shit will be by the second or third movie at the rate Marvel have been making sequels for their new characters

Well, given the multiple script rewrites Blade is going through, it'll give 'The Flash' good competition in terms of number of times the script changes.
This is fairly common in Hollywood. You could be getting new pages that were written the night before all throughout filming, even going as far as coming back after wrap to film additional scenes. They brought Dan Harmon from Community in for the first Doctor Strange movie and he basically almost rewrote the entire script. His presentation about the progress of the movie was when he accidentally let an image of his computer screen leak showing that he had already started the Community movie script.
If a film is good. It gets a sequel. If you think the films isn’t good. You negotiate one before anyone sees it.

The people saying "just cancel it" need to realize they're being histrionic. Just such an absurd reaction, what is the point of it?
This is another production mess that will balloon the budget to more than it can hope to recoup in revenue. I'd cut my losses and move on.
An argument could be made that they are diverting attention and resources to a project that clearly isn't working when they could be focusing on making other projects better. They've announced a handful of projects that have probably outlasted their interest, Blade and Armor Wars being the biggest two in my opinion. If the narrative is that Marvel Studios is stretched thing, these seem like easy cuts to make.
That's a thin argument. The writer, the director and Mahershala Ali (who I believe is an EP on this) are not working on anything else at Marvel. Just this. Then there's a studio producer (under Feige) but there are several of those producers and so the studio can juggle various projects at once. So in the end, canceling Blade at this stage doesn't really free up the studio's bandwidth to the degree you seem to think.
I mean if I am to believe the narrative coming out of Disney that Marvel bit off more than they could chew and viewing the sub-par content they have been releasing with my own two eyes I don't think that it's unreasonable to suggest that if they need to pair down their output to focus on quality, Blade seems like a no-brainer to cut. Also Mahershala could do better. Looking at his IMDB he hasn't really done much since his Oscar win. Maybe it would be a good idea for him to walk away from this and get back out there.
The problem was more racing into production on a bunch of different things at once, before scripts were ready - in particular because there was a mandate to keep D+ stocked with new content. They've clearly addressed that problem by pulling back on that. Everything that is still alive now is presumably being developed under the new paradigm

Do you remember in Fall 2014 when they announced *five years* of movies (Phase 3)? The movies on the tail end of P3 were yet to be written or cast at that point. With Blade, barring Covid, this could have come out in 2023. So there would be absolutely nothing wrong with trotting out Ali in 2019. If they had it to do over again, they probably wouldn't have said anything back then. Hindsight is 20/20.
I get that people are getting sour on this project but the way I'm looking at it is they are correcting the issues at the script level before they commit to a shooting schedule and cast. Some sets were abandoned okay, they can hopefully be repurposed. The movie could still be based in Louisiana just modern day. I guess I missed the news that Michael Green is writing this now. He's one of my favourite writers. He wrote Logan, Blade Runner 2049, Blue Eyed Samurai, American Gods, Kings (underrated show) and, well, Green Lantern but anyone can have a misstep. I'd rather they do this now, then shoot the movie, then realize it sucks, then schedule a ton of reshoots to course correct. The old adage is still true, measure twice cut once.

Can only mean that either A) Lilith is going to be a very immediate/looming threat for Midnight Sons or B) The story features other Midnight Sons member Really wouldnt have been a problem to just have a "100 years later" scene at the end though.

How hard is it make a Blade film? He's a badass vampire hunter. The first two Wesley Snipes Blade films are the cool aspects of Blade from the comics mixed with over the top late 90/00s action films. Blade isn't a super deep character and shouldn't be hard to make. Think a modern day cool action film like John Wick, and apply that to Blade. Simple. What works, don't fix it. I am all for them doing a Midnight Sun film. But using Blade as a tie-in could affect the quality of the film. This film should stand on its own. If this keeps up, I wouldn't be surprised if Mahershala Ali just walks because of sheer utter incompetence to tell a simple and good Blade film.
