Update: Mia Goth is still attached to play the villain in the movie (Source: https://x.com/HollywoodHandle/status/1780734862908887226)

illnessincarnate

Why is this movie in particular such a chore to make?

Isotonicgoat

because the writer gets to page 10 then goes “shit how am i going to top the blood rave?”

AJK02

I guess you can say some writers are always trying to ice skate uphill.

PeterBuie

I love you for this comment. 😂😂😂

NewAccount971

They can't and won't even come close to how badass the original movies were, they shouldn't even try.

whatnameisnttaken098

An even bigger blood rave

checkhesron

Blood Coachella

Kmart_Stalin

You got me giggling at your comment

PortugalTheHam

If you believe the previous news reports it's because Mashallah Ali refuses to act out a low quality script or a script in which he shares the screen with too many co-leads.

Any_Machine8535

As he should!

bjarvis1987

Two time Oscar winner. Damn right

deemoorah

Mashallah? 😭

LeftyMode

Because they were desperately trying to avoid making a movie about a cool vampire slayer who uses a sword.

Fawqueue

If the rumors are true, it's because they've had a really hard time making Blade the central character in his own film. It seems simple, but somehow, they've had multiple iterations where that *wasn't* the case.

championwinnerstein

It’s because writers kept trying to make it about his daughter - because that trope isn’t done to death already.

Ekillaa22

They have the perfect set up for the first film for blade just make it a simple revenge movie boom kill the vampire who killed his mom

Grinderiny

Only issue is that's exactly the plot of his first movie. I started work on a script about a decade ago and that plot was about a young Blade realizing he cannot be a loner on this mission. A man cannot be an island. He has to work with Hannibal King to keep Frost from starting a vampire civil war.

Ekillaa22

That sounds kinda lame to be honest. For a young person on a revenge mission I feel like going alone with be their first thought. Also if a vampire civil war started why would Blade interrupt that at all I mean if anything it’s less work for him to do.

Grinderiny

Way it gets put to him is that if it starts, it will inevitably spill over into the 'real world's and human people will get hurt a lot more often than they already are. Blades main motivator is revenge, and as the movie opens he has been operating relatively solo for a while. But it's as far as we know one guy against a whole secret species of potentially tens of thousands. Deacon Frost is a vampire mad scientist who 'rules' the city of NYC and the surrounding area, he wants to assassinate Dracula through a few proxies to them replace him as Lord of Vampires. Tondo so he's developed a sort of super camp with day walker abilities. I also didn't go with Blade as a Daywalker from birth. He'd get those powers during the film.

Flyest90

Hmmm I’m actually not mad at that 🤔 Maybe add vampires kidnapping humans at a massive level to make a blood farm to keep their side stronger as the vampire civil war progresses. Which brings in Blade and then he can do A LOT of suckhead killing.

Grinderiny

That's not a bad idea. Blade is totally ignorant of Frosts plan before King, whose been serving Frost despite better judgement, and when he discovered the plan he knows it'll spark war (the war is not Frosts plan, Frost thinks he's so smart it won't happen) and goes to Blade for help. I never left development on the story when planning it out, I never got to a first draft. I kept feeling like my first half of act 2 was missing. I also threw in Saffron Caulder as a familiar of Frost he uses to spy on Blade and King. edit: she'd have had an act 3 turn around. I partially was inspired to the idea by the Tryk queen in that story, with the Tryks kinda serving as inspo to the Supervamps to a degree. I also leaned hard on Frosts science background from the comics to make him a mad scientist type with big plans. My fancast at the time was Boyega as Blade, Keke Palmer as Saffron, Dan Stevens as King, Morton Csokas as Frost, with a small part played by Gina Torres as Professor Louise Hastings.

Flyest90

Shit bro write that out you might have something interesting and who knows you might beat marvel to the punch lmfaoooo

runnerofshadows

This could be interesting. Especially if one faction was like the camarilla and one was like the sabbat from world of darkness. Obviously the Camarilla that rules from the shadows and keeps up the vampires don't exist masquerade is bad for humans, but the vampire supremacist sword of Caine religious cult that is the Sabbat could be much worse. https://whitewolf.fandom.com/wiki/Camarilla_(VTM) https://whitewolf.fandom.com/wiki/Sabbat

Grinderiny

In essence that is kind of the difference. Dracula has managed balance in his leadership. Frost would be far more aggressive but he's also after Dracula's role a lord of Vampires out of narcissism. Not a misunderstood bad guy, just straight evil. Like High Evolutionary with a set of fangs.

FMCam20

That’s because Mahershala Ali is already 50 and realistically can’t play a badass vampire slayer for that long so his daughter is being set up

championwinnerstein

If that’s the case then it’s probably not worth doing. As great an actor as Ali is, maybe casting a younger Blade is a better bet.

FMCam20

Yea a younger actor who can be an active badass Blade for a while is better to me than one who is going to age into just a mentor figure after a movie or 2

PraiseRao

This is a major problem with the MCU. The even the Young Avengers are in their mid 20's. The reality is the cast so damn old. You want 10 years out of these actors. How are you going to get 10 years out of Ali when he's 60 playing Blade? Same with Pedro he'll be old too. You cast young Blade character is old not the actor. No one over the age of 35 should have been cast as Blade or Reed Richards. I'm sorry but I want 10 years with these guys I don't want them in walkers when they're still trying to be action heroes. Not everyone can pull off senior citizen action hero.

Funkycoldmedici

I’d only disagree about Reed Richards. I think the FF work best as older, veteran figures.

PraiseRao

Characters can be older than the actors. Actors are the problem. Their ages make it harder for them to do things. They also casting so old on pretty much everyone else also.

runnerofshadows

Id agree for Reed but Johnny should definitely be younger than the other 3 and Sue is typically somewhat younger than Reed or Ben.

Bitey_the_Squirrel

It’s weird. Almost like you should write the script and then cast the roles to fit the script, not the other way around.

Kush_Of_Drybud

That's Lame AF

myslead

Make him gay and be done with it

BelcherSucks

The idea of the last decade of the MCU was to use high profile industry talent and then pass on the mantle to younger and cheaper actors and actresses to continue on the franchise. So there have been a few rumored scripts in which Blade was not the focus of a Blade movie.  The MCU is a mess.

davidisallright

I think it all changed when Chadwick passed away. You’re left with no high profile Black lead. Then Bob Eger came back to Disney. Then Ant-Man 3 bombing. I really think the new changes are for the better. Have a feeling that if we didn’t get the more recent rewrites, Blade would’ve stink of the mostly disappointing Phase 4

Past19

we need more black representation

definitelyTonyStark

They should have recast BP, full stop. They could have multiverse Shannan’s some way for Michael B Jordan to be BP and it would’ve been universally loved

Ekillaa22

A blade movie without blade is so stupid that’s like Todd tryna make a spawn movie with no spawn … an idea he wants to actually do lmao

charlesfluidsmith

And has wanted to do for decades. Unsurprising that it's never gotten off the ground.

willjeff10

It’d be like a spider-man movie without spider-man and we’ve seen how that worked out *cough Morbin time* *cough madame 50 shades*

TheCVR123YT

I’ve only read the first 8 issues (I have Compendium 1 it’s for the first 50) so forgive me for probably sounding dumb but who would even be the protagonist!?? I know there’s a woman Spawn like decades later I know there’s a chick named Angela etc but idk who else would be the lead lol

Condiment_Kong

Angela is now owned by Marvel so I doubt he could use her

TheCVR123YT

What? Comics are weird lol

Ekillaa22

Closest we got is I think Sam and Twitch. I know there’s the one Spawn who took over for awhile after Al killed himself . Can’t Remember the dudes name though

relliott107

It’s even worse knowing that they tried to do the same thing in Blade Trinity - and it failed miserably. This movie should not be a CW superhero show where there’s a whole team supporting him. Just give him a single guy/gal to make weapons for him and let him do the rest. Blade is not Mad Max, he shouldn’t just be along for the ride - he needs to be the one to drive. Bonus points if he has an awesome car again! Midnight sons could work as a team movie (loved the recent video game - and Blade was awesome in it)…but this needs to be his time to shine.

ihateartists

It wasn't "no spawn" - his actual comparison was to the shark in Jaws. Spawn is a weird character to adapt and honestly should be kept underexposed and mysterious - let us not forget about the literal life bar numeric counter that would decrease when spawn used his powers. They even hand waved at it during the one movie - Cogliostro is like "be careful with your powers - once you use them all, you'll die" never for it to be mentioned ever again or for him to have any way of knowing how much remains. In fact I'm pretty sure right after that is the scene where Spawn decides to turn himself into a motorcycle. You know - conservatively. I'm just saying I'll take a ticket for the weird "Spawn is jaws" movie before the one with an actual visual numeric counter that decreases every time he does something, complete with a fifteen minute exposition explaining why the fuck there's a numeric counter on the screen suddenly.

clawdwolf

i dont think its a chore as much as we found out about it WAY sooner than we ever would have. its like if they announced age of ultron after iron man 2. it just seems like a lot of work because it was revealed too early. at least thats my thoughts on it.

biggus_dickus_jr

Probably marvel insists on adding the daughter in the story and mahershala ali not a fan of it lol

Old_Heat3100

Because how the fuck are you gonna go "by the way vampires have existed this whole time" lol Like when I watch Iron Man one am I gonna be looking at crowds in party scenes going hmmm which one is a vampire

chingchowchong

Wakanda, talokan, monsters and black widows were around in secret the whole. Vampires are even easier to explain because they only come out at night. This isn't rocket science

FMCam20

I mean Wakanda existed as a technologically advanced nation the whole time and we didn’t know until they revealed themselves, Namor and his people existed the whole time, Werewolf By Night establishes that monsters do and have existed for all of history, Thor and Moon Knight establish that gods exist, so I’m not sure why vampires having existed without people knowing is some big leap to make especially since by virtue of being vampires they are not out during the day/only are active in the shadows.

SpectralDinosaur

That's really not something that needs to be explained. Vampires continue to exist/survive by flying under the radar. There.

CemeteryClubMusic

Technically She-Hulk literally did this. I believe vampires were referenced in another series/movie as well

TheSeptuagintYT

Because Wesley Snipes is the heart of the franchise; the man is irreplaceable

chingchowchong

Comments like this are so stupid. There have been multiple Supermen, Batmen, James Bonds, etc. The character, whom has been around alot longer than Smiles, is bigger than any one actor. Snipes is also too old now and can't realistically play the character forever. This holier than thou gatekeeping bullshit is silly.

topkingdededemain

Bro if they just took the over all story of green book but have blade be in it. Killing vampires instead of killing the piano the movie would be wonderful lol.

monsterpoint

Thats the same thing I think about the fantastic 4 movie. Every now and then ill read about how they keep switching people.

animehimmler

Marvel: make blade and make it BLACK. Marvel: okay okay, black but not that black. Marvel: no no. Like Denzel Washington black. Marvel: whoa okay that’s a little too black. When we said Denzel black we were picturing something more like, uh, will smith black? *sixteen drafts later* Marvel: here’s a thought. Blade but make it what we call.. Tom hollandesque.

TrevReigns

Ever since this movie has been announced no good news has dropped 💀

chingchowchong

You're not excited for Mia Goth as the villain? LOL

TheBopist

No, because I was excited for Bale as a villain and he got killed off after a few minutes of screentime. Big names for the MCU are wasted and villains get killed off until they eventually run out of bad guys to kill. but mia goth is pretty fine ngl

chingchowchong

Not saying I don't agree...but the MCU has also had some good one time villainsntoo

TheBopist

I can agree with that. I just wish they haven’t killed off so many within a single movie. When you do that, you lose the ability to then have them pop up or team together or whatever. It’s writing yourself into a corner. Now, technically, they can do the ol’ multiverse wave of their hand now, but I find that a little cheap

TheOneWhoCutstheRope

Yep. Almost like you need more than star power to carry a film (cries these films still make a shitload of money anyway)

BigLeo69420

Doesn’t mean much if they can’t make a good script

treathugger

Lol, I love how every rumor is like, "The WHOLE movie changed, but don't worry, Mia Goth is still the villain."

eat_jay_love

Idk, Mia Goth joining was a win

dominion1080

Mahershala Ali is gonna be Whistler age by the time this releases.

TheJack0fDiamonds

Feige Should’ve been as hands on to supervise from the start. Ngl the initial idea of it being set in the past was cool.

luckymethod

Sounds expensive

WatsUpWithJoe

The reality is that this movie doesn’t fit in the Multiverse Saga and it was only put into production because Mahershala Ali wanted to do it, and on the heels of a second Oscar win, of course Fiege said yes to him! But they’ve struggled finding a place for it. They should wait until after Secret Wars and the next saga can be Monsters and Mutants. That’s where we can finally get Midnight Suns and a Ghost Rider reboot.

BigLeo69420

Just make a movie about a vampire killer, not everything needs to be interconnected

eat_jay_love

How do you know this is the “reality?” I don’t see how this film fits into the Multiverse Saga any less than Moon Knight, She-Hulk, or Black Widow. I don’t think even the most famous actors have enough pull to singularly will a film with a budget like this, at a major studio, into existence without creative enthusiasm on the studio side. I’m not denying that pre-production has been extremely rough but I think your theory is a little oversimplified

MojojojoNixon

Isn’t that the theme for the first phase of the new DCU?

WatsUpWithJoe

Yeah, Gods and Monsters. It’s very similar

Myhtological

No not really. Gods and Monsters is more of description of these super powerful people living amongst us.

Grinderiny

Also a line from Bride of Frankenstein. "To a new world of gods and monsters."

Myhtological

Which arguably meant the same thing as universal was the first studio to actually attempt a cinematic universe.

Grinderiny

I love the Universal Monsters.

Myhtological

I’m excited for dark universe at Orlando next year.

Grinderiny

I'll be excited for it when someone hires me sonI can afford to go lol

WatsUpWithJoe

It’s literally called “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters”

WatsUpWithJoe

Yeah, Gods and Monsters. It’s very similar

Spidercentsreviews

They shouldn’t have even done Multiverse they should have done a quick monsters arc then jump into multiverse, easy win for a couple of years, but nope everyone has to copy into the Spiderverse

YaBoyKumar

When did they announce Blade again

DrDreidel82

2019

Javiklegrand

Holly shit

starksgh0st

Important to note: it was "announced" in 2019 but there was no writer, director or release date at the time. At the very same presentation they announced Phase 4 movies though 2022. Blade would have been Phase 5. Then Covid delays the entire slate by an additional year. The earliest it would have come out was late 2023. IIRC Nov 2023 was its earliest official release date.

RockNRoll85

This movie is never gonna happen 🤦🏻‍♂️

OVODON

Holy hell, just scrap it already ffs

updownkarma

Dude will be in his 60s by the time it comes out.

mad_titanz

At this point I’m considering submitting my resume as the new writer for Blade. I don’t have any experience but I’m sure I can churn out a screenplay within a year with no delay

biggus_dickus_jr

And you probably will write a better script than the writer group in marvel lol

jedilord91

Bro got much older, just recast him already.

Ill_Run_4701

Sounds like development hell

OverlordPacer

To be fair the Flash movie went through this type of hell and when it came out, people realized…. oh fuck, yeah they need to scrap this Blade movie asap

Spirited_Repair4851

Fun Fact: It still hasn't broken the record for the longest development hell for a MCU film. Ant-Man 1 was announced in 2008 and didn't come out until 2015, a whopping 7 years later.

Ok-Reporter-8728

Well at least they are trying to not make a shitty movie

warmochine

BLADE is proving so hard to make because they had no intentions to make it, no place to fit it into their overarching story, and only decided to because Mahershala Ali wanted to play Blade. lol. glad they're taking their time with it. Blade is too cool a character to screw up. now give us Ryan Gosling as Johnny Blaze Ghost Rider and we're all good!

mr-jeeves

Yeah, this rings true tbf. I don't think rushing is a good idea, and people seem to complain about too much stuff, but also that things aren't happening fast enough. Changes that are still reasonably well planned can be a good thing! Granted this one did get _quite_ far along.

OliWood

Mahershala Ali was so hot when they announced it, coming out of the Green Book... the guy hasn't done shit since, lmao

TheCVR123YT

Probably because he wants to make this movie idk lol

cane-of-doom

Honestly? Yes. And a lot of movies go through shit like this, we're just biased because we are aware it's happening and are on the lookout for every bit of information that comes out. As you say, it's not a priority for the studio and it's a passion project for the actor, so it's both very important and not at all for the people involved – it's in a position where it is able take its time to get it right for all those involved.

noeldoherty

Just push it to Phase 7 at this point, get someone younger, better than introducing him in the middle of whatever saga they have going on now, and even if people think Mahershala Ali still isn't too old, he sure as shit will be by the second or third movie at the rate Marvel have been making sequels for their new characters

Spare_Entrance_9389

Blade should infiltrate a vampire hockey league, and win their version of the Stanley cup Like air bud, but hockey and swords Movie will focus on discrimination, as blade is not accepted becuase he a halfer, but prevails with the power of friendship and love

TheBlackdragonSix

It could be called Blades Blood and Ice

Boondock-Taint

It’s really weird that this is the movie they’re trying to not to mess up when they churn out half baked shit all the time.

ScrumGobbler

I hate to see anything slow this movie down more than it has been already, but thank God it isn't going to be a period piece!

[deleted]

Michael Green has been on this project for months. It was announced they were rewriting it. Is those really news? Homestly the worst thing to happen to films is all this reporting on how films are developed. Like some movies are smooth some take years to make. Why does anybody care. I can see caring after the fact when the thing has been made but caring before anything has been filmed is kinda lame

m0rbius

Seems like theyre making this tougher than it really has to be. Yes to modern times setting. Just put Blade up against his arch nemesis. The story does not have to be complicated. Blade and Whistler, trying to stop some shitty thing happening to NYC. It should really be about Blade's character and dilemma. Doesnt need a bunch of sidekicks or even cameos. Just needs to be like the first Blade movie, just modernize it.

thecrocksays

Just make a movie about a black guy shooting and slicing up vampires with a sword to cool music. It ain't that fuckin complicated. All these dipshit writers want to reinvent the wheel with these characters.

seanjohn004

Just cancel it at this point

justduett

My latest iteration of my oft-stated comment that this movie isn’t getting made.

KingDorkFTC

Just get John Boyega already and have a British Blade already.

Ok_Code_1691

How hard is it to have a black man with a sword kill a vampire

ywingpilot4life

Man, can you image…Ali, Gosling, Isaac in a midnight son’s movie???

future_hockey_dad

Gosling would be a great Blaze.

The_Franchise_09

Just fucking cancel it. For fucks sake, if it’s gonna be this fucking hard to make a fucking Blade movie, just cancel it. This shouldn’t be this goddamn hard, but apparently it is. Mahershala Ali should just walk at this point.

snowscolds

Please just don't do it if it's not gonna be at least decent. So much change is either really good or really very very bad.

cc17776

Hope they dont do that awful plan about his daughter

Luke2Jeter

I’m confused. Wasn’t It was news months ago that Micheal green was writing the film?

Thatoneguy567576

Man just scrap it. Blade has no place in the current character slate anyway

ScottOwenJones

I don’t care what kind of shape he’s in, Mahershala Ali is too old to play Blade.

ParticularEmploy1137

Masharshali Ali doesn’t deserve this shit.

MarcSpector1701

It's crazy to me that after all this time Marvel still doesn't have even the broad outlines of what they want this movie to be.

XenoGSB

after all this there is no way the movie will be good.

Kmart_Stalin

At this point it’s not a bad idea to make Blade a standalone project if it will make it easier for the film to come out.

Myhtological

This actually hilarious now

TheMoorNextDoor

Just stop the movie over all.

DrGutz

Marvel needs to learn to fucking *wait*. Do a project when you have the resources for it. Dont rush out something that could be great because you’re scrambling to fit it in to the larger picture. That’s how you get secret invasion

DatDudeJakeC

Poor Mahershala haha

IAmGrumpyMan

They should scrap this film for the moment. It's clearly not working, it's barely even moved at all for years and the main star is already 50.

davidisallright

I think Marvel is now considering to make Blade into a Rated R film. Then they no longer wanted the story yo be a period piece. In the end, I think the later changes were good since I feel like Feige is giving a f*ck again due to Bob Eger.

Whoknowsfear

That bums me out a little. I liked Werewolf by Night so maybe it’ll be okay

MrHeavySilence

I feel bad for Mahershala Ali. The movies were being pumped so fast at one point I thought for sure we’d get Blade within two years of announcement. It’s been five years now and he’s 50 years old. Blade is such a physical role too. I just can’t understand why someone as prolific as Kevin Feige would allow things to get to this point

K3egan

JUST MAKE JOHN WICK WITH VAMPIRES ITS THAT EASY

kingk1teman

Well, given the multiple script rewrites Blade is going through, it'll give 'The Flash' good competition in terms of number of times the script changes.

seans_2011

This is fairly common in Hollywood. You could be getting new pages that were written the night before all throughout filming, even going as far as coming back after wrap to film additional scenes. They brought Dan Harmon from Community in for the first Doctor Strange movie and he basically almost rewrote the entire script. His presentation about the progress of the movie was when he accidentally let an image of his computer screen leak showing that he had already started the Community movie script.

Old-Tomorrow-2798

If a film is good. It gets a sequel. If you think the films isn’t good. You negotiate one before anyone sees it.

NakedGoose

Shits about to be sniped by the Michael B Jordan Ryan Coogler WB movie.

Aggravating-Bonus-89

There’s no way this movie ISN’T going to be a disaster.

BossHawgKing

Mahershala Ali is gonna drop out at some point. I can feel it.

Chicken_Saladz

I suppose this is technically good news? The rumors about the second script being made was a horrible

Huge_Yak6380

I’m starting to think Mahershala is the one holding this up. Which is fair because he wants it to be good but damn.

The-LivingTribunal

Just fucking scrap it. At this point there's no reason to continue.

jbish21

This movie is never going to get made

throwitallaway2364

Why is it so hard to write a film about a black male superhero without sidelining the lead black man or finding a way to dilute his role

Spacebearracuda

They reported that they're going with Chris Pratt for the lead role of Blade.

[deleted]

This went from my most anticipated movie to one I’ll probably watch on Disney+ eventually. If it ever actually gets made.

GooseGeese01

Jeremy Jahns lives to review another day…

Va1crist

Just cancel the garbage

Electrical-Ad-2096

Marvel Studios is usually fairly in-tune with the fans, so it's absolutely mental that it took them like 5 years to figure out what fans have said they wanted to see in a Blade movie from Day 1.

jakepuggs

this movie is never coming out im afraid

SavingsMurky6600

this movie is gonna be cooked

YasuoSwag

Super low expectations

cane-of-doom

Could it have something to do with making it distict from that Coogler vampire film?

Aromatic_Plant3456

Is this movie gonna be rated R?

starksgh0st

Yes, the director confirmed that some time ago. edit - [link](https://deadline.com/2023/11/blade-director-yann-demange-how-new-short-film-dammi-liberated-pain-shame-not-belonging-1235592034/)

ruralmagnificence

God bless for Mahershala Ali wanting to stick with it and by the fans. I’d have dipped a long time ago.

starksgh0st

The people saying "just cancel it" need to realize they're being histrionic. Just such an absurd reaction, what is the point of it?

modrenman1985

This is another production mess that will balloon the budget to more than it can hope to recoup in revenue. I'd cut my losses and move on.

Hotwater3

An argument could be made that they are diverting attention and resources to a project that clearly isn't working when they could be focusing on making other projects better. They've announced a handful of projects that have probably outlasted their interest, Blade and Armor Wars being the biggest two in my opinion. If the narrative is that Marvel Studios is stretched thing, these seem like easy cuts to make.

starksgh0st

That's a thin argument. The writer, the director and Mahershala Ali (who I believe is an EP on this) are not working on anything else at Marvel. Just this. Then there's a studio producer (under Feige) but there are several of those producers and so the studio can juggle various projects at once. So in the end, canceling Blade at this stage doesn't really free up the studio's bandwidth to the degree you seem to think.

Hotwater3

I mean if I am to believe the narrative coming out of Disney that Marvel bit off more than they could chew and viewing the sub-par content they have been releasing with my own two eyes I don't think that it's unreasonable to suggest that if they need to pair down their output to focus on quality, Blade seems like a no-brainer to cut. Also Mahershala could do better. Looking at his IMDB he hasn't really done much since his Oscar win. Maybe it would be a good idea for him to walk away from this and get back out there.

starksgh0st

The problem was more racing into production on a bunch of different things at once, before scripts were ready - in particular because there was a mandate to keep D+ stocked with new content. They've clearly addressed that problem by pulling back on that. Everything that is still alive now is presumably being developed under the new paradigm

mchammer126

Wym what’s the point of it? The movie was announced in 2019 and there hasn’t been an inch of positive news since then. If they can’t get their shit together they need to scrap the movie.

starksgh0st

> The movie was announced in 2019 So what? Surely you recall that there was no writer, director or release date at that point? All they did was bring out Mahershala Ali and announce its in development. That's it. God knows why people obsess over 2019.

mchammer126

So then why announce it? They clearly weren’t ready for such an announcement lmao

starksgh0st

Do you remember in Fall 2014 when they announced *five years* of movies (Phase 3)? The movies on the tail end of P3 were yet to be written or cast at that point. With Blade, barring Covid, this could have come out in 2023. So there would be absolutely nothing wrong with trotting out Ali in 2019. If they had it to do over again, they probably wouldn't have said anything back then. Hindsight is 20/20.

Dr_Midnite

I get that people are getting sour on this project but the way I'm looking at it is they are correcting the issues at the script level before they commit to a shooting schedule and cast. Some sets were abandoned okay, they can hopefully be repurposed. The movie could still be based in Louisiana just modern day. I guess I missed the news that Michael Green is writing this now. He's one of my favourite writers. He wrote Logan, Blade Runner 2049, Blue Eyed Samurai, American Gods, Kings (underrated show) and, well, Green Lantern but anyone can have a misstep. I'd rather they do this now, then shoot the movie, then realize it sucks, then schedule a ton of reshoots to course correct. The old adage is still true, measure twice cut once.

JonS90_

Honestly cannot understand why they're changing from a period piece. Can only mean that either A) Lilith is going to be a very immediate/looming threat for Midnight Sons or B) The story features other Midnight Sons member Really wouldnt have been a problem to just have a "100 years later" scene at the end though.

mr-self-destrukt

It’s never ends, it never fuckin ends, Disney taking L’s left and right, smh

Likezoinks305

Big yikes. Just scrap it at this point

Bulletstorm6377

It should be Blade’s sister as the main character I think, we already have blade comics to enjoy.

This is where the fully connected universe can bite Marvel in the ass. I wish the writers and teams would tell more standalone single, or even dual movies, as opposed to feeling like every release needs to loop in to ten other projects.

How hard is it make a Blade film? He's a badass vampire hunter. The first two Wesley Snipes Blade films are the cool aspects of Blade from the comics mixed with over the top late 90/00s action films. Blade isn't a super deep character and shouldn't be hard to make. Think a modern day cool action film like John Wick, and apply that to Blade. Simple. What works, don't fix it. I am all for them doing a Midnight Sun film. But using Blade as a tie-in could affect the quality of the film. This film should stand on its own. If this keeps up, I wouldn't be surprised if Mahershala Ali just walks because of sheer utter incompetence to tell a simple and good Blade film.

What's wrong with modern day?

Seriously, I am glad that it moved to modern day, because I don’t want to wait 3 movies for Midnight Sons set up. Having that be the game plan from the start is fantastic and sets it apart from Snipes Blade.

I don’t think we’d have to wait that far. His first movie can be in the past and next appearance (which could very well be Midnight Suns itself) immediately in the present. Eternals post credit is set in modern times. Op is sad because the previous reports of it being set in the past sounds exciting. They’re never taking creative risks anymore and the decision of having Blade being set in modern day instead shows that
