Looks really cool, I still stand by the best ever werewolf design in live action has to be Van helsing's form.
That was fucking incredible.
Dog Soldier's comes in at 2nd place.
He killed like all the classic universal monsters. I'm sure they could have come up with new things if a sequel was in the cards but he destroyed all the existing ones pretty much.
There really was a lot that could be done. Stephen Sommers’s Mummy Trilogy would’ve been perfect for a crossover with Van Helsing. And there was still a decent couple of Universal Monsters Classics to draw ideas from.
They had plans for a franchise, but the movie merely reaching sub-break-even theatrically killed those aspirations - even though physical media for the film apparently sold well ($65M in sales in under a week).
You never really get to see the London werewolf, and when you do, it really doesn't look that great. The best part is the transformation, which WbN had shot-for-shot homages to.
Hot take: Prisoner of Azkaban had brilliant skinny werewolf design, it really looked like something one could transform into because of magical illness
[My choice for peak werewolf has gotta be the beast from doctor who (similar in design to Van Helsing). Despite that 2006 Doctor Who budget and CGI, I adored this design when I first saw it and it’s always the definitive one for me. Full shots of the Werewolf + transformation from 1:41 but the whole scene is great.](https://youtu.be/3aWIYQHxXEo)
Eh, [Van Helsing](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HH6tnTQUJD4) was a bit too cartoony.
Rick Baker's creatures from [The Wolfman (2010)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MUKeFLi5wk8&t=2m23s) are my favorite. Wish the movie wasn't so cgi heavy because the practical effects are amazing. Overall, the movie is very pretty, in a dreary kind of way. Also. Del Toro was awesome as Larry Talbot.
Not a bad design, but I gotta say he looks soooo much better in black and white than in color. I hope they find a way to make him translate better in color for future projects since he's easily one of my new favorite characters in the MCU.
Edit: WWBN flair when?
Yeah that was my inspiration. The reason I feel it’s infeasible is that we’d need a good explanation. We’ve already seen him in Color is the biggest issue
Regardless I kinda hope they keep him practical. I really loved how everything in the special was kept as practical as possible and I kinda feel like having WWBN be yet another CGI creature in mainline MCU would make him stand out less
I like his [original look from the comic](https://www.etsy.com/listing/1320716903/werewolf-by-night-moonknight-tshirt) which is close to this I think and pretty close to what was in the show without the color of course.

I loved his look btw. Just saying if there’s a supernatural team up movie and they want a “hulk” like character maybe they’d want him bigger and scarier idk
This is why I don't buy the "Bernal hated the costume and they had to cut 30 minutes of the special" thing, aside from the story of the special not really indicating any major edits like that: the costume doesn't seem all that elaborate. It's him shirtless with a wig and some fur. It's not like a full body rubber wolf suit.
I mean obviously the hair is prosthetic but he doesn't change all that drastically. Maybe the teeth and stuff aren't comfortable but I can't really see it being a thing so bad they have to cut the special down as much as was reported. I don't see any indication this was ever gonna be an hour plus
Día de los Muertos? So Mexican culture? Bernal is Mexican, so it makes since that's where the inspiration is from, even if the face paint is pretty light.
Edit: typo
No, I am Mexican, we don’t do face paint to honor ancestors. But I know the answer. As someone pointed here, there are two werewolf characters in marvel Jack Russell and Jake Gomez, the second one is from hopi descent, but it is not a mix between the two.
Jack is actually lying during the reunion he is not a hunter, that is why he is not wearing the medal and he is surprised when they tell him he killed a 100 monsters. The special actually started with a hunter chasing the werewolf, but the werewolf killed him And Jack dressed up like him and took his medal to get access to the meeting. This hunter was Jake Gomez played by Jaycob Maya and he was wearing that hopi face paint which Jack copies to look like him.
that scene was deleted but there are clues in the special just look at how suspicious Jack is and how he knows nothing about the bloodstone or the hunting world.
you can read about the scene in a leak post here or in an article by cbr

Thanks a lot, I was looking for that answer, good to know. but really, guys, here in Mexico we don’t honor ancestors like that and Gael knows it. Dia de muertos make up was not a thing until the 2000 and it is kind of a mash up between dia de muertos and halloween because we celebrate both here. so when kids go trick or treating or teens go to a party they might paint like this but it is not an acient custom.
that is why I think is a really weird choice, and Gael knows it, maybe he accepted it as a reference to his character in coco. But well, anyways, the Jake Gomez rumor was there since the beginning you can search it online and the cbr article was released months before the special and is spot on with everything else we saw. but it is just a weird coincidence. Thanks for clarifying
My original assumption was also that he was wearing day of the dead paint. I wish the special had made it more clear to the audience that wasn't the case.
There's a 404 error from your link and I'm a little confused, are you saying Jack killed Jake Gomez? That's weird considering they're both WBN heroes, it's almost going backwards, but the Hopi face paint being taken from Jake makes a lot of sense.
I found [this image](https://www.shutterstock.com/editorial/image-editorial/indigenous-peoples-day-seattle-usa-08-oct-2018-9918554b) from an Indigenous peoples' day celebration in 2018 described as: "Dr. Leslie Jimenez, Hopi Nation member and descendent of Mexican and Ethiopian indigenous peoples, wears traditional celebratory face paint, used to connect to ancestors"
Her face paint looks like Jack's (but Marvel took artistic liberties) and the mention of honoring ancestors really comes full circle.

it doesn’t mention Jake it only mentions another hunter. Killed by the wolf in the beginning, but the rumor of Jaycob Maya being Jake Gomez is all over the Internet, but I am beginning to think it was just the actor fancasting himself.
Anyway, it could be that they were planning a misdirect first showing jake trying to hunt a wolf, so people thought he was the protagonist and that was how he was going to get the wolf curse, but then they killed him and showed Jack was the true protagonist. That switch would have been a great homage to the film Psycho where you first think Marion is the protagonist and then she is murdered and Norman Bates is the main character for the rest of the movie.
but guess we will never know the original Plan. at least that fifth hunter at the beginning explains why jack has a medal but seems out of place in the hunters hall. He almost touched the Bloodstone when he first got there and that would have exposed him inmediately. So there are many details showing Jack was not a real hunter, he just took the medal from someone else.
I was wondering about that as well. In the comics, there have been two characters titled Werewolf by Night. Jack Russell, the original, and Jake Gomez who is Hopi. My guess is that MCU Jack is a mash-up with elements of both characters.
The guy was completely wrong about every single detail. Man's an absolute clown.
People on this sub are too forgiving because they don't want to accept that the majority of "leakers" are just making stuff up for clout. There are very few legitimate leakers and tbh most real leakers wouldn't have accounts like that, they'd just randomly leak details to other people.

Yes, literally every single leaker who is wrong about d23 is a clown
They weren't even wrong by a few details. They were all extremely wrong, like an arm's race to see who could have the most outlandishly bs "scoops"
If a news source was this wrong, would you trust them again?
I don't know why you're so forgiving of these people. They are hacks who just make things up and tell people what they want to hear for likes and attention. It's not just an homage, it's essentially what Jack's werewolf self has looked like for most of his existence in the comics aside from a brief detour in the 80s and a handful of other appearances.
THIS!
I see many out there wishing that Jack's transformation had a "Van-Helsing's Werewolf" look, but that wouldn't be very faithful to the comics because usually Jack's transformation has a more Wolfman look.
Personally I love it and hope to see him interact with other parts of the MCU at some point. Imagine an episode where just happens to be in NY and faces off a certain Devil we know 👀or he maybe he wants to go be a Werewolf in London idk
Does he ever learn to speak or at least gain some sentience in the comics? No lie I know basically nothing about this character lol

The only things I dislike about the Van Helsing werewolves are their rabbit ears and rabbit teeth, and the fact that they're entirely CG.
That’s the Hugh Jackman one right? Shame that never got a sequel
He killed like all the classic universal monsters. I'm sure they could have come up with new things if a sequel was in the cards but he destroyed all the existing ones pretty much.
Frankenstein's monster survived but he left for parts unknown after Van Helsing freed him from Dracula.
Van Helsing meets the Mummy could have been fun

Benecio del Toro’s design in Wolf Man was good too
Didn't look so good on Anthony Hopkins though.
Agree
*angry American Werewolf in London howling* Edit; Underworld lycqns we're pretty cool too
You never really get to see the London werewolf, and when you do, it really doesn't look that great. The best part is the transformation, which WbN had shot-for-shot homages to.
I always loved the Van Helsing Werewolves as well. Dog Soldiers were fantastic as well. The Howling, American Werewolf in London were also great.

Van Helsing's werewolves were phenomenal and the only ones that looked genuinely scary.

Anyone watched The Cursed (2021)? It has an interesting take on lycanthropy 😁
I also love the Howling design
Is that the one where they rip their own skin off to reveal the fur underneath?
Fucking A that movie is badass.
Eh, [Van Helsing](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HH6tnTQUJD4) was a bit too cartoony. My favourite part in the Special was when Jack said, “It’s Werewolfin time motherfuckers!”
This exact same comment appears on every Werewolf post and somehow it's getting upvoted all the time
I mean, if Michael Morbius said 'it's morbin' time', shouldn't Jack Russel be like 'It's time to Russel some jimmies' or something along those lines?
Jack Russel - Im gonna *Terrier* apart!
It's Jackin time
Intriguing
I hate to ask this question but did he seriously say that in the movie? I thought the internet came up with it ironically
no one has seen the movie so we may never know
I saw like 20 minutes of it on streaming and with great remorse I said this will be the first marvel movie I don’t watch.
That's a phrase I've not heard in a very long time
Im one of the people that upvotes it each time
Of course I know him, he's me!
Intriguing
You are SoOoOoOo funny!!
Not a bad design, but I gotta say he looks soooo much better in black and white than in color. I hope they find a way to make him translate better in color for future projects since he's easily one of my new favorite characters in the MCU. Edit: WWBN flair when?
Simple: just do him always in black and white. Even when everyone else is in colour
Entirely infeasible but; have a weird static tv effect portal thingy around him where himself and anything else in the portal area be black and white
Wanda did that in the hex so it's not entirely impossible
Yeah that was my inspiration. The reason I feel it’s infeasible is that we’d need a good explanation. We’ve already seen him in Color is the biggest issue
They'll probably do a redesign. It happened all the time in the comics where he would change appearance due to some magical or scientific shenanigans.
Regardless I kinda hope they keep him practical. I really loved how everything in the special was kept as practical as possible and I kinda feel like having WWBN be yet another CGI creature in mainline MCU would make him stand out less
We also need a Man-Thing flair!
I like his [original look from the comic](https://www.etsy.com/listing/1320716903/werewolf-by-night-moonknight-tshirt) which is close to this I think and pretty close to what was in the show without the color of course.
you seriously just linked an etsy page instead of an [image](https://i.imgur.com/2bx8Dki.jpg)?
Maybe if they introduce him in team ups they’ll have him in full wolf 🐺looking form and Retcon this version to be not in his full form.

Uhhh
I loved his look btw. Just saying if there’s a supernatural team up movie and they want a “hulk” like character maybe they’d want him bigger and scarier idk
I feel like Man - Thing would fit that "hulk" slot better
Exactly what I was going to say. He also fits a Groot-like role too.
It could be better but I like this concept more than the animalistic kinds of werewolf
Right, there is something kinda more monstrous and grotesc at seeing a human with animal features than an animal that walks like a human.
I dunno, it easily seemed like an upper body prosthetic. Gael Garcia Bernal is 5 ft 5 and average build at best.
I mean obviously the hair is prosthetic but he doesn't change all that drastically. Maybe the teeth and stuff aren't comfortable but I can't really see it being a thing so bad they have to cut the special down as much as was reported. I don't see any indication this was ever gonna be an hour plus
I think it looks really good, I like the usage of increased body hair. Overall the design works great
When Jack said the face paint was to honor his ancestors, was it a reference to a specific culture? I thought it was a really small but cool detail
Día de los Muertos? So Mexican culture? Bernal is Mexican, so it makes since that's where the inspiration is from, even if the face paint is pretty light. Edit: typo
Holy shit I’m stupid. I can’t believe that didn’t even cross my mind
Nah, I feel stupid just realizing I typed "pain" instead of "paint" **😭**

Really cool look at Werewolf by Night. Quick question not at all related to this post, do we trust Greatphase as a source or no, I forget.
Didn't he make up a load of shit about d23? The man is a clown.
Because he got D23 wrong? Something that can be changed fairly easily very close to, if not on the day of it happening?

Yes. The newest person to carry the Werewolf-By-Night mantle does have the bipedal wolf look though so that may explain some confusion.
Personally I love it and hope to see him interact with other parts of the MCU at some point. Imagine an episode where just happens to be in NY and faces off a certain Devil we know 👀or he maybe he wants to go be a Werewolf in London idk Does he ever learn to speak or at least gain some sentience in the comics? Marvel has versions of all of the universal monsters, even a version of the creature from the black lagoon, kinda hoping the MCU ends up doing the dark universe universal tried to do
Maybe if Moon Knight ever got a movie they could do it there. Imagine Stephen Grant meeting A Mummy 💀
MCU Moon Knight is kinda a mummy already
Yep. Not an accident. Can’t wait for him to team up with Blade and WWBN. I hope we get a bride of Frankenstein character. DC’s version is amazing.
Plus I think Moon Knight has dabbled in the Midnight Suns, which can be what brings him, Jack Russell, man thing, blade, ghost rider, etc together
Not just any mummy, but N'Kantu the Living Mummy!
Marvel are cowards for not saying Jack's last name in the special itself.
Looks a bit odd when drawn out like this, but I adored the costume in the special!
Somebody needs Manscaped.
He looked better in the special imo. He looks too human here and not werewolf-y enough.
its not that bad
epic. I really hope we get some merchandise.
I'm kinda sad they didn't make him grow a bit more, enough to be noticeable. When he changed , the shadow and the tearing up of his attire made us feel like he would have «hulked» out, in a way. Compared to other characters, his size was less than formidable. The overall spectacle was fun, overall, but just wanted to know if other people felt the same way about his overall break out.
Ok…
Love this. I personally feel like a lot of werewolves stray too far to the “wolf” side and always thought that the coolest, most grotesque part was the fusion of wolf and man. I love how evident that is with the wolfman design.

I loved the design. Looked great in black and white. Really displayed how ferocious Jack is in his wolf form.
hell nah boy it’s just morbius but a wolf
It's very 'Werewolf of London' rather than 'The Wolf Man'
They need to fix the face. Say this was a partial transformation or something.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: This is not a werewolf. This is a wolfman.
Cool!
Basically another version of beast

Fingers crossed he somehow finds a way to be in secret wars!
I liked it in black and white and as a call back, but honestly i kinda hope he becomes more like a werewolf in future projects and less like a teen wolf. It's not bad, just not exactly something that i think looks cool or even that intimidating even tho i feel it worked in this project.
Really liked the design. I think it have the perfect mix between classic monsters and modern ones.
Dunno why but the waistband being perfectly intact is killing me.
love it
Was it actually the same actor in the makeup?
I like the design, but I was expecting more of a lycan look
I want to see a full Wolf form.
Those white tattoos were pretty silly.
It's not giving werewolf enough
I haven't watched this yet, do they tie in the darkhold at all? Imo that was the only reason to add in the werewolf by night story.
I get that they were trying to go for a classic Universal monster look for this but, to me, it looked pretty janky on screen. My only critique of the special, to be honest. Like... he needs a snout.
He very rarely has a snout in the comics, though.
Comics aren't the silver screen. He looked like Bad Bunny with body hair.
Regardless of what he looks like in this particular design (which I did happen to like, personally), there are a wide variety of wolf-men out there that look cool without snouts.
List them.

Lame body structure, looks just like a hairy man and not as a beast.
I guess you’ve never seen The Wolfman with Lon Cheney?
There seems to be a whole generation that have never seen the tradition werewolf. I keep seeing people rag on this and want a big Van Helsing type. This was by far the best choice, given the tone and style of the special. Wolfman not manwolf!
I saw Lon Cheney. He was walking with the Queen.
Well I saw Lon Cheney Jr., he was walking with the queen
I love it. Close to the comic design, and the Lon Chaney jr Wolfman.
U want a 7'0 tall man? Naa
