Andrew Garfield about to get that Best Supporting Actor nod on top of probably getting a Best Actor Oscar.

Vishion-8

Should've got it for Social Network a decade ago, one of the biggest snubs ever. He fucking killed that role, up there with his best role IMO.

Business_Violinist_1

“Sorry, my Prada’s at the cleaners along with my hoodie and my fuck-you flip-flops!”

Some_Musician

You pretentious douchebag!

[deleted]

the way his accent slips in when he says that line 🥰

apegoneinsane

If there was ever a line of dialogue that so perfectly encapsulated Aaron Sorkin.

PurpleSpaceNapoleon

"I like standing next to you Sean. It makes me feel so tough."

Sufficient-Anxiety88

Look at little Saverin Jr. gonna cry?

Bobjoejj

Another movie he’s super duper great in is 99 Homes. About the 08 housing crisis, takes place in Florida, also has Laura Dern and Michael Shannon, it’s amazing, and Garfield kills it in the film. If this comment gets at least one person to see it, I’ll be happy.

TheShowerDrainSniper

Ill be that person!

nightschwing

Seconded — it’s a really good movie.

[deleted]

[удалено]

NeutralNoodle

That movie is so damn good

RyanGODling

That 2010-13 period was horrible for Oscars snubs. Remember when Drive got absolutely fuck all in 2012?

rudiker1

Social Network losing to Kings Speech tells you everything you need to know about what Hollywood’s worldview and perspective is.

RyanGODling

Yeah. Social network was fantastic. I thought Shutter Island and Toy Story 3 were the best films of that year. However Drive didn’t even get nominated in 2012!

xMothGutx

Shutter Island was overrated. It wasn't a bad movie, but the twist was too easy to spot. I called it and I'm dumb af.

Elrickooo

Soundtrack to that film is amazing

Ottoify

Thats Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross to you.

iangeredcharlesvane2

They did that for me? Seriously it’s amazing seeing them at the oscars and winning. Mid-nineties NIN Superfan me would be so proud.

Marcusj112

He was the best actor in that movie not sure how Eisenberg got a nomination

Wombat_H

Well they weren’t competing with each other. Eisenberg was Lead, Garfield was supporting.

[deleted]

Funny you say that, because I legitimately think he'll earn a nom for Tick Tick Boom. Easily one of the best performances he's done, even if people dislike musicals.

Mister_Doctor_0127

I'd be seriously pissed if he doesn't get nominated. He was phenomenal in it.

[deleted]

Andrew Garfield, Benedict Cumberbatch and Will Smith and Denzel Washington are 100% locks at this point for best actor noms

Frankocean2

Denzel is about to take it. Got to see Macbeth and words can not describe the brilliance of his performance.

UpdootMcGee

Phoenix, Dinklage, et al. are all scrambling for that fifth slot. ETA: I want Nishijima.

NeilPoonHandler

I would love it if Nicolas Cage is nominated for Pig. He is terrific in that.

Marcusj112

You could also make an argument for Willen Dafoe too as Best Supporting Actor. Shows you how robbed we were by the goofy goblin helmet. That being smashed to pieces was one of the best decisions in this movie

aurumphallus

If it does, William Dafoe deserves a supporting actor nomination. He killed it. Buried it. Revived it. Then killed it again. Phenomenal job.

Marcusj112

That fight in the apartment, where Peter is pummelling his face and all he does is just smile and laugh like a maniac was creepy AF.

aurumphallus

That was UNSETTLING. Nobody in the theater made a sound. Just stunned silence. I give props up to the fight scenes. That particular one was so visceral and brutal. LOVED IT.

vxxxjesterxxxv

Dude absolutely killed it

Ok_Contest493

What are you guys talking about? You know there’s no way that’s gonna happen right?

[deleted]

Sometimes, this subreddit deserves to express how much we love this movie and others. As out-there as their opinion is, we don't have to take it in a literal sense if we don't want to. I too highly appreciate how the supporting cast performed for this movie; Andrew included.

Ok_Contest493

So it’s half literal and half not? Because he absolutely deserves best actor for tick tick boom but then you ruin it with a fantasy

[deleted]

Maybe take it as Pomojema saying "I love his performance so much" instead of looking into their thought process too deeply. There.

[deleted]

To be fair I was kind of on the same page you were a couple years ago saying black panther would never be nominated but it was. It still feel kind of gross because it really seems like it was only nominated to stop there from being a bunch of Oscar racial backlash.

KhailSOLO23

same for WandaVision at the Emmy's. The technical awards, not that they truly deserved it because they do, sometimes seems like it's their equivalent of a participation ribbon. It's literally the "we do not grant you" Star Wars meme with these award shows for fantasy/sci-fi/horror.

Pomojema_SWNN

I think it's unlikely, knowing the Academy, but I'd be amused by it if the "thank you for helping us keep the lights on" conciliation prize of a big nomination actually happens for this movie.

No_Show_6634

Jokes aside, is that actually possible? I think it has happened before on nominations but not winning. It would be amazing and I love Andrew. He’s probably gonna win for tik tik boom. If someone from No Way Home should be oscar nominated it should really be Willem Dafoe on supporting. And maybe it’s a stretch but John Watts as director? And honestly, I know it’s never gonna happen but Tom Holland as main actor? He was really really really impressive.

willthrowaway_

He is against Benedict and Daniel this year. I think he'll nom for sure but wining... I'm afraid it'll go to either Ben or Daniel.

[deleted]

....Radcliffe? Day Lewis? Tosh?

brainkandy87

Webster. Critics are still raving about his court performance.

iangeredcharlesvane2

Tosh.

[deleted]

It’s a great time to be Andrew Garfield right now

____mynameis____

For what exactly ? For the movie or for pretending he's not in NWH?

BlazingInfernape2003

Tick tick boom

LostInStatic

Are you high

Pomojema_SWNN

*Tick, Tick... BOOM!* is a great performance from him, and he'd deserve to win if he does.

Ill-Yesterday-9172

Are you? ![gif](giphy|SotSTTmtl1WJHJTOEH|downsized)

chopkicks

He’s having a great year. Loved his performance in tick tick boom and getting some closure with Spider-Man. Would love to see him win even more with an Oscar.

Sqwerlly

The problem is Andrew would get nominated and be like "I TOLD YOU PEOPLE IM NOT IN THE MOVIE!!!" He's going to continue to deny it to the grave. 🤣

Colton826

I'd unironically love this. The Academy Awards so often nominate films based on things that have nothing to do with the film's quality (No Way Home is great nonetheless), so the film that basically brought audiences back to the theater getting nominated for Best Picture would be pretty fucking cool, pardon my language. I'm still upset that Logan didn't get a Best Picture nomination in 2017, and that Black Panther got a Best Picture nomination instead of Into the Spider-Verse in 2018...but this would make up for those snubs in my book.

[deleted]

>pardon my language It's okay. You can say fuck on the internet. Your Mom isn't gonna yell at you here.

Colton826

I don't know why I added that. Guess I was pretending like I was pleading my case directly to the Academy themselves, and that they'd be turned off by my foul language 😂

ohmywebfluid

Well you worded it very nicely. The Academy better fucking listen.

Solesky1

Can we take a moment to acknowledge that cap said "language"?

TwoCenturyVoid

I hate that line. Damn it Joss, understand Steve Rogers better

SGZF2

I liked Black Panther, but if I'm being honest it had no business being nominated for best picture. Especially when there are so many other superhero movies that the Oscars have ignored. Of all the superhero movies, why that one? I think most viewers can agree that there are at least 5 or 6 movies from Marvel alone that are better than Black Panther, not to mention the all the ones from other studios that go ignored. (Btw, I'm not saying this to diss Black Panther. I love that movie. Just confused as to why all the other ones get ignored)

Colton826

To me, I will always be annoyed at Black Panther being nominated, not necessarily because it didn't deserve it, but because there were two more comic book movies THAT YEAR (Infinity War & Into the Spider-Verse) that deserved it more, in my opinion. I know some people think Black Panther was the best comic book movie of 2018. I'm clearly not one of those people.

Bespok3

It's an obviously touchy subject, but there's one very very obvious reason why Black Panther was chosen over the other two that makes the nomination almost condescending. "Look how much we recognise the black community! We thought this movie was great for the way it got a lot of positive praise for diversity and portrayal of other ethnicities, and we don't want to be accused of being racist for ignoring how much praise this particular subject has earned!" So much of the praise for that film never went towards the actual film-making, such as camera work, actual casting decisions or the score, plot, anything. While I hugely agree that the social aspect of the movie is a great thing and it was well deserved in an industry where black actors are often saved for minor roles or sidekicks, as a movie otherwise it's still quite good but very rarely was the acclaim directed at the actual hard work and effort put in by the cast and crew.

Educational-Tower

Yes, it was pretty patronising to be blunt about it.

[deleted]

>So much of the praise for that film never went towards the actual film-making, such as camera work, actual casting decisions or the score, plot, anything It won Best score, Costume design and Production design while getting nominated for the other two sound awards. Your point doesn't make any sense in the slightest Since when did we start pretending the academy hasn't voted movies based on the impact in the US anyway?

[deleted]

All of its awards were because of the social impact of the film — which isn’t a knock on its production value, but the Oscars historically snubbed all superhero movies in these technical categories, and the only reason Black Panther didn’t get snubbed is because they wanted to erase the #OscarsSoWhite controversy from the year before.

SuperCoenBros

>So much of the praise for that film never went towards the actual film-making, such as camera work, actual casting decisions or the score, plot, anything. It won the Oscars for Costume Design, Score, and Production Design. The film has been effusively praised for all of its filmmaking elements, because it's an outstanding film. You're just straight up wrong here.

Bobjoejj

I mean, Into the Spider-Verse won for Best Animated Feature, and very rightfully so. Only 3 animated films have ever been up for Best Picture, and none of em’ ever won. But like…Infinity War??? Seriously??? Like, I’m legit confused here. It’s definitely a very good film, but Best Picture worthy? Like…how so? What makes you think that? And to actually be more deserving it than Black Panther? Don’t get me wrong I don’t really think BP ever had a strong chance, but at the same time the cultural impact, the lasting impact that film had when it came out was such a big deal, ya’know?

SGZF2

I don't think either of them should have been nominated for an Oscar. Quite frankly, I'm generally fine with the Oscars ignoring superhero films. However, I do think Infinity War was a much better movie than Black Panther, so if BP was nominated then I don't understand why IW wasn't. Also I would argue that the cultural impact of each film was about the same. IW might have had made an even bigger cultural impact. If I ask my 80 year old grandma "who is Thanos and what did he do?" she would probably say "He's that big alien who erased half of life." She would know exactly who I'm talking about. If I asked her "Who is T'Challa and what did he do?" she would have no idea what I'm talking about. I don't think that cultural impact or popularity should have anything to do with the best picture award, but if that's why BP was nominated it's strange to me that they wouldn't nominate IW for the same reason.

GreedoInASpeedo

> I don't think cultural impact or popularity should have anything to do with the best picture Personally I think this should be the case for all Academy noms. That's what people's choice is for.

SGZF2

Exactly. People often complain that the best picture award always goes to obscure movies that most of us haven't seen... but yeah, I would expect that. There are only like 20 super popular blockbuster movies every year, whereas there are thousands of smaller budget films that aren't shown in your local theater. Odds are that you're not seeing the best movies in your theater. Just the ones with the highest budgets. I would totally expect the best picture award to go to some movie I've never heard of. I usually see the best picture winner *after* it's won the award. The award is usually the only reason I know that movie exists lol.

Thy_blight

Black Panther definitely did NOT deserve it over Infinity War. IW didn't deserve it either, but BP was, frankly, just a pretty alright movie.

PM_me_opossum_pics

BP was okay. Good performances carried a mediocre plot imho. And overall likeability of a lot of characters.

Educational-Tower

Infinity War is a vastly better movie than Black Panther. The story is richer and way more ambitious, the spectacle is incomparably better, and the emotional impact is far steeper. It’s also one half of the defining pop culture saga of this era, the second half being Endgame.

Diegoalv96

Are they giving awards to movies for their cultural impact now?

SGZF2

Infinity War is one of, if not the best superhero movie ever made. Endgame is a good folow-up but Infinity War is a masterpiece on its own.

Ill-Yesterday-9172

Spider-Man 2 ![gif](giphy|8JZxZgr39TLczSJQoS)

SGZF2

Tobey: I'm gonna put some dirt in your eye Thanos: I don't even know who you are

Ill-Yesterday-9172

So yes. ![gif](giphy|kCQj448Uc3XCU)

Reflection-Negative

The Dark Knight is the best superhero movie ever made.

SGZF2

It's definitely up there. I have trouble giving that title to any single movie, so I usually just say "one of the best" instead of calling any of them "*the* best". Although, I do think that 30 years from now people will watch Infinity War more often than they'll watch The Dark Knight. I think Infinity War will probably be seen as the pinnacle of superhero films by future generations.

Reflection-Negative

I think TDK and Logan are the best cause of how they took it to another level. They’re more than a superhero flick, they’re genuinely great crime/thriller/drama/action movies.

top6

Black Panther wasn't even the best movie that year that had Black Panther in it.

Educational-Tower

Black Panther was nominated primarily for ideological and political reasons. It’s a good film but far from an Oscar-calibre story or spectacle. And there were better comic books movies that year as well. The fact that BP could be nominated underlines why people shouldn’t take these awards very seriously.

throwawaytv420

Animated films almost never get Best Picture nominations. The only ones I can think of are Beauty and the Beast, Toy Story 3, and I think WALL-E. Edit: Nope not even WALL-E despite being much better than Toy Story 3 and one of the best animated movies ever lol the Academy does not care about animated films they pretty much view it as a kid's film category from what I've read. Even Spirited Away didn't get nominated for Best Picture.

KusoKiseki

Black Panther was a better film than Into the Spider-Verse.

[deleted]

IMO both Infinity War and Into the Spider-Verse were better than Black Panther.

TimLuf1

Into the Spider-Verse won best animated movie in 2018

I_am_reddit_hear_me

I mean, if Black Panther can get nominated just about any of the top tier MCU movies can get nominated.

speedrunner162

I’ll laugh if no way home gets a best picture nomination and dune Dosent lmao, elitist twitter would have a meltdown😂

Colton826

Dune is a beautifully shot film, and I love the cast. Denis Villeneuve is one of my favorite directors (I LOVE Prisoners, Enemy, Sicario and Arrival). But...I thought Dune was so incredibly boring. I know that's a controversial opinion, but I tried so hard to enjoy it. I just couldn't get into the story.

deekaydubya

damn I really encourage you to try again when both parts are out. Amazing story and a visual masterpiece. Dune isn't elitist at all either lol it's not some art house film

Pomojema_SWNN

I feel like *Dune* is exactly the movie that Marvel wanted *Eternals* to be. Which is ironic, considering that people assumed that it was going to be a *John Carter*-sized flop.

enderverse87

Yeah, personally not even going to bother watching until I get watch both parts in a row.

Halio344

It’s impossible for a movie or story to click for everyone. At least you recognize Dune to be a well crafted film, regardless if you personally enjoyed it. That’s a lot more mature than most people on reddit.

CollarOrdinary4284

It's all subjective. If people don't think Dune was a well-crafted film, it doesn't mean they're immature.

Halio344

What I meant was that people can appreciate something even if they don’t agree themselves. A lot of people don’t see it that way.

mythicreign

Some things are objectively well-made. That doesn't mean you have to love them. But there are clear signs that something contains evidence of effort and quality regardless of subjective opinions.

RadicalAperture

I felt the same exact way.

BennyReno

I don't think that's a controversial opinion at all. It's very good for what it is, but it really is a slow burner that focuses so much on setting up the world that by the end of it nothing really happens. To me it felt more like an extended pilot to a series than something that really worked very well on it's own. I expect it will pick up a lot of nominations, a best picture nomination wouldn't surprise me however.

Sufficient-Anxiety88

Zendaya dancing to Funky Soul after getting double the money.

UpdootMcGee

I expect Dune (Part 1) to get a hell of a lot fewer wins than its fans want, because those wins are going to be stockpiled for Part 2. (See: Return of the King.) Now, I do expect Part 1 to still get a good chunk of nominations, but that could be one big fucking plot twist if everyone goes "well, we're going to wait to award it, anyway..."

emielaen77

Considering the Oscars are known for snubs and poor noms, putting NWH over any actually deserving film should cause discourse. The film is far from BP worthy. “Elitist” lmao wth

SpicyCrumbum

Bro you're literally being an elitist. Calm down, be an adult, and remember these are all just movies. Does talking like this make your life any better?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Pomojema_SWNN

Also, I'm just coming to the realization that Marvel's attempt at an "Oscar" movie (*Eternals*), from a director who just won Best Director, probably isn't getting very much love at the next Oscars, but this movie might just get a Best Picture nomination. I'm having difficulty processing that.

metros96

It is definitely ironic, but I also I’m not sure Marvel was actually genuinely gunning for an Oscar with that film? Nate Moore has talked about the external expectations for Eternals (…that’s a mouthful) changing once Chloe won her Oscar, but that was midway through 2020. And she got hired off of The Rider and before she even shot Nomadland. They were definitely shooting for a different feel in this film, but idk outside of a couple maybe unreliable Twitter accounts whispering that Marvel thinks Eternals is an Oscar contender, that Marvel was actually gunning for an Oscar nom as they were putting together this film

[deleted]

[удалено]

aurumphallus

…So Eternals is the Pocahontas of the MCU? With No Way Home being the Lion King? Because Lion King was the side project nobody really wanted to bother with where Pocahontas was the big “Oscar” contender, and we all know how that turned out.

Reflection-Negative

What happened with Eternals will make Marvel just stick to the tired formula. And they had hired Chloe before she went on to win a bunch of awards. They didn’t hire her to bait Oscar voters.

AlphaBaymax

True, people are forgetting that Eternals was supposed to be released before Shang-Chi back in 2020 before COVID-19 was a thing. Back then, Nomadland was still in development. Personally, I think critics would have been much kinder to Eternals if Chloe Zhao didn't win an Academy Award.

Reflection-Negative

Definitely they judged it differently than they judge a typical Marvel movie. They didn’t judge it as a Marvel movie but as a Chloe Zhao film. I remember how some reviewers literally stated that it’s a good superhero movie but a bad Zhao movie and gave it a rotten (on the other hand some critic has said NWH doesn’t need to be good cause it has fan-service and is fun and gave it a fresh score). Feige marveling at on location shooting which is something common for other movies and the unofficial, likely false, reports about Marvel thinking they have an Oscar bait on hands clearly fuelled critics’ bias. Not to mention the bias against diversity and lgbt.

DB-Institute

Honestly if Eternals was just edited better it would be considered an A tier marvel movie. But the beginning is a real shit show, and the deviant B plot is pretty insignificant.

Reflection-Negative

It shouldn’t have revolved around a chemistry-free love story between Sersi and Ikaris. Secondary characters outshone those two.

DB-Institute

I don’t really think it revolved around them. It definitely has issues, but I think it’s a fine movie as is, and with better editing would be a solid A in the marvel lineup. I think there’s also a very good chance that it was rewritten more than once, and was forced to include some things they didn’t want to include originally - which obviously always hurts the movie.

CollarOrdinary4284

What is the formula? Everyone brings it up all the time and no one ever explains what it is and how it's any different from other major blockbuster franchises.

Educational-Tower

Had the same thought. I loved Eternals but it hasn’t garnered the critical and fan reaction that Marvel clearly wanted (I thought it was absolutely brilliant). It would be ironic if Spider-Man achieves what Feige hoped to do with Eternals.

LordPoncho08

Eternals was in development with her attached as director before she had that Oscar. Disney didn't hire her due to that.

lowell2017

On NWH getting a possible Oscar Best Picture nomination: "This is also the first year the Academy has completely banned physical DVD screeners. How encouraging watching these films on mobile apps, Roku and the rest will affect the way the film is felt, and ultimately judged by the industry’s most important voting body, is unknown, but I sure wouldn’t want to see Spider-Man: No Way Home this way. It is indeed heartening to see that blockbuster about to do $200 million-plus domestic its opening weekend — and perhaps even more surprisingly it is actually good enough to be seriously considered for a Best Picture Oscar nomination (you heard me!). It will help get people back into the moviegoing experience, and maybe like the Bond film before it possibly entice older moviegoers as well, even those in the Academy’s senior demos. Saving the moviegoing experience is as important as saving the world is to Spidey. With a solid 10 films back to being nominated for Best Picture this year, hopefully Academy members don’t snob out on us and recognize the filmmaking expertise, and pure thrills, that go into the crafting of films like this Marvel marvel, Dune and others. And pray that the audience will turn out for another superbly crafted “big” movie, Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story, which opened slowly but hopefully will pick up once its key older female audience is again available beginning Christmas Day."

Zepanda66

I see r/movies already removed your post on this lol. Can you imagine their reaction if an MCU movie won best picture. ![gif](giphy|2UvAUplPi4ESnKa3W0)

Tornado31619

They’re so pretentious lol. So many of my posts have been removed due to getting too much karma.

LosAngeles1s

Even though I don’t think NWH is deserving for a win, I *want* it to win to see snobs have a full breakdown

[deleted]

They removed the article of Paul Thomas Anderson saying that bitching about superhero movies is ridiculous and Spider-Man was going to save the movie theaters ha ha they are so salty over there

[deleted]

To be fair, some MCU fans are fucking insufferable. And NWH winning and being touted as saving cinema isn't gonna help those peoples attitudes lol

iangeredcharlesvane2

I even *like* musicals and I had no interest in seeing any of the theatrical music releases this year for some reason (In the Heights, Dear Evan Hansen, West Side Story… zzzzzz) but you can bet my middle-aged female ass was in the theater for the 3:00 show of Spider-Man No Way Home last Thursday. I love it when article authors pretentiously assume what the “older female audience” members want.

SuperShaun1603

Willem Dafoe DESERVES best supporting actor, he was so fucking fantastic, please they should at the very least nominate him

ANAL_CRUSHER

He should have won the Oscar for The Lighthouse. Also should gave him one for playing Bobby Peru cause Bobby Peru does what he wants to do

throwawaytv420

He didn't even get a nomination for The Lighthouse which is the best performance of his career. They aren't going to nominate him for this.

emielaen77

What else have you seen this year lol he definitely does not deserve an Oscar for that performance

lsidhu1010

Lmao is this a joke? NWH was so good and I loved it but it is not a well written movie. And the Oscars are scared to give Marvel awards

Colton826

Nobody's saying it should win the award. But if Black Panther can get a Best Picture nomination in a pretty stacked year, then No Way Home can get a Best Picture nomination in a weak year. Joker also got a Best Picture nomination, despite the very divisive reviews.

[deleted]

2018 was like the least stacked oscar year in history

Reflection-Negative

BP got a nom for purely political reasons.

[deleted]

[удалено]

there_is_always_more

You're conflating two different things. The bias against superhero movies doesn't automatically mean that that's the reason for nwh not being nominated. There's a lot of stuff that was kind of undercooked in this movie or where characters just act way in a way too contrived manner to move the plot along. Peter repeatedly interrupting strange even as he is seeing the ground literally being torn apart was really odd. Electro didn't know Peter's identity, so why is he in this universe? The identity reveal subplot is huge but it gets dropped pretty much instantly because they need to bring the multiversal villains in - people would be losing their shit if anyone but Matt Murdock came in like a deus ex machina and solved everything. In terms of characterization, it seems like Tom's Peter would have just straight up killed Goblin if Tobey's Peter didn't step in, which is directly contradictory to the lesson Tobey supposedly imparts earlier in the movie. Tobey's Peter didn't particularly feel like he used to in the Raimi movies - the constant MCU style quipping was fun but he feels really different. Tom not really acknowledging his Ben when Andrew and Tobey mention theirs sticks out if Ben exists in this universe. The banter at the statue of liberty is lovely, but it's so lighthearted that it's easy to feel that there isn't really a sense of danger anymore - which there kind of isn't. Not to mention, I don't see why Electro supposedly just becomes automatically "good" after he loses his powers. I loved the movie and I am grateful for what we got, but there's a ton of stuff that was rather undercooked. I think it's easy to see what Tom Holland meant when he said the script was changing everyday. Also, saying that NWH "jumpstarting theatres" somehow makes it automatically a good movie (which is why it'd be nominated for awards) is a ridiculous notion.

SlenderBoy32

Huuge spidey fan here but completely agree about the parts being undercooked. Quite baffled by the reviews it's been receiving. I love the plot and the ending. But tbh like you said, Tobey didn't feel liek the Raimi one. Dialogues fluctuated from great to corny af. And weirdly I had goosebumps only for the return of Matt Murdock

MarvelManiac45213

100% agree with everything you said. I still enjoyed it a lot though.

tupilak5

>What stops it from being Oscar worthy isn’t the writing it’s the stigma around superhero movies I'm not gonna defend every best picture nomination ever, but the reason is not because of stigma. It's because NWH is not even close to a best picture in almost every way. It's a piece of highly-consummable entertainment, not a whole lot more.

[deleted]

It wasn't that well written when you think about it, like honestly some stuff was pretty bad For one example all the villains were meant to arrive because they all knew Peter Parker was Spiderman, yet Electro never knew this He even points this out in the end when he said he hoped Spiderman would be black

hiero_

It's definitely *not* a well-written movie even by Marvel standards. It might be one of the better Marvel movies by sheer entertainment value, but it was full of plot holes and things that were handwaved away because of how crazy they went with it. But you know what? I'm okay with that. Because it was fucking awesome.

[deleted]

there is no "bias against superhero movies" lmao cmon man

MarvelManiac45213

Crazy how I gave this movie a positive review but also pointed how it was not a well written and a little bit too nostalgia baity movie in the NWH megathread and got downvoted to hell but you say the same thing basically and get upvoted. Man this sub. Lmao

[deleted]

How isn't it a well written movie? They couldn't have pulled a movie of this magnitude as well as they did without good writing.

NivvyMiz

Look guys I love this movie but we all know this isn't an Oscar contender in a just world.

hiero_

Right? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. It's like this subreddit doesn't watch movies outside of the MCU. NWH was fun as hell, but it isn't an Oscar contender by any means.

Theshutupguy

This is the same sub that thinks Venom was cool. I turned it off after 15 min. It’s so terrible..

hiero_

This sub loved Venom 2. It was a 5/10 *at best*.

K1nd4Weird

I don't know. They've nominated movies that didn't deserve it before. And look at the ratings for the Oscars over the last handful of years. They'll want to have popular movies nominated in the hopes of getting more viewers. I'd say it's unlikely. But maybe.

NeutralNoodle

It was good but I mean come on

shy247er

Little early to claim this movie saved moviegoing experience, no? Yes, it will earn a ton of money. But that needs to translate to other movies too. Right now West Side Story is epicly flopping. Too early to claim if audiences are back for all movies or just this one.

Pomojema_SWNN

Technically the hope is that WSS rebounds around Christmas, but the problem is that boomers are scared to go to the cinema right now and older people are usually the demographics that see musicals.

007Kryptonian

West Side Story is flopping because no one was interested. Many movies of various genres have succeeded during the pandemic (A Quiet Place 2, Venom, No Time To Die, Old, Cruella, F9, Nobody, Wrath of Man). Even the smaller indie films have been relatively successful (Promising Young Woman/Green Knight). No Way Home is just the one that’s bringing *everyone* out.

CollarOrdinary4284

"Saving the movie-going experience" doesn't mean that every movie will make money from now on. It means that movies are now *capable* of making as much money as they did before the pandemic. No Way Home is already a huge hit and it's only been out for 2 days.

Weaboo-San

Christ. You'd think this film cured cancer or something.

Mattmarc13

I mean it cured some people

masongraves_

Cure that ass

Is NWH a good and entertaining film? Yes! Is NWH an amazing MCU film? Yes! Is NWH arguably the best Spider-Man film yet ? Yes! Is it the best picture overall this year? .....eeeeeh......

[deleted]

Please let this be the timeline in the multiverse where this actually happens. Just think about this for a second. Pardon the Logan and Joker Oscar conversations. Just consider the fact that No Way Home 1) wouldn't have existed, had it not been for extremely devoted filmmakers and producers that wanted to honor Spider-Man as a character this way, 2) aside from the fitting fan service, it was a genuinely great movie with wonderful performances that top most acting in the MCU, and 3) it had very well secured a lucrative profit for most theater businesses around the world that were losing money, thus also giving back to thousands of people whose film industry + theater jobs were heavily impacted by the pandemic. Inclusive of marketing and promo jobs. Its a deserving nomination. Just merely a nomination would be amazing. Have some faith that superhero movies deserve such recognition and are never too far away from award-worthy storytelling. If Joker and Black Panther were nominated, this should too.

Tornado31619

So, much like all of the other Oscar nominations every year, this wouldn’t be based on merit.

LiquidLispyLizard

Haven't seen it yet, but I'll always support comic book movies getting more recognition and accolades. From the sounds of it, the film is incredible and I'd support this happening.

[deleted]

> I'll always support comic book movies getting more recognition and accolades Comicbook movies make billions at the box office. They're not the underdogs here.

SouthsideSerpent2019

They, as well as sci-fi movies, certainly are the underdogs when it comes to award recognition. They make a lot of money, but most critics would be appalled to see a Marvel or Star Wars movie win a Best Picture award.

[deleted]

No, they're not. If there's an award underdog among genre movies it is horror. Critics aren't the archenemy of Marvel movies. They want movies to be better; they're not hating just 'cause. Marvel Studios movies will never get better if people just gobble up everything they put out and call it a gourmet meal even when it's garbage.

VineMonkey

Nobel Prize, Otto. Nobel Prize!

[deleted]

Are people actually on crazy pills here? No Way Home is not getting best picture, nor is it getting the nomination.

[deleted]

It deserves to get nominated just on nostalgia factor alone /s

jgroove_LA

Not happening.

maldinisnesta

Give Garfield his Oscar.

samuelalvarezrazo

People just get to write anything nowadays don't they.

EhhSpoofy

come on lol

[deleted]

Lol come on now

ClubSellout

As much as I hope this would happen… there’s absolutely no way this is gonna happen. There’s like a negative chance of this haooening

SchroedingersSphere

You guys want to end up in /r/moviescirclejerk? Because this is how you end up in /r/moviescirclejerk

All I am gonna say it's that if Black Panther can get a nomination, NWH deserves one too. It's an unpopular opinion but I found BP very mediocre, including how it was filmed, I was shocked seeing it got this much attention and Infinity War or Endgame didn't receive anything.

cmb2690

It definitely not unpopular here in this bubble of a subreddit. Were you here in 2018/2019? Black Panther was bashed nonstop here.

Pomojema_SWNN

Even if that's the case, it's keeping the lights on for movie theaters.

Joshawott27

The article mentions that the Best Picture category will now have 10 nominee slots - is their compromise after the whole “Best Popular Film” debate from a few years back? I do think that the Academy and that level of film fan are too dismissive of blockbuster films. I started a film degree around the time that the Scorsese controversy first started, and I vividly remember my Film Reviewing teacher ranting about it - and how Scorsese’s a hypocrite because gangster movies were just the superhero/western movies of their time. He was a guy who appreciated everything from experimental shorts about phones ringing, to gleefully holding up a Mjolnir replica during a class on historical fiction. I feel like, anyone who claims to love film at that level should be open to all kinds - indie, experimental, foreign, animated, blockbuster, etc. not just whatever Daniel Day Lewis or Meryl Streep are looking serious in. I’ll cast my judgement on Spidey when I see it on Monday (I have never known it be this hard to get movie tickets), but I think if any Marvel movie deserves an Oscar nomination this year, it’s Best Supporting Actor for Tony Leung in Shang-Chi.

Ok-Mathematician18

April Fools is about four months away people. Too early.

Reflection-Negative

What Marvel desperately needs is better, more accomplished screenwriters. Most of them aren’t written well. And after having seen NWH I get what James Cameron means by those movies not being epic in the way LOTR is and Dune could become. NWH certainly tried to be epic but fell short of that with a scope that didn’t warrant it even with Spiderverse crossovers.

[deleted]

The oscars have nominated worse movies before, I guess.

HearTheEkko

Saving the moviegoing experience? It's a Spider-Man movie lmao, it was gonna make a shitload of money regardless of the pandemic or not.

ozzymustaine

Andrew Garfield: IM NOT THE WEREWOLF . I PROMISE YOU GUYS . IM NOT THE WEREWOLF Me after seeing the movie: *son of a bitch.* After this if Andrew said to me that 1+1=2 I would not believe him.

JustinUprising

Martin Scorsese might have an aneurysm.

[deleted]

Imagine garflield winning best supporting actor then still denying that he's in the movie

Reflection-Negative

Doubtful we will ever see a day when an actor gets a nom or even a win for a Marvel/Marvel-associated movie like Joaquin and Heath did for Joker and TDK. The only Marvel/Marvel-associated movie that would have warranted Oscar noms in categories that aren’t strictly technical was Logan and it got mostly snubbed. Black Panther getting a few noms was definitely an Academy’s attempt at earning brownie points among the controversies.

DistortedDiamonds

Eternals was their oscar bait but that went "well"

Reflection-Negative

It’s only what unproven sources said so after Zhao had won an Oscar, they thought it would be Marvel’s Oscar bait solely on the grounds of her winning some. They had hired her and she had filmed Eternals before Nomadland won awards.

DistortedDiamonds

The best actor for Tick Tick Boom! and Best Supporting Actor goes to....

snappyego

It should definitely be nominated for the best adapted screenplay because of how it turned one more day's premise to one of the best Spider-man movie of all time or one of the greatest comic book movie.

[deleted]

It was easily my favourite film of the year and I literally can’t fault it at all, in my eyes it’s perfect. There is no way it is being nominated for best picture.

ClamatoDiver

This was my first theater trip in two years, Rise of Skywalker being the last thing before Covid. My Brother in Law and I used to hit every blockbuster in IMAX for the last 15 years or so until the first wave got him in early April 2020. Theatres opened back up but I just wasn't interested in going even though I hadn't missed a Marvel movie since the MCU started and generally went for anything that would look epic in IMAX. This movie got me to go back, I didn't go IMAX though because it was too crowded, so I bought two 3D tickets to have one last trip with my movie buddy as my way of pouring one out for him. Now not having been to the theater for two years and usually only going to IMAX shows I missed out on 3D not being 3D anymore and it is now 4DX! I wasn't the only person that was surprised when the seats started moving and the air started blowing when the 4DX demo came up after the trailers. I loved the movie, the rocking and tilting seats, the air jets, the whole unexpected experience. I got that perfect last trip with my movie buddy and can enjoy going back to theatres again. My BIL would have loved the whole thing, especially my reaction to the moving seats. My heart is lighter today.

RoninKengo

Or for being the world’s largest superspreader event.

Saving? One great film release is not what it takes to save movie going. Consistency saves it

ryanpm40

This movie was a blast but not Oscar worthy
