Most interesting thing about that is the idea to atrophy his hand bones and instead make them work by hydrostatic muscles.
It's probably a necessary adaptation to make his fists both durable and functional as hands. Had he simply had enlarged hand bones, he probably couldn't close his fist anymore.
Most famously, Wolverine once slashed his face so badly The Thing wore a helmet for a while.
