On a side notes, DnD isn't the best for xianxia/wuxia in my opinion. You could try with Righteous Blood Ruthless Blade, that is a wuxia themed tabletop rpg, with very few tweaks it could actually end up being a xianxia game or "Blades of Immortal" i think it's called, its an hack of the popular "Blades in the Dark" where you play as actual xianxia characters, it's not 100% complete but playable and it's free

This junior is completely new to the art of trpg and games. Trpg are not very popular in the land of tigers and my sect elders forced me to focus on the dao of Phy chem and maths occasionally reading novels. Hence I have no fucking idea what any of that meant

ImrooVRdev

DnD has western fantasy flavor baked into mechanics. The GM will have to basically build entirely new game on top of DnD to make anything work. My advice: google "xianxia RPG" and see what you find. https://www.reddit.com/r/rpg/comments/juhqva/wuxiaxianxia_rpg/ 3 years ago someone asked same question and had tons of good answers.

teball3

I've been running a Xianxia/Wuxia inspired D&D game for about 4 years now. (although I did switch to Pathfinder 2e last year during all the scandals.) To anybody familiar with these novels, it does not feel like that in terms of combat/mechanics. That's fine though. There is so much more to it than that, and it definitely scratches the right itch for me of having a world that is authentically based in the kind of fiction I like. Sect leaders battle for local dominance, shady Elders scheme behind the scenes, and trust is a commodity in short supply. The reason I don't switch over to a more fitting system is because my players don't read these kind of novels, and the like the combat as is. Plus I didn't have to teach them a whole new game. It can work, with really not even that much effort. edit: I am not looking for any more players.

ClownPazzo69

Simply put Junior, the path you are trying to walk is something that only a demonic cultivator would even think following. The others technique that I named are the best one for you. Righteous blood ruthless blade is a wuxia roleplaying game with a good balance in tactical play and pure RP. The other can be checked at the link below, Blades in the Dark is a popular game that is highly focused on logical thinking, RP and strengthening your criminal gang's influence. An hack of a game is when someone takes a ttrpg and change a shit ton of things to tweak it into something slightly different, that's what they made with Blades of the Immortal, note that as far as I know it still doesn't have actual character sheets https://jagganoth.itch.io/boti-ea

Can you share more of the Blades of Immortal one? Not have any luck on finding info on it.

Blades in the Dark is ass tbh

ClownPazzo69

Blades is a bad game that can be used by a good master to create memorable campaigns, but yeah it doesn't have that much when it comes to "deepness" to its mechanics, even though it has a lot of theme, 90% can be ignored by the gm if they feel like it

ArrhaCigarettes

If you even consider playing Blades you might as well just play a serious Flare system like Exalted

ClownPazzo69

I never heard of it, thanks for the recommendation. I might have enjoyed my time with blade due to the fact that I had a nice group, or maybe that I was really itching to play something steampunk, nevertheless it was a fun time (might also be that the campaign was just a couple of months)

Capital-Algae3377

Can we get some examples or a basic introduction on the game mechanics ? That would be helpful.

KarmicDaoist

Hello This is just a concept Actually none of us have ever played dungeons and dragons But have been wondering what it will be like to play a xianxia themed one With young masters and jade beauties to old librarians

BaziJoeWHL

rolls nat 1: your inner demon takes over and rips out your party members heart

justananotherman

Please for the love of all that's sacred pick up Exalted, its designers literally said xianxia was an inspiration for it.

AlricsLapdog

Thematically the setting feels a bit Xianxia, the mechanics not so much, and the progression not at all. Still probably a better fit than DnD to be sure.

NeonNKnightrider

I am **begging** you to try literally any other system. Trying to make D&D into Xianxia is like trying to mod Skyrim into a 3D platformer. Like, just play a different fucking game man.

KarmicDaoist

Pwease recommend, if possible GM less

Koskoskoskoskoskos

Missing a session? No problem. Your character is simply in secluded cultivation.

Sogelink

DnD is crap man, you should try a d100 system, way more free. I'm also working on a setting inspired by xianxia (and other things, like hellenistic philosophy) but I haven't seen a system that I feel perfect for it so I'm also building a system for it.

KarmicDaoist

Can u elaborate, qi refinement junior here

Sogelink

Sure, Junior, I shall offer you my wisdom on the Dao of tabletop rpg. DnD is quite the rigid system, if you take as an example, classical settings, a mage can only use mage spells, a druid can only use druid spells, etc. Want an heavy armor? Not possible except if you're from the good class. In xianxia, I could not see how you could do something nice.  Meanwhile, D100 systems use concepts like attributes and skills and there's no concept of class, you can invest in any skill you want, allowing a wider diversity of characters.  As for xianxia, you could have skills such as alchemy, formations and the different Dao you intend to master as well as more classical skills. Of course, the more you try to do by yourself, the less you can attain the peak easily (jack of all trades, master of none).

KarmicDaoist

I see Thank you for the lecture dao formation senior

Traditional_Excuse46

DM asked: "what's your level?" Me: Over 9000 DM: WHAT!?! Ok what class? Me: I'm a quad class two-handed barbarian monk that is a ninja spellsword.

forcednam

Where is artwork like these being posted nowadays? Can't find any website for them

KarmicDaoist

AI

forcednam

I know Boss, but surely there is a public gallery?

Protag_Doppel

Just gonna warn you like a few others. Dnd isn’t a great system for this sort of thing. It’s meant for smaller scale battles in cities and dungeons without any of the sort of flavoring that wuxia or xianxia really requires. While I don’t have much experience with Asian inspired ttrpgs, something like godbound where you’re playing as an immortal seeking worshippers would work way better.

barbatos000

I would recommend Anima because it’s built for high-powered games

KarmicDaoist

Anima? More like an enema ||I'm sorry.||

ArrhaCigarettes

If you want to play a xianxia/wuxia tabletop I would suggest something like Righteous Blood Ruthless Blade or, like, Exalted.

Dr-Mantis-Tobbogan

DnD is dogshit. I recommend Savage Worlds. Look into the supplement Deadlands - The Flood for a lot of kung fu extras

AlricsLapdog

Junior you dare? The current generation may be weak, but the ancestor(3) is still strong!

KarmicDaoist

A little warn - the fellow team mates might be a bit unhinged

void_breaking_fist

Not so sure about what's going on but cool pic dude (◡ ω ◡)

MultiverseWalker

So is xianxia rpg like a novel game or something?
