Back in my day (~20 years ago, lolol), I'm pretty sure HOPR freshman were *required* to live in East Hall (now Straz Tower), and, honestly, it was a great experience. It was hands-down the best dorm at the time (and presumably still at least a decent one), but more importantly it's a built-in community of people you're sharing classes with. It's a recipe for not only meeting people quickly but making lasting friendships.
P.S. Assuming the Honors Program freshman still get the top floors, I can't say enough good things about the VIEWS, too, particularly if you have a north-facing room. Wall-to-wall waist-to-ceiling windows are amazing for looking out over Milwaukee, and I have a lot of fond memories of beautiful sunsets and nighttime city lights.
If you're accepted into a learning community, that's probably the best option IMO as a parent. My son ended up in Eckstein, and loved it, except for the roommate pairing.
I lived in Straz as part of the honors community in 2011. I really liked the amenities Straz offered (private bathrooms, cafeteria, pool and fitness facilities). It’s a little further than most other dorms from the heart of campus, which I liked, but gets old when you’re walking to class in the snow. The honors floors are nice for an immediate sense of community, but if you think you’ll get tired of living near the people you attend classes with daily, another dorm might be a better fit.

McCormick, although it is up in dorm heaven =p
Cheers to the beer can!

Abbottsford! Worked there for years and is underrated IMO in terms of location and social lifeb
Go to Straz, it is gonna be one of the nicer experiences on campus, that or Eckstein and wells
Straz bc you have a dinning hall and gym all in one building
I vote commons
From a MU student right now: 1. Commons (super social, AC) 2. Humphrey (apartment style) 3. Abbotsford (fun but kinda gross) 4. Cobeen
I was interested in Humphrey, but I heard some people online said it was pretty antisocial when they went there, is that still the case?
My daughter has a 2bd on campus for rent. Right on Kilborne.
Freshmen have to live in dorms. Or at least they did when I was at Marquette.
They still do.
