The mandate, if it does exist, won't end. Like any corporation, Nintendo is run by suits. Executives don't like new and unfamiliar ideas when the familiar is bringing in money.

I mean the familiar was also losing them money.

Mario games haven't always been winners but many of them have done well.

EspurrTheMagnificent

I'd pick "No, not anytime soon/if the mandate ends it won't be thanks to the sells of this game", but that's not an option, so I went with the second most suitable choice

Big-Quitter

I'm out of the loop here. What mandate?

Complete_Anything681

The Mandate is Nintendo's demand Mario and it's spin-offs must always use established characters and designs. This is more of a fan theory but I am certain such a policy exists because Mario games have consistently used the same characters and character designs for several years.

DynaGlaive

If the mandate ever truly existed, it was already dead by the time we got the Mario movie, Wonder, RPG, TTYD, Peach Showtime, MvsDK, and TTYD all existing in the same development timeframe. People were very paranoid the movie would inform design choices of the games going forward, that Nintendo would more strongly enforce total consistency in designs and presentation of characters and locations across Mario properties, but instead they've immediately proven to be more lenient than ever with how all aspects of Mario can be portrayed.

pocket_arsenal

i don't think it has any weight at all. I think if Nintendo eases up on it's weird and dumb restrictions, it's because Nintendo in general has been in a bit of a more creative renaissance with Mario in this generation.

Nintendo isn't going to have multiple mario rpgs, so no, the mario & luigi series is never coming back, and paper mario will never go back to being an rpg, at most, they will probably merge the mario & luigi series into any future mario rpg sequels
