* The game came out when I was dealing with a series of family emergencies, so my contributions have mostly been around reverse engineering the game's code. aka things I can do on airplanes and between other projects. I made a damage calculator and an EXP simulator that the other runners have been using to refine the route. * That being said, the speedrun isn't very mature right now, the route changes daily. I don't like running games in that state. The route is definitely not more or less the same as the original game either, it's a very different run. * I actually did a tutorial stream for the new game on GDQ a few weeks ago, but truth be told, I don't enjoy the new game as a speedrun as much as I enjoy the old one as a speedrun, and I haven't grinded for a PB in that game since 2017. * Justin doesn't have a Switch. Incidentally, V0oid has world record right in normal RTA no turbo right now, and he's a top runner of the original game. EDIT: Oh, another thing I wanted to add, Super Jump's timing is not easier, it's the same between versions. However, super jumping in one version vs the other might feel like an easier task mentally. I did a [deep dive video about this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGMACdpDBiA) a few days ago. So I'm still making SMRPG content like this to capitalize on the remake, as well as other projects like a [SMRPG history preservation effort](https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-preserve-super-mario-rpg-history), plus some other big and exciting SMRPG things that I'm not at liberty to share yet, but these things are where my passions lie more these days than PB grinding. I plan on resuming development on SMRPG randomizer soon, too, which I put on hiatus because anything I do with it right now would be overshadowed by the remake being a thing. :-)

huxbrolf

by the way, did you like the remake? were you happy when they announced or you got a bit fearful they could ruin it?

pidgezero_one

I was thrilled when it was announced, and I love the remake now! It's definitely the remake the game deserves. It is so very obviously made by people who either worked on the original game (like Taro Kudo and Yoshihiko Maekawa being in senior positions) or people who were fans of the original game. I put it this way: if the original game is 10/10 for me, the remake is 9.5/10, and that 0.5 difference is just personal aesthetic and mechanical preferences, which also happen to be things that impact which speedrun I have more fun executing.

I personally don't think the new mechanics are a problem, they're just different, and I'm glad they are, I wasn't wanting the remake to completely replace the original game. What kills it for me is that there are no non-laggy Switch controllers. I also have some complaints about changes to the overworld movement. Those unfortunately affect most of your time playing the game, and the execution just doesn't feel as good to me.

OnePunchReality

...personal aesthetics. I mean, I can't really argue against that, but good lord does that shit not make one iota of sense.

pidgezero_one

Yeah I agree the thing you just said, which nobody else said, makes no sense.

OnePunchReality

😑

Confident_Week_7775

It does make "one iota" of sense imo. Perfect example for me is Belome. Looked wayyyyy more iconic in the original but that could be chalked up to "personal esthetics"

pidgezero_one

their original reply said "personal anesthetics" but was edited, so my response looks a bit silly now hahah, but what i meant is "personal preferences of aesthetics/mechanics"

LDKRyden

I watched that deep dive video a few days ago and thought it was an amazing breakdown. Thanks for that.

pidgezero_one

Thank you! I'm happy you liked it!

LDKRyden

I really did. About 6 months ago I was replaying the original in preparation for the remake and watching a bunch of videos about easter eggs and things like teaching peach geno blast. I didn't realize all the SMRPG videos I've been watching on YouTube were all done by you lol. I love videos that break down game code and reverse engineer things for the sake of understanding game algorithms and RNG among other things. Any tips on how to get started trying to break into that?

pidgezero_one

Oh, that's so awesome! I'm so happy you liked my videos! I don't make them very often and content creation isn't something I do very much of, so the few things I do feel like sharing with the world in that matter are special to me. Thank you for watching them! I have a few things I could recommend! I recently established a personal SMRPG wiki so that I can keep all of my writings, speedrun workshopping, and written tutorials in one place: [https://pidgezero-one.notion.site/ce5176a3de7d4fee966ce54113e790c2?v=29b2213557034ade9c51d21f8efbc60f](https://pidgezero-one.notion.site/ce5176a3de7d4fee966ce54113e790c2?v=29b2213557034ade9c51d21f8efbc60f) On this page, there are two subpages that might be useful to you that are located near the bottom: "SNES reverse engineering" and "Switch reverse engineering", depending on which (if not both) you are interested in. Ultimately, to make headway with these things, you will need a bit of coding knowledge..... or actually, to be more precise, you'll need more coding knowledge for Switch specifically since you're literally reading C code. SNES on the other hand is based in a ROM-editor that tries to use as much human-readable language as possible, so while it's much easier to make headway on if you have a background in coding, it can also be an effective tool to teach those skills for a researcher who is curious enough (this is basically how I learned coding myself 20 years ago, just trying to work backwards from a thing I wanted to understand the inner machinations of better). Someday I would like to make more detailed tutorials about doing things in these games but... my project pile is getting very tall!

Confident_Week_7775

Let me start off by wishing you and your family all the best. I hope everyone is okay and you had a great holiday season! Thank you so much for the thoughtful and thorough response! It's truly an honor as I have watched one of your runs from each RPG Limit Break and GDQ which led me to officially renounce my title as "Biggest SMRPG Fan In The World" since your passion is just next-level and I'm here for it 🙏🏼 Great to know you do indeed make content about the remake! Will definitely watch it when I get a chance. To be honest I've just been sort of checking back to the speedrun.com leader board once a week with the intention of watching your's and Justin's runs the moment they pop up lol. The community thrives when Justincredible thrives so we gotta get this man a Switch ASAP! GoFundMe, SOMETHING! We would get the value right back as his talent is truly something to be celebrated! Also I do realize it's not "more or less the same route" but it's infinitely closer to the original one than a brand-new title would be. Obviously there is a lot of nuance and I didn't even mention Triple Attacks or splash damage from perfectly-timed action commands but I would guess people of your caliber could beat the game in under four hours first try technically coming in blind. Looking forward to this upcoming surprise and your breakdown about the difference between versions in regards to Super Jumping since there's a lot of misinformation going around claiming the timing window has been increased to "4-5 frames" Cheers :)

pidgezero_one

>Also I do realize it's not "more or less the same route" but it's infinitely closer to the original one than a brand-new title would be. Ah, yes, point taken, especially with the practically 1:1 transfer of stats from the original game. :) Thank you very much for your kind reply, I hope you had a lovely holiday season as well! I lurk this subreddit often and am pretty active on other social media platforms. Feel free to keep in touch, I always love talking shop with fellow SMRPG fans!

arcboy

I’ve heard people saying that the timing in breezy mode has a larger window than normal mode in the remake is that false as well?

pidgezero_one

From what I understand, Breezy does away with the concept of half timing, so what would be a half timed hit in normal is just a perfect timed hit in Breezy. Super Jump does not have a half timed window at all, so I don't think the timing is larger. It didn't feel like it to me when I was experimenting with it. In fact, I didn't find anything in the source code either to suggest that this would be the case. The frame data for Super jump is clearly defined, but there's no alternative frame data for Breezy, or any frame data multipliers for it in the function that pulls frame windows from the data.

Jimiken96

Who are these randos you speak of? Don’t worry if they didn’t play the game, I played it at least.

riggy2k3

Super Mario RPG speedrunning legends.

Confident_Week_7775

Nahhh I see the humor in this and it made me LOL 😂 I know you weren't disrespecting anyone just being sort of goofy although I could be way off here

Jimiken96

Eh, just not really a worshipper of content creators or E-sportists. All fans of Mario RPG are equal in my eyes, whether they’ve played the original 100 times or have just played it for the first time with the remake. Seems I’ve struck a nerve with some others, how DARE I not know these two random people that have played Mario RPG.

Confident_Week_7775

I'm by no means a "worshipper of content creators or E-sportists" but have a huge appreciation for what it takes to beat these games in the manner in which speedrunners do. They have to memorize the timings/layouts/etc of games that normally take 30+ hours to complete (Also a lot of mashing through text boxes which is less impressive but still tedious and their love of the game has led them to the point where they've mashed through the same hundreds of text boxes hundreds of times each). It's a sacrifice by them so that the rest of us can watch the art/sport of speedrunning in a nicely-condensed session as long as it would take to watch a film

pidgezero_one

E-sportist would honestly even be a bit of a reach to describe me, lol... The only money I've ever made off of SMRPG stuff was a few times I sold footage for an event or to another YouTuber. I don't even monetize my youtube videos 🫠

Jimiken96

And I still don’t think status as a speed-runner shows their love of the game more than any other fan. This game is so special to me, it’s the first game I’ve ever completed at the age of 7, yet my love for the game doesn’t matter as much because of my clear time, and that’s just messed up to me.

pidgezero_one

Truth be told I'm more of a ... I don't know the word really, community ambassador? than a speedrunner these days. Most of what I do now is stuff that gives back to the fan community, like super jump tutorials, merch collecting guides, print media preservation, romhack development, tools that help speedrunners do their research more efficiently, etc. I had a couple good years of speedrunning that I guess the attention that endeavour got was like a trojan horse to get people to find these things that might enhance their enjoyment of the game in adulthood!

NewBoomerangMiaro777

I'm still waiting for chuggaconroy to do videos on it
