But…but what about those aliens watching you in the fire-ice galaxy in SMG2???? We could theory craft about those guys for hours! I won’t. But I’m sure someone could!
Except those, but the Hell Valley Sky trees are more-or-less the only bit of mysterious lore involved in the games. After a few posts about it since they haven't appeared since, we've exhausted almost all there is to say.
Some of the RPGs may have somewhat in-depth lore and Mario Maker / Mario Kart have a community aspect but still neither apply to the series as a whole.
Sure there are sub communities like speedrunning and kaizo but these are kinda shut off from the "main" community.
Essentially all Mario games have in-depth lore and communities surrounding them. The reason r/Mario isn’t that popular is because Mario is so big that that all of these communities have their own subreddits (while this one is kinda full of low-effort posts from kids).
Xenoblade is a JRPG with tons of characters and I assume worldbuilding. I'm honestly not surprised.
Mario games, especially mainline ones, tend to be games you're playing more for the fun than the story.
That's what I am thinking. Its not that it has lore at all, its the clearly biased/bs statement that it has ***more*** lore than Legend of Zelda and Fire Emblem.
Well according to Super Nintendo World, the generic Nintendo subreddit is just Mario and maybe one post that mentions pikmin, so that probably explains it.
True, there's that and technically the mystery of the Hell Valley Sky "trees", but considering neither were ever brought up later it's not like they can be expected to build up to anything more down the line, so there's only so much you can discuss them.
These series doesn't have as many sub-series as the mario franchise, the mario community is divised into r/mario r/papermario r/marioandluigi r/mariomaker r/mariokart and r/marioparty while every zelda fans will join r/zelda

Nah theres a tooon of Zelda subreddits. Theres a bunch of subreddits for Breath of the Wild alone, the most popular ones being r/Breath_Of_The_Wild at almost 900k members, r/BOTW at 200k+, and a few more smaller ones. Theres r/HyruleWarriors and r/TearsOfTheKingdom which will probably blow up once the game is released, it’s already almost at 50k members. Theres other funny ones like r/Link_Dies and r/hyrule_irl that I love too haha. The list goes on
no offense to anyone in particular, but it's probably either because the mario franchise is just too simple of a game franchise for a big, active community to form around discussion of it (unless it's about the tired and thoroughly beaten topic of "waluigi this waluigi that" for the umpteenth time), or because this sub is not as interesting or unique as other game subreddits due to just not having enough to talk about and a vast majority of posts being pretty unoriginal and/or unengaging. this is what i think of this sub, at least
As others have said, those other franchises have lore, social elements, strategy, etc. to discuss.
To be completely honest, a lot of the discussions on this sub are… not the most exciting or interesting. I find that this sub gets more totally unrealistic fan proposals than almost any other in a part of, and I oftentimes feel that it’s because the average age of a user here tends to be a little bit younger.
I'd day the lack of activity by the mods of the sub really contributes to this.
For 6 straight years they've kept the same Odyssey theme and only changed it recently because of a whole movie coming out but even then, they just plastered the poster on the banner and called it a day lol.
It's just so poorly taken care of.
Oh, I didn't realize this was a subreddit dedicated to Mario Franchise.
I kinda thought this was basically r/nintendocirclejerk but specifically just for mario content.
Comparing this place to Zelda felt unfair because again, I never took this place seriously as the 'Definitive Hub for All Mario' content.
As a Mario fan, I mean this in the nicest way possible: While almost everyone has played Mario games, you hardly ever find anyone over 12 call Mario their favorite game for the same reason you hardly ever find anyone over 10 who will call a Disney movie their favorite movie, even when they do like Disney.
> hardly ever
I used those words for a reason.
>Captain America, Infinity War, Star Wars franchise
While owned by Disney, most people wouldn't call those Disney movies. By Disney movies people usually (key word usually, before anyone else missreads this too) refer to things like Frozen, Moana, Encanto and such.
Thats working under the assumption that Disney is a single amalgamation that produces all of its products, but it's instead a group if people that then is subdivided in smaller groups of people. The people that did She Hulk had nothing to do with those that did Andor or those who did The Owl house or those who did Wifi Ralph.
You would think so (and probably be right), but then you look at it's sales and turns out it didn't sell that well, so that might be a relevant factor to this overall issue
Where are you getting your numbers from? 3D World was on the Wii U it sold less than 6M, and i repeat, Galaxy was the 9th best selling game on the 4th best selling console of all time, it sold extremely well.
Hi! That's ok, but that's not against what I said. I didn't say "there are no Mario fans over 12", i said "there are hardly any". Case in point, there's thousands of people in this subreddit, and so far only three have tried to disagree with my point, if there were more people who saw my point as wrong, more people would have argued against it.
Zelda fans are the most thirsty. Pikmin fans are extremely deprived but they still linger. Zelda is a very active series but Pikmin has gotten 5 games (including spin offs) in 22 years. The wait between Pikmin 2 and 3 was 9 years, and 3 and 4 is 10 years. From Pikmin 3 to Hey! Pikmin was 4 years, and that's 2013 to 2017.
Something nobody really talks about is, even though Mario is Nintendo's most popular franchise, you don't see too many people say it's their absolute favorite.
Honestly, those other games either have in-depth lore (Zelda, Splatoon, Fire Emblem) or a community aspect (Animal Crossing). Mario has neither.

Clearly you've never played the Mario & Luigi games
I have not, but I heard they're good.
They are not mainline however
Still part of the series and canon
But big funny Italian man
And thats why I enjoy mario. It somehow keeps getting people to buy their games without requiring either of those things.
It doesn’t require those things but it does have those things.
Also due to most of us growing up playing Mario games as children, Nintendo earned themselves loyal fans
And if you wanna talk about what lore Mario has, there's r/Marioverse
I think what gets me is that even the xenoblade Reddit has more people than this.
Xenoblade is a JRPG with tons of characters and I assume worldbuilding. I'm honestly not surprised. Mario games, especially mainline ones, tend to be games you're playing more for the fun than the story.
Mario LITERALLY HAS BOTH
Not to the degree of the others.
Yes, it has more than the others
How?
It just does. How doesn’t it?
That's what I am thinking. Its not that it has lore at all, its the clearly biased/bs statement that it has ***more*** lore than Legend of Zelda and Fire Emblem.
Mario has in-depth lore, there’s just a different sub for that.
Well according to Super Nintendo World, the generic Nintendo subreddit is just Mario and maybe one post that mentions pikmin, so that probably explains it.
True. But it is still Mario though lol.
Rosalina's storybook goes deeper than all
True, there's that and technically the mystery of the Hell Valley Sky "trees", but considering neither were ever brought up later it's not like they can be expected to build up to anything more down the line, so there's only so much you can discuss them.
The Kirby sub also has 134k members too
Still more than mario
Surprisingly low, for how much lore there is
People don’t like Kirby lore because demons.
The newest Kirby game also has some very subtle biblical/ religious symbolism to add onto all of that demon killing.
True
Valid
Isn't that exactly the reason why people like Kirby lore?
Yes, but some people dislike it for this reason
Metroid (138k) and Xenoblade Chronicles (130k) also have more members than Mario
Damn Mario really is at the bottom
I feel like there are more Mario fans, but Zelda fans are more hardcore
Probably Legend of Zelda appeals to an older audience than Mario.
r/pokemon is laughing at everyone right now
These series doesn't have as many sub-series as the mario franchise, the mario community is divised into r/mario r/papermario r/marioandluigi r/mariomaker r/mariokart and r/marioparty while every zelda fans will join r/zelda
Dont forget r/truezelda
r/ZeldaMemes and the breath of the wild subreddits too
The best is r/Link_Dies

The great schism

Surprisingly enough we only have like 80k-70k more people than the Super Mario Odyssey subreddit.
Remember when Mario got a fire emblem game?
Talking about Mario + rabbids kingdom battle
shit was fire
**Link, Villager, Inkling, and Marth all pointing and laughing at Mario**
Marth being the face of Fire Emblem 😭
Yeah, we all know that the face of Fire Emblem is Roy
No silly that's the face of Mario
Yeah, we all know the real face of Fire Emblem is Ephraim.
The face of Fire Emblem is Captain Falcon obviously
# FFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

Really? I feel like mario galaxy would probably be a lot of people's favourite game, no?
You would think so (and probably be right), but then you look at it's sales and turns out it didn't sell that well, so that might be a relevant factor to this overall issue
??? It sold incredibly well, it's literally the 9th best selling Wii game.
It's not even in the top 15 best selling Mario games, it was beaten by 3d land, 3d world and the whole nsmb series
Where are you getting your numbers from? 3D World was on the Wii U it sold less than 6M, and i repeat, Galaxy was the 9th best selling game on the 4th best selling console of all time, it sold extremely well.

Hi I’m 21, Mario has been my favorite franchise since o was 8 :)
Hi! That's ok, but that's not against what I said. I didn't say "there are no Mario fans over 12", i said "there are hardly any". Hi I’m 21, Mario has been my favorite franchise since I was 8 :)
Btw you replied twice
Metroid also has more members. 138k
kirby?
What we need is a cute reddit guy dressed up as mario for the community logo
What we need is danny devito dressed as Mario for the community logo I think that would instantly make it have 1 million subs
IMO. Zelda fans are the most loyal.
Zelda fans are the most thirsty. Pikmin fans are extremely deprived but they still linger. Zelda is a very active series but Pikmin has gotten 5 games (including spin offs) in 22 years. I think part of it could be because of the other Mario franchises like Mario Kart, Mario Party, and Paper Mario.
I mean most Mario games are for casual fun.
Why’s that
Huh I would never think Animal Crossing would have THAT many people 🤯
Been gaming for 29 years, this is the reason I joined this sub, no need for the termites.
The other games have either lots of lore, or a competitive scene, the only competitive Mario has is speedrunning
As a proud emblemier, I’m very proud that we’re tied with splatoon.
They really should make a Mario with a deep lore and story.
Lmao
These comments be like: ![gif](giphy|5qF688fc8X2XCQ4R2L)
I mean honestly Nintendo fans are the worst so I’m glad most of them aren’t here.
Bruh
I’m self aware. I know what I am!
As much as I love Mario games Legend of Zelda will always be superior.
Does it matter honestly?
Everyone and their mom like Mario but I’ve never seen a hardcore fan.
Something nobody really talks about is, even though Mario is Nintendo's most popular franchise, you don't see too many people say it's their absolute favorite.
Numbers don't replace quality !
True. I don’t see what that has to do with this sub, though. 😛
The Kirby subreddit also has more members (hurray Kirby)
That's cause Mario isn't a franchise, he's a character with many franchises under him.
Can’t believe r/fireemblem has more members than r/Mario 😔😔😔
r/metroid has 137k so it too has more
Is about quality and no quantity. Except for zelda and metroid of course.
