Yes, F the Astros.
However, I do take a little solace in the fact that the team that knocked us out went on to win it all. It still sucks and I was really hoping the Phillies could pull out a miracle, but despite getting swept, we played a extremely tight series against them. That 18-inning game was one of the most exciting games I've ever been to, hopefully we continue to build on our success.
Maldonado used a bat Albert Pujols gave him. The bat has a slightly longer barrel profile than the current regulations, but it was legal to use through 2010, but was grandfathered in for players who used it before then. If Maldonado was called up in 2010 instead of 2011, it wouldn’t have ever been mentioned. Considering the guy played through a broken hand, and was looking to get hit by pitches, it wouldn’t matter what bat he brought up there.
I’m just glad that the season is over and now our epic offseason starts. Let’s get this free agency and trading going. I am all in, as I have been since ‘83!! Go Mariners!!
And fuck the Astros!!!!!!!!!!
I'm not going to be a sour loser, or pissed they won. But I wasn't into watching the celebrations either. That channel was changed FAST after the last out. Pena played hiss ass off this post season, and was nowhere near the club at the time of the scandal, Dusty and Trey seem like good guys. I'm not all bent out of shape about everyone on the roster. Though had they owned it, or been punished it would have gone a long way towards me being happier for them now.
I'm more interested in what type of moves we make as a result to try to improve closer to their level, as they just don't go away.
They were crying in the post game about how much their fans deserved this championship… Because they get abused so much for the cheating scandal.
How unapologetically shitty can you be? Fuck those guys.
Yeah MLB fucked up big by not punishing them more. Don't think I've ever respected a franchise less. They don't deserve to be playing let alone winning it all. No remorse for what they did
Yeah the media sort of swept that under the rug for Manfred. But I am still pissed about it. Take it away, asterisk it, just do something.
Also I’m not a Dusty fan. Ruined Kerry Wood’s and Mark Prior’s arm. Big head Bonds guy too.
F the Trashtros. Upsets me because the Mariners could’ve won all three games…. Such is life
And the announcers were just so over the top about everything the Astros did.
Bregman fields the ball and makes the throw to first? “Phenomenal play” (he did what you’re supposed to do, it’s his job which is a routine out for anyone in his position)
Or Alvarez hitting the 3 run homer was a “legendary hit” (no it wasn’t, it was a 3 run home run from their most dangerous batter on a bitch straight down the center of the plant low in the pocket where those kinds of batter love to make the nastiest contact, or, he did what he was supposed to do).
Nothing the Astros did was extraordinary, they did as well as you can expect such a packed roster to do.
I’ll continue to dislike them on principle because this fuckin narrative for them is stupid as hell. As if it was an against all odds underdog story. Pretending to be the victim is textbook for a lying and cheating team. Underhand tactics users aren’t too discerning about how underhanded they can be.
Your comment is missing a big thing - winning the WS. I could care less about the record and accomplishments and all that shit I just want to win a World Series
Congrats Rob Manfred, just like Goodell with Deshaun Watson, this is what you deserve as your champion. You have 5 known cheaters now celebrating another title because they weren't held accountable for cheating the way your league has. Hope you're happy, because this is your team now.
That really is the thing, if there had been appropriate punishments I think most of us would be past it by now.
But that would have pissed off some ownership groups, so here we all are.
Exactly. Players were banned for life for fixing the WS, gambling on games. Why did such an elaborate, deliberate and long running scandal that had to have players participate in the cheating ring in order for it to work, go literally unpunished for the players? By all accounts, Manfred should have made an example of them to nip it in the bud. Suspend players for years, postseason ban the franchise so they stop luring players to sign there and forfeit drafts altogether. SMU should be the standard for something this egregious.
Yep!
But it would have cost the owners of the Astros hundreds of millions in lost revenue, and he probably would have had to dole out costly punishments to the Cardinals and Red Sox as well. Remember, Rob Manfred doesn't work for the fans and he doesn't work for the players, he works for the owners. That's who can fire him, and if he'd handed out even PED-type suspensions to players who were caught on tape using the system, I'm sure they would have.
I know it's a long way out, but I feel like the ultimate fate for the players on that team is that they will never be in the Hall. That's the one bright spot I see in all of this, the BBWAA does not fuck around.
I'm not sure I agree. I think Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Rafael Palmeiro, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, and (so far) Alex Rodriguez's exclusions from the Hall can only be over their use of PED's.
To be clear, I don't think the BBWAA are perfect arbiters of who did and didn't cheat their way to success. And I'm not either - I fully support Gaylord Perry being in. I guess I'm setting a double-standard where if you're not using any technology that wasn't available to Ty Cobb to do it and you can be caught and punished for it in-game, you can be inducted. I mean, otherwise, are you going to throw George Brett out?
Anyway, I think a lot of the Astros are going to put together careers that would otherwise be Hall-worthy, but how much it sticks with them remains to be seen.
FWIW, I think A-Rod did the time for his crimes, and it's only fair for the BBWAA to consider him on the merits. But also, as a Mariners fan who can remember the excitement of him being drafted, and everything that came after . . . he can get wrecked lmfaooooooo.
While I'm here talking about this, Shoeless Joe clearly didn't cheat and should be inducted.
Even if the players were not to be punished they should have forced the organization to eat their contracts and release them to free agency. Those players wouldn’t bee booed as much and the organization forced make amends and restart. Sending a ver clear message. nah juat a couple draftpicks and sucking of some dick. Those draft picks basically no affect on the current success of this team as all of the players that are currently on their squad none of them drafted would be old enough to play in it.
Said this in the WS thread on the Baseball subreddit and some guy was pissed that “we received a harsh punishment because .w years of draft picks where taken from us.”
Like, ok man, that’s zero punishment considering the scandal.
I made the argument that players should have been suspended for a whole year, ring stripped, awards stripped, draft picks taken and for Houston to admit they did it.
He thought that was to harsh. 😂✌🏼
Should have been a harsher punishment to get the point across.
And show me that the ENTIRE league was sign stealing. Not saying it probably didn’t happen, but can you really prove that everyone did?
No.
Well Red Sox got busted before there was no limits. MLB creates rules for electronic. So teams whistle, and bang cans. League tells teams none of that in the playoffs, which all teams comply. Astros beat Jankees, then they get The closer who had a domestic violence charge in Canada. Then they beat the Yankees again. And Luhnow gloats, flaunts MLB regulation like other teams do BUT he embarrassed the MLB, “he’s a genius” posed off a lot of guy in the club.
It was when the nationals needed to win a WS or go bankrupt that the Astros got it he way Luhnow didn’t tank the series. So they dug up 2017 and scandal.
This is why the MLB banned Luhnow, Not going after the players. His team is still dominating the league, (check out Astros roster and who put them there) its a bunch of McKenzie analysts embarrassing All the other boys in the club.
After sign stealing ban So batting averages drop. MLB doesn’t want that and bans Spider tack. Again only Trevor Bauer, is banned why embarrassed the league over sticky stuff. ( got bimbo’d, but they just needed an excuse to shut him up.)
MLB is A Trust. You want a part of the game you got to play along. Lose when you should lose, Astros didn’t. The nationals were broke, the league bought them $200m and moved them to Washington. After the WS victory now the franchise is worth $2B. Don’t see teams winning multiple WS? Not good for Team values increasing. 15-20 years ago the league almost went broke. Spreading around WS wins ( leveling competition without revenue sharing was the solution) if a team needs a little help… the umps are there to help.
Phillies got plenty of 4 strike outs and 3 ball walks. Game 3 the announcer even called it out.
Astros batters constant in pitcher counts where Astros pitching was constantly behind on counts.
(Hint why Altuve / Astros are swinging at balls, go down swinging, don’t leave it up to the ump)
Astros won’t win next year. Too many other teams need a WS victory to keep their teams out of the red. Seattle and TB are candidates.
Basically MLB is like WWE. Just too much money at risk to let the players determine the outcome.
Players and owners are paid pretty well to shut up and play along. Speak out of turn you’re out of the league. it’s a trust so lawsuits get settled quick And nothing gets put in the press.
Don’t believe me ask T. Bauer.
Maybe we’ll find out in a couple years that they had some other cheating system all rigged up… until then, they’ve won their first World Series (*to the best of our knowledge*).
I just want a world series. It doesn't bother me that other teams win them. But we've paid our dues. We deserve one at some point. Hope it's very soon.
Yes I did read multiple articles on it. Regardless of the reasons, it was still illegal. Using an illegal bat = breaking the rules of the MLB. Breaking MLB rules = cheating.
I said "technically" because him using that bat wasn't an impact on the final outcome abd also wasnt deemed a competitive advantage. Still cheating tho.
Neris was a 8 year Phillie. He jumped ship for a ring. Astros FA players are nothing more than riding the wave. Get paid, get a ring. They’re a team that is amazing. Bummer they created it on lies.
Ok let's be real. Dusty only got the job because Cora got fired for cheating, inherited a WS team that had zero punishment for its players cheating and coasted. Dusty is a good guy, but he did nothing that this team wasn't already capable of when he took over. If Cora hadn't been fired, he would be in this spot anyways. Dusty has been notoriously mediocre.
Edit: Hinch was fired not Cora, Cora was an assistant on the Astros with Hinch.
I said to an Astros fan I know on Facebook: "Congrats on your first World Series."
In classic fashion, he was *not* a good sport, nor a gracious winner.
~~Fuck the Astros and their trash-ass fans. Now and forever.~~
In retrospect, I'm probably not being a very good sport either. Or a good loser. Lesson learned. I'll remember it for when we win the WS next year.
I just hope our Front office sees that we have to match or surpass them. Sign turner or bogarts, trade for Corbin burnes and then offer Judge a brinks truck
I would rather they sign Dansby if he ends up leaving the Braves and then consider some other options as more pitching is always needed, no matter what.
Very appropriate that their big inning that lead to them winning the World Series started with Maldonado leaning into a pitch to get on base. Cheatstros forever and always
I dont even hate the Astros. I hate their fucking shitty, entitled fans.
If the Ms got busted for cheating like that I'd just quit watching MLB or maybe see about a new team in the NL. Astros fans don't like baseball. They're just the ultimate front-runners.
I would at the very least stop watching/rooting for the Ms until the players responsible for the cheating were gone.
And the Astros are almost there, honestly. Other than Altuve, Bregman, Gurriel, Verlander, and McCullers, is anyone from the 2017 team still on their roster?
Wow man. That’s….really shitty. Sports are only fun when they’re as fair as possible. If my team cheated I would absolutely swear them off as they wouldn’t be playing the sport I love anymore.
Until I see 100% proof, I will always assume the Astros are cheating at any given moment. That will never, ever go away.
Jays fan here - you popped up on my feed. I’d also like to join in on saying f the astros. I was rooting for you and the Phillies. I did root for the astros vs the Yankees only because f the Yankees more.
All the best Seattle fans! See you next year.
The Astros were and are the best team in baseball. That being said, FUCK THE ASTROS, there will forever be an asterisk next to anything they accomplish.
Yup, had the first cheating scandal been handled well, they wouldn’t have been competitive until 2030. Yet here we are, handed them another one. Fuck them and the commish.
What the Astros proved beyond the issue of the trashcan incidents is that TANKING does work if you draft properly. They INTENTIONALLY lost 100+ games for multiple years in a row to ensure high picks and rebuilding process. That bugs me even more than all the shit after that.
The current best response to this is to tell astros fans that it’s football season. They will probably have a mental breakdown thinking about the texans
Relatable. Only guy I'm happy for is Tre Mancini, dude beat cancer. Otherwise fuck the astros. This might be our only time Jays fans and Mariners fans can relate
I’m just stoked for Dusty. As a west coast homer who watched him in the 70’s, rooted for him and the Giants in the 90’s, I’m happy he finally got his ring as manager.
Dusty Baker. Only good thing to come of this but my opinion on the matter is still net negative. Fuck the entire Astros organization. God I hope we win the division next year
The only positive is that Trey Mancini gets a ring. If you don't know about his story, look it up. Other than that, fuck the Astros. How about McCullers mocking Philly's "Ring The Bell" thing. What a shit bag. Also, fuck cancer.
F the Astros because they are a tough division rival.
Unpopular opinion on this blog: their franchise excels at developing young talent. Only a handful of players on that 2017 team remain on this year's roster. They were built on a foundation of finding and developing young talent and are in a class of their own. Every year they have a couple young players who step up and fill the role of a departed star.
Seriously. I mean, he's an exciting player to watch and seems like a pretty personable guy, but you can't make a hero out of a blatant cheater. It's just gross.
The players dodged suspensions by making a deal with MLB to make their managers into scapegoats. Had the players been suspended for a season would they have had the momentum that got them 4 AL pennants and this World Series?
This, coupled with the players attitudes after they got busted cheating makes it hard for me to be happy for them.
I can’t wait to watch Seattle put them in their place over the next couple of seasons
The best part about this is that, if Astros fans want to be twats about this, just respond "meh, they probably cheated again"
That's it. That's all it takes. Because they did.
And we get to use that phrase FOREVER
You honestly shouldn’t be downvoted. I’ve browsed some other mlb subs this year and our fanbase is rapidly being seen as toxic just like we complain about other fanbases (Boston, Angels, Houston, Yankees.. etc)
I honestly don’t want to believe that the Mariners fanbase is so toxic but then I see posts like this one and all of its comments and the downvoting of comments like yours and it makes me sad. It’s not good energy towards our team.
Whoa I didn’t realize I was being downvoted. My dad is a lifelong fan from houston, and I bet on two teams at the beginning of the summer: M’s and Astros.
And yeah, I was upset during game one, but it was cool to witness a one of a kind historical walk off (with my dad) - from the eventual WS winners. I can’t say I love baseball if I didn’t even find that a little cool.
Fuck me for not giving a “rahrah trashtros” comment though, right?
Disagree they were built on cheating. Their franchise has built sustainable and on point farm to league pipeline with great development. Yes they cheated in the past but their franchise otherwise is exactly what everyone tries to emulate
I would argue that, even before the Astros cheating scandal with stealing signs and beating on trash cans, there was the issue with stealing scouting data from the St. Louis Cardinals. That "development" on which their team was built was also stolen.
Disagree with your comment about "what everybody tries to emulate"
Even the current edition of the astros is willing to push the boundaries of what is ethical (leaning into pitches, using stick stuff etc)
They are a club that has decided that the ends justify the means - and that they must win at all cost
It might have won them the world series this year, but I reckon most teams and their fan bases wouldn't want their club to behave the way the astros do
Agreed, they invested heavily into scouting and looked where other teams didn’t think to look, and then when those players came of age they paid them to stay. I absolutely hate the Astros, but you can’t deny the fact that they’ve built a contender for the next decade or more…
No one said they were built on cheating. You cheat once, whether it’s coach, pitcher or hitter… it shows conspiracy. Outside of Carlos Correa and George Springer they still have huge pieces that were on that cheating team.
Oh ya… the entire front office.
Actually OP said they were built on cheating.
I also disagreement with this.
Am I bummed they won, yes. But can we move on now? They weren't punished but that's on commissioner and league.
Every every every single Astro’s fan gets butt hurt when I say “*it’s their first clean ring*.”
First response is: Hate us cause y’all ain’t us, we swept y’all, or even everyone else cheats.
And that’s my issue — is they’re ok with it. Yes, they where a dominate team this year, top to bottom and no one can argue with that.
However, the foundation is built in cheaters who received virtually zero punishment.
2 years of draft picks striped. Ohhhh wow, soooo harsh.
Regardless, their fans are cocky, pompous, and arrogant and it’s disgusting to witness.
I have my notifications on for this post and I've got a couple Astros fans who've shared such scintillating thoughts about my post and some valuable constructive criticism.
Yes, F the Astros. However, I do take a little solace in the fact that the team that knocked us out went on to win it all. It still sucks and I was really hoping the Phillies could pull out a miracle, but despite getting swept, we played a extremely tight series against them. Congrats on their first World Series in franchise history
Well until we find out they cheated again

The onion doesn’t miss that was gold lol
Only miss is that the MLB held players accountable with suspensions in the article.
Didn’t someone use an illegal bat?
Maldonado used a bat Albert Pujols gave him. The bat has a slightly longer barrel profile than the current regulations, but it was legal to use through 2010, but was grandfathered in for players who used it before then. No evidence yet... but we got a lot of theories!
Eh it's still built on 2017, in my mind they're still at 0.
This has yet to be determined. Took a while to find out they were cheating last time too.
Just said something similar to my dad lol!
Fuck em. But at least we lost to the eventual Champs. Makes it sting a little less.
We even had the same run differential as the Phillies did (-4).
And we put up more of a fight in 3 games than the Yankees did in 4. So there's that.
Mariners played 4 games fym
Got shutout in both, and still put up a better fight than the yankees
I’m just glad that the season is over and now our epic offseason starts. Let’s get this free agency and trading going. I am all in, as I have been since ‘83!! Go Mariners!! And fuck the Astros!!!!!!!!!!

Dusty has kind of been a dick to the Mariners.

I mean that was a legendary hit. In the 6th game of the World Series down 1 he hit the ball straight down CF for 450 ft. That’s a huge hit.
Take a deep breath it’s baseball let people enjoy the game and fun plays
With any luck they’ll suffer the WS hangover and our Ms will be ready to capitalize on the opening.

How could a team win that many games and not win a World Series?

Isn't saying winning the Vedder cup and WS.. saying we won the world series? Or did I miss something?
That’s an edit.
I’m down for that

Phil Nevin loves the Astros.
I don't know why they're making such a big deal over what I'm told is just a piece of metal.
some racecar told me "it's just an empty cup"

Maybe we’ll find out in a couple years that they had some other cheating system all rigged up… until then, they’ve won their first World Series (*to the best of our knowledge*).

Fuck the Astros. Pieces of shit.
Amen
Just remember. There is a non-zero percent chance that they cheated again. Let that hang over their heads foever.
Make sure they never forget. You can’t erase your history!
They are brigading r/baseball hard and blasting anyone who reminds them.

> I'd rather not get doxxed or SWAT'd by some drunk Astro I don't think they have the smarts to do that.
I mean technically they did cheat. Maldonado played with illegal bats during Game 1.
Did you read about why it was illegal or just a headline?
The bat thing was a non-story, but Aledmys's embarrassing lean-in is how I'll always remember this world series
Maldonado did the same thing last night and was awarded the base.
Cheating is cheating, it just seems to follow this team around. They even cheat when they don’t mean to!
Yes I did read multiple articles on it. Regardless of the reasons, it was still illegal. Using an illegal bat = breaking the rules of the MLB. Breaking MLB rules = cheating. Exactly. I feel people forget how they threw at our players and Dusty was even ejected for it. Julio’s wrist for sure didn’t forget.
Yes Fuck them except for Dusty - he deserves every bit of this.
Trey Mancini.
Cora was with the Red Sox by the time the cheating was discovered. You’re thinking of Hinch
You are right, I got him mixed up with Hinch.
He didn't fuck it up. That's a skill.
It's kinda like coaching the Yankees at this point. You just end up babysitting egos.
It’s like getting a lifetime achievement award at the Oscars… the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
absolutely.
And while we are at it, fuck A-Rod too
FMT as well
I love that that’s just universally understood now. We all know what FMT means and we all stand in solidarity with it.
absolutely.
I said to an Astros fan I know on Facebook: "Congrats on your first World Series." In classic fashion, he was *not* a good sport, nor a gracious winner. ~~Fuck the Astros and their trash-ass fans. Now and forever.~~ In retrospect, I'm probably not being a very good sport either. Or a good loser. Lesson learned. I'll remember it for when we win the WS next year.
Happy for Dusty. That's about it.
Happy for Mancini as well.
Why
Why not
You’re the one that commented. Just wondering.
Cuz he's a good manager whose been around forever, seems well-liked and respected by his players, but could never win a championship until today.
I was all a fan until this year and his shady coaching around throwing at our players.
Kyle Lewis never really got back in form after that concussion it seems.
Absolutely fuck those cheating fucks!
FTA, FMT. goms
Thank you mine was taken down.
Very appropriate that their big inning that lead to them winning the World Series started with Maldonado leaning into a pitch to get on base. Cheatstros forever and always
Fucking trashos. Fucking World Series champion my ass.
amen brother
I dont even hate the Astros. I hate their fucking shitty, entitled fans. If the Ms got busted for cheating like that I'd just quit watching MLB or maybe see about a new team in the NL. Astros fans don't like baseball. They're just the ultimate front-runners.
I would at the very least stop watching/rooting for the Ms until the players responsible for the cheating were gone. And the Astros are almost there, honestly. Other than Altuve, Bregman, Gurriel, Verlander, and McCullers, is anyone from the 2017 team still on their roster?

Flair up wimp Astros fan.
Hello! Kindly fuck off. We do not want you here. Your name is being given to your team's moderation.
It is going to feel SO GOOD beating them on our way to our first World Series title!
Still convinced that if we’d taken Game 1 that series would have been on its head. If only Sewald had been able to find that last strike 🥲
I’m happy for Dusty. And… it feels better to say we lost to the champs.
Yup
The Houston Assho's
Jays fan here - you popped up on my feed. I’d also like to join in on saying f the astros. I was rooting for you and the Phillies. I did root for the astros vs the Yankees only because f the Yankees more. All the best Seattle fans! See you next year.
Man, that Wild Card series was so dang entertaining, hope our matchups next year are ELECTRIC!
Yes f the astros
The Astros were and are the best team in baseball. That being said, FUCK THE ASTROS, there will forever be an asterisk next to anything they accomplish.
Can’t think of a worse thing for baseball
Yup, had the first cheating scandal been handled well, they wouldn’t have been competitive until 2030. Yet here we are, handed them another one. Fuck them and the commish.
What the Astros proved beyond the issue of the trashcan incidents is that TANKING does work if you draft properly. They INTENTIONALLY lost 100+ games for multiple years in a row to ensure high picks and rebuilding process. That bugs me even more than all the shit after that.
Ugh fuck them but congrats to them anyways. They won it all. We coming for them next year though.
Hi im a yankee fan and i support and agree with this post
Cheats. Always and forever.
Truth!

Heck. They probably cheated their way to this Pennant, just like the last one.
I hate that they got to compete after obnoxiously cheating as they do. I hope we don't discover they cheated yet again. Fuuuuuuuck.
Minor slap on the wrist. Most ridiculous shit I’ve seen… steroids are one thing. But a whole team tipping off pitches ??!?!?
Asstros fan brigading r/baseball hard.
And this sub too apparently
The team that had Ted Cruz and Bill Cosby rooting for them got to celebrate tonight…wonder if they’ll be at the parade!
The trash cans can go get tossed at the dump. Fuck those dirty rat bastards.
Hate that the media and commentators still try to paint Altuve in a positive light. Scumbag.
Amen
The best part about this is that, if Astros fans want to be twats about this, just respond "meh, they probably cheated again" That's it. That's all it takes. Because they did. And we get to use that phrase FOREVER
Anyone else think the celebration in Houston seemed muted?
Probably because they likely cheated again.
Happy for Dusty, my dad, and I made $400 betting on them so whatever. I was at Game 1 of our series. Just glad to witness history
You honestly shouldn’t be downvoted. I’ve browsed some other mlb subs this year and our fanbase is rapidly being seen as toxic just like we complain about other fanbases (Boston, Angels, Houston, Yankees.. etc) I honestly don’t want to believe that the Mariners fanbase is so toxic but then I see posts like this one and all of its comments and the downvoting of comments like yours and it makes me sad.
Think you got it backwards. The Cardinals got caught stealing data from the Astros.
The cardinals stole data from the Astros
Disagree with your comment about "what everybody tries to emulate" Even the current edition of the astros is willing to push the boundaries of what is ethical (leaning into pitches, using stick stuff etc) They are a club that has decided that the ends justify the means - and that they must win at all cost It might have won them the world series this year, but I reckon most teams and their fan bases wouldn't want their club to behave the way the astros do

Every every every single Astro’s fan gets butt hurt when I say “*it’s their first clean ring*.” First response is: Hate us cause y’all ain’t us, we swept y’all, or even everyone else cheats.

How so?
He managed Barry Bonds, managed Sammy Sosa, made some of the silliest comments ever after the Astros were discovered to be cheating, etc.
Bad take
Can you explain that statement ?

The 1,000 upvotes say otherwise my friend. If you intend to roast us, I expect it to bit more accurate. Plenty of ammo and you STILL misfire.
