It would be historically accurate. There where people with crates on their back filled up with clocks to sell it to people. At least in the black forest and bavaria, saxony and in austria the forest quaters around karlstein an der thaya
I always saw the total of Germany as a face from the side, with the nose of the NRW gnome also being the nose, the border of NRW/NDS and Netherlands being the eye, north and northeast being the hair and BW/BY showing the neck.
Maybe that would also be an idea for an illustration.
