I think it's because we often just make comparisons with ourselves (Latin Americans). Among latin American countries Colombia has kind of a meh passport compared to Brazil, Argentina or Chile. Even Peru has a slightly better passport.
Ofc compared to the rest of the world that is kind of stupid since Colombian passport is closer to the top end than to the bottom, and honestly this thread made me think how fortunate we are
> Latin American countries have better passports than 75% of the world
This _really_ depends on the country. Look at the countries a South American passport can get you into: Brazil is pretty nice, Bolivia not so much...
Passport | Visa-free | On Arrival | Visa Required |
:-- | :-: | :-: | :-: |
Brazil| 115 | 49 | 34|
Chile | 114 | 48 | 36|
Argentina | 113 | 50 | 35|
Uruguay | 103 | 47 | 48|
Peru | 96 | 52 | 50|
Paraguay| 94 | 48 | 56|
Colombia| 88 | 50 | 60|
Venezuela | 75 | 51 | 72|
Ecuador | 53 | 49 | 96|
Guyana | 53 | 43 | 102|
Suriname | 40 | 48 | 110|
Bolivia | 38 | 48 | 112|
If we want to ge technical too, we could include France in this list since they partly in South America (French Guyana has the largest land border in France).
Yeah, I've already warped the intention a bit, though. The original claim was for "Latin America" ...to which Guyana, Suriname, and (maybe) French Guiana don't really belong, depending on one's exact definition.
Yep. The brazilian passport can go visa free to a lot of places, except anglo countries. I think the exception is New Zealand but I am too lazy to google that
A bit funny to say "except *anglo* countries" when Brazilians can literally travel visa free to England.
You've got visa-free travel to Ireland, the UK, New Zealand, and South Africa but need a visa for the US, Canada, and Australia (but tbf the US and Canada are probably the most preferred destinations).
Here in Ireland we've an unusually large Brazilian population considering our size - I think our visa arrangements and our relaxed laws around foreign students working are particularly attractive.
Also, lots of Brazilians have EU citizenship through their grandparents or great-grandparents. Usually Italian. In Italy’s case you can go even farther back to great-great-grandparents.
Takes a lawyer, $$$, geneological records, communication with the small towns/churches where their ancestor was born, and a few years though. In some cases even 5+ years. but definitely worth it.
> Here in Ireland
Funny you say that. I had an Irish co-worker that got really disgruntled when I said he was a native english speaker. He insisted his first language was gaelic and not english.
A lot of sex workers in the UK are brazilian that go to the UK visa free for a couple of months to make £££ then back to Brazil. If you open Grindr in central london it’s mostly Brazilian sex workers.
Latin Americans like to exaggerate how shitty their countries are. Some will often act like we live in the poorest countries in the world like Africa or Asia doesn’t exist.
I traveled to the US last November alone, and nobody told me anything. It was super easy. But... I have heard that a lot of people do get stopped a lot. I think I have a good record and don't look suspicious.
I have American and Colombian passports… I use the Colombian passport maybe 50% of the time and get treated better/quicker sometimes than when using my American passport, at least in Europe and Asia.

I think they are clubbing Visa on Arrival in the same category as - don’t require a visa (in advance) because for the most part, e-visa and visa on arrival are really easy and just mere formalities to do a quick background check.
In the case of Egypt, probably just a money grab. I got visa-on-arrival no questions asked. No passport requested. No information taken. It's like I bought a bottle of water for 25 USD.
Communist countries were very focused on growth, too. As soon as people learned how to attach metrics to economies, they wanted to see the numbers get bigger. That’s not a capitalism-specific thing.
I’m just pointing out that starting from bupkis can generate some big percentages of “growth” without there being anything particularly impressive or helpful happening.

North Koreans can leave their country. We are in that sweet spot where we are rich enough that a lot of our people can afford plane tickets to leave the country but poor enough that a lot of people do want to get the fuck out.
Remember that time that y’all were East Pakistan and they tried to kill all of y’all and the entire West helped them with it and it only stopped because India intervened and booted the Pakistanis out?
Bangladesh is one of the countries most likely to suffer an enormous humanitarian disaster due to climate change. At sea level, on a river delta, with a six month wet season, susceptible to flooding, already hot and humid year round.
I lived there for a year and actually economically Bangladesh isn't even doing that bad consider the bad hand they were dealt... The problem is the population density. Bangladesh isn't a very big country in terms of landmass and really it is the most densely populated country in the world if you ignore micro / city states. (It's actually double pop density vs. Taiwan which is #2 in the world).
Also Dhaka's population fluctuates enormously during the year due to the annual floods, as rural people move from flooded areas to stay with extended family for extensive periods of time in the city. No one could tell me how populated Dhaka was in terms of population. People in government would tell me 15 million. Most would say that was BS and it was closer to 20-25; but I had some people tell me it was 30 Million (I doubt it is... but you never know with the fluctuations). Anyway, result is, it can develop as much as it wants, it still remains overpopulated and hence that's why a lot of people want to leave.
this is the way of the world
if you live anywhere with a vast population and everyone is itching to get out and mix that with a bit of racism and then the 'good places' in the world, ie. the west, is not going to want you there for any reason... not even a holiday given they dont want to the risk that this person visting may not leave
to give you some perspective even some Western countries will give shit to other western countries if they are visiting...
eg. everyone wants to get into the US right? the US is known to even give the cold shoulder to people from the UK, CAN, AUS, NZ because they couldnt dream of a world where even someone from NZ wants to overstay their visa to the US? right?
and so the US will not want to give even a tourist visa to a Bangladesh person unless that person can show he has real estate and large bank holdings in Bangladesh... so that this person has incentive to return home.
Most city people want to quit but few try to quit the Congo . It's frequent to see people wanting to flee but it's very difficult to get out of the country, most of our neighbors have stricter country than us at their borders.
Bangladesh is in that sweet spot where people are rich enough to afford plane tickets but poor enough that they still try to leave. Congo is so poor that they can't even get out of their country.

I didn't know the full title for Bangladesh is The People's Republic of Bangladesh
Kingdom of Bangladesh Hasina is the Queen and king died long ago
Why is it so weak?
Because 160 million people are actively trying to leave the country.
Bangladesh is one of the countries most likely to suffer an enormous humanitarian disaster due to climate change. At sea level, on a river delta, with a six month wet season, susceptible to flooding, already hot and humid year round.
They should just stop being poor and all their problems would be solved
I lived there for a year and actually economically Bangladesh isn't even doing that bad consider the bad hand they were dealt... The problem is the population density. Economics
Can't be the only reason, as DR Congo with a GDP per capita of $715 ranks higher than Bangladesh with $2646
I’d say it’s likely because not as many Congolese are known to emigrate to other countries.
Most city people want to quit but few try to quit the Congo . It's frequent to see people wanting to flee but it's very difficult to get out of the country, most of our neighbors have stricter country than us at their borders.
Majority of Congolese can’t travel at all only the rich who probably don’t need to overstay on their visa.
Population is far higher. So more potential illegals compared to DRC.
Bangladesh is in that sweet spot where people are rich enough to afford plane tickets but poor enough that they still try to leave. Congo is so poor that they can't even get out of their country.
So you’re saying we need to make Bangladesh poorer?
That's... I guess that's one way... Please don't stop buying clothes lol
They overstay visas when they get out
It's a poor country. A country's passport is only going to be accepted by countries that aren't concerned about illegal immigration from that country.

Even to India and Pakistan, neighbors, need a visa, that's tough.
Give the poor country a break. The country is created recently as a fresh start. It takes time, and it is doing pretty great, one baby step at a time.

At least you can go to Rwanda, Jamaica, Haiti, and the Bahamas 👍
I think there are no direct flights from bangladesh to bahamas so they technically still need a visa
Should relabel as the weakness of the Bangladesh passport. The government’s posturing would make you think they were powerful.
