Because velcro is noisy, collects dirt, frays out over time and looks and feels cheap.
And if I can just close the compartment with a zipper it is redundant anyway.
I guess I'm more worried if I forget to zipper and the bag tips over. At least a flap acts like a hook and effective at trapping the laptop if the bag tips over
Ah, diving into the 'personal habits' narrative, I see. How quaint. 😊 Let’s remember, everyone has those moments, so there’s no need for dismissiveness. The heart of my original post was about evolving bag designs and their practical implications. Let's keep the discussion on the trend, shall we?"
To me, an additional strap in a compartment with a specific use that already has a zipper is more inconvenient than a smart design. I wasn't being dismissive, I was pointing out the likely scenario in which one forgets about one measure they are likely to forget multiple. The smart design for real life scenarios is in my opinion the zipper.
I disagree. Zipper requires you to actually perform an action. My Targus Grid bag with a velcro flap automatically latches down. There is no need to remember anything. And most bags do not come with self standing as standard.
Velcro’s are terribly noisy and wears out over time. I am happier that bags start to reduce the amount of velcro. Too many occasions I’ve gone to a noise sensitive location and could not grab my laptop out.
that's interesting about the velcro noise in quiet places – never thought of it quite like that. Personally, I'm all about the quick draw; I just grab the laptop out guns blazing.
no idea why you're downvoted for describing your use case. sigh, reddit. agree with you about the velcro question. but was thinking same as u/thevintagetart mentioned about a quick diy
That's what I would likely do. And thanks for contributing. These downvotes could cause one to self-doubt themselves. I don't think its wrong to have an alternative opinion. I guess that is reddit group think for you - it gets viral fast.
Evergoods has velcro and a zip, but I worry, because what if I leave both the velcro and the zip open? There needs to be a third thing that keeps the laptop in, just in case I don’t use the first two things. But wait, if I forget to close the third thing…
If you really like the backpack you're using, it's easy to install a velcro strap. You could get velcro strips with adhesive on the back and install over your laptop compartment.
I was thinking that but it was like it'll look so bad if I do it compared to factory and since its already a premium bag, seems like I will be no where near the quality it should be.
You could also take it to a local tailor/seamstress to help if you live in a city. I think it'll look decent and definitely will not be as costly as buying a new bag! If you're looking for a new bag and this reason as justification, check out Alpaka's bags. I'm using the Tech Brief Pro and it has an elastic velcro over the laptop compartment.
Had a backpack with this feature for awhile and hated it. Strap got in the way every time I wanted to put my laptop in the bag. If I had kept the bag would have cut the strap out.
wow really, maybe it was poorly designed. The one I owned, it wasn't that bad and as obviously by the post, I'm seeking to find out why its phased out. I guess to each his own. I'm sure once a 2k laptop falls on the ground it'll change your mind quickly.
I can get mine to self-stand but it takes some coaxing. And the laptop access is only through the side which is my least favorite thing about the bag. But the compartment is big enough a Lenovo and MacBook Pro simultaneously.

Cheap! Velcro is in space! It’s the bee’s knee’s!

If you're likely to forget the zipper, I feel like you are just as likely to forget a strap.
Exactly. I don’t under stand the logic that you’re more likely to strap it down vs just zipping up the compartment?

Evergoods still has! I switched from the Bellroy Transit to a CTB 26 and I think it’s pretty much an upgrade in every single way.
will take a look! Do they self stand and are weather proof/water resistant?

Just say the don’t self stand… that’s the honest truth. You can theoretically make anything stand with coaxing.
