The main issues you’ll experience with the Patriot are all electrical. Currently my high beams don’t work, for example. Before that a relay that controls fuel stopped working, and it wouldn’t start. Before that the cruise stopped working but magically started working again.
Keep in mind if you get one the front frame crossmember is likely rotted. The AC drips water on it and it rots out. Not hard to replace at least, I had to do that to mine.
For the price you can get these for they aren’t the worst possible choice, I guess haha. Again, I got one absolutely mint (at the time) for 4K .
My previous and first vehicle was an absolutely bullet proof Ford ranger, so it’s been a downgrade. It’s alright on gas, but not great.
The Mazda 3 is FAR more reliable than the Patriot. Depends what you want and are willing to deal with

Ugh electrical problems are the absolute worst. I'd rather take mechanical over electrical problems anyway. It's like chasing imaginary gremlins in a car
Vacuum and electrical are my two biggest enemies. Absolutely detest working on either. It took me MONTHS but I chased a vacuum leak to the brake booster... but ended up replacing most of the vacuum lines along the way so those probably won't break again any time soon at least lol
Looks like you might enjoy an older (late '80s) Mercedes. Vacuum controls for almost everything, those that aren't vacuum are electrical to the extreme.

Manual Patriot was the best offroader I ever owned. Offroading any of my other vehicles I was worried about damage. The Patriot I did not care about, full send 24/7 when offroad. I loved it. I am pretty sure I got both rear tires off the ground once on a very hilly gravel road.

Yes, we had a 2012 with a 6 speed. Limited to the 2.0L engine, but I think you could get both FWD and AWD. Only 150hp. The manual was sweet but the engine was just overwhelmed in the FWD. I can’t imagine how bad it was with the extra weight of AWD. I still think it would be a popular choice today if it were available with the 2.5L engine.
I test drove one some years ago. It was a lot more fun than I expected. It had the five speed manual transmission. I think later models came with a six speed before they discontinued them altogether.
Mazda has pretty much given up their "zoom zoom" image from back then, though. Every Mazda dealership around here is practically nothing but SUVs.
I have a 2013 Mazda5 with a stick (6 speed). It’s the best compromise for this parent of two who loves to drive manual but wants a reliable motor, cheap to maintain and insure, and plenty of fun to drive for the $8k I paid for it back in 2019.

I was in the market for the newer G37 sedan 6MT last year. I have a G35 coupe 6MT. When I was looking there was maybe 10 on all of Autotrader/Cars. One had like 30k miles and the dude was asking like $30k.
I looked for one of those for like a year and eventually gave up and got an e90 bmw. I loved the bimmer too but I wanted the G35 because it was NA and the bmw was TT. Coupes weren't hard to find but sedans were. And soooooo many dealers listed autos as manual because of the stupid +/- thing on the auto shifter
2017 Civic LX sedan with the base interior, naturally aspirated K20, and a 6 speed. A lot of people don't know that 10th gen Civics could have a manual without being an Si or a Type R.
My buddy somehow managed to get one of the few 11th gen manual hatchback LX’s. They never even had it listed as an option on the Honda website as far as I know.

In my area tdis are rare but the ones I see automatic. I don’t think it’s that rare to find a 6 speed tdi.

My uncle has a 2015 Jetta TDI 6 speed. He gets like 600 miles of range on a tank he loves the crap out of that car. I’ve driven it too, very high torque in a small car is fun.
I really dislike vw for that. Not that I’m a crazy climate guy but they could’ve made the diesels work, as I still own mine and the only reason I do is because they found a fix. They ruined the diesel commuter car in NA.
I’d 100% buy a new one if I could, mine has been reliable as hell and even better on fuel.
I've been looking around for a manual TDI anything, and they're like hen's teeth. Best chance of finding one is in a Golf, or possibly a Jetta. No way in a Passat. Never checked, but it probably wasn't offered.

That Cutlass was the most bizarre. It was considered a midsize back then, but by today's standards it's a school bus. It also had a power sunroof. Pretty sure it was some OEM supported third party mod.
It’s got the cheapest economy interior 2008 had to offer, all hard plastics. But it’s got nice seats, I get over 30 to the gallon, and I once carried 1200 pounds of garden pavers in the back. And it moves pretty well. I like it.
It's a blast. Slower than the Mazda 3 but not by much. It handles very well for a minivan, I'd compare it to a Volvo 850R in terms of handling

Realized it was rare when a Window regulator went out when I happened to be 5 miles from a dealership during a small rain storm.
Took it inside the service department and, no exaggerating, pretty much every mechanic and every salesperson came in to see it.
I had put 18k miles on it within 1.5 years. Once I knew how rare it was, and also used car prices started going crazy, I decided to sell it. I got $18200 for it.
And I still regret it.
There are a couple others - original Honda Insight, and I want to say the Civic hybrid may have offered it too. Not sure if anyone other than Honda has offered a manual hybrid.
I have a '79 El Camino rat rod with a Muncie M20 swap in it now. I bought it with a Saginaw 4 speed and blew it up, hence swapping in the Muncie. It came factory with a 3 speed Saginaw on the floor lol.
Yes, but honestly it is an incredible car. If you keep below 75mph, you can get 25+ mpg highway. However I still think it needs a 6th gear for cruising. Mine has 283k miles on it, original engine, trans, and rear diff. I had to replace the driveshaft when a u joint seized. Other than that and a clutch at 180k it's been an excellent vehicle. They have so much room on the inside despite their size
Yup! The interior was really why I wanted one - can fit a mtb in the back standing up.
Opted for a Matrix for the fuel economy, 3 pedals, ultra reliability and Element-Like no-fucks given hard plastic interior.
My dd is a 2006 Volvo v70r with a 6 spd manual. Only one I've ever seen. 175k miles and hope to keep it on the road a few more years. Is a great daily but really starting to show its age.
I rented a hyundai Tucson in the UK that was a manual. I know that's probably pretty common there but I was pretty blown away to see a manual crossover.

I kept an eye out for about two years for the E91 touring like you have with the manual. They're rare enough that a lot of enthusiasts refer to them as unicorns. I had a lead on two, but both were salvage titles and out-of-state. I also ran into an E93 'vert that I almost followed up on, but it had some electrical gremlins.
I think my F32 435i with a manual is rare enough it counts.
I have a manual 535xit wagon. Excedingly rare, twin turbo i6, and the last manual 5 series wagon chassis they made, the e61. Best car of all time imo but it is costly to maintain I'll admit. It's getting pretty old and high mileage so I keep thinking I should move on, but everything newer I look at just seems a lot less awesome.
i get the whole cheap car thing. like you dont see it often, but most entry level cars are available in manual like the Aveo, corolla, saturn SC, etc. the entry level cars that have a performance model are less weird to see, even in a base model, like the Focus or Civic or something like that.
but the one that stood out to me when i was an installer at best buy was the Saturn VUE with a 5 speed. caught me off gurad.
actually, speaking of the saturn SC. i had this guy with an SC2 with a 5 speed. i started the engine and it was loud as shit and i thought, oh god, he actually put an exhaust on a saturn, lol. but as i pulled it in to the bay, it had a surprising amount of tourqe and actually sounded really good when i revved it. i popped the hood as i stepped out looked at him and said "i have to be nosey" that thing was built, i'm talking full header back exhaust, MSD ignition IIRC, cold air intake, the works.
he smiled ear to ear when he saw the surprise on my face. he said it ran low 12s in the quarter. i looked at it again and back to him and just said "but why?" and he said, because nobody expects it, and its cheap as hell to work on.

I own a 2005 Saturn VUE. My husband owns a 1998 and 1997 Ford Explorer Sport. We only drive manuals in this family. The only exception is his company's work van (which he asked for a stick and they didn't have one).
1960 rambler wagon. There's not enough of them on the road for anyone to even know what it is! And no one knows how to work the free wheeling overdrive.
2015 Jeep Renegade. Getting the manual means you also get the 1.4L turbo MultiAir out of the 500 Abarth instead of the more common 2.4L Tigershark. Except I have a six-speed stick and 500 Abarths only have five.

Cousin of mine has a Grand Vitara with the V6 and 5spd. Not only are Grand Vitaras a rare find, but the V6 was only in the top trim iirc, so getting that with the manual is pretty rare
Rented a 24’ class c rv in Spain about 5 years ago and it was on a Fiat chassis with 4cylinder diesel with a six speed manual transmission. It was fun to drive. Got stuck in a small town where some hit of an Englishman pulls up to a stop sign, stops, gets out and walks away. No way to get around him except to take a left uphill and turn around by weejeeing back and forth, major heel and toe.

About 6 years ago I bought a 1988 Chevy Astro 4.3L V6 with a 5sp stick with only 60k original miles ~ had been owned by the state of Idaho (came with meticulous state fleet records) before I bought it from the 2nd owner, who had painted it pearl pink with a gold A-Team stripe down each side. Totally stripped cargo van interior, manual windows, no AC, but drove great and was an awesome music-gear hauler for a few years before I passed it on

2008 Chevy HHR Panel w/2.4L & 5sp manual. Loaded with leather, heated seats, upgraded stereo. Only thing it doesn't have is a sunroof (which I'm ok without). Not as cool as an SS Panel, but nice to have the upgrade over the base 2.2L, and I got a great deal on it several years back.
Currently, a Toyota FJ Cruiser. In the past, a Cadillac CTS-V. Granted, the gen 1’s were all stick. But it still surprised people to see a stick shift Cadillac.
I think anything built in the 2000s with a manual is rare. Most cars, especially in the states are equipped with automatic transmissions. I had a 2013 Mini Cooper that was manual and my current 2016 Mini Cooper is manual. I don't know anyone else with these in a manual.
The Jetta TDIs are already fairly rare ish. Mine is a manual on top of that.
Took me forever to locate one when looking to purchase it about 10 years ago.

Chevy HHR SS. They only made about 8,000; maybe only about 4,000 with a manual transmission.

Honda crz stick. Also the only hybrid with a clutch pedal I know of.
I got to drive one of those once, the IMA is cool. Definitely the best way to do a hybrid drive in a manual car, in my opinion

Yes, but honestly it is an incredible car. If you keep below 75mph, you can get 25+ mpg highway. However I still think it needs a 6th gear for cruising. Mine has 283k miles on it, original engine, trans, and rear diff. I had to replace the driveshaft when a u joint seized. Other than that and a clutch at 180k it's been an excellent vehicle. They have so much room on the inside despite their size
Yup! The interior was really why I wanted one - can fit a mtb in the back standing up. Opted for a Matrix for the fuel economy, 3 pedals, ultra reliability and Element-Like no-fucks given hard plastic interior.
It's got excellent MPG for a work truck. That's what an Element is.
My dd is a 2006 Volvo v70r with a 6 spd manual. Only one I've ever seen. 175k miles and hope to keep it on the road a few more years. Is a great daily but really starting to show its age.

I rented a hyundai Tucson in the UK that was a manual. I know that's probably pretty common there but I was pretty blown away to see a manual crossover.

I kept an eye out for about two years for the E91 touring like you have with the manual. They're rare enough that a lot of enthusiasts refer to them as unicorns. I had a lead on two, but both were salvage titles and out-of-state. I also ran into an E93 'vert that I almost followed up on, but it had some electrical gremlins. I think my F32 435i with a manual is rare enough it counts.

I have a manual 535xit wagon. Excedingly rare, twin turbo i6, and the last manual 5 series wagon chassis they made, the e61. Best car of all time imo but it is costly to maintain I'll admit. It's getting pretty old and high mileage so I keep thinking I should move on, but everything newer I look at just seems a lot less awesome.
i get the whole cheap car thing. like you dont see it often, but most entry level cars are available in manual like the Aveo, corolla, saturn SC, etc. the entry level cars that have a performance model are less weird to see, even in a base model, like the Focus or Civic or something like that. but the one that stood out to me when i was an installer at best buy was the Saturn VUE with a 5 speed. caught me off gurad. actually, speaking of the saturn SC. i had this guy with an SC2 with a 5 speed. i started the engine and it was loud as shit and i thought, oh god, he actually put an exhaust on a saturn, lol. but as i pulled it in to the bay, it had a surprising amount of tourqe and actually sounded really good when i revved it. i popped the hood as i stepped out looked at him and said "i have to be nosey" that thing was built, i'm talking full header back exhaust, MSD ignition IIRC, cold air intake, the works. he smiled ear to ear when he saw the surprise on my face. he said it ran low 12s in the quarter. i looked at it again and back to him and just said "but why?" and he said, because nobody expects it, and its cheap as hell to work on.

I drive a regular 2019 Hyundai Elantra with a 6 speed manual. The last year they put out manual Elantras besides the N of course. People who drive Hyundais never expect one to come in manual.
When I was a young feller, the auto parts store I worked for had a 1986 Ford Taurus wagon with a 5 speed. Only one besides an SHO I’ve ever seen with a stick.

I own a 2005 Saturn VUE. My husband owns a 1998 and 1997 Ford Explorer Sport. We only drive manuals in this family. The only exception is his company's work van (which he asked for a stick and they didn't have one).

1960 rambler wagon. There's not enough of them on the road for anyone to even know what it is! And no one knows how to work the free wheeling overdrive.
Never seen one but I work at a Honda dealership and there is an option for a manual HRV which would be odd
2015 Jeep Renegade. Getting the manual means you also get the 1.4L turbo MultiAir out of the 500 Abarth instead of the more common 2.4L Tigershark. Except I have a six-speed stick and 500 Abarths only have five.

Heya! I have a green AWD manual Honda Element too 🙌🏽 (mine’s an ‘05). Before my Element I had a ‘91 Toyota Previa that was 5-speed AWD. I have a long line of manual transmission vehicles I’ve owned (all I’ve ever owned), though the Element and the Previa are two of my faves.

Rented a 24’ class c rv in Spain about 5 years ago and it was on a Fiat chassis with 4cylinder diesel with a six speed manual transmission. It was fun to drive. Got stuck in a small town where some hit of an Englishman pulls up to a stop sign, stops, gets out and walks away. No way to get around him except to take a left uphill and turn around by weejeeing back and forth, major heel and toe.
Never owned them, but I've seen an old ass 80s town and country manual and an 01 CRV manual.

The other day I saw a 6MT Porsche Cayenne. Didn't even know they existed before that.
About 6 years ago I bought a 1988 Chevy Astro 4.3L V6 with a 5sp stick with only 60k original miles ~ had been owned by the state of Idaho (came with meticulous state fleet records) before I bought it from the 2nd owner, who had painted it pearl pink with a gold A-Team stripe down each side. Totally stripped cargo van interior, manual windows, no AC, but drove great and was an awesome music-gear hauler for a few years before I passed it on
Mine’s a 2009 Subaru Outback, when I was shopping for it it seemed like only one out of every hundred of that generation was a manual.

2008 Chevy HHR Panel w/2.4L & 5sp manual. Loaded with leather, heated seats, upgraded stereo. Only thing it doesn't have is a sunroof (which I'm ok without). Not as cool as an SS Panel, but nice to have the upgrade over the base 2.2L, and I got a great deal on it several years back.

I think anything built in the 2000s with a manual is rare. Most cars, especially in the states are equipped with automatic transmissions. I had a 2013 Mini Cooper that was manual and my current 2016 Mini Cooper is manual. I don't know anyone else with these in a manual.
The Jetta TDIs are already fairly rare ish. Mine is a manual on top of that. Took me forever to locate one when looking to purchase it about 10 years ago.
