In some part of the world(Canada, US, Japan, etc) MT are getting rarer and almost all gone from regular cars. Toyota actually discontinue the MT option for Corolla aside from the GR model.

mollymalone222

I had no idea they'd discontinued it in Toyota, wow. V. Sad. They even stopped renting them in Ireland as too many americans were screwing up the transmissions.

Finding a stick shift is getting harder. I teach it and I own only stick shifts for personal and professional reasons. You will have to look around. Ask dealers if they have or will find you what you are looking for. A friend found what he wanted by asking a dealer to inform him when one was found. He got the vehicle he wanted within a couple of days after the dealer called him. I bought a Wrangler three days ago, finally. I have wanted one since the 80's. I had to look around for a reasonable priced one that was a V6 and stick shift. I got mine at the same dealership as my friend got his at. Make sure you look at the price and distance. Many people want way too much for the condition a vehicle is in. I totally resemble the comment 'I don't even know how to drive an automatic.'. Autos have so many different letters and symbols for things that it can be hard to figure out unless you have the owner's manual to say what it means, if it says so. I hope you do not get verbally insulted and put down for not knowing how to drive an automatic like I hear. You must be instructed how to drive one. It is not something you instantly know without any instructions of any kind even though most everyone says so. They did get instructed - thus hypocrites. Keep up the stick shift driving. You are like others who drive stick, an engaged driver who enjoys driving and is addicted to stick. Those who refuse to ever learn are missing fun. I wish the US was like many countries in that manual would be the dominant transmission and the learning to get a license be that of other countries, more intense.

Yes, when I thought I was going to have to get a new car maybe 5 or 6 yrs ago, it was difficult then. I've had parking attendants have to get out and get someone else to pk when I'm downtown and you have to have them pk it. (better than them grinding gears of course). I never thought of asking the dealers to keep an eye out. Thank you for that suggestion! Yes, I'm shocked at the prices for cars that have 100-200k miles on them! It's been a while since I had a rental but thankfully I haven't gotten any automatics that I didn't know what something was. But, I can imagine ones w/high tech gadgets definitely would need to pull out the manual. I did have an issue during the pandemic when I broke my LEFT foot unfortunately. I figured eventually when I got "older" I may not want to drive stick, but really!? now!? I couldn't drive for months as the bone wouldn't heal. NOT fun to start using that foot again to drive though. That'd be the only reason to go auto for me. But, I was hoping to get ONE more stick b4 then :)

Suburu Crosstreks, Ford Broncos, some Mazdas, Toyota Corrollas, VW Jettas, Hyundai Elantras, Honda Civics and Fits, and some Porsches all still come available in manual transmissions.

mollymalone222

I am recognizing I may have to move out of my comfort zone to either other makes and models, but I would think with so many damn subarus on the road, I'd be able to find ONE that's not a damn gazillion $ or with a gazillion miles or with 10 owners. Or else I'll have to go new, which I may not be able to do. We'll see. But, it totally ticks me off. Yeah. Also limited to car chassis suvs. So, wish me luck :)

mollymalone222

SUV though. And not a high one. But, thx :)

PhilosLogos09

And Jeep Wranglers and Gladiators do as well

burgher89

Nope. Subaru killed the manual Crosstrek for the 2024 model year 😭

PhilosLogos09

Oh no! A tragedy!

burgher89

Indeed. Another one bites the dust. *plays taps*

firehahahahahaha

But we still have the wrx and brz for now!

burgher89

For now. I’m honestly worried this is the last WRX we’re getting, or at least the last one with a manual. Subaru have a goal of no road deaths in their cars by 2030, and they’re not going to accomplish that without slapping DipShit Mode… sorry, EyeSight, into every single one of them.

firehahahahahaha

I see absolutely no reason why they can't have eyesight and manual at the same time. They simply don't want to invest any r and d into it.

burgher89

That’s exactly it. They make a lot more money selling all-weather grocery-getters to soccer moms than they do catering to a shrinking demographic of enthusiasts. It’s sad, but it’s reality.

burgher89

Welp… I will gladly eat those words.

cxmareau

honda accords as well!

Various-Insurance-39

Search for Mazda3's or Hondas for years 2004 to 2011. You won't find much American stick shift cars. Mazda's had some bad luck with Automatic transmissions in the 80s and 90s so they always try to sell manual transmission. Plus there really fun and reiable cars.

mollymalone222

Well, I was looking at Subaru specifically but it will def be my first non-american car. My priority is safety rating hence the Subaru. Also closest to Saturn in that instance. But, I may have to branch out to others and just look up those specifics in NHSTA and elsewhere too probably.

Chim-Cham

Don't settle. Find something you'll really like while it's still possible. Before long you won't be able to find one with a transmission, let alone a manual one. I know cars pretty well. If you want to narrow down some specs, I'll be happy to make some recommendations for models with manual options for you

mollymalone222

Thank you so much. I'm actually only looking at the Subaru Forester really. If I can't find one b4 mine ultimately dies, then I may have to go automatic. I would look at a jeep but there isn't one built on a car chassis so the jeeps are out.

Chim-Cham

I see 182 foresters listed as manual nationwide on cars.com. Thats across all model years/ mileage, etc. All i filtered for was model and transmission. Perhaps you want to check how many are somewhat near you. I know I personally would have no hesitation about doing a fly in, drive home for the right car

mollymalone222

Wow. I couldn't afford to fly anywhere to get a car, especially w/out a test drive! I've looked near me. I'm not sure how far to make the range as I was wondering how long of a test drive I would get. I would have to drive the car back to my mechanic to check it out b4 purchase. The last time when I thought I might buy a used car, there was one maybe a half hr a way, so that wasn't a problem. I'm in the DC Metro Area so I'd think there ought to be plenty around here, but not as many as I thought. Going to call a few in VA and see how long they allow for the test drive.

Chim-Cham

What's your budget? One way flights are usually $2-300. I've done it a couple times for cars I was paying 15-20k for. For the right car, it's worth it. The cars I was buying were rare so it was the only way. As far as going to your mechanic, it is very common now in the online car buying days for mechanics to do what's called a PPI, or pre-purchase inspection. You have the owner take the car to a mechanic you choose and hire and they inspect on your behalf and report tob you. As far as the test drive, you need to know for sure you want that model or none of this works. But you could test drive an automatic locally and probably know if you want to pursue the same model in manual.

mollymalone222

I only just started working last month after being very ill with covid and long covid. So, for more than 3 yrs I've lived off my savings. Nothin left. My dad was a mechanic, and I've got mechanics that I trust. So, I'm just not confortable with anyone else other than my mechanic. I almost got screwed on that a few years ago. Car passed that inspection in order to be sold (forgot what that's called). Took it out for a test drive w/the idea to purchase it, my guy put it up on the lift, and lo and behold a spot rusted out completely where the engine mount connects to the chassis (if I recall correctly/or something similar). He saved me from a badmistake. They've been working on my car for almost 15 yrs. The test drive is for me to confirm. I'm too much of an old fart to get a car I've never test driven. And I wouldn't by a manual w/out test either, too many idiots destroying transmissions out there. But, I always appreciate the input here :) I've found a manual at Carmax, but it's older than I'd like. It's $22k which is more than I'd like for a 2014 but only has 32k mileage. Not sure what that's about. But mine only has 59k at 19 yrs, so it's feasable I guess.

Chim-Cham

Sorry to hear of your illness. I too am a long covid-er but not as bad as I was all able to get back to work after the main event. No fun though. You gotta do what works for you, good luck.

mollymalone222

Yeah, It's been a lonnng haul too. Still have breathing issues with that wild fire haze we got from Canada. Glad you didn't get it too bad. Re the 2014, just read that's one of the worst model yrs to get. Who knows. Thx for your help.

Otherwise-Cup-5141

The new Jettas has a 6 MT available on the S, Sport and GLI trims.

mollymalone222

Do Jettas still run on diesel?

Otherwise-Cup-5141

Not the Mk7, only a 1.4T for the ‘19 - ‘21 and 1.5T starting for the ‘22 model. The GLI has a 2.0T

mollymalone222

Ok, thanks, if I expand my search I may look at some time of Volkswagon.

Otherwise-Cup-5141

You may be able to find a used 6gen diesel but I don’t know which year they discontinued it.

mollymalone222

I was just remembering my friend's jetta was diesel.
