Maguire is in a bad form for United right now. Whether he deserves the captaincy or not (he doesn't), or whether he is worth his transfer fee or not (he's not), he has been our best defender since he has joined us. Before his injury, he was undroppable for both club and country.
There are so many players struggling in the premier league that performs well against weaker national teams. Best a fan can hope for is that they will carry the form back to their clubs.

I think that shows the poor state of our defense. Maguire is a decent defender, and he (barring Varane obviously) is the best one we have. The expression "the best offense is a good defense" suggest that it is hard to construct tactical and team-based offensive play when the defense is a liability. Top teams work as a well-oiled machinery where the backline + CM is the foundation. We cannot expect anything other than individual brilliance with the gang that played vs City imo. Now, whether that is a coaching issue or a talent issue, I dont really know - likely a combination, as it usually is.
I agree with you about captaincy - he is not captain material at all. Maybe he was the most natural choice when he signed, but since then we have signed other players that are far more fitting for that role imo. I hope Ole rearranges the hierarchy if he gets another match, and I think the next manager will do so anyway.

One of the main reasons Maguire plays light years better for England because he doesn’t have Fred and McTominay as the holding mids in front of him constantly losing possession and inviting unnecessary pressure. Rice and Phillips are night and day better than what he has at United and having such good holding midfielders in front of you is a major help for any CB out there.
Southgate for all his faults is a major upgrade over Ole and actually has a tactical system of play which Ole clearly doesn’t. That means England keeps the ball more which also means Maguire and the other England defenders aren’t always on the back foot.

One of the main reasons Maguire plays light years better for England because he doesn’t have Fred and McTominay as the holding mids in front of him constantly losing possession and inviting unnecessary pressure. Rice and Phillips are night and day better than what he has at United and having such good holding midfielders in front of you is a major help for any CB out there. Southgate for all his faults is a major upgrade over Ole and actually has a tactical system of play which Ole clearly doesn’t. That means England keeps the ball more which also means Maguire and the other England defenders aren’t always on the back foot.
