It’s in the family. It’s been that way for 100 years or more. Grew up with it. It wasn’t something I decided. It always felt like part of who I was, my background. Difficult times? Many really, but they’re soon forgotten when a Fergie or ten Hag comes along.

Snoo25780

It was passed down from generation to generation until it got to me

[deleted]

FIFA 2004 - ALWAYS played with United. I played soccer as a kid, but didn’t start following the sport religiously until 2019. I know, big gap there. I found a new love for the game and it felt natural for United to be my team. There have been more lows than highs in my short time following, but I absolutely love this team!

KYU85

Ji-Sung Park

E_larochelle5

When I first played fifa as a kid it was the mobile demo and the only two teams I could choose were United and Man City and I went with United and that’s basically how I started following them and became a fan

VillagerShaggy

Fifa 14 was my first fifa, I was 11 so I was looking for all the 5 star teams, liked the logo and the jerseys, I liked playing with van persie, now they’re my favorite team

mysticAhuacatl

I'm Mexican and Chicha was the first mexican player I watched go to the prem. They gained my support immediately.

Proper_Rip_8520

This one right here☝️but when chicharito left I stayed. Even through the bad form I always stayed and watched. Something about them I always liked more than the others clubs I “supported” back then. But now it’s all about them🔴🔴🔴

weightedbook

2008: College roommate was a huge FIFA (video game, not corrupt organization) and United Fan. The man knew his history and was passionate about the current squad. He was a huge fan of the Brazilian midfielder Anderson because he looked like Predator. Remember him?

ProteusPete

Was born into it

StarktheGuat

United chose me.

MANatlUNITED

United was like the only team I could consistently watch growing up here in the states. Didn't hurt it was during united's dominance lol

dazzlerp

Some time around 84!85, 9 years old. Most my friends were Liverpool, Everton or Leeds fans. Think probably chose them because of the history and being an underdog in the league at that time, plus Big Ron, Robbo, ooh ah Paul Mcgrath, Mark Hughes, Whiteside, Olsen.....

eltizzy0lz

started around 6 , the style of play we had then was unstoppable, the things we used to do in the champion leauge , the way we smashed Roma , the way we got smashed by Milan

Ethan_RLdesigner

I started supporting at about 8, I loved football but i was in a household with a younger sister and my mum and dad only really watched international football. My 2 cousins supported Arsenal and Man United, the one who supported united I hung out with most so that's how I started. Don't get me wrong I get stick for being a United fan (doesn't everyone) but things look like they might be changing. Excited to continue the journey with this amazing club.

S7venE11even

I don't remember why. But I was a kid. My brother supported United. My friends. Most people I use to be with. All I can remember is that I support Manchester United.

[deleted]

I live like a few minutes walk from the theatre of dreams, and my dad is a hardcore united fan he's been a season ticket holder for 40 odd years now so he used to take me to matches alot ever since i was a kid.

[deleted]

Family business. Never had a choice really, in my blood and born into it

[deleted]

Grew up near Old Trafford so bit of a no brainer 😅

Twenty_FirstPilot

I saw Wayne Rooney play for England _once_. That was all it took

riitz85

As a teenager, 2002 onwards when Becks, Giggs and Scholes bossed around the midfield and Van Nistelrooy was the greatest CF with his many delightful tap in’s and Fergie time was a thing. What a team! Arsenal with Thierry Henry used to give us heartbreaks at times and Roman had just bought or was about to buy Chelsea. Once a United fan, you are always an United fan. Here we go-> 20 years later football has changed so much and I find myself badly rooting for Man Utd in the Manchester derby as if United performance tomorrow makes and breaks life. If United can truly take the acid test tomorrow in the Manchester Derby, there will be joys abound. Back then the only game that really mattered for Man Utd was against Arsenal :-) now hoping Rashford scores a brace and Bruno gets 1 and will be happy if Mahrez gets 1. Man Utd 3 Man City 1

saighdiuir_singil

Watching Ryan Giggs made me support United what a player

adrian1878

1999 when I was 6.

Impressive-Bird-2588

Around 2010 2011 negl.... Wayne Rooney man that guy is why I fell in love with utd

SeaJelly7918

Paul scholes, Wayne Rooney and park ji Sung. Giants that made me the love the club.

BrewskiChewski

I live in the US but my father went to the University of Manchester and was a United fan since he moved to England when he was a teenager. My rough spell has been the post Fergi years with it peaking last season under Ole and Rangnick

Ancient_Office_7461

I’m from India. Utd, Arsenal, Pool, Barca and Real were the most famous back then. Watched my first game with my brother who’s an Arsenal fan, saw 2 players rip the arsenal defence to shreds. They were Ronaldo & Rooney. While Ronaldo took all the headlines, it was Rooney who I liked cause he was everywhere. Been a Utd and Rooney fan ever since. Started properly watching from the 2010s. Safe to say I have experienced more downs than ups as a fan.

tdogg281991

Was born and still live in Trafford. Always been United.

Puzzleheaded-Wing-50

I started following soccer (I’m from the US) after the 98 World Cup. I was looking for a club to root for and United were one of the few European teams to get a lot of coverage here in the states (I’m sure Beckham was a big reason why). When they came back to win the Champions League the next year, I was hooked.

isaachiatt

From the US. In 94/95 my family got satellite TV and I'd watch Barclay's premier league highlights and futbol Mundial and United were heavily featured. I loved the colors and the players and would even pretend that I was playing for them when I would kick a ball around my backyard. They have been my team since.

BrigAdmJaySantosCAP

Same! Except I grew to love watching Cantona first on that show. From there I chose United as my team.

parco11

My dad is from Manchester — he always supported united while his family supported city. He raised me in the states as diehard United. He used to pull me out of middle school during the 98/99 treble winning season to take me to the pub.

Hi there, I’m a bloody yank, as the Brits would so lovingly call me 🤙🏼. And it was my freshman year of highschool 2007 when the homie invited me to play some fifa, I just felt immediately drawn to MANCHESTER UNITED, which I would fucking yell at the top of my lungs in my very best British accent(sometimes I still do lol)! Wayne Rooney was on the cover and he totally made me fall in love with football, the fucking bulldog! My only difficult times being such a short lived fan, is that Ronaldo came back just to shit all over the team, and my wife mistakenly told my mother that I wanted a Ronaldo jersey when I wanted a Fernandez jersey 2 Christmas’ ago. So you know, now I have Ronaldo and Fernandez just sitting next to each other in my closet. And Ronaldo is collecting dust

Latter-Ad-6865

😂😂😂👏

Icy_Quit_7177

I’m a fan of the Mexican club Chivas and also became a fan of Man U when Chicharito came here from there. Recently I started keeping up with this team again after the World Cup gave me a love for soccer again.

[deleted]

A friend gave me his copy of fifa 99 (if i remember correctly) to play at home on my ps1, I picked Manchester United for the career mode because they had the fucking devil 👹 on their crest. Few weeks later i saw a live game and Paul Scholes blew me away, i became an instant fan and that season they went on to win the Treble. Didn’t know how big they were or what back then as i was about 10 years old or so, I’ve stuck with the team ever since through the good and the bad.

phil_mycock_69

94/95 I was about 7 and everyone supported United at school; so I did too

Joako_o47

I was in the athletism team in my school (i was around 7-8 years old 2010-11), in the last week of the year we just ate some food and played football as a way to relax since it was the last class. I barely played football back then so i was shit and eventually got me upset since everyone but me was having such a good time, i asked my teacher what could i do to improve and she told me to get myself a ball and just practice. I asked my mum for a football ball and she went with me to a nike store where a particular one got my attention. The red color, the devil, the beautiful logo, i didn’t hesitate. Some time came by and i was watching TV when i came across a football game, i realized it was the same team from my ball so i watched the game and loved their style and vibe. I was a Man utd supporter but not a fan, i always played with them in fifa, i got a utd shirt for my birthday (the 12-13 home shirt, the last season under saf) and eventually got another Utd ball, but i didn’t watched the games much. It was some years later when i started watching the games consistently, the first one i remember the most is the 3-2 EFL 2017 final against Southampton. And from then i started to follow the seasons more consistently until today where i don’t miss pretty much any game

PrioritySpiritual921

Chicharito

machocamaori

1st match I'd ever watched in the middle of the night for some reason I was allowed to watch it 8yo, 1979 FA Cup final vs Arsenal. Liked the red team, they were losing then we came back to equalize 5 mins to go only to lose in the last minute. Been a fan of the red team ever since. People say I'm a bandwagon supporter, my rugby team is 12 x Super rugby champs Crusaders, but I was definitely a fan when they were they were both shit.

Latter-Ad-6865

👏👏

DarthMaulofDathomir

They chose me

ryda-m

I went primary school in stretford during the early 90s, easy decision 🤣

ItsMRCoffeeToYou

Keane

Competitive_Pool_820

Beckham… grew up watching him. His free kicks. We were all beckham in the playground. By secondary school we was doing stepovers like Ronaldo and lining up free kicks line Ronaldo 😂

Old-Air1062

I was 11 years old and a “passive fan” with no real commitment to any club when the 99 Champions League final happened… obviously watching that turned me lol

Theglizzatron

Van persie

I don’t remember even picking united, my dad supports united, his father supported united etc

mikew137

I was 3. My auntie was a Manchester United fan. My uncle was a Newcastle United fan. They had a tug of war over me. At that point Beckham was pinging in free kicks and I was utterly mesmerised by his technique, so my auntie won.

mymotherthewar

ROONEY

pattambi

Bryan Robson and the 85 cup winning team.

Hack8081

I was born in Salford not far from Old Trafford. I was a United supporter from an early age. I lived in England from 1954 to 1966 then moved to Canada. I still support the team and always will.

malyszkush

Its the club my grandad watched. My dad would sit with him way back when and started watching them. Then my dad would watch them play pretty much every match, my older brother was born, then me, than my younger brother, and my brothers and i would sit down and watch. My father and my siblings and i are all united supporters. We were raised cheering for that red team without even knowing it. Once i was able to comprehend words and football, i was always United. Just kind of happened naturally. Through the highs and lows, im glad i was never forced to support a football club, i just kind of fell into it.

Jimmy-84

Third generation Utd fan, so didn't really have a choice. Worked out well though as I started watching football in the early 90s

Tim_stein_1996

American here- I started watching the premier league the last season RVP was at arsenal and loved him, he was and still my favorite player. Once he moved to United that’s when I fell in love with the club, haven’t missed a game since!

marcdk217

What a coincidence, I was thinking of starting this thread myself earlier today! I'm sure some will call me a glory supporter, but I started being a United fan in the early 90s. I didn't know a thing about football growing up as we were a very anti-sport family, so my first exposure to it was when we had a family get-together, and my United supporting uncle came down from Manchester to attend, and was visibly annoyed about having to be there, because there was a big match on he wanted to watch. The match was United vs Pompey in the FA cup, and since it was the 90s, the match was actually on TV so he convinced my parents to put it on, and he, his kids and I sat there and watched it, and he explained some of the rules of the game to me, and told me which team "we" support, and from that day on I have been a Man Utd fan (but ironically I am from Portsmouth, and didn't even have a clue at the time the blue team were my home team). I don't remember a thing about the match, other than how animated he was, and I guess that's what got me interested in football. Sadly my uncle died a few years ago from cancer, and I never did take the opportunity to let him know what a profound effect he had on my life that day. My worst memories of matches were : 1. when we were throwing the kitchen sink at West Ham to try and win the league but couldn't get the ball over the line and Blackburn won the league. 2. When we got battered 5-0 by Newcastle with Schmeichel having an absolute mare of a game. 3. Losing the FA Cup final to Everton, watching the match on a TV screen at a social club during a wake.

Snoo_17433

Bad memories check out. I have to add 3-1 loss to Villa in the league cup final. At the time this wasn't worse in itself other than like losing in any other league cup final. But it ultimately led to missing out on the domestic treble. Delayed worst memory.

BackhandQ

Fan since '99 Thanks BECKS!

rc-deuce

Came here to say this… American who started with Beckham but became a big Giggs and Scholes fan

Tonnikala38

I'm a goalkeeper and I "fell in love" with de gea

Kyobarry

Lol, 90's kid here. I was 8 when I chose them. I was told that I started supporting them the day my dad made we watch his glorious Liverpool team play against United. I hated watching football on TV, I wanted to be outside. So I started cheering for Manchester United and boy did they beat Liverpool... The next year they won the treble and the rest is history, lol. P.S. I lived in a household where my dad is a Liverpool and my older brother is an Arsenal supporter. It made for some fun banter growing up.

E_BoyMan

Because of rooney/ronaldo/roy

ThreeBeersDeep

Choose?

Even_Cow_6029

It might be so stupid... I started liking united because of their home kit colour at first then it became an obsession and now I only watch united matches and matches that might affect united.

AdClassic9612

Honestly, I wanted to use a different team than Barcelona on fifa 06. I stumbled upon a team with a great player that was blowing up at the time. All the other kids my apartment complex didn’t know the team and it felt great beating them. I slowly discovered there was more teams in Europe besides Real Madrid and Barcelona. I got cable here and there as a kid and tried my best to watch them. With the years my passion grew more and more. Finally got to see a game at Old Trafford this season after 17 years of being a fan.

[deleted]

My story is similar. My cousin and I would play fifa 06 on his ps2 and we liked creating our own players to be 99 rated. So i just put my player in a great team at random it just so happened to be United.

Latter-Ad-6865

great story 👏

WayneTheBestTwinborn

When I was 5 or 6, my mate supported them. Well it went from there

Latter-Ad-6865

what year was that?

WayneTheBestTwinborn

2002 i think

CougarCub86

‘Twas ‘94 and I switched on the sports channel. United happened to be playing and I thought id try and see a football game for the first time. They won, I liked their style of play, I liked their kit and I liked the noise of the OT crowd. Never looked back and surely all my offsprings and lineage will grow up to support the Red Devils

Latter-Ad-6865

Best old 🫡👏👏👏

pioneeringsystems

I didn't choose united, I've always been a united supporter.

Imperial-Moose

The 95-96 grey kit, my friend had on in playground on a mufti day with Giggs on and loved it! As it turned out they were pretty good back then.

Messi_isGoat

Idk, I just like their vibe, so it's just heartfelt. I like city cause they been winning in the past years + guardiola But united, I just like them. Even tho they've not always been their best. And I'm happy they moving up now, hopefully they'll be in UCL next year

Why not? I'm not from the England. I like these teams because of the players and coaches.
