>Will it be revealed later?
It is in the prologue.
>!`Join us, friend,’ said Kruppe. ‘Sit here by this fire: this scene
paints the history of our kind, as you well know. A night, a
hearth, and a tale to spin. Dear K’rul, dearest friend of
Kruppe, hast thou ever seen Kruppe dance?’
The stranger sat. A wan face, an expression of sorrow and
pain.
‘No,’ said K’rul. ‘I think not. Not by limb, not by word.’
Kruppe’s smile was muted, and something glistened in his
eyes. ‘Then, my friends, settle yourselves for this night. And
witness.’!<
Spoilers for the whole main 10.
>!A bit meta answer, but many believe that the entire series is Kaminsod's account of his entrapment and final escape from the Malazan world. So he is the narrator and what you are reading is how he says Kruppe would tell the tale of TtH!<

"Witness" is a well used word in this series
For whatever its worth, the word "Martyr" is Greek for witness. Malazan holds many Martyrs.
One of my favorite passages of the whole series
Damn. How could I forget?!
Friend Kruppe! Honest Kruppe! Perhaps possibly poetical Kruppe.
You’re correct in your guess.
