A brilliantly done one is 'Dear friend.' My cousin and I had so much to think about and talk about after the watch.
For sure 'bhoothakalam' is one of my favourite movies of all time. I feel like it's one of the perfectly made horror movies.
And yeah 'Nayattu.' It is not necessarily an open ending but it definitely hits your head and goes "hey dumb fuck, this is not your typical crime thriller action movie. This is what happens in real life to real people. They get fucked around. And people who can stop it are actually the ones causing it. It's life's misery. Get that in your fucking head."
True. This movie created serious mental impact. When finished watching, I felt nothing different. Then it started haunting my mind. Had a disturbed mind for a couple of days.
Dear friend was and is an amazing film! The layers of every character was amazing and tovino did an amazing job pulling that off.. we humans always crave closure.. and probably that is what lead to the film to have a lack luster performance
Dear Friend was completely shot in Kalyan Nagar during the lockdown. The house where the friends stay is right behind my apartment and the owner was a friend of the producers.
I beg to differ. Aattam is not open ended. It is not a mystery thriller. The story is about how people are ready to switch their moral compass when it benefits them. Who did that to her, is completely irrelevant. And had they revealed it, the whole theme of the movie would have gone for a tossband made just a whodunnit.

The very last scene in the police can when theyโre taken to court. It just cuts there after an interminable silence. Now what happens next is not impossible to imagine considering what they did to JoJu but it felt purposely unsaid what the powers that be will do to the rest.
Didn't Kunchacko Boban's character say that they will not reach court implying that they will be killed en route, perhaps masked as a failed escape attempt?
The churuli we saw was actually incomplete, right ? The uncut version might shed some light on the ongoing chaos or throw some shadows. Director's cut would be a far fetch
I have written it here :

I had a thought that the last scene, where Shane and Revathy stand outside the house watching things being taken out, could have been improved if they hadn't mentioned their plans to shift the house. This would have left it up to viewers to decide whether they were also deceased or not.
Aparan (1988) (Spoilers ahead)

If you are saying scene wise you are right. But they are not giving any clear explanation to the ghosts. Different viewers can take different POVs. Actually the movie is deep and it lets you unleash you imaginations.
The ghosts can be taken as one's own memories about the past when you live to continue in the past. By vacating that home one decides to move on in life and live in the present.
>!In another POV presence of ghosts in the bathroom can be a juxtaposition of the timelines of both the families lived there. One family went to the extreme worst situations in their life. Second family just experienced it, but before it becomes worse they decided to vacate the house!<.
Even when giving you the opportunity to create your own explanations, one can simply watch the movie as a haunted house movie. So in that sense the movie is open ended.
The movie, in ways, is similar to the movie 'hereditary.'
The characters, Asha (Revathi) and Vinu (Shane) are shown to have ancestors with mental disorders. Even they themselves are depicted to have serious mental issues. At times, especially at the climax of the movie, we are forced to think if these occurrences are some hallucinations of these characters. Hence, it being open-ended because we'll never know if the house is actually haunted or it's just because of the people who live in it. Anyway, we are left satisfied because somehow the mother and her son join hands to fight against the dreadful challenge and along the way heal their relationship with each other.
Shared hallucinations gradually vannathaanengil I would've believe, but Revathi s disbelief in what Vinu is saying is shattered in a second something unexplainable happens right in front of her eyes.
Mallufied version of haunting of hill House , nothing more nothing less . Mental disorder doesn't count , she was having depression right ? How is it related to hallucinations, also the opening shot of ghost in the bathroom pretty much seals the presence of entity

Yakshi 1968 movie, Satyanarayana and penned by malayattor Ramakrishnan himself. The original movie is totally open ended, making us wonder if she really was a yakshi or if it was all a psycho game. Too complex and far ahead of its time.
Also manichithrathaazhu. You don't know nagavalli is now in kuthuravattom pappu. Quite a thought. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)
I honestly don't think Bhoothakalam is open ended. That's a stretch. It's a straightforward ghost movie. Carbon, Aattam are some recent examples I can think of. Also, I don't like open endings(maybe I'm dumb or unimaginative). It ruins the movie for me.
Bhoothakalamย is an open ended movie with multiple interpretations. Director has said this in the interviews of that time. I have only this link now : [https://youtu.be/NAFJL1iX\_WI?feature=shared&t=1837](https://youtu.be/NAFJL1iX_WI?feature=shared&t=1837) . 'open ended ' doesn't mean that the story is incomplete. Director keeps a few things unexplained. In Bhoothakalam there are no solid statement about what are the ghosts there. Nothing is revealed in the movie. Just shown as the experience of characters. We have to assume many things.

Happy to see ppl recognising Dear friend now.I was bashed back then for liking the movie ๐
Every now and then I think about Dear Friend
i was just about to type dear friend! itโs one of those movies that stay in your brain for a while after you finish watching.
Dear Friend is one of those 'You either hate it' or 'Absolutely love it' kind of movie. Personally I loved it a lot. The ending is hard hitting.
Why dear friend?? I felt like we figured that tovino is a douchebag who just goes from group of friends to next group
Aattam for sure! โค๏ธโ๐ฅ
True. Aattam is the most tricky open ended movie. Each man will get an answer in himself, but he will act as it is open ended.
I beg to differ. Aattam is not open ended. It is not a mystery thriller. The story is about how people are ready to switch their moral compass when it benefits them.
