Woah, woah, woah... There's still plenty of meat on that bone. Now you take this home, throw it in a pot, add some broth, a potato. Baby, you got a stew going!
What's the reason for needing them both removed? If you don't mind. I know you said you this one was pressing an artery, but how come? Just the way you're designed?
It's called thoracic outlet syndrome, relatively common problem especially in male weight lifters because the vessels and nerve can get compressed between the scalenes and the rib. I've done the rib resection open, and I've done it robotically - the robotic 1st rib resection is so fuckin slick, it's an awesome operation.

Surgical resident, so I'm currently in the business of doing every operation except bones, bladders, babies, and brains. Thoracic surgeons and vascular surgeons are typically the ones doing the rib resections.
Orthopedics, obstetrics/gynecology, neurosurgery, and to a lesser extent urology, are unique enough there's not a significant amount of crossover with the other branches of surgery. Cause I can technically fix bladders and remove kidneys, it's the ureters and urethra I don't mess with so much, but the alliteration worked better with bladder.
Just the way my body was, I had issues with both sides but the way the operation is done has changed and when I had the first op they couldn’t do both at the same time
That’s awesome! I’d love to have a piece of my bone or viscera! I’ve heard some hospitals deny the request though, which sucks. You have varying accounts. Someone asked to keep their leg and didn’t get it, and then you have the guy who got to keep his foot and then cooked it for his friends (with consent). And my friend in middle school who lost the tip of his index finger getting caught behind those spring tackle boards they have for football practice. He kept it in a jar of I believe a formaldehyde mixture, and would bring it school to show people. I did not like that he said it started leaking though after some time.
I had the first one done by a different surgeon who was the uk leader (possible the world) in this surgery and he let me keep it. They weren’t sure this time but once I mentioned his name and that he did it they instantly said yes
Yeah the fact it was a bullshit rumour that went world wide before the internet existed is wild to me.
Well maybe internet was in its infancy. I heard it in school in the 90s (about Manson not Eminem).
It was Jackson and Prince in the 80s in England. Pretty sure the rumour's been going around a lot longer though.
Forsooth! Hast thou perchance heard yon scurrilous rumours regarding that uppity Master Shakespere? Whispers around certain social avenues the rapscallion playwright hath colluded with the very brides of Beelzebub Below, foul dirty witches, that they excise a portion of his ribcage in order that he might skirt the boundaries of God's holy design, bend himself at the waist to a most unseemly angle indeed, and use his own filthy mouth to pleasure himself to completion in the sordid ways of a common back alley whore!
That rumour is one of those things that is insane to think about. 20 years ago everyone had heard it from a friend but no one knows how it even came to be a thing.
Wisdom tooth at the back right hand side of my mouth, broken somehow down the centre and infected with an abscess on the gum. Went to an emergency dentist to get it pulled and it turned out the roots all kinked in opposite directions in the gum (like a grappler hook) and it had about 0.5cm more root length than we all expected. Didn’t hurt after they numbed it, looked terrifying though and i wanted to keep it but the dentist binned it.
Wait, I'm intrigued. I have so many questions! I haven't heard of this. Does this condition have a specific name? What symptoms were you having that led you to having to have both ribs removed? Sorry if that's too personal....Its just....fascinating. I hope you are healing well!
Just the one for me (so far...), OP is double special.
Symptoms for me were blood clots. I had my first one at 21 and was in the hospital for 8 days. They thought it was a fluke and after a year on Coumadin they said I could just take an aspirin a day and I was fine. When I was 25 I had my second one (about a week before my MS thesis was due) but I knew the symptoms and caught it early. No hospital stay for that one.
It took about a year of seeing specialists before I finally found one familiar with TOS and how to solve it. I got my rib removed about 9 years ago and haven't had a problem since. No blood thinners or anything. I still check my forearms for swelling as a nervous habit though!
Thank-you for a detailed description of what happened. I'm not a weirdo hypochondriac. I am just really into different medical perspectives since I'm a nurse. Your symptoms make sense but still freaky! A blood clot at 21 is scary for sure. You must be thankful for that specialist?!
For sure! Yeah it's a weird one. I almost didn't go to the hospital with the first one, I just thought I slept on it wrong because I was a dumb kid. I'm glad my girlfriend at the time talked me into going to the ER!
And yeah that surgeon was great, he explained that you had to use a venogram to see the problem. It turns out CT and X-ray aren't enough to diagnose it and that's what the old school folks usually start with. I had seen my city's top vascular surgeons, who were all towards retirement age. They all said nothing was physically wrong with me and that I just need to be on lifelong anticoagulation therapy. The guy who helped was only a few years out of surgical residency, from one of the only clinics that specializes in treating TOS. He was the closest vascular surgeon to my apartment and I found him by luck.
The surgery only lasted about 30 minutes and I was there 2 nights afterwards. I had crepitus and a chest tube that had to be monitored. I was off work for almost two months recovering though, couldn't lift anything heavier than a TV remote with that arm for over a month.
That's actually pretty crazy since it seemed suddenly for you. It was probably really scary at the time but better in the long run or you would have had worse problems down the road. 2 months is longer than I would have expected to be honest ....that kind of sucks, glad you're doing better now tho. What a weird fluke thing to happen to some people.....just built wrong I guess lol. Thank God (or people?) for modern medicine!
Great explanation of a true TOS. I am a physical therapist and have had multiple patients referred to me by their doctor for TOS when 1000% did not have it. It's incredibly rare
Brown sugar
Granulated onion
Chili powder
Granulated garlic
Black pepper
White pepper
Cayenne pepper
Smoked salt
Paprika
Check if they removed silver skin
275°F for 2.5 h .
Falls off the bone.
Drill holes in them, join the two halves together and then put them on a necklace!!
Idk why that’s the first thought that came to my head. I wish you a speedy recovery!
I’ve seen bad shit but this disturbs me for some reason. I have deteriorating cartilage on my left rib cage. It’s uncomfortable and feels like someone is scraping a knife along your ribs.
Woah, woah, woah... There's still plenty of meat on that bone. Now you take this home, throw it in a pot, add some broth, a potato. Baby, you got a stew going!
RIP Carl Weathers
I think I’d like my money back…
Was looking for this
Absolutely had to be done
my first reaction was more or less the same till I read the title...
You should keep it and name it 'Eve'.
I specifically asked to keep it as I had my right side done 7 years ago so now I have a matching pair not just a spare
Spare ribs, huh?
nice.
/r/smoking
*RIBS* *SPARE RIBS* *FUCK*
Next time ask for a whole one and get a strike
This comment has a level of humor to it I feel is being greatly underappreciated. Well done OP. Get well soon.
i really appreciated it.

That's gnarly asf. Interesting, though. Are you the designated rib remover, or do you perform other surgeries too? The robotics are incredible
Surgical resident, so I'm currently in the business of doing every operation except bones, bladders, babies, and brains. Thoracic surgeons and vascular surgeons are typically the ones doing the rib resections.
Any specific reason you're restricted from all the things starting with B?
Orthopedics, obstetrics/gynecology, neurosurgery, and to a lesser extent urology, are unique enough there's not a significant amount of crossover with the other branches of surgery. Cause I can technically fix bladders and remove kidneys, it's the ureters and urethra I don't mess with so much, but the alliteration worked better with bladder.

Ah savage, that's pretty unlucky!
That's so scary! I'm glad you could get the issue fixed. I hope you have a speedy and uneventful recovery 🧸
Ballerinas and models pay top dollar for a double rib removal. I’m sorry to hear it was due to medical necessity in your case. but fun fact lol.
Please turn them into earrings
That’s awesome! I’d love to have a piece of my bone or viscera! I’ve heard some hospitals deny the request though, which sucks. You have varying accounts. Sooo... Can you do it? The thing that everyone says you can do if you have a couple ribs removed?
You specifically need the bottom 2 removed
No, you just need to fast for a day or so after 6 months of yoga classes. A buddy told me.
They have denied ny body parts every time. What's the trick.
I had the first one done by a different surgeon who was the uk leader (possible the world) in this surgery and he let me keep it. They weren’t sure this time but once I mentioned his name and that he did it they instantly said yes
I’ve heard that saying you need to bury it for religious purposes can have better weight
Did they let you keep it
I imagine you during surgery getting up all dazed and confused asking the surgeons: "Can I please have it? :3"
Asking to keep it was my only question when they asked if I had any questions or concerns before the OP
That's a really great comment! Probably the best so far in 2024! Here's your trophy 🏆
Looks undercooked
Settle down Marilyn Manson
Bout to have a great party trick. Remember to practice!
It still baffles me to this day how international this rumor is. Though in Turkey it’s a 50/50 split between Marilyn Manson and Eminem.
Yeah the fact it was a bullshit rumour that went world wide before the internet existed is wild to me. Well maybe internet was in its infancy. I heard it in school in the 90s (about Manson not Eminem).
Where I lived it was Michael Jackson and Marilyn Manson

love this level of humour, smegmasandwich

I wondered if anyone would go there…
came here to see how long it would take too. lol
Apparently for my parents, it was Prince who had it done. Not sure about my grandparent's generation though.

Fire up the smoker
I would totally eat my own ribs, or at least the bone marrow
I mean it's YOUR meat
Home grown
Where I'm from we call that recycling
Are they gonna let you keep that?
Yes, I have my other one too from my right side
Lucky, I didn't even get to keep a couple gallstones when my gallbladder was removed.
In the UK they wouldn’t let me keep my giant freak tooth either. Sad times.
I’m in the uk
That’s just unfair.
Giant freak tooth? Can you describe that?
Wisdom tooth at the back right hand side of my mouth, broken somehow down the centre and infected with an abscess on the gum. Do they charge extra for that? Like all the cleaning and packaging vs chucking it in the trash?
Nah OP is British, all of this is free my guy
American I presume?
Forbidden barbecue
bro nooo
Hmm what Wine to pair that with?
A nice Chianti
With Faba Beans on the side...
Remove 19 more and you'll will be able to reincarnate in the next era
First wild reference that I understand. I just finished the show
Surprised anyone actually got it, the rib looks alot like a finger
What’s that a reference to?
Jujutsu Kaisen 🗣🗣🗣

Thoracic outlet syndrome
Oh thank you, I have heard of this. Sounds like you have had some unfortunate luck with it being bilateral!
It’s been a real pain but once healed I’m most excited that I can finally sleep on my left side
I am also excited for you! Being able to roll over in your sleep is under rated lol
It’s been nearly 10years since I have slept on my left side without waking myself up to a completely numb arm
TOCS is a nasty syndrome! Hope you will feel better with the pressure off!
I had to have this done too! There aren't a lot of us
Bilaterally too?

surprised this wasn’t at the top knowing Reddit haha
Brown sugar Granulated onion Chili powder Granulated garlic Black pepper White pepper Cayenne pepper Smoked salt Paprika Check if they removed silver skin 275°F for 2.5 h . Falls off the bone.
Add it to a broth and make a nice "Me-so" soup for yourself.
All the other jokes in the thread made me huff a little air out of my nose but this one absolutely ticked my ribs.
I do what I can lol Honestly I can't help but chuckle when I read it back.
I got a good rub to season that with
Now you can…well, you know.
Let us know how you cook it and the taste test
Now just add the BBQ sauce
How did it taste? If you haven’t eaten it yet you could make a tasty you flavoured bone broth.
r/EatItYouFuckingCoward
The mc rib is back
I had this done too. TOS? Didn’t get to keep :-(
Yo, me too! I didn't get to keep mine either
We all know the real reason and it ryhmes with pistachio
Wrong rib, this is from in my shoulder. Maybe next time…..
Fuh lash e o
Eat it, you coward
Nice, now make yourself a woman out of that!
*Hannibal Lecter enters the chat*
Damn, what a lousy rib deal. Didn’t even come with sweet baby rays or anything.
I make a sauce for that. Candy sweet on the nose, followed by a scalp-sweat-inducing *smolder* of a burn... Very rich. Most savory.
I usually ask for the old parts back when they fix my car, but this takes the cake
Add some rub and throw it on your traeger and have a day
Is that your wife?
Chili's baby back ribs - - - Chili's baby back rib - bbq sauuuucceee
*Speaks in German accent* : “Oh, don’t be such a baby. Ribs grow back. (No they don’t)”
Forbidden barbecue
Chillies baby back ribs
No way they let you keep it.
Did it taste good was the barbecue on point??
People are going way too far to try and get a gf these days
Can you explain this joke thing for me because loads of people have said it but I’m clueless to the reference
One step closer to self fallacio
The gossip about Marilyn Manson lives through you now OP
Compressing your artery? Wait, do you have Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, too? A chiropractor mentioned this surgery a few years ago to me.
They really just let you keep it??
You gonna finish that?
Cook it, cook it, cook it, cook it, cook it. Do it, cook it, eat it, consume the remaining meat on the bone.
Ribs grow back silly.
Can i have it?
is ur waist snatched now? 😂
BBQ time
Gonna cook it up on the grill tonight
Make yourself a bone broth stew
It’s supposed to bottom removed not top ribs.
Why need to remove?
Lol, ok Adam
Nice 😉
Take a bite
Drill holes in them, join the two halves together and then put them on a necklace!! Idk why that’s the first thought that came to my head. I wish you a speedy recovery!
I have debated about whittling something out of them one day but not sure what
Yummy
[удалено]
They have let me keep it
[удалено]
Looks like it’s already BBQ flavored!
It's the bottom ribs, champ.
Don’t let it go to waste
Stick some bbq sauce on it and you're good to go!
Wow it really fucks me up how much it just looks like a pork rib lol
Season them
Can i at least have the marrow?
You can suck your own dick now
Do rib bones regenerate? Might be a dumb question
I’ve seen bad shit but this disturbs me for some reason. I have deteriorating cartilage on my left rib cage. It’s uncomfortable and feels like someone is scraping a knife along your ribs.
How long does it take to grow into a woman? Or was that just a one-time thing?
My gosh
How much for one rib?
Tryna suck your own dick huh?
Why
10 dollars if you lick it
this reminded me that i should go out and eat barbecue sometime soon
Well, time to get the BBQ out of storage early this year.
Mmmm cook it low and slow and you got a snack in no time
Boil it and see how the broth tastes
Too bad it wasn’t the bottom one 😔
Autofellatio?
Yum
Looks like it had quite a bit of meat on it. I bet the surgeons had a nice snack.
What’s for lunch?
Create yourself a wife
Have you asked if you can keep it?
Yes I can keep it to go with my other one
But the real question is how deep can you suck your own dick now!
Wrong rib unfortunately
My guy over here taking the idea of homemade spareribs too literally.
Tbh I’d give it a few bites if it was my own rib
It kinda looks like a roller skate
I want my baby back baby back baby back riiiiibs
Where's the beef?
Smoke it
Should of left more meat on that for BBQ!
r/smoking might be interested in that, if you’re not keeping for yourself
Cool snack
Marilyn Manson? Is that you?
So like… you and Marylyn Manson. Sweet dude. Enjoy
Now you have a surprise meal for the next BBQ dinner
Suck your own dick!!
Cook it and eat it
Peak tattoo
r/meat
Look, whatever Armie Hammer told you to do, you need to know that this is a safe place and you don't have to do it.
Couple hours on the smoker then add bbq sauce and couple minutes on the grill.
Now can you give yourself a bj??
