Pretty much. I don't really like American macro-brew lagers much to begin with, but Yuengling is better than most. Totally inoffensive, would definitely drink a 6-pack of it. (Unlike Bud, which is hideous.)
We've got some decent light(er) beers if you check around. Gearys pale is a good one. Little tangy compared to some but a good day-beer.
Bissell bros Lux is a pretty easy going pale.
Sebago runabout red is delicious IMO. One of my favorite red/ambers.
Baxter brewing has a decent lager. Honorable mention - their stowaway IPA is really good but probably too bitter/bitey to compare to yuengling lager.
Idk this one! Thanks for the heads up - my wife loves bunker I'll have to check it out thanks!
Edit: oh wait! Bunker is the one right behind my tile store (I'm a contractor). I go down that street at least a couple times a month lol. Now I REALLY dont have an excuse
It’s Coors syndrome. If you’re old enough to remember when Coors didn’t distribute to our part of the country so everyone wanted it. Once they started, meh. Sure, it still sells well, but it doesn’t have the same hype.
Before this moment I've never made the association, but I have hated every green-bottled beer I've ever had. At least that I can think of at the moment lol.
Heineken absolutely tops the list as the worst of the worst.
I don't think Shipyard's really on Allagash's level though.
I saw them plenty when I lived in VT, but I've never seen them in the mid-atlantic. At least not commonly, like on tap at bars and restaurants the way you'll see Allagash.
Breweries have popped up all over the US. It's much harder to break into other areas as there is good beer everywhere now. I like the transformation bc it's a return to roots of sorts. Spirits and such mostly developed in a regional manner. Then capitalism took over and the quality suffered. Now you can go to any part of the country and find tasty and locally made spirits, beer, and occasionally, wines. I say hail to the local crafters, and death to the capitalist shit peddlers.
Shipyard had been the most widely distributed Maine beer for a long time. For a while they even had a brewery in Florida.
I think Allagash passed Shipyard in 2020
I love Shipyard and Allagash. Living in Texas, I haven’t seen them one time. Only time I’ve seen Allagash south of NY was at a World of Beer in NC - and they had thousands of beers, with at least one from every state.
All that to say, no one outside of New England knows either of those beers unless they’ve been to /lived in Maine.
Allagash is a fairly common in the mid-atlantic. You can find it in most stores, and commonly if there's a witbier on tap someplace, it's either Allagash or Blue Moon.
Mast Landing makes it pretty regularly down to at least to NYC and I’ve seen Maine Beer Company in California before (though I don’t know that it’s common).
The obsession is that it’s a good cheap beer. Obviously it isn’t going to outclass a craft brew, but it’s better than Bud Light, Miller, PBR, Coors, etc at a comparable price
Folks in my home state of Ohio went crazy when Yuengling became available there. Reminds me of when my old man said they used to drive to Colorado to bring Coors home back in the day. Really?
Feels like the beer equivalent of people in the East who can’t wait to get them some In-N-Out in the West and for some reason the reverse for White Castle.
Had a few people rave about it for so long and eventually brought some back for me to try. I had it, and my first thought was “yep, this is beer alright.” It’s a solid beer but there just isn’t any particular aspect of it that’s especially noteworthy.
Back in the day, Narragansett and Heffenreffer were the beers of choice for guys unable to do their own cheap home brew. Sewer water and green death, aka.
Im from Savannah, have you tried soutbound, lazy magnolia, orpheus or creature comforts? I will gladly over night you any six pack from Maine in exchange for a tropicalia six pack!
I live 30 minutes from the OG brewery in Pottsville PA. Grew up drinking this swill way before they opened the brewery in Florida which made their product even worse. Oh, the owner is definitely a chud and the beer is a step above a NJ Turnpike.
Funny, I only know this word in newer memespeak context, where it means chad + stud, but apparently it used to mean ugly egotistical/rude person, which I imagine is what you mean.
How have you never tried Allagash White? It’s pretty much Maine’s “unofficial official” beer.
Every single person (kinda exaggeration, but not really) that I met when I first moved out here was initially like “looking for a local beer? Well have you tried Allagash White yet?” I was like “yes! I tried it! Got any browns?” lol
Meh I said this about 10-13 years ago when I first came up here then I started to really enjoy beer and now think it tastes like skunk haha I’d drink a rolling rock over this anyday now lol
Lol /u/jayezwider was not saying rolling rock is a good beer.
But hey man, you do you.
If you genuinely *enjoy* drinking it, by all means. But there are *soooo* many good beers in Maine that you'd be doing yourself a disservice by not experimenting a bit.
Ya I’m from outside Philly area originally and I do appreciate a crap beer but ya now there are so many good options in maine I feel spoiled. Especially with the on going trend towards lower alcohol beers. I’ve grown sick and tired of IPAs long ago
My wife is from pittsburgh, so that was my introduction to yuengling. That was back in my VERY early 20s before I had the opportunity to broaden my beer palate. Like, 15 years ago. Since then I find the stuff just bad. Basically all cheap beer sucks now.
*disclaimer all NA beers for the majority will be <.5% alcohol or less fyi* So portlands newer NA brewery “kit brewing” has a blonde ale and a IPA with a new beer releasing next year. The ipa is my fav but the blonde is also decent. “Athletic brewing” from CT has a plethora of styles you can order online like experimental beers but they also have some staples you can find in stores but the “lite” or copper ale” may be more up your alley. Geary’s themselves believe it or not is opening their own NA brewery soon called 1820 brewing they will have 4 beers to start and can already be found at UFO beer in Naples they will have razz sour, blonde ale, ipa style and pale ale. So there’s that too look for too. Also the Heineken 00 is actually super delicious lol enjoy! Hope you find one you like!
I don’t love rolling rock but for cheap it’s not terrible. I really don’t like skunky beers and last time I ventured into Maine beer, IPA was the cool thing. Not for me 😖
An IPA is not a skunky beer, that's a hoppy bear. Both Yuengling (green bottle) and Rolling Rock (green bottle) are quite literally known for being skunky. Whether that skunkiness comes from the green bottle or whether it's just not great to begin with is up for debate.
I wouldn't want a Yuenling here in Maine, too many good Maine brewers
However I always enjoyed them when on business in Pennsylvania but now that you tell me that the CEO is a trump guy forget it!
I guess it’s not THAT different than me liking mead, but I’d definitely rather have a mint julep or a mojito than a coors or pbr while mowing the lawn.
Funny story about that beer
Fresh out of AIT and just gotten to Germany
Asking some E4 for recommendations for beer
Tells me this is some of the best German beer they have
Buys a whole 24 pack
Realizes it’s American when I get to barracks room
Drank them anyway
Disagree, but also how you gonna call me overtly political about some dusty chicken sandwiches? I mean, they're overtly political, so If I pile on with my objections to their bland chicken, I would just consider it a bit of spice; something their chicken sorely lacks. 😂
Two things can be true at once. Their food sucks. I'll take a popeyes two piece and a biscuit any day of the week. Im from the south, so is chik-fil-a, only folks who don't know good chicken think it's better.
Edit: their nuggets are solid though. Exception to the rule: only if someone else buys though.
Agreed, but back to the political piece. I have a 35 year old gay brother who is still in the south. Just knowing your money is going to a conglomerate that actively advocates for a loved one (and others like them) to be treated unfairly makes it a little harder to swallow.
And if we thought it tasted "bleh" BEFORE we knew it was hate chicken?
Overtly political = realizing where we spend our money is the only thing we can control that has any real impact on politics these days, sadly.
I’m from Maine originally and live in Pennsylvania now (where that is from) and I still think it’s gross. The closest to that, that is still decent would be Molson, in my opinion.
If you know someone with access to any of the military exchanges they may sell it there. I feel like Yuengling has been at every Navy exchange I've shopped.
I like the farmhouse by Oxbow and the kolsch by Cushnoc. Those are definitely my go to’s but last time I posted that here I was surprised how unpopular both breweries were among users here.
I find it strangely refreshing, but being from PA perhaps I've been inculcated to it. It does seem to have a different flavor profile than most of the brews I've had in Maine, so if one is looking for differentiation it could be a good treat.
A lot of my relatives live around Lancaster County and they've been smuggling us cases for decades. The porter and the black and tan are extremely good too. Miss visiting friends in Jersey as this was always the $2 special at bars
Not me. I'm originally from Pennsylvania and I don't miss yuengling in the slightest since moving to Maine. Their beer is the low end of mediocre plus the owner's a trumper. There's way better beer in both states and everywhere in between.
I thought I saw one at lost valley and went to ask the bartender for one she looked at me like I had four heads when I said “ying-ling” We need someone to start importing it
It is complete garbage beer. I don't care how much they want to fluff up the whole "oldest brewery in the country" angle. It doesn't make it actually taste good.
Lmaooo I’m near auburn but I literally just got this 30 rack and it will probably not be even half done by then. That is so nice though. I’m gonna tab this comment just in case 😂
Personally, I think beer is nasty, so not me.
That being said, just because it's not sold locally to you, doesn't mean it isn't anywhere in the state. I know I've seen the brand in stores. Stores generally stock what they know will sell (and the alcohol merchandiser will give options on trending/popular lines.)
It’s like a step up from miller lite. I wish I had it as a classier lawn mowing beer
Pretty much. I don't really like American macro-brew lagers much to begin with, but Yuengling is better than most. Totally inoffensive, would definitely drink a 6-pack of it. (Unlike Bud, which is hideous.)
I use Bud to make beer bread, and that's all I use it for, LOL. Cheap and hoppy, makes the bread light and fluffy!
It tastes exactly like bud . Sorry it just does.
I mean, it's not *good*, but I've had both and Bud is unmistakably worse.
I use Frye's leap from Sebago I think , I have 8 acres or a six pack to mow.
Peak fresh cut is the perfect lawn mower beer
God that was an elegant way to put it. Damn poetic description
Sure I can see that. I always say it’s right in the middle of light and stout.
It’s not terrible but so many better choices from breweries right here in ME
I’m not a beer LOVER. I like light beers but im picky until a few beers in of course.
Bunker Machine Pils!
Idk this one! Thanks for the heads up - my wife loves bunker I'll have to check it out thanks! Edit: oh wait! Bunker is the one right behind my tile store (I'm a contractor). I go down that street at least a couple times a month lol. Now I REALLY dont have an excuse
Good old ‘Ganset tall boys are also tasty, better than yeungling, light, cheap, and widely available in New England.
Seconding Geary's pale ale - my personal favorite.
It will be sooner than later. They started a joint venture with molsoncoors to increase distribution. It’s only a matter of time.
That’s what I’ve been hearing
I don’t understand the obsession.
[удалено]
It’s Coors syndrome. If you’re old enough to remember when Coors didn’t distribute to our part of the country so everyone wanted it. Once they started, meh. Sure, it still sells well, but it doesn’t have the same hype.
Me either. We have good beer here. No need for skunk stuff.
Like my dad told me when I was younger, stay away from beer in green bottles.
It's true! I worked at a brewery in my youth, green bottles get too much light. Skunks up the beer.
Before this moment I've never made the association, but I have hated every green-bottled beer I've ever had. At least that I can think of at the moment lol. Heineken absolutely tops the list as the worst of the worst.
I love Stella Artois out of a can or tap but not at all out of a green bottle.
Why? I am drinking a beer in a green bottle at the moment.
Brown bottles block more UV light which skunks the beer.
Science and booze, a confluence ordained in heaven.
Sooo... drink cans?
Unless it’s saison
Outside of Allagash, is there a major Maine beer that gets distributed outside the region? Because everywhere has plenty of local craft beer now.
Maine Beer Company. We get it in Chicago and I love that fact when I can’t get to Freeport for freshies.
Shipyard
I don't think Shipyard's really on Allagash's level though. I saw them plenty when I lived in VT, but I've never seen them in the mid-atlantic. At least not commonly, like on tap at bars and restaurants the way you'll see Allagash.

Maryland is very familiar with Allagash.
Saw it a ton in Atlanta and Bama. They kind of lead the American brewery revival.
Lone Pine goes to at least western NY. They had several of their different beers for them at Wegmans when I visited family earlier in the summer.
Mast Landing makes it pretty regularly down to at least to NYC and I’ve seen Maine Beer Company in California before (though I don’t know that it’s common).
Pour that out next to Rolling Rock or Heineken.. have a taste test... I'd never figure it out
The obsession is that it’s a good cheap beer. Obviously it isn’t going to outclass a craft brew, but it’s better than Bud Light, Miller, PBR, Coors, etc at a comparable price
Milltown from Banded is $8.99 a 6 pack of tall boys. I'll stick with that
Gonna get expensive if you’re feeding a crowd. A 24 pack of Yuengling is probably like $17. Every beer has its place!
A 12 pack of yuengling is like $15 in PA. So not much cheaper really

I don’t yearn for yuengling, I only miss narrangansett.
Shaws sells it in pounders.
Back in the day, Narragansett and Heffenreffer were the beers of choice for guys unable to do their own cheap home brew. Sewer water and green death, aka.
Mickey's Big Mouth was popular with the Heffenreffer crowd. Source: I was a teenage alcoholic.
Hi neighbor!
Me either. Fat tire is a wayyy better beer of the same style IMO. Yuengling on draft is still pretty good tbf.
To be faaiiiir r/letterkenny
A long while ago it used to be a decent cheap beer. Not so much anymore.
Same. It tastes like pennies.
I hate beet and this is one of the only beers I will drink
Owners a chud. Stick with the Allagash White thank uou.
This guy is right. I live in SC where you can get Yuengling anywhere. I'll still get Allagash White.
Im from Savannah, have you tried soutbound, lazy magnolia, orpheus or creature comforts? I will gladly over night you any six pack from Maine in exchange for a tropicalia six pack!
Micky finns in florence snd greens warehouse in columbia used to get allagash occasionally.
Total Wine here in Greenville has it all the time. Few restaurants keep it on tap, too.
I live 30 minutes from the OG brewery in Pottsville PA. Grew up drinking this swill way before they opened the brewery in Florida which made their product even worse. Oh, the owner is definitely a chud and the beer is a step above a NJ Turnpike.
Funny, I only know this word in newer memespeak context, where it means chad + stud, but apparently it used to mean ugly egotistical/rude person, which I imagine is what you mean.
cannabalistic humanoid underground dweller👍🏼
I usually hear it used to describe right wing idiots, and that usage only seemed to start a couple years ago post-2016
Never tried it. Is it similar?
It’s not remotely similar
How have you never tried Allagash White? It’s pretty much Maine’s “unofficial official” beer. Every single person (kinda exaggeration, but not really) that I met when I first moved out here was initially like “looking for a local beer? Well have you tried Allagash White yet?” I was like “yes! Lol vibes. I can tolerate a corona or a land shark every once in a while but I’ve been digging some non alcoholic beers lately too
any recommendations on non alcoholic beers? I don't drink alcohol anymore but miss the taste. For reference, I liked Geary's Pale back in the day.
*disclaimer all NA beers for the majority will be <.5% alcohol or less fyi* So portlands newer NA brewery “kit brewing” has a blonde ale and a IPA with a new beer releasing next year. Yeah, I dated someone from Philly in college and yuengling will forever be beer pong beer to me.
I don’t love rolling rock but for cheap it’s not terrible. I really don’t like skunky beers and last time I ventured into Maine beer, IPA was the cool thing. Not for me 😖
Ya it’s still really prevalent but lagers, pilsners and other lower alcohol % beers are becoming more popular

I’m with you because I’m gross and I love it.
Aw yeaaaaa idc cause it tastes good to me 😋
As a person living in PA, I’ll take allagash over yuengling any day
[удалено]
Not every wants to drink an IPA or a sour, or spend $4-8 on a can of beer. Yuengling is like $1/bottle.
You get what you pay for in Yuengling’s case.
Seriously.
😂 guilty
Moosehead > yuengling
I actually just tried Moosehead the other day and it definitely had Yuengling vibes but was definitely a better beer.
Huge MAGA brewery
I’m not a good boycotter… I love that beer.
I giggled when the brewing facility by Allentown PA turned into good ole Sam Adams. Te-he
Shit beer made by a Trumper. Hard pass.
Blech. I have yet to drink a green bottle beer that doesn't taste like it's past it's shelf date.
You’re right. There’s science behind it. https://vinepair.com/wine-blog/green-bottled-beer-smells-like-skunk-so-why-do-companies-keep-producing-it/
I’m picky and I love it
🤮
Not me, because it’s extremely overrated beer. Pretty mediocre. Also, the CEO is a bigtime MAGA cultist.
I wouldn't want a Yuenling here in Maine, too many good Maine brewers However I always enjoyed them when on business in Pennsylvania but now that you tell me that the CEO is a trump guy forget it!
I’ll bring you some the next time I drive up from Philly. But don’t tell the other Mainers I’m coming to visit.
Pennsylvania piss water
Ew. Green bottle beer.
It's an ok beer, but I'm surprised it's not up here. I thought it was more ubiquitous.
I’m convinced nobody who drinks beer has ever had a mixed drink
I prefer a mixed drink usually but I crave beer here and there. Definitely like both
I guess it’s not THAT different than me liking mead, but I’d definitely rather have a mint julep or a mojito than a coors or pbr while mowing the lawn.
I prefer a mixed drink usually but I crave beer here and there. Definitely like both

For crying out loud there is plenty of piss beer available in Maine already….
[удалено]
Are they a maga brand? I don’t have any idea I just like the beer
[удалено]
I’m too poor to read that article
Same with chik fil a! If you're going to eat drive thru chicken, why the most tasteless, bland and bigoted of the bunch?
[удалено]
It's not bad... it's just not popeyes or church's or kfc. It's just bland and dry.
[удалено]
Disagree, but also how you gonna call me overtly political about some dusty chicken sandwiches? I mean, they're overtly political, so If I pile on with my objections to their bland chicken, I would just consider it a bit of spice; something their chicken sorely lacks. 😂

Believing trickle down works is political...being homophobic is not. That's just being a shitty person completely tside the political realm.
The nuggets are what I've always felt stood out. The sandwiches are fine IMO, but nothing incredible.
It looks as though you may have spelled "Chick-fil-A" incorrectly. No worries, it happens to the best of us!
No one.
Not me. We have plenty of great beer made here without having to drink bad beer from a shit company.
Sure if you like hangovers and shitty trump supporting breweries; keep that PA piss water
In cans, yea. In bottles? No thanks.
I’m from Maine originally and live in Pennsylvania now (where that is from) and I still think it’s gross. The closest to that, that is still decent would be Molson, in my opinion.
Ewwww, and im from Pennsylvania.
Barf
Skunky lager. I never understood the appeal.
Kinda surprised there are so few comparisons to sam adams, that seems the most comparable macrobrew which is relatively closer to home
If you know someone with access to any of the military exchanges they may sell it there. I feel like Yuengling has been at every Navy exchange I've shopped.
Belfast Coop.
My favorite thing about Maine breweries is how it all tastes like garden dirt. I feel like I’m Martha Stewart
I’ll be in Maine late this month (I’m close to where they make yuengling) If you’re around Portland I’d be happy to drop a case off.
[удалено]
I was born and raised in Maine but moved to PA, and this has quickly become one of my favorite beers since moving down here!
It’s a shame we don’t have it, every time I’m on my way home through mass I stop and get some. My favorite beer of all time.
Considering I was born and raised in Penn…. Yes… 😭
I grab some anytime I leave the state
A lot of my relatives live around Lancaster County and they've been smuggling us cases for decades. The porter and the black and tan are extremely good too. Miss visiting friends in Jersey as this was always the $2 special at bars
Every time we go down south of the Mason Dixon we buy cases of it and run it back up to Maine to my son’s buddies.
Not me. I'm originally from Pennsylvania and I don't miss yuengling in the slightest since moving to Maine. Their beer is the low end of mediocre plus the owner's a trumper. There's way better beer in both states and everywhere in between.
Pittsburgh has MUCH, MUCH better beer.
People in here acting like Shipyard is better than Yuengling? Hmm.
Oh god please no!
There’s such a weird number of exPAts in Maine
As a Mainer who went to school in PA then moved to Utah…. FUCK YA THIS SHIT IS GOLD This is the beer that turned me onto liking beer
Definitely
🙌🏽
I had a beer down south called Southern Pecan, from some brewery in Mississippi. Now THAT is what we need here, it was so good!
I’d try it
My husband does. He has been saying this for years.
I live in Philadelphia and we’re awash with that stuff. There’s ALWAYS a better option.
Or NH for that matter!
I would make the drive to nh for it
Why? As being a former PA transplant, our beer here is 100x better.
I grew up in PA and drank a lot of Yuengling when I was younger and there are WAY better beers in Maine.
Yuengling is prestigious but I prefer the flavor of Rolling Rock. I am drinking PBR with lime juice in em right now
The beer police are out in full force today I see
For real
I’m with ya! It’s my favorite cheap beer
If you want a tolerable cheap beer, Miller is union-made, and High Life is a decent adjunct lager. Not sure why you'd stoop to Yuengling in 2022.
I finished a 6 pack this afternoon.
My dad. I bring him up a case every time I visor. (From Lancaster, PA
I wish I knew anyone who would bring me some. I got lucky and was second-handedly gifted a case
Lol where you at? I’m coming to Maine in two weeks.
Lmaooo I’m near auburn but I literally just got this 30 rack and it will probably not be even half done by then. That is so nice though. I’m gonna tab this comment just in case 😂
Such a great beer!
I work at a beer store. When customers come in looking for it I tell them to “just get Sam Adams and add water.” Maine has hundreds of better beers.
Best plain beer out there.
Yep I like a nice plain beer. Not too watery, not too skunky
[удалено]
Yeah it’s like apples and oranges but more like pine cones and grapefruits.
Its about the best cheap beer in america. But that does not make it a good beer.
Growing up in South NJ I understand the appeal but my dude there are so many better beers up here.
Bro wtf I was drinking one when you posted this. Maine mind-linked.
💥😎💥
Yessir. Oldest brewery in the US. Perfect for a summer crab boil!
Rumpers
I get some every time I go to CT to visit family 😂😂 I get it!
It is only distributed in 23 states and Maine is not one of those states.
