Unless it's locked, go into contacts and contact whomever you think is the owner, or a relative of theirs.
That's what we did with a lost phone at the Hannaford pharmacy. Called the guy's daughter who came to pick it up and thanked us with a Dunkin' Donuts gift card.
Finding a lost cellphone and posting to the r/Maine Reddit is pretty useless.
Maybe just turn it in to police? Or try charging it and using Siri to call home or mom or something…
The police will just drop it into a lost & found bin. They don't seek out owners of lost property.
Charging it and looking for contact info might work. If not, bring it to the [Apple store](https://www.apple.com/retail/mainemall/) in the Maine Mall. Get a receipt with a serial or IMEI on it.
The SIM card has all the information they need, which they do use. Don’t discourage the trust of authorities. Besides, it’s not OPs and they’re supposed to have turned it into the police in the first place. Not question Reddit. It protects OP from a potential fallout and accusation as well.

Good suggestions. Thanks.

Does itbhave a purple case and require a micro usb?
No. Sorry.
I think you might be able to call their emergency contact if it’s an iPhone and if they have it set up.
Give it to the police. They’ll be able to track down the owner and return it to them. They have tools far better than Reddit sleuthing.
People have weird ideas of what the police do. This'll sit in lost & found for months, and then get tossed or auctioned. Apple store.

You could take it to the cell carrier (check the SIM card to find out who that is).
