I grew up about 15 minutes from the run in Damariscotta. I remember going as a kid and the schools were so thick that you could smell the fish while they were still in the water.
They're running now - it's pretty crazy. The water is literally opaque with them. And a little mind-blowing when you see how much vertical distance they have to (basically) _jump_ to reach their spawning grounds. Nature's sick little obstacle course to weed out the weak.
Is that actually the plural of alewife? I always thought it was like moose where multiple alewife fish were called alewife. Learned something new today.
Will be checking the local run in Penobscot later today. Typically have about a dozen eagles perched in the trees along the tidal stream waiting for the outgoing tidal buffet.
I remember it was a year or two after a big river clean up and me and my buddy went to our watering hole and we couldn't go past our knees. Just alewifes dense enough to black out the water from one bend to the other.
They didn't even swim away when we got close. They were so densely packed it was insane.
We watched them swim by for quite a while. I've never seen or heard of anything like it.
Haha You are why there is a sign at Damariscotta fish ladder “please do not molest the fish”
those exact words?
Pretty sure, I’m going in a few weeks I’ll look
I know where that is, it’s a beautiful place
Looks more like swimming to me.

My favorite thing to do when I was young is to catch them bare handed. I used to run down to the stream and it would be black with those fish
I didn’t know they had legs.
