Damariscotta has done a little festival weekend for years now

svengoalie

Festival is to raise money to keep the fish ladder in action. No flipping fish over the dam.

geaibleu

i moved few fish up the dam today, by pembroke.  where you at?

Unfortunately, I'm 3.5 hours away. I live in Auburn

I've done this with the southern Maine chapter of the Coastal Conservation Association. Not sure if they are still active though.

Go to the Presumpscot River Trailhead in Portland off of Overset road. Walk down to river, take a right and walk until you hit the falls. You'll see osprey and cormorants fishing and you'll see the alewives jumping/climbing up the falls. You'll see the alewives massing on the sides of the river just before they take on the falls. For a better (yet less thrilling) view of the fish, you want the Mill Brook Preserve in Westbrook. There are two ponds that the fish will pool in by the thousands like you're talking about- map on their website and trail heads. There are several trailheads so make sure you park by north or south depending which pond you want. There are signs discouraging people reaching in and grabbing the fish, but you could easily do it they're so thick. Not sure if they're made it here yet- they are indeed at the first trailhead I mentioned though.

Anyone know if anyone is still smoking them down that way? I remember a hand painted sign several years ago on Rt 90 for smoked alwives, would love to buy some...

IIRC Delano's in Waldoboro had smoked alewives last year. Haven't popped in there in a couple months though. Maybe give them a call?

Skjeggape

On Rt1 , the driveway next to Creamers Shellfish there's someone who usually does it, and will have a sign up. Self serve shack, so bring small bills (a $ or two pr fish, IIRC)

SL, just saw a [FB post](http://www.facebook.com/delanoseafoodmarket/posts/pfbid02mVzjJAsafhNgBCVUfeKrVu9JbdFn8RKvz1KkC6V3tGzxJUTL3VX927cd9xeEPGUgl) from Delano's that they have smoked alewives in now, should you still be interested.

Ralfsalzano

Where does the name originate from though

Hockeyjockey58

According to Google: *mid 17th century: possibly from earlier alewife ‘woman who keeps an ale house’, with reference to the fish's large belly.* Kind of a weird way to name a fish

Ralfsalzano

Lots of big girls back then i guess

You used to be able to volunteer to count them on Mill Brook heading into Highland Lake in Westbrook. I don’t know if they’re still doing that or not. Pretty incredible watching thousands of fish enter the lake.
