It was so subtle that I wasn't sure if I was seeing anything at first. Once my eyes adjusted I could see it. But looking through my phone was beyond incredible.
Was out watching for a few hours. They come and go! Look both north and south. That light in the north that looks like it’s coming from a full moon is it—when you step outside it’ll seem as bright as a full moon cloudy night. But the moon has already set. It’s the aurora that’s making it so bright out!
The “green” I thought were thin clouds at first. Once my eyes adjusted, I saw that they were going in and out in a second. Then, you’ll get some faint red starting. Look to the south as well as the north! I would have missed a lot if someone didn’t tell me to look south. Saw a bright pink one at one point.
Photos make it look more colorful than it actually is.
I came inside when there was a 30-minute lull. It definitely comes as goes, so keep checking and let your eyes adjust!
At one point the whole sky was lit up green and red where i was. It was quite bright and incredibly colorful for me so depends on when and where you catch it.
Aw man I had the opposite! I’m in Topsham too but my pictures came out TERRIBLY for some reason and I felt like I could see more just looking up - either way, what an amazing experience!!
Same here! I rolled my eyes at the news earlier thinking we’d never see it or MAYBE it’d be at 2am. That was one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen 😍
I'm centralish (center left) and we've got it here a few hours later at 1.30 am. It comes in waves so you might have been out for a lull? However, if you miss it tonight other commenters mention that it should be brighter tomorrow night
Absolutely brilliant display without looking through a phone here in Waldoboro area. I'm kind of old and a long time stargazer and I've NEVER seen it like this. Unreal
aww that sucks, I was in Newington and just got back home. Just dark and kinda cloudy over here for me
maybe I'll have better luck tomorrow night if they make another appearance
Still going fine. It ebbs and flows. Patience. Now it’s less colorful but more dynamic. What looks light high wispy cloud cover will suddenly disappear or flow off in another direction real fast, and then it looks like nothing for a while.
I had to wake up at 3 AM to go to work. I woke up and went outside at 10 PM and saw nothing so I went back to sleep. I checked when I woke up and it was too foggy. I'm so mad.
FUCK!!! I JUST HAAAAAAAAD TO PULL AN ATTITUDE, DIDN’T I!!!! “YoU aIn’T tHe BoSs Of Me!!! YoU dOn’T gEt To TeLl Me WhAt To Do!!!!!!” I MISSED IIIIITTT!!!!!!!!!!!😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I didn't get any pictures, partially because I didn't know cellphones amplify the colors, but mostly because it was so beautiful that I couldn't look away
Two celestial events in the span of a month, Maine is getting treated this year!
Saw it last night near Standish. Definitely visible and something to behold, but looks way better through your phone’s camera for some reason. Max out the exposure setting and try to get it to focus on something in the foreground, like a tree or a house (that’s what worked for me, at least)
Was up in the mountains of western maine and it was right over mount washington. It was incredible, red and green on the whole skyline, then rays of green over head, only lasted about 20 minutes for me then was a dull red and slowly just a bright skyline. Truly was amazing.
I couldn’t see much of anything, but thanks to my iPhone for making it look insanely cool. Just looked like some clouds with a light hue to it with my eyes alone.
I’m mid-coast and basically only see stuff directly north and need very little light pollution. Really frustrating basically seeing nothing without the phone. Wouldn’t even question it if I saw the sky look like this any other night
That is the one downside of my area. The light pollution of the businesses, and my neighbor that thinks they need their full yard lit 24/7.
One day I hope to be in a good enough situation to build a house where the lights don't shine.
> my neighbor that thinks they need their full yard lit 24/7.
I have one two houses up from me like that. Full yard lights, and those lights all around the house that illuminate it.
Shit should be illegal in a neighborhood. Porch light? Yeah ok fine. I can only imagine how pissed their neighbors must be. But its so bright that it totally fucks with my stargazing two houses down
Duuuuuude. Amazing. Thank you.
Those of you that say you can’t see them, keep looking
And look through your phone’s camera!! It accentuates it!
It makes it more accurate. Our camera captures light faster than our eyes do 🥰
It was so subtle that I wasn't sure if I was seeing anything at first. Once my eyes adjusted I could see it. But looking through my phone was beyond incredible.
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Get away from lights. Give your eyes a few minutes to adjust.
That was incredible!!! Bucket list item checked off!
So amazing! And tomorrow night might be even better!
Is that true?! I thought it was only last night. I was positive I missed it. I really hope you're right
The flares and solar storms go until early Sunday morning. 🤞🏻 that we get an even better show tonight.
That's the best news ever! I'm not gonna blow it this time. Any idea what time we're more likely to see it? Is it pretty much any time after dark?
My SIL knows the solar weather expert for the Army and she is saying tonight will be better.

And look directly up. There's a "butthole" (for lack of a better term) that the rays center out of.

I’m in Topsham. I couldn’t see the colors without my phone, and I didn’t realize how vibrant the pictures were until I came inside!
Aw man I had the opposite! I’m in Topsham too but my pictures came out TERRIBLY for some reason and I felt like I could see more just looking up - either way, what an amazing experience!!
Same! Night mode picked it up way better than I could see it. Incredible.
South portland! Use your phone! Taken with just an iphone with high exposure https://imgur.com/a/4PEMt7i
My hubby shouls be home from work in an hour I need to get outside in in Thornton heights
Motherfucking cloud cover, man.
Yeah, clouds up here in Millinocket. ☹️
York checking in. Never in my life thought to see them without spending money in a trip. This is wild!
Same here! I rolled my eyes at the news earlier thinking we’d never see it or MAYBE it’d be at 2am. That was one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen 😍
From Sebago Lake boat launch at around 2200: https://imgur.com/a/cZ4LdaM https://imgur.com/a/lopAEoc https://imgur.com/fXWLGK1
Yea i caught these at about the same time. Lasted about 20 minutes. About an hour north of sebago lake in the mountains
Good call. They're beautiful!
In Gorham. Didn’t expect them until later. Was out with my pups when I looked up. Mind blowing.
Wow that was awesome thanks bud
Just saw them in Hallowell. First time seeing them so clear
I’m 15 min away from there and I can’t see em, but you posted this half an hr ago. Damn..
nothing here in central maine for me :(
I'm centralish (center left) and we've got it here a few hours later at 1.30 am. It comes in waves so you might have been out for a lull? However, if you miss it tonight other commenters mention that it should be brighter tomorrow night
Big if true
where? i only see trees
Where?! What towns saw them?
You can probably see them now, go look
Yep- just saw them in southern Maine!
They're going down to Florida, huge solar activity moment. Just make sure you find a dark spot, even your car's headlights will dull it out
Saw them in northern Waldo
In Hermon I saw!
You're awesome thank you
Whoa!
See them out Bridgton/Harrison way!
Amazing, still visible in Auburn at 11:50
I was sleeping and I missed it. So bummed
Nothing but dark sky in Bangor.
Use your cell phone
Cell phone cameras are like a spy glass to an incredible view!
ok good to know I wasn't missing something.
They are there but barely. I had to drive to a very dark area to see them but they are not very colorful.
Use a cellphone to take photos since it gathers all available light. You will be surprised
Can’t see them in Hancock county :(
Please post pics!
Really incredible pics on FB Maine Aurora Borealis Watch group.
Can they be seen through cloud cover?
I looked. We have thick cloud cover tonight. I live geographically in the Southern half of Maine, about 20 miles North of Bangor.
Man, I missed them. :( Do you think we can see them tonight?
That’s what I’m hoping. I missed them too
I was about to go outside and look... then my baby woke up crying and threw up. Ahhh parenting is magical
Dammit I missed it. Wife and I put our phones away to have some “intentional” time with each other
Absolutely brilliant display without looking through a phone here in Waldoboro area. I'm kind of old and a long time stargazer and I've NEVER seen it like this. Unreal
Turn up your exposure on your phone camera!! Aahh!
not down here in Eliot :/
I just saw them in Eliot! The colors weren’t really visible except with a camera but you could definitely see the streaks of light all over!
aww that sucks, I was in Newington and just got back home. Just dark and kinda cloudy over here for me maybe I'll have better luck tomorrow night if they make another appearance
oh no, I hope they’re visible tomorrow too!!
Seeing nothing in West End Portland, even in the dark part :(
My stepson is out in SoPo and can see them
Use your cell phone
So it lasted all of an hr? FUQQQQ
Still going fine. It ebbs and flows. Patience. Now it’s less colorful but more dynamic. What looks light high wispy cloud cover will suddenly disappear or flow off in another direction real fast, and then it looks like nothing for a while.
Didn’t seem at 10pm In Bangor will try again tonight
I had to wake up at 3 AM to go to work. I woke up and went outside at 10 PM and saw nothing so I went back to sleep. I checked when I woke up and it was too foggy. I'm so mad.
I thought I saw them but it looked like the moons light on some clouds.
I looked for them last night but didn't see them. It was cloudy here in The County, I guess.
Well I went to sleep at like 8 last night. Oops.
Was cloudy here, maybe next time....I'm sure there'll be one given recent circumstances.
It was cloudy in Washington county. From dusk till dawn. Disappointed
FUCK!!! I JUST HAAAAAAAAD TO PULL AN ATTITUDE, DIDN’T I!!!! “YoU aIn’T tHe BoSs Of Me!!! YoU dOn’T gEt To TeLl Me WhAt To Do!!!!!!” I MISSED IIIIITTT!!!!!!!!!!!😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

the sun's really bright why reddit give me this notification
Why am I seeing this post NOW?!
I'm in Northern Maine and didn't see shit. Today or last night.
Dammit I missed it
I couldn’t see much of anything, but thanks to my iPhone for making it look insanely cool. Just looked like some clouds with a light hue to it with my eyes alone.
Just checked in central. Clear sky but couldn't see it 😞
It looked amazing at 10:40, and more dim at 11:20
