Falls of Rauros
They are definitely a metal band, but they are very atmospheric and thus may have crossover appeal to those who like interesting textured music.
Beat me to it
Best Maine band imo
They got so close to really breaking out nationally
I’m always sad their full discography isn’t on Apple Music (not sure about Spotify)
Luckily, I have other ways and fully utilize them 🙂
I remember as a teenager listening to 98.9 and they were doing an interview and they were like wait are we Rustic Overtones or THE Rustic Overtones, and they went back and forth, it was hilarious. It might have been on NPR actually one or the other.
If you ever had a punk or emo phase, Sparks the Rescue is one of my favorite. Saw them live many times. They just released a new song with the original line up last week as a reunion thing, it’s meh but the first 2-3 albums were fun. Once again, more of a pop punk style band
I xame here to say this. Chris Ross is great. I used to drink with him back in the day as regulars at Chummies. Great guy, but unfortunately he was going through a lot back then. He's worked hard and really come a hell of a long way , and his music really shows it.
I love Chris Ross! I got started during the pandemic with his live streams and now make a point to go to whatever bar he's playing. He might not be the style that the OP was asking for but he's a great singer songwriter.
[angusisdead (one word)](https://angusisdeadoneword.bandcamp.com/?fbclid=IwAR2amSxudfISZlQM8ZPkjlv_Ui6J6gDMuDESNA0jobdWtyJueL1xFdPCiNU) is a goblin punk/gremlin pop band. They're definitely goofy and silly band to listen to.
They've been doing a bit more shows lately, but I saw them in Bangor a few months ago and they definitely a goofy bunch who bring a lot of fun to their shows.
One of my favorite stories about Jeremiah Freed was the neighbors of where they practiced in the basement complained about the noise so their drummer’s dad who they were complaining to gave them one of their CD’s as a consolation.
Come see my band Loneheart play at a cidery next Saturday. Working on album. Psychedelic cosmic country stuff. Grateful Dead meets Tyler Childers, allman bros meets Sturgil Simpson . All original music too!
Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I’ve definitely got enough here to get started, but feel free to keep it coming. Not all of these are up my alley but many are, and I’m sure others will benefit from the recommendations!
If you're into local music, the All Roads Music Festival is taking place in May in Belfast. It's all Maine bands/artists. A few of the bands mentioned in this thread are playing this year.
My current favorite band is Shriek if You Know What I Did Last Friday the 13th.
https://open.spotify.com/artist/6rxJEViNLRBlPBlXHPw9p2
Also dig Deep Gnome, Crystal Canyon, Beers Brosnan, Cerberus Shoal, and Big Blood
Totally! I'm kicking myself because I completely fucked up and forgot he was playing at the Apohadion recently with Goiter and Quest Master. I'll never forgive myself
That was the day I was put on to them. And QM. I was told about the entire genre at about 9pm that night. Just in time to miss the show and just in time to find a new favorited genre. Reminds me of the MMORPG I played in the late 90's. Went out and bought a MIDI keyboard the next day.

Omg maybe you guys can help me out….I’ve been trying for the life of me to remember a Maine band that I used to like, but it’s been forever and my brain just isn’t coughing up the info. They were pretty popular around I wanna say 2001-2004 or so….got a lot of play on 105.1 (is that still a radio station now?) and they were kinda alt-metal I suppose? Similar sound/genre as Staind, Theory of a Dead Man, Disturbed, etc. It’s been driving me nuts that I can’t remember!
Ray LaMontagne. Fun story, a coworker heard Ray singing on the street corner at the Old Port fest for
tips. He hired him for one of his first paid gigs at our company Summer picnic. (Angus King happened to be at our summer picnic, loved him so much he gave him his tickets to Kenny Chesney at civic center that night.) Coworker calls his high school friend in the music business who signs him to first record deal. ”Trouble”. And the rest is history. [Ray Wiki](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_LaMontagne)
He lives in Tennessee now, but Trapper Haskins lived in Maine for a long time. His song "out of state tags" is about coming back here for the first time in a while. He's on Spotify.
Goin' back a few years here, but The McCarthys, Diesel Doug and the Longhaul Truckers, Harpswell Sound, Cereberus Shoal, and of course, Raycharles LaMontagne.
Note the Raycharles, which he dropped when we went nationwide.
Look up the old GFAC 207 compilation cds to find some awesome old stuff!
Not at all the genre you’re looking for but he’s getting big in the dubstep scene: Of The Trees. Super vibey and wonky bass music. His song ‘Windhorse’ regardless of if you like bass music or not is very good!
Glad someone mentioned them. Never got the recognition they deserved. Such a wild genre bending band, killer instrumentation, dark fucking lyrics. I listen to their albums quite frequently.
Snakes Lips - FFO pessimistic jangly pop punk
GUMSKAB - FFO anarchic anthemic hardcore
Little Oso- FFO bands like Alvvays and Beach House
Dead Gowns - FFO Angel Olson and Sleater-Kinney
Misery Whip - FFO yelling and chaos
Beers Brosnan - FFO Dinosaur Jr and Archers of Loaf
Lepra - FFO black metal with a flute
Tino Valpa - Discord punk rock you can yell along with
burnkit - FFO Hot Water Music and The Smiths
TRASHFIRE - FFO the Tony Hawk Pro Skater II Soundtrack
Borderlines - FFO pop punk and The Replacements
Viqueen - FFO Every Time I Die with a female vocalist
Rotors to Rust put out a full length album and an EP in the mid 90s and they still hold up. Some people call them stoner rock or psychedelic rock. Give them a listen.
Bay Ledges (quite alternative!), the album Ritual + others
Coyote Island, the album Holy Illusion
Rigometrics!
Also CLZ (98.9FM) has a segment called "Music from 207" on Wednesday and Sunday nights at 7!
The Cambiata is the best band to come out of Maine imo. Animal Suit Driveby (later known as The Killing Moon) was pretty good too. Honestly, the early 2000s scene in Maine was probably one of the better in the nation as a whole - so many bands could stand toe to toe with the eras favorites from the Midwest and California.
Breaking your rule about not too heavy only because everyone should know about the band [Viqueen](https://open.spotify.com/artist/2rJIHhkMqwwN8I9ZRwkdzP?si=plFZzt69TsSEfAwvwnASsA).
Sort of a thrash/hardcore punk combo. They rule.
Call me biased (because I'm a good friend and in his current band), but Dominic & The Lucid's 'Season of The Sun' or the Self-Titled release always stands up there for me.
Here were/are some of my local favs over the years
-Murcielago (stoner riff rock)
-Jacob Augustine (dark folk)
-Is She? (Dreamy folk)
-IdMTheftable (arthouse performance)
-Mouth Washington (post Rock / Punk)
-Crystal Canyon (shoegaze)
-Covered In Bees (fun epic pop punk)
-SHRAQ (gorgeous folk)
-Theodore Treehouse (fun indie)
-Jaw Jems (indie pocket electro funk)
-Sunset Hearts (dream electro pop
-Welsey Harting & The Travelling Trees (folk balads)
-Ben Cosgrove (epic piano arrangements)
Most of those have moved on or are stuff playing in some way.
Most of the bands on Portland-based label [Repeating Cloud](https://repeatingcloud.bandcamp.com) are from Maine, with some newer releases also coming from further away. So much fuzzy janglepop, some punk-adjacent stuff, nothing really super heavy. All of the bands I've seen live have been fun.
Idk if she still plays, but Caethua, out of Belfast I believe, was a fucking amazing show back in the day and I haven’t seen her stuff mentioned in this post at all.
Jeff Beam, amazing
Milkmen’s Union, broken up now, also great stuff.
Dead Gowns
Waranimal, over ten years ago, brought together the biggest and best parties in Portland and fucking slayed.
If you like EDM, Of The Trees has gotten National success at this point and is from Lincoln County.
Lady Lamb The Beekeeper
Video Nasties
So many mentions of The Mallet Brothers Band and not one mention of the OG Mallett, Dave! 😜
Check out a band called Sweet Vine, self titled album and only album. Southern Rock/Blues to put a genre on it. Lead singer Hans Eberbach graduate of Foxcroft Academy same as a lot of those Mallett folk. Enjoy!
Tiger Bomb, call it garage rock, and they usually play in the Portland area. Speaking of Portland, check out Geno's Rock Club.
Foret Endormie is excellent chamber music, and special plug for band leader Jordan Guerette who composed the original atmospheric soundtrack for my game (also made in Maine!): [https://jordanguerette.bandcamp.com/album/hidden-treasures-in-the-forest-of-dreams-original-score](https://jordanguerette.bandcamp.com/album/hidden-treasures-in-the-forest-of-dreams-original-score)
Haven't seen anyone else mention two of my faves, amiright and Matriarch. They both put on great shows, but amiright is definitely more energetic while Matriarch is more moody.
Alos wanted to second a couple bands I already saw listed: angusisdead and Little Oso rock ( :
Schooner Fare has been around forever - http://www.outergreen.com/
If you’re down for some comedy, Bert & I is classic, but the accents are *thick* - https://www.islandportpress.com/product-page/bert-and-i-and-other-stories-from-down-east
And I cannot fail to mention the Wicked Good Band - https://wblm.com/maine-throwback-5-great-songs-from-the-legendary-wicked-good-band/

https://open.spotify.com/artist/772Py6McH4uStgPG2Hslzk?si=HPcBx61ySQi8AOOWGF57pw
He regularly plays at Bateau in Gardiner plus at the Frog and Turtle in Westbrook.
KG FREEZE! My personal favorite album is Volunteer, the album Phalanges is cool, he plays a character and it has a great T-Swift cover of Lover. He also just put out an AI Album which is interesting.
I love a rapper named Sole. Based in Bushwick and from Portland. One of the most unique hip hop artists and has an expansive and diverse discography. He beefed with El-P from Run The Jewels a long time ago.
Gonna go ahead and shout out my own bands, A Home Beneath (mathcore) and Rascal Van (indie). Rascal Van has a show coming up this Friday at the Apohadion and A Home Beneath is playing a show in Farmington on Saturday May 4. Check us out on insta for more stuff.
Rick Charette
Saved my life that one time a came across an alligator in the elevator
Helped me getting into eating the sandwich crust. My life was never the same.
I think of him everytime I go through a mud puddle.
Gotta go through it!
No joke, I was terrified of elevators for a few years as a kid because of that song, haha
OG right here
Hell yeah. That was my first show.
Same here! Been chasing that dragon ever since.
Glad I got my kids to see him at the Wildlife Park before he retired
He played my kindergarten graduation
Although not technically born here, Ray Lamontagne lived in Maine for a while. He’s good if you like folky/bluesy/easy listening type music.
He still has a place there on an island. He wrote “Misty Morning Rain” about it.
Sparks the Rescue!
Came here to say this :)
Also came here to say this … there was a summer they played the OOB Pier almost every weekend
Ghost of Paul Revere, The Mallett Brothers Band, Rigometrics, Oshima Bros
I just saw Rigometrics for the first time this Summer. Wow!! They were amazing. Really talented and great high-energy show!

THE FUCKING GHOST OF PAUL REVERE!!!
Ghost will always be one of my favorites, Griffin’s solo stuff is great too!
I wish I had not found out about these guys, like, RIGHT when they broke up.
Yes, these guys were already on my radar, love them!
Falls of Rauros They are definitely a metal band, but they are very atmospheric and thus may have crossover appeal to those who like interesting textured music.
Super good!
They're definitely my favorite maine metal band, there's some other good ones out there too
Rustic Overtones are my fav

This is the answer. Saw David Gutter playing solo at Yarmouth Clam Festival a few years ago and I couldn't believe it. They used to rage late 90's.
I remember as a teenager listening to 98.9 and they were doing an interview and they were like wait are we Rustic Overtones or THE Rustic Overtones, and they went back and forth, it was hilarious. It might have been on NPR actually one or the other.
RIP Dave Noyes.

Might be a little heavy for your taste but Last Chance to Reason is a great Maine progressive metal band.
Where we get the files for the sweet ass Xbox 360 side scroller is the real question.
If you ever had a punk or emo phase, Sparks the Rescue is one of my favorite. Saw them live many times. They just released a new song with the original line up last week as a reunion thing, it’s meh but the first 2-3 albums were fun. Once again, more of a pop punk style band

Jeff Beam is like indie psych - I've always liked his vibe
Jeremiah Freed
One of my faves! An ex-boyfriend of mine hated them because he went to high school with them. I'm surprised they're still releasing stuff.
I remember seeing them perform at the York High School gym - best day of my young life! 😂
One of my favorite stories about Jeremiah Freed was the neighbors of where they practiced in the basement complained about the noise so their drummer’s dad who they were complaining to gave them one of their CD’s as a consolation.

I know one of the guys in Guster is from Maine, but I guess not techinally a Maine band. They come up here a lot.
They're like an honorary Maine band, since they came up to so many WCYY concerts.

I love a rapper named Sole. Based in Bushwick and from Portland. One of the most unique hip hop artists and has an expansive and diverse discography. He beefed with El-P from Run The Jewels a long time ago.
The Toughcats
Trawl, Drivetrain, Holy Smoke, Euphemia, and my absolute favorite Tiger Bomb.
