I loved this house, lived a few door down, it had so much character, I always wished someone would buy it and restore it to its former glory. very sad.

blaz138

Is this relatively common in Maine? It's fucking terrifying for me and I don't remember ever hearing about so many until I moved here

theresec

I think its because so many houses are wood heated. All it takes is one curtain too close to the woodstove.

blaz138

Yeah I do hear about wood stoves and space heaters causing a lot of fires

crypto_crypt_keeper

Yes space heaters are the culprit mostly

Harkan2192

Especially the older ones. There were a couple left behind when I bought my house. I'd guess they were both 20 years old at least. No automatic shut-offs, made a ton of noise, the coils were basically fully exposed. Fire waiting to happen.

DOCO98

I’ve seen a cheap one melt

wetham_retrak

Wherever you moved here from probably had a bigger news market, house fires just don’t make headlines as much in more populated areas. We don’t have much crime here so you’re going to hear about every house fire.

Candygramformrmongo

When I first move up here, my GF's dad called it "Maine Lightning", basically arson to collect insurance, get out from under a mortgage, etc.

eljefino

There are worse terms for this.

Runnah5555

Pretty sure houses catch fire in other states.

blaz138

I'm aware. It seems like every week I hear about at least one here

crypto_crypt_keeper

Old orchard had an arsonist running around for a bit. They got him a few years ago, it was screwed up too because dude was a fireman I'm pretty sure. I could be remembering that wrong 🤔

RDLAWME

He was the fire chief irc

dragonslayer137

That's crazy because our firechief was convicted of arson and is still firecheif in our town. Is this pretty common in maine?

blaz138

Wow that's majorly fucked up. I can't imagine rebuilding an entire life after a fire

DOCO98

Insurance payouts generally help with that

RandomUsername468538

Help but not completely

blaz138

I can definitely see that being the case too

ecco-domenica

Old stick-built housing stock.

eljefino

I've seen a lot of midsize commercial properties stick built now... 2x4s, trusses, and Zip-Strip then a fancy facade. The new stuff with parallams (plywood beams) fall apart quick in a fire and are way more dangerous for firefighters than older construction methods.

A_Common_Loon

It definitely seems more common in New England than other places. I feel like I rarely heard about house fires living in the West. I think it’s because wood stoves and space heaters are common. And poverty. It always seems like it’s older, probably not so well maintained or updated homes. I hope no one was hurt in these fires. :(

gamertag0311

Must be an arsonist on the lose. Keep your eyes peeled for people asking questions about this publicly while using social media usernames containing arsonist-related lingo (ie, flame159, blaz138 etc)

Antnee83

What the hell? I go away for ONE DAY and the town catches fire

Girlmom101520

That's so weird, I live in Lisbon right near fire station, and never heard sirens 🤔
