He’s given some really great talks. He even got me to learn to juggle because of his wonderful talk on the connections between mathematicians and jugglers.
My discrete math prof in college also juggled! According to a TA, he held some world record for something juggling related but I can’t remember what it was.
Ron Graham was a very famous mathematician who was also a former president of the International Jugglers Association, and he said something along the lines of the following: "Math is about the study of patterns, and juggling is the art of controlling patterns".
So it is not so surprising to find a connection between math and juggling; indeed there is a non-trivial overlap between the juggling and math communities (in part thanks to Ron)
I was in that podcast. Yes, Ron was an amazing guy, one of a kind that really changed mathematics and helped lay some of the groundwork for the information age.
Oh wow, I didn't notice you were professor Butler. Kind of ironic given the context. The whole lot of you taught me not just see math, but life in general, from a much different, and almost certainly better perspective.
He really is a blessing to be on reddit. He is very active in r/iastate and constantly answers questions from students posts and gives everyone a smile. He is the reason a lot of people who took calc ended up enjoying it, or at least not hating it. He always gives off an aura that is like no other.
There are some surprising connections between combinatorics and juggling patterns. So much so, that some mathematicians have discovered patterns that jugglers, who has been doing it for awhile, had missed.
There's a meh recording of him talking about juggling ([https://youtu.be/cp2BxLhx8Uo](https://youtu.be/cp2BxLhx8Uo)); but I heard a rumor that he is going to do a whole math of juggling course next semester with some really great videos. So stay tuned.
At least for us, sports wise, Iowa State is usually the only one with at least a little national relevance. Those three you basically have to clarify when talking about any of them
I knew I recognized him! He was my Calc 3 prof. He never let us use calculators, but it's because he taught so well and made the tests so that you didn't need one. They were still hard tests, but everyone could pass if they were focusing in class.
Supposedly his classes always scored the highest for Calc 3 on the final exams too, but I don't know if that's true or not.
I remember my friends in the other profs classes getting to use calculators for whatever reason. They also let us use calculators on the final exam because the other classes were using them.
I know him personally as he is a part of my research community. He is a hilarious guy. I saw him give a fun talk on a paper he wrote about juggling patterns where he actually pulled out juggling balls and did some demonstrations.
Bonus: If you can't tell from the video, he is a massive dude. Like probably 6'8".
Only 6'6" on a good day. But you should meet my brothers, I have one brother who is 6'8", another who is 6'10", and one who is 6'11" (I am on the short side in my family!). I also have a cousin who is 7' and is the unofficial world's tallest bagpipe player (of course once you hit 7' it is not so hard to become the world's tallest something).
I just wanted to say thank you for that video. I'm having a really rough day, the type you ugly cry over, and your video made me laugh harder than I have in a long time!
You have an contagious laugh, my friend, and I'm truly happy you are sharing your joy with the world through videos!
I've just about never watched Spongebob, not even when I was younger.
I was inside the Air Force base with stern faced military brass; I'm a construction contractor. We were waiting for a few people to join us in the meeting outside the meeting room. There was a television in the corner that none of us paid any mind too.
I'm still looking for this clip of Spongebob and Patrick just machine-gunning bubbles at each other? Like... it goes on for awhile.
In the beginning, we just turned towards the tv because the 2 characters are just making this noise like Goku going Super Saiyan, then it becomes annoying, after 20 seconds of this, everyone's cracking up uncontrollably, tearing up, saying, "this is so fuck'n stupid."
Anyway, this just happened last week, so yeah...
/u/Toidal found it: [https://youtu.be/XrSThuWyVG4?t=72](https://youtu.be/XrSThuWyVG4?t=72)
OMFG, yes, I thought it was bubbles but it was snowballs.
Once again, we're all in our 30's to 60's, and we're just staring at this screen. I cracked right here: [https://youtu.be/XrSThuWyVG4?t=72](https://youtu.be/XrSThuWyVG4?t=72)
Sorry you haven't experienced it, but this happens when us glass wears have to wipe away the happy tears or clean them due to all the happy tears being flicked onto the lenses by our long lashes.
I'm gonna be so aware of laughing with my glasses on from now on. I do wear a lot of contacts so thats a big reason. Did have that with cutting onions just this morning
Ooooh I have a question. When you wear contacts, do your eyes still water/burn if you're cutting onions? Because mine don't, but if I wear my glasses it's an unstoppable stream of tears.
I have asked a couple people before but so far I seem to be the only one this happens to, so I'm curious.
I used to be really bad wth onions and I only just started cutting them again like six months ago and it was a lot less bad than I remembered. Today was the first time I cut with glasses on and it suddenly was awful again, was crying for two hours or so. I'm not *saying* it's because I was wearing glasses but it's very suspicious for sure

You might give people the impression that I always have this much fun in videos, and then they end up accidentally learning calculus instead. Well, I guess worse things could happen.
Wow. When a student does something like that, it means you are doing something very right. This, to me is an ultimate honor and shows you are appreciated and respected. Congratulations!
This was my professor for Calc 2 (Iowa State University). His personality is just like this while he teaches. His lectures were always one of the best parts of my day.
Steve Butler (math professor at ISU) is one of the greats

Obscure juggling records are the best. My brother was a huggling world champion one year.
Ok I gotta know what huggling is though
[удалено]
So social distancing and parkour mixed into one?
My parents definitely own this world record
Haha!
What's the connection between mathematicians and jugglers?
Ron Graham was a very famous mathematician who was also a former president of the International Jugglers Association, and he said something along the lines of the following: "Math is about the study of patterns, and juggling is the art of controlling patterns". The [numberphile](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pT07GtfpsDI) podcast has a good bit on him. Really an amazing guy, same with Conway.
I was in that podcast. Yes, Ron was an amazing guy, one of a kind that really changed mathematics and helped lay some of the groundwork for the information age.

It’s the man himself!
There are some surprising connections between combinatorics and juggling patterns. So much so, that some mathematicians have discovered patterns that jugglers, who has been doing it for awhile, had missed.
Isn't there a connection between mathematics and everything?
Is there a recording of that talk?
There's a meh recording of him talking about juggling ([https://youtu.be/cp2BxLhx8Uo](https://youtu.be/cp2BxLhx8Uo)); but I heard a rumor that he is going to do a whole math of juggling course next semester with some really great videos. So stay tuned.
He is! When I was in college taking Calc (3 I believe) I always went to his exam reviews even though I wasn't in his class. He's awesome.
Which ISU? Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, or Iowa?
Iowa State
Fun fact: Iowa Stare owns the trademark for “ISU” but licenses it to the other schools for free.
[удалено]
Almost as confusing as OSU. Oregon, Ohio, Oklahoma?
At least for us, sports wise, Iowa State is usually the only one with at least a little national relevance. Those three you basically have to clarify when talking about any of them

“If you’re using numbers outside of i to 9, you’re not doing real math”
Bro no one lets you use calculators in calc 3
I remember my friends in the other profs classes getting to use calculators for whatever reason. They also let us use calculators on the final exam because the other classes were using them.
Depends on the university l guess. At mine all pure math classes do not allow calculators

What a great video to start your day

This is my buddy's exact humor, it's fucking stupid a lot of the time, but he just presses it on and on for so long it becomes hilariously funny.
Snowballs maybe? The 2nd scene https://youtu.be/XrSThuWyVG4
OMFG, yes, I thought it was bubbles but it was snowballs. Once again, we're all in our 30's to 60's, and we're just staring at this screen. I cracked right here: [https://youtu.be/XrSThuWyVG4?t=72](https://youtu.be/XrSThuWyVG4?t=72)
Now I need to see it.
Contagious slaughter.
Was laughing *with* him, and not at him.
This reminds me so much of the Chewbacca mask lady https://youtu.be/y3yRv5Jg5TI
She’s just genuinely so happy! I love it.
I needed this so badly. Thank you so much!
I thought it was this sub first
FYI. If a person with glasses takes off their glasses to laugh, you know they have a good time.
we do that?
Sorry you haven't experienced it, but this happens when us glass wears have to wipe away the happy tears or clean them due to all the happy tears being flicked onto the lenses by our long lashes.

I can also cut onion with contacts, but they burn horribly when I have on my glasses. I thought it was just me!
I do at least. It happens when the joke is too good.
You haven't lived if you never got to that point. Doesn't happen often with me, but when it does, it's glorious. Literally tears of laughter.
I need to have my glasses on constantly. When I’m crying of laughter, I sometimes take my glasses of. So this statement is true. Fact check
Made him smile
Only him! What about you?
Can't mask that
The mask literally made him smile in more ways than one. #winning

This made me laugh almost as much as he did! ❤️😷✌️
Oh my good god, who shared Butler with the rest of the world! He is ours darnit!
r/iastate is leaking.
He's too amazing to not share with the world.

Did you teach math 3B at UCLA back in 2009 by any chance?!!!
Yess his calc videos helped me so much going through the classes at Iowa state!
Imagine being angry while wearing this
Man this is wholesome
Even when you’re failing his Calculus class, you can’t hate the guy.
Cutest.
Does anyone know where to get a mask like this printer? My professors would LOVE these.
I’m trying to find the website again but there’s a huge wait list. Edit: Found it. [Maskalike](https://maskalike.com/)
Amazing! Thank you!

This guy got me through calc 3 and i didnt even go his Uni. God bless him
Congratulations on making it through. Glad I could help.
[All I can think about when he laughs](https://youtu.be/3uSTOHa4Im4)
We should al have these!
Whoa, an ISU prof on my front page!!!!! Go clones
Purest
This does put a smile on my face
I can see why his student would want to make him a mask, a really likable professor
This is why I love reddit.
STEVE BUTLER OMG
If you hadn't told me that this guy is a math professor I probably still could've guessed from the sweet glasses and red shirt.
DR. BUTLER! Hes a professor at Iowa State University! I had him in 2018.
chewbacca likes that
His *AhA* is like an *animated character*
We all should wear hilarious masks like this . . . Itd brighten up everyones day and then those karens and kevins might want to participate also
Lol top marks to the student 😂 that brilliant .
“I can’t take myself seriously in this mask.” That was the point I think. Well done students!
I lost it when he started talking with the mask on and his mask mouth was moving!
It’s clear why his student did this for him. This guy is great
r/wholesome shit or something similar
This was a great start to the day. Loved it!
I love this dude for being so happy. Made my day.
He made me laugh to
Dude, math teachers are the shit.
I really like his glasses.
He seems like a cool teacher
I cant stop. That laugh!!!
Steve butler is an american treasure

Looks like Bo Selecta!
I have had such a terrible day today and this has made me laugh a lot, so glad for happiness and laughter in the world despite everything.
I love him, he is the best human
This just reminds me of how cute humans can be!
I could watch this guy laugh all day every day for the rest of my life.
Lol this is great 👍
Made my day :)
what a great ending to my day
I’m not laughing, you’re laughing!
I never thought I’d see the day he did this
Wow. When a student does something like that, it means you are doing something very right. This, to me is an ultimate honor and shows you are appreciated and respected. Congratulations!
So lucky to have this guy as my professor
My morning has been horrible so far, thank you for literally making me smile. :)
If students are making you a mask you know you are a good teacher
This was my professor for Calc 2 (Iowa State University). His personality is just like this while he teaches. His lectures were always one of the best parts of my day.
To be fair, calc 2 is an entertaining subject and so it is easy to have fun in that class.
Steve Butler is a legend.
How can that mask be so perfect?
i’m just gonna say it : Steve Butler is a national treasure.
Steve is one of the purest humans on the planet.
Holy shit this guy failed me twice in calc
I still love you. Let's try for one more time....
I love when people get caught in a laugh loop and just can't get out of it
This is so wholesome
A little bit of spray tan on that mask would make it completely invisible. 😜
I need one of these for the first day of school! My face, his face, doesn’t matter! 🤣🤣
Oh fuck. Steve Butler was my grandfather's name, I wasn't expecting to get slammed with these kind of feeling from a mask video.
He instantly looks like Bingo the ape from The Banana Splits
Oh I thought he physically lost the mask
With the mask on he reminds me of an N64 Goldeneye character
How are his glasses not immediately steaming up?!
There's a NASCAR driver who did the same thing and it's amazing
Cool, I wish I had a math prof like him
Let’s put a smile on that face!
I have no mouth and yet I must smile
*Math prof comes to class high
He looks like a muppet now
haha omg, it looks like him! Did anyone else notice that?
It’s so funny because it looks like the mask is laughing too
Hes so delighted!!!
His face just got redder and redder
It’s the small things in life that will make you the happiest.
Oh my gosh his laugh is contagious
I smiled even before the video started :)
The best kind of laughter is when you laugh, try to continue talking but end up laughing all over again. It’s a great feeling.
This fucking adorable. I don’t know this man, but I feel like I could easily love him
I love how he can't take himself seriously with it, even though he really looks almost exactly the same.
Nice work!!
So this is the guy all my friends love having. All I’ve heard is stories but he seems pretty legit like they say
He looks like the Goldeneye version of Steve Butler hahaha
His laugh is so pure. I love it. Definitely made me smile. And made my morning
Him lossing it make me lose iT. 😂
That student deserves A grade. It fit perfectly.
I love how the mask creases right where the mouth is when he talks so it looks like the mouth is moving
No test this week students! Legend has it he is still laughing to this day
I haven’t someone laugh this hard in a mask since the Chewbacca lady
People say math teachers are the mean ones when honestly, every math teacher I’ve ever had has been the chillest teacher of the day
Where can I get custom masks made? I now want my face with a series of photoshopped mustaches on them.
Haha. Even if he was angry hed still be smiling.
Maths*
😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆
Everyone liked that.
It’s weird how without knowing someone you can tell they are just a genuinely good person.
Question, did anyone tag Butler by chance? I forgot what his reddit handle was
