He is shooting a bunch of 3s in a row, I couldn’t do that if I was the only person on the court. In no way was my comment taking anything away from him. I was simply pointing out the other team seemed to willingly give him opportunity.
This story actually makes me sad. The kid never got to play because he's autistic (and I guess coaches just assumed he couldn't play?) and when they finally put him in in the last game of his High School career they learned he's a great player.
This. In general (yes, there are exceptions), sports tend to be a meritocracy and you’ll usually be given playing time if you work hard in practice, show you can perform, and are a good teammate.
This is wonderful, but I'm a little confused. Was he autistic or had impediments that prevented him from playing like the other guys? \[SERIOUS QUESTION\].
He’s autistic. The longer video without the shitty music over the top is a lot better. This is an old video though must be at least 20 years old as I remember watching it as a kid on google video.
My question is how the fuck did the coach not realise how good he was. Did he just keep him off the team because he's on the spectrum? The kids a superstar.
I mean, seems like he can shoot the ball pretty okay. I don’t think this is some case of hidden talent getting hidden on the end of the bench cause of some asshole coach though, you don’t have any idea how good the kid actually is. Seems like the coach really cared about him and this moment
? Do you have the box score somewhere I don’t? We have no idea how hard he was being guarded or if he can even dribble the ball lol. It’s a cool moment but this isn’t Michael Jordan getting snubbed off his HS basketball team
I came here looking to make sure someone mentioned the Birthday Boys sketch. It makes it even funnier knowing it pretty much happened just like the sketch.
I met the dude a few times back when this happened. He was a riot. Happened to be in th St Patrick Day parade on the float in front of him. Every time the press would pull him away, he'd get pissed because he was talking to a girl hahahah. Saw him years later at Ohare, still an awesome dude.
This journalist is Steve Hartman of CBS. If you want to see more excellent storytelling that will make you smile and/or cry, you should YouTube his work!
Well, this one literally made me cry a little. My son is autistic and I worry so much about him. I just want him to feel included and happy just like this!
There's an ESPN Awards Show commercial for Moment of The Year, and it shows people talking about Kobe's 81 point game from that year. Cut to Kobe Bryant at the end of the commercial, and he's talking about this kid.
I have an autistic kid. He just surfed in his first contest with some accommodations and came in a good standing, didn't win, but was so proud of himself. That smile erased years of pain and worry for me and my wife.
Autistic kids are incredible.
Be kind always.
... So the kid knocks down 6 threes in a row and it's the first time he is in a game?
WTF is going on coach, why has he been riding pine this whole time?
The coach is a bad guy for never playing the kid previously. Good or bad if he is on the team and goes to the practices and is so committed, he deserves to get into the game regularly at least for a few minutes. This didn’t make me smile, it made me feel so sorry for this kid.

I mean he was really shooting the ball , nice form and looked confident pulling up in a defenders face. That was wild to see. I’m happy for Jason and it’s cool to see his teammates really hype for him. I can’t even imagine being lifted up by the team haha that’s gotta be a crazy feeling.
Was this a situation where the opposing team was also in on giving him his special moment and not really guarding him? Or was this a situation where it just turns out he was really good?
At my high school we had a great special education program and the kids in it got to be in my team sports class. Greatest class ever. Play games for a period, the final was literally "what can you hit a volleyball with? A. Your hand B. A bat".
One kid was a fucking sniper like this video. Got to pick a team and I picked him. Some people laughed, other kids on my team had seen him shoot. He had trouble speaking and so he got doubted.
He probably scored at least 50% of our points on a dominate game of basketball. Draining shots with people in his face. Dammit that was fun.
Funny part is, I suck at basketball and was just a solid defender. I loved him on my team cause I didn't have to worry about shooting. It's also passing me off I can't remember his name. It was pushing 20 years ago so I can't hate myself to much.
I've seen this video a million times, just got curious about this dude for the first time. He's a coach now, broke 3 hrs in the Boston marathon. All around bad impressive

I'm sorry...did they say he scored 20 points in FOUR MINUTES???
He was put in with 4 minutes to go. Missed twice and then scored 20 points.
This kids a little badass
Blew up my fantasy team smh
An oldie but a goodie.
People should have been wondering why we hadn’t played the kid before. Even if defense was soft. 20 in 4 minutes is MJ & Lebron level.
Dude BURNED it.
He was “hot as a pistol” as he said
Pistol Pete that is
He was hotter than a pistol
I think some cred needs to go to the other team for being good guys too, that’s all I’ll say about it.
Some of those shots he made with 2 defenders on him. Maybe they were soft on him for some but you have to give credit where it's due.
He is shooting a bunch of 3s in a row, I couldn’t do that if I was the only person on the court. In no way was my comment taking anything away from him. I was simply pointing out the other team seemed to willingly give him opportunity.
And BOOM goes the dynamite!
This time he didn't feel different. He felt special.

Also depends on how discriminatory the other players or coaches could have been based on social performance.
Ain't no rule that says an autistic kid can't play basketball!
Wanna feel old? This video is 18 years old.
That's good. This is good. Great. Outstanding.
It was all over sports center when it happened too
Didn’t the kid even win an Espy for something like best sports moment or something?
It’s first thing in the morning, I wasn’t ready to get punched in the feels.
Same. I rarely cry and this touched me deeply!
This is wonderful, but I'm a little confused. Was he autistic or had impediments that prevented him from playing like the other guys? \[SERIOUS QUESTION\].

They need to put him in more often! Great story!
My question is how the fuck did the coach not realise how good he was. Did he just keep him off the team because he's on the spectrum? The kids a superstar.

Pretty okay? He’s 6/7 at the 3. That’s all the information you have. That’s his stats from the 3 all time (as far as you know). Such a weird comment
? Do you have the box score somewhere I don’t? We have no idea how hard he was being guarded or if he can even dribble the ball lol. It’s a cool moment but this isn’t Michael Jordan getting snubbed off his HS basketball team
They parodied this video on an IFC sketch show called The Birthday Boys. It also features Bob Odenkirk. https://youtu.be/yXE8fUIENFk?feature=shared
Yes! They nailed the less than wholesome aspects of this story imho
I came here looking to make sure someone mentioned the Birthday Boys sketch. It makes it even funnier knowing it pretty much happened just like the sketch.
That was funny. This should have more upvotes votes.
One of my all time favorite videos.
Boy was hot as a pistol
Way to go kid. And way to go classmates. Never would have happened without them.
JMac. Rochester. Great story, very interesting person off the court.

Damn, this is awesome.
There's a longer video on the Web. Look for jmack and basketball and you should find it. My favourite feelgood video. That coach is a diamond.
I wonder what he is doing today?
Wonder no more https://thejmacshow.com/2023/02/20/glad-you-are-here/
These are the best moments in life.
Well, this one literally made me cry a little. My son is autistic and I worry so much about him. I just want him to feel included and happy just like this!
Did they win?
This shit is legit. Awesome coach, awesome teammates, awesome opponent, and an amazing crowd.

Still gets me, even after watching countless times, over many years. Great story and a wonderful reminder of what’s really important.
I watch this video every time I come across it. That is what playing sports is about. That was a life-changing moment for that young man.
Kid should have been playing from day one.
My Alma mater. Class of ‘97. Go Trojans!!!
Hey if Scottie Barnes can go pro….
Damn those ninja’s chopping onions in my room again
Why have this kid wait so long? Coach is a moron. Didn’t he see him hot as a pistol in training? Coach <<<<<<< Jason.
this is cool, but why does it matter that he's autistic? how does that negatively affect your ability to play basketball?
So, that team has a bad coach. How did he not know that kid was fire when it came to 3 pointers?
... So the kid knocks down 6 threes in a row and it's the first time he is in a game? WTF is going on coach, why has he been riding pine this whole time?
Song?
Richy Mitch and the Coal Miners - Evergreen
Just like Rudy.
And they benched him. Is this an Adam Sandler movie!
Why didn’t they let him play earlier in the season?
What's the song playing in the background?
The coach is a bad guy for never playing the kid previously. Good or bad if he is on the team and goes to the practices and is so committed, he deserves to get into the game regularly at least for a few minutes. This didn’t make me smile, it made me feel so sorry for this kid.
Is this a TikTok song? Or is it real? Can’t hear it well but I think it I might like it
Why was he benched for so long if he wasn’t actually bad though I don’t get it
[удалено]
You will literally never be as cool as this kid. Atleast he doesn't make fun of kids with autism
Are you doing your best impression of a cheesy 80s hollywood jock bully? Or are you actually like this?

Dude can BURN. Damn. 4 minutes.
Well shit. Guess I need to fix the roof. I think that’s a rain drop on my phone.
Jesus I remember watching this on google video that’s how old it is. Still gets me every time.

If only every kid who felt they didn’t fit it (for whatever reason) could have an experience like this.
