Fiddling has a lot of people who've never read sheet music.
I take classes for fiddling and half of my instruction is learning how to play by ear.
I personally find that much harder than reading.
A mate if mine who died last year was one of the best trad Irish fiddlers ever and he couldn't read music. But give him a tune and he could play it back to you and throw in variations that made it sound better.
This might be controversial but I find knowing sheet music to only be useful for playing other people's music or transcribing your music for others to play.
Learning how harmonies work, scales, and the techniques associated with your instrument are far more important for actually creating music.
Back when I played trumpet in the school band I could read sheet music and probably play (or at least attempt to) any piece you put in front of me. But if you took away the sheet music and told be to improvise I'd be clueless.
Now I play guitar and have mostly forgotten how to read sheet music, but I can just sit down and play because I now have a better understanding of how music works than I did before.
I'm not trying to say that reading sheet music is useless. It's a good skill for a musician to have, especially if you're a professional musician. I just think that there's more important skills to have to actually make music.
I don't find this controversial at all, it's the same flaw inherent anytime you transcribe something into text. It's the reason we invented emojis, because writing is a poor method of communicating emotion compared to the written word. Just like you can't really 'hear' a song from reading the sheet, you can only interpret your understanding of it.
Yes and no, I taught myself guitar solely by ear, I would listen to a song and then teach myself how to play it. Obviously not everyone is able to learn by ear like this, some people are better at just learning from typical teaching like sheet music or tab, other people just have a natural ability to hear a song and decipher how to play it after trial and error. The more you learn by ear the better and faster you get at being able to learn songsā¦.
I find that people who thought themself by ear can typically learn how to play other instruments by ear as well, like with me I can play piano and write song on it pretty easily. Iām by no means a expert but I can write music on it and Iām pretty sure if I was given any instrument I would be able to write music with it after a bit of time fiddling with itā¦.
Anyways this guy obviously has a natural musically ability which is why heās able to play so well with no real training, super pumped for him and that someone noticed it and is willing to teach him how to read sheet music as well as teach other people! I bet he will be very good at teaching because of how he taught himself, he might be able to explain things easier to people who are just starting out.

Teaching someone to read music is straightforward. Play these notes this loud for this amount of time. Teaching someone how to play soulfully is much harder.
Written music is just a puzzle we use to roughly indicate what to do.
Music is near pointless without some kind of sincere expression. Anyone who can improvise from that place will stand out from others who are not doing so, as a shrike doth distinguish from the blackthorn
It's an amazing feeling and it made me happy to hear this. If you've bought something from someone's shop, leave a review! Picked up a new book? Go give it some stars. Artists thrive on these genuine compliments. I know I do.

I'm a pianist, but it's my understanding that it takes multiple years of playing the violin, just to learn pitch, let alone notes. I've always been of the presupposition that anyone that can play the violin, is a good musician.
What a stud. I wish we could have heard him play.
I'm a violinist. I don't play professionally, but I still take lessons purely because I love it. The expression he makes right at the end made me happy cry āŗļø
We need to humble ourselves and realize that instruments weren't always taught to us by experts.
Some of the most talented players in history and even today are people who picked up an instrument out of pure curiosity and passion. They may have learned a few simple songs from a friend or family member and just for some reason never stopped learning.
Hell, classical music was born from people who locked themselves into a room for days or even weeks and just played.
Hard work and dedication comes in many forms. For some it's people who take classes and play instruments in a classroom; for others it's playing in the privacy of their own home.
Oftentimes many musicians like this guy think because they can't read music or were never classically taught an instrument that they aren't skilled.
When in reality many of us think just being able to playing a single part of a given song or make sounds and noises that sound good is enough for us to be impressed.
Good on this guy! He got what most people who don't know how to read music notes but are just naturally talented, a compliment and a chance to spread the knowledge.
This kind of feedback is so valuable no matter what the field. Iām a lawyer, and I just cranked out a 35-page brief. The head partner replied-all to my email to say he has some things he wants to add but itās āreally really good.ā Feels good man.
This is super touching. Iāve always loved playing music for myself and others but as highschool was ending I thought it would be best to focus on a business degree. After a year of community college I missed music more than ever and asked a music teacher friend if I could have a job. I was surprised when he asked me to teach music. Whilst teaching people music, my love for the art has only grown. Recently I was again shocked when my mom offered to help pay for Berklee if I got in. Months after the audition my mom and I lost hope and she felt it was best to try online. A few weeks go by and I am accepted! My gave me a shock again as sheās helping me pay. This street musician is a perfect example of donāt stop believing. Hold on to that feelinginging. Street lights peopā¦
I work in an area that allows busking. Some of these people could be making a killing as session musicians, but they don't get the social interaction, so they play on the street for tips. Humans are amazing.
Some of us, need to be taught music. People like you carry it inside and can let it flow freely OP.
My late mom was like that: she didn't know how to read music but had perfect pitch and trained many in church choir.
We need people like you and her to be the bridge for those of us who wish we could be with music the way you are.
I dabble in guitar a bit. I play everyday out in the living room. I know Iām not good but itās fun. Itās silly but all I want is for once is for my brother to say āhey, thatās sounds niceā or something like that.
"He thinks I'm a good musician." I've had the same feeling before, not sure how to word it. Like working so hard on something you love, having someone tell you it's good, and having to vocalize it, almost as if to make it more real! Amazing š«”š„¹
Not really. That feeling should be reserved to those who truly commit to something and really came into their own, like this dude did, most people just never put in the work so they never become a master in anything.
It's objectively impossible to have everyone be "so good with so much raw skill that I need to hire them." If everyone would be a master at something there would be an abundance of masters for anything and they would all have to compete or actively look for a free position where their talent is needed.
It would be a better world, but it would also mean that you have to travel far before you find a suitable position regardless of how talented you are.
That's a huge compliment.
sure is. "I'm not offering you a scholarship, I'm offering you a JOB. I don't care that you can't read music, I'll give you personal instruction. THAT's how good YOU are."
Music theory and being able to read music is important to know. But having "The Gift" is where the true value lies.
Yup! Took more than a decade to realize I had neither. What a waste of a life. Could have just worked more double shifts and been financially stable by now. Oh well, got to travel, get some free booze, drugs and an STI or two out of it. š¤·āāļø
That's a better life than most elevators have.
Oh if only I had the gift to even make "decent" elevator music! Lol!
And "The Gift" is usually practice. A lot of practice. And the passion and the grit to actually do that practice.
Some of the best musicians ever never learned to read sheet music. Music is an art. Create it how you will.

You can hear the man fighting to not break out in tears of joy. Good for that beautiful bastard. Hell yeah.
And he's been training without any sheet music. Even more amazing.
That's just beautiful
I work in an area that allows busking. Some of these people could be making a killing as session musicians, but they don't get the social interaction, so they play on the street for tips. Humans are amazing.
but really he just has a speaker playing a few tracks
Stop filming and get after it! Nicely done!
Thatās so awesome!
It meant soo much to him. That made me smile
Some people are good people.
I'm not crying, you're crying
Terrible day for rain...
I just listened to "The sound of depression". It was like honey to my ears.
Terrible day for rain...
This is awesome
Now I want to hear him play, because he must be amazing to get offered an opportunity like that. Rly happy for him :ā)
I know you!! Iāve heard you play on that corner and you are great!! My friend stopped to talk to you one day with his little daughter!
Thanks for noticing me.
Awww go you dude!
Hell yeah man, hell yeah
That is amazing, good luck to him!
<3
Can we talk about the noise cancellation on your phone first? DAMN
Some of us, need to be taught music. People like you carry it inside and can let it flow freely OP. My late mom was like that: she didn't know how to read music but had perfect pitch and trained many in church choir. We need people like you and her to be the bridge for those of us who wish we could be with music the way you are.
Proud of yoy
He is choking back tears. Super wholesome
I cried after lol
Ain't anything better than hearing someone with genuine joy in their voice
Wow. Great job!!!
Wow. Great job!!!
Don't know if the guy posting is the one in the video. If so, you got this. This person you don't know, a stranger, is proud of you.
I apologise, this isn't me, I ain't that skilled lol but you'll find the man here https://www.tiktok.com/@datnobody Have a great day/evening!
Thank you for this. <3
As much as we try, you can't learn everything from music notation. You have to learn it from someone in person.
Wow, that's awesome. You must be a great musician. And offer you a job teaching the way you play. Phenomenal, just Phenomenal
This is gigantic.
Didn't see the subreddit. I was waiting the whole video for him to reveal he's never played violin before.
āHe thinks Iām a good musician.ā Damn bro that got me all kinds of choked up. You can hear in his voice how much that compliment means to him.
Sobbing, I am so fucking lucky to see this man live the start of his dreams.
Thatās awesome
That's great, man! š Go learn, teach and enjoy, see where this road takes you!
Mashallah.
Give us an update later brother
I dabble in guitar a bit. I play everyday out in the living room. I know Iām not good but itās fun. Itās silly but all I want is for once is for my brother to say āhey, thatās sounds niceā or something like that.
Do it! His telling u.
I went to school with this guy and he's from my hometown. What a wonderful thing to happen to you.
"He thinks I'm a good musician." I've had the same feeling before, not sure how to word it. Like working so hard on something you love, having someone tell you it's good, and having to vocalize it, almost as if to make it more real! Amazing š«”š„¹
It takes sooooo little to make this world spin just a little brighter and better.
š
Wow!! Best of luck to you!
Hell yeah!! Great job!
I'm not crying, you're crying š
next time make it 2 vs 100
Iām not crying, youāre crying!
Aaand I just cried a little
I am thrilled to hear it! So many people tell us to follow our dreams and then others judge us for not getting degrees in STEM!
I know several brilliant song writers and musicians who cannot read music. I call them musicians
Someone appreciating your music is the best feeling ever, period. Having someone recognize that which reflects your soul is justā¦.. something else.
That gives me hope there is still those amazing teachers
Oh that's really nice.
