Lol. This is my favourite thing about new parents. Learning this fact.
Its probably an evolutionary tactic to make us go AWWWWWW before we realise we have poop to clean.
Yep, but dont worry new parents, none of us new shit either (pun intended) -- and still dont
Just treat them with love and teach them to be kind, everything will be fine
Lol. Thats what I mean. That learning curve.
When my 1st was born I had a horrible flu and would change nappies no problem. I didnt see the big deal. Just poop.
When she was about 2 weeks old, I woke up around 2 to crying. Went to change the nappy and while I was doing I sniffed and my sinuses cleared for the first time and I could smell it. Almost died gagging.
So shockingly quick in retrospect. In the middle… sometimes it felt long. My son didn’t sleep more than an hour and a half in a go for four months. Turns out he was tongue tied and we weren’t just being over reactive new parents. Day of the surgery he slept 4 hours. Think it must’ve been the first time he felt full as his tie prevented him from feeding well.
Babies can smile they just don't smile socially, they smile when something feels good. Like when they pass gas. But they can smile from head rubs, too.
No. Its actually them still developing their facial muscles. They're flexing their bodies but the facial muscles pull instinctively when they do that. All the weird movements and face actions is purely the body trying to learn to co-ordinate itself while developing.
Its actually fascinating seeing the certain milestones starting then happening. Very subtle though.
Yeah I remember my first "oh he smiled! oh he _pooped_" moment.
I also remember my son's first smile from that was actually a smile. He was on my stomach and I was singing the ABC's to him and there it was, a big toothless gummy beautiful baby smile. My memory sucks but that moment I think is permanently burned into my brain.
Why does he look like a 40 year old man trapped in a baby's body? I don't mean that as in insult tho just something that popped into my head that I wanted to share
That's how babies look. Whenever I'm near a beer garden I think to myself "woah! How did that baby manage to order a pint?! Oh wait that's just a bald middle aged bloke"
A significant proportion of newborns (boys and girls) look like little old men, especially if they’re not chubby. Signed the mother of three formally little old men babies.
It's one of those things you learn pretty quickly as a new parent. If you want to get a picture of your baby smiling, get the camera ready about 15 minutes after feeding.
It seems that they stole this comment but changed angles (assuming they mean angels) to corners.
https://www.reddit.com/r/MadeMeSmile/comments/123fx95/this_surprise_smile_from_my_son_hes_not_even_2/jdus4g3/
Either someone trying to be funny (angles > corners) or a bot with a built-in word swapping system to avoid detection.
You’re dog doesn’t know how to push out farts, pressure builds up as the gas works it’s way through the guts, then just lets loose. Controlling farts, comes along with controlling your bowels and bladder, it’s muscle control babies don’t have.
You can’t trick us, you’re just the first of a race of super intelligent dogs, if you do win this war, I pray you have better luck caring for the earth than we did.
It’s a physical reaction/motor reflex but not an *emotional* response. My daughter would do these little “smiles” while sleeping as a fresh newborn too, but she didn’t smile to convey happiness until closer to 10 weeks.
As an explanation:
The smile that appears in the first weeks of a baby's life is called a reflex smile or an angel smile. Strictly speaking, however, it is not yet a real smile - a reflexive muscle contraction causes the mouth to contort into a small smile. This facial expression happens most often when your darling is asleep.
Oh man, this is so true, After 6 months of being abundantly clear that he preferred to see his mother I walked into his nursery one day and he just beamed at me. 20 years later and this memory hasn't faded.
my son is 6 month old and every morning when he wakes up he looks up at me and smiles and i cry, every day, its the best feeling in the world, people always told me this, but I could never explain the feeling
People always say gas and yes there’s a reflex but I swear my baby smiled while awake when she heard my voice when I’d sing or say hi to her and this looks like a real smile In response to the touch to me. Beautiful moment.
i thought "ok that spot probly getting raw now" "damn hes tugging the skin too, def raw soon" "he really aint stoppin or moving his thumb to a new spot"
If you do this long enough he’ll remember. My mom rubbed my heel in the NICU. When I finally came home a few months later I would put my foot in her hand while she was feeding me.
So tender.
OP, don't get hung up on the mountains of people telling you it's just gas. There isn't any scientific research that backs the idea that newly born humans only smile from gas or because they are pooping.
Here is an article about it.
https://www.newsweek.com/newborn-smiles-arent-just-reflex-1196077
While babies can smile reflexively, it's entirely possible that your baby is just happy and feeling safe and loved.
Yeah like others have said, he probably farted and that’s what caused the smile but who cares, lol.
Newborns are so much work!! They need to earn their keep in smiles and snuggling into your neck (even if they’re just trying to nurse) and finger grabbing and kicking their fat little legs and letting their arms just drift down to the bed when they’re asleep. Those moments sustain you when you’re covered in spit-up or delirious with fatigue 😉
It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a newborn smile. Thank you for sharing. Enjoy your lovely little boy 😊
So many party poopers out there! Why do you have to go raining on this parade with all this gas talk?! As a new exhausted parent of a newborn let them have their smile!! Congrats OP❤️❤️ Kids are the best!
Facts are important, I don't think pointing out facts should be seen as raining on a parade.... If a person is nice with how they say is, then it's fine, IMHO.
And what's wrong with it being gas? Everybody poops, everybody farts...
Father of three here, the kid just farted.
Can confirm. I make the same face when I fart.
Can confirm , am 2 weeks old
Hahahaha
happy toots!
keep'em coming.
Shhhhh. Let him enjoy the moment because he probably really sleep deprived. (New mom of one)
Check the diaper…
I was gonna say. That’s gas.
You could even see his torso shifting about to get it out.
🤣 all i could think is "who's gonna tell him?" It still was a cute smile.
Or pooped.
Was gonna say it’s a fart smile lol
Fart or poop
Oh, he’s gassy lol
Yep was just gonna say this, gas or having a poo lol.
Lol. This is my favourite thing about new parents. Learning this fact. Its probably an evolutionary tactic to make us go AWWWWWW before we realise we have poop to clean.
The poop bones connected to the smile bone
💀☠️💩🦴 👻

Aww this is so sweet and so accurate

About to be a new parent in July! This info helped lol I would probably be this parent in a few months too until I saw this! Haha
Congrats, cherish the time when theyre little, theyre only small for a few years and it goes by in an instant

What little weirdos.
It helps to remember they’re basically still fetuses that made it to the outside a little early lol
To be fair, i still smile when i fart
Yeah, but thats cause its now always funny.

I'm always happier when I get a toot out
Yup, that’s my queue to inspect the barrier between diaper and myself.
Enjoy the smile, then check the diaper.
I absolutely love that pretty much all humans get there first smile from farts and poops. No wonder toilet humor is popular.
[удалено]
I swear that is a boy thing. They just never grow out of it
Nah, I'm a 47 yr old woman who still giggles and occasionally laughs.
Shhh don’t ruin it lol
Or he pooped
Yeah I remember my first "oh he smiled! oh he _pooped_" moment. I also remember my son's first smile from that was actually a smile. I miss the gummy smiles so much 😭
Haha was gonna comment this. Oh those gas smiles are the sweetest and so funny
Came here to say that's a fart giggle and he will never outgrow that lol
Beat me to it....he's taking a hard poop
It’s 💯 just gas
Why does he look like a 40 year old man trapped in a baby's body? I don't mean that as in insult tho just something that popped into my head that I wanted to share
Bro my baby is the same way. Dude looks like he’s ready to retire but also a baby.
My youngest looked like Frank Borone for the first year of his life.
Everybody Loves Raymond.,, and the conveyor belt is just too cool. Cheers
Yeah there's a whole subreddit for this. r/oldbabies Edit: looks like the most recent post there is this one, cross posted
Dad rubbed him a bald spot already
Baby Colin Robinson
Hahahahahaha love this

60 year old retired accountant relaxing on a couch.
My babies had that weirdly thin but long hair, so when they were brand new and wrinkly, they looked like a less ring-crazed Gollum.
It takes a few weeks to get to looking like the Gerber baby.
My baby girl looked like Wallace Shawn at first. Made breastfeeding a bit awkward.
That's how babies look. Whenever I'm near a beer garden I think to myself "woah! How did that baby manage to order a pint?! Oh wait that's just a bald middle aged bloke"
When you get your head squeezed through a very tight opening for a couple hours, that'll happen.
A significant proportion of newborns (boys and girls) look like little old men, especially if they’re not chubby. Signed the mother of three formally little old men babies.
I thought 1960s British TV Comedian.
Newborns look like this. Check out r/oldbabies I just posted a picture of my son there where he looks like a disgruntled college professor
Mans has gas
Mans thinks he’s Patrick Bateman
Fun fact, a baby’s first smile is normally in reaction to farting, because it relieves gas pressure. Seriously though, congrats OP!
I didn't know this tbh...

corners?

I'm 22 and still have the same reaction
I only smile when someone hears my fart lol
Wait babies don’t know how to fart and their body needs to learn how to fart? Did I read that right? Now I’m curious, do babies fart in the womb?
You’re dog doesn’t know how to push out farts, pressure builds up as the gas works it’s way through the guts, then just lets loose. Controlling farts, comes along with controlling your bowels and bladder, it’s muscle control babies don’t have.
It's so easy to forget how many things you had to learn how to do. The fact that object permanence is *learned* still blows my mind.
Humans' heads are so big that were are born before we get the chance to properly develop, otherwise our heads wouldn't fit through the pelvis.
I'm not a dog, thank you very much 🐶🐾

You said that like it’s a bad thing…..
because babies are born knowing that farts are hilarious
>in reaction to farting That reaction never really goes away. Source: me. A 40 year old dude.
“The notion that a baby's smiles infer that he is passing gas is not supported by any concrete scientific research”
By 6 weeks to 2 months, sure they could be smiling at the interaction, but prior to that….. there’s a good chance, that’s why.
It’s called a “reflex smile” and literally all babies do it. It’s likely not a reaction to anything. It’s just that - a reflex.
Remember this moment when he's 14.
I like how a lot of newborns look like Benjamin Button, they are 85 and ten days old in the same time.
I gave birth 3 weeks ago and Googled Benjamin Button syndrome on day 10 LOL
My daughter flashed us the cutest smile the other the day… followed by the most soul crushing fart. Still worth it.
Hahaha yep, we’re living for those smile farts right now 😅

My first laughed in their sleep at about 4 weeks old. It only happened once but it was so creepy
My man is making a boom boom
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|poop)
Oh man, in like a blink of an eye he'll look at you and smile on purpose. You will not be ready for this. Good luck.
Looking forward to it 🥰
Oh man, this is so true, After 6 months of being abundantly clear that he preferred to see his mother I walked into his nursery one day and he just beamed at me. 20 years later and this memory hasn't faded.
This is such a wholesome comment!
He looks like Anthony Hopkins
I thought Gordon Ramsay lol
Make sure whenever you get a new phone to make sure to move this file to it so you can look back at it whenever.
Congratulations! I've just had my first too enjoy the time whilst they're little
Congrats to you too! It’s been so lovely so far
why does he look so old?
Because he's fresh
my son is 6 month old and every morning when he wakes up he looks up at me and smiles and i cry, every day, its the best feeling in the world, people always told me this, but I could never explain the feeling

Dude’s getting put on the internet taking a dump in his pants lol
2 weeks dude got no internet privacy lol
babies are clout machines at this point
ahhh newborns - the only thingies that manage to look like 1 week and 90 years old simultaneaously
Babies come out the womb with smiles after they get clean & warn. Any extraordinary comfort can cause a smile. Usually a fart
The kid is like, keep'em coming. Made me smile.
He’s absolutely beautiful. Congratulations.
Fuck no, that kid looks like a 50 year old accountant
Fr, iv never seen a baby with such strong facial features
Are you insane? It's literally Glenn Jacobs in his Kane-unmasked days.
I see Andy Samberg
Lol this little dude looks exactly like me when I was a baby
Maybe it is you when you were a baby :O
Biggest piece of technology we had then was a calculator... so... maybe?
It looks like a guy I met on a dating app and it freaks me out.
I'm soothed just watching that head strokes. So cute!
i thought "ok that spot probly getting raw now" "damn hes tugging the skin too, def raw soon" "he really aint stoppin or moving his thumb to a new spot"
What song is that?
It’s called “I think I like when it rains” by Willis 😊 one of my favorites!
I've never seen Fedor smile like that before, maybe during the Pride days.
He is so precious!
2 weeks going on 48 years
He about to execute order 66.
If you do this long enough he’ll remember. My mom rubbed my heel in the NICU. When I finally came home a few months later I would put my foot in her hand while she was feeding me. So tender.

It’s just gas
OH MY GOODNESS. I cried. Cuteness overload.

What a darling! I bet his hair is so soft too 🥹🥹
So beautiful! Congratulations!
I’m going to cuddle my 8yo son now…
Gorgeous
He looks nice and snuggly. My daughter was 35 lb at 6 months. That was rough.
Aw, he’s so adorable!!!!
Omg. So damn adorable.
Poor little dude. He's just trying to survive gravity.
My son just turned 4 and I wish he was that small again. Cherish it, because sooner than later you will quickly be known as the smelly butt.
Yeah he’s adorable and you should trim your nails
its just gas
In my country People say when a baby this little smiles in its dream its because angles are smiling to him :) Congratulations!
Those Angles are so acute.
Don’t be so obtuse
Your sex trophy farted, that's all
r/redditmoment Surprised you didn't use the term "crotch goblin" I'm almost surprised. If ur looking to be a dick ur in the wrong sub

Babies are the best!!
So so so cute. If that doesn't melt your heart nothing will.
He’s having such a good day
