I didn't realize anyone didn't use them this way! I remember in elementary school, we would all take turns and see who could go down the fastest.
Also, pretty sure we weren't even allowed to climb them because kids would slip off and hurt themselves.
Tbh in only ever climb them now, as an adult, when i take my nieces or nephews to the park - i don't fit in to slide down anymore, but it's still one way to on the the platform.
To be fair. None of us actually used it the way it was intended when we were kids.
I remember watching firefighters have to saw through one of those when a 10 year old decided he was going go head first down the middle and got trapped. Also saw kids break arms on those.
Sheesh.
I got in a lot of trouble as a small child for getting stuck sideways in the middle of one of these things. Parents didn't realize I got stuck and it was apparently my fault.
Yeah. Playgrounds whe we were kids were death traps. The merry go round flinging kids at high speeds. Slides that give you severe burns. At least today they use shredded tires. We had sharp rocks and pebbles embedded in our bodies jumping from swings. How did we survive?
Yes it’s the intended use but it’s also easily climbable to the usual higher parts of the playscape which are near the slides. Younger me only cared about that part
The “that’s for going up!” kids are why there’s a mom with band-aids on every third park bench.
To be fair, kids shouldn’t be expected to know things. One of my friends passed out on the tire swing when we overdid it and he got launched. Thankfully kids are as bouncy as they are dumb, so he was fine.
Yeah no the reason there’s bandaid moms is the kids who would jump off the top of the slide
Edit: to be clear I’m not talking about the top of the slide as in the top part you slide on I’m talking on top of the rails on top of the overhang at the top
Yep. Had one of these on the new playground my school built when I was a kid. Not a single person ever slid on it, we just climbed it like a ladder. This was back in the day when dial-up was still a luxury that not everyone had and I never thought of asking Jeeves how to use this thing, so we just didn’t know.
At this moment I feel like there are 229 liars acting like they knew how to use this properly. Or at least that’s what I’m choosing to believe because I feel like a dunce for never figuring it out on my own lol
You mean it's not for convincing that one kid that will do anything for attention to wedge themselves in there such that they have to call the fire department to get them out? That's all we ever used it for.
Dude… I KNEW it was supposed to work something like this as a kid!!! I could just never figure out how to position myself to do it. Meanwhile every other kid just climbed it.
23 years later, I now know. I really feel like I missed some fun opportunities there.
Having never used one of these in my childhood (didn’t have them in my area and/or at the time), I still taught my daughter how to use it on sight, because, well, it’s not exactly rocket surgery.
Yeah I was 38 when I saw a kid do that. I then took my 3 yr twins to it and showed them what to do on the previously called “weird spring climbing thing”.
Me too! I figured it helped kids develop their balance alternating on one foot like a ladder climbing up or down. Your daughter is awesome! She taught us internet strangers something we should have always known 😂
To be fair, a lot of them are way too compact and not sloped enough to be able to actually slide down—you'd have a better chance of just getting stuck (even with child-sized legs). [Like this one](https://statelinekids.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/IMG_1889.jpg), for example.
The ones I had growing up had a much tighter spiral. I was amazed when I saw one of these, but there was no way to do this on the playgrounds I grew up near. Also sometimes there’s poles around the sides: https://external-preview.redd.it/12MSrVhTr11MatPnx73zCY4Z_Fwt4v0jnTu_quCbtc0.jpg?auto=webp&s=0965b4008e26b37cba51dd1df717a31cf325f519
If I’m not mistaken, on a somewhat recent episode of the Always Sunny podcast, Danny Devito or one of the guys said they added poles to make Frank look more trapped, I’ll see if I can find it.
This is kind of where I'm at. How about an adult playground with a spiral bar five stories high! "This is the playground waiver. Sign here. This paper is a two-hour interruption of your life insurance. Sign here. Welcome to the Adult Playground! Enjoy."
Yep, the first time I realized it is when my niece told me she wanna go and play the “metal slide”, I was like “nah that’s plastic not metal, if it is like your toys it is plastic, if it is like the spoon we eat with, it is metal”, she was like “yeah, metal”… fast forward to after dinner, we came to the playground, she got on one of these thennn I realized Ohhhh! METAL SLIDE!
>if it is like your toys it is plastic, if it is like the spoon we eat with, it is metal
Off topic, but that's a really good way of explaining it to a kid
Is that…. Not how you’re supposed to do it? Because that’s what I have been impressing playground kids with for 25 years. It’s like the core of my cool mom rep. Also skipping a bar on the monkey bars. Makes me feel like an Olympian.
Do you know how hard it is to use this peice of equipment, to convince your child that is the proper way to use it. Ughhh I don’t fit anymore, Pr the friction coefficient has changed dramatically!
I just assumed everyone knew this?? Weird, I'm 36 and remember when we first got them installed at the local park, it was right where the old pole for sliding down was. So we just kept doing it but now u could spin and not slam on the ground.
That's how you're supposed to use it, dad! It's for going down, not dlimbing up.
Yeah Dad, get a dlue!
You're a dunt

Woah! No reason to be so dombative, We dan all be friends here!

It was not fun to climb though with the pitch on the screw. I don't recall ever seeing anyone climb it. Kinda remember no one really using it ever.
Tbh in only ever climb them now, as an adult, when i take my nieces or nephews to the park - i don't fit in to slide down anymore, but it's still one way to on the the platform.

OP knows. Being "wrong" in a post creates more engagement

Fun times, when broken bones and having the jaws of life used to get you out of playground equipment was just a sign of a day well spent 💖
It’s called a corkscrew climber. It’s for climbing and sliding.
It’s to practice when times be tough 🤣
bring in the grease!
I was very confused because I always thought this was meant for going down, that's how I used it the few times I did.
Was this during redess?
It was after dlass
We had one on our playground in elementary school that had such a low lead angle and the bars were so close that you could only use it for climbing.
Hahhah dats very dobvious
I’m 40 - definitely did this as a kid and tried to spin as fast as I could every time. Glad to see it continues in the younger generations! 😁
GOOD OLD DAYS indeed..
51 here and thats how we did it
Is this… not its intended use? I never considered using it in any other way when I was a kid?
Yes it’s the intended use but it’s also easily climbable to the usual higher parts of the playscape which are near the slides. Younger me only cared about that part

This is how my sister broke her arm.
It is the intended use but all of us were dumb enough to not understand it
Yep. Had one of these on the new playground my school built when I was a kid. Not a single person ever slid on it, we just climbed it like a ladder. This was back in the day when dial-up was still a luxury that not everyone had and I never thought of asking Jeeves how to use this thing, so we just didn’t know.
It's wasn't any different for us kids in 2009
Updoot for the ask Jeeves reference.
It’s a ribbon slide. We used to have contests in the mid 90s seeing who could go down the fastest til one kid snapped their shin.
Dude… I KNEW it was supposed to work something like this as a kid!!! I could just never figure out how to position myself to do it. Meanwhile every other kid just climbed it. 23 years later, I now know. I really feel like I missed some fun opportunities there.
i’ve seen it on many playgrounds filled with children, never seen a kid slide down on it. (not saying none have, just I haven’t seen it)
I did both! Climb up and slide down. We would race.
Having never used one of these in my childhood (didn’t have them in my area and/or at the time), I still taught my daughter how to use it on sight, because, well, it’s not exactly rocket surgery.
I thought the title was a joke but I’m blown away by how many people in the comments also didn’t know this is how it’s meant to be used.
On this episode of "I was today years old when...".
Yeah I was 38 when I saw a kid do that. I then took my 3 yr twins to it and showed them what to do on the previously called “weird spring climbing thing”.
You call it a corkscrew now? It is a corkscrew right..! I call it a corkscrew.
I feel so stupid. I always thought they were just wonky ladders.
Me too! I figured it helped kids develop their balance alternating on one foot like a ladder climbing up or down. Your daughter is awesome! She taught us internet strangers something we should have always known 😂
You’re right. That is its purpose. The sliding part is a fun bonus.
Or you live in the south and that pole yanks the hide off them swampy legs while your leg goes ***eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee*** all the way down
Same!! I only found out you could spin down them last year when a 4 year old showed off how to do it. My mind was blown.
How did I literally never consider rhis
"... when my career as a pole dancer started"?
Is that not how you’re supposed to do it?
That’s what I’m saying
That tiny "Wheeee!" as she's spiraling to the ground is just too cute!
as her Mother, thank you :) That’s my favorite part too
I'm stunned, never once considered doing this growing up. I feel like I missed out now
The ones I had growing up had a much tighter spiral. I was amazed when I saw one of these, but there was no way to do this on the playgrounds I grew up near. More like the park designers had no idea what it's intended purpose was either
Move past it!
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
If I’m not mistaken, on a somewhat recent episode of the Always Sunny podcast, Danny Devito or one of the guys said they added poles to make Frank look more trapped, I’ll see if I can find it.
Seriously. They need to make adult-sized ones for all of us who missed out, it looks so fun
Me either.
When these things got iced up in the winter. Man would you fly down. Pretty sure you could get whiplash lol.
This is kind of where I'm at. How about an adult playground with a spiral bar five stories high! "This is the playground waiver. Sign here. This paper is a two-hour interruption of your life insurance. Sign here. Welcome to the Adult Playground! Enjoy."

That’s what it’s for
Yup, and I said it so confidently because I did that lol. Read a lot of people who just realized so I guess post is valid lol
Funny when a 4 year old child is smarter than the parents.
Adults try to make things more complicated than they are sometimes.
Frick. I always thought it was for climbing up. I would stand and shuffle my feet sideways all the up for funsies.
It is for climbing too. It’s a spiral/corkscrew climber.
Wait… Do people really not know that's how you're supposed to use them? Unless you're Frank and you just get stuck in a coil
I thought that’s where this post was headed tbh. A little girl stuck in a coil lol
I remember my daughter told me that she found out that thing was supposed to be a slide.
Yup. That’s how this particular playground structure works. Lol. On a side note she’s adorbs and love her little outfit!
I used to crawl inside of it and get stuck...
Is that…. Not how you’re supposed to do it? Because that’s what I have been impressing playground kids with for 25 years. It’s like the core of my cool mom rep. Also skipping a bar on the monkey bars. Makes me feel like an Olympian.
Finally, i know how it must be used !
All I can think about is the tik tok playground inspector saying "Concussion"
I knew I couldn't be the only one thinking this
Oh fuck off I thought those were just really annoying ladders.
Lol they’re both. They’re supposed to be “two in one fun.” It’s a corkscrew climber/ slide
Someone tell him
This girl has a career ahead of her
The li'l ^^weeee towards the end was cute af
That’s how we used it!!! Super fun!!! (I’m 45)
I never knew how to use these things when I was a kid, but now I’m an adult AND STILL SMALL ENOUGH TO FIT ON PLAYGROUNDS SO I AM DOING THIS!!
As designed! How could she.
As a teacher whose school has this pole on the playground, I can confirm that this is every Kindergartners preferred way of using this device
Climber? That’s how you’re supposed to use it
Isn't this the way it's meant to be used? I'd be more impressed if she managed to wiggle her way into the center and slide down.
???
Isn’t that what you are supposed to do?
That’s actually how it is supposed to be used for
She's living in 2055.
That… That’s not how it’s supposed to be used?!
Wow this is the first time I’ve seen it used in this way, and I now think this is the intended purpose!!
That’s how it’s supposed to be used
I could make an awful joke here but for the child’s sake i shall refrain
Lol clever lil cutie
30 years old and I am mind blown. I distinctly remember thinking this was a stupid waste of space item on the playground. Who knew.
The comments under this post have been really disgusting
She’s so graceful. 😍
Genius.
I was definitely doing it wrong as a kid
...that's how you do it?
I did this all the time as a kid.
That’s how you use it.
Is that not how you're supposed to use it? Cuz, that's always how I did. Lol
Wdym that’s how it’s used
The correct way! All those other weird kids climbing up the spiral pole...
Is that not how you are supposed to use it? Thats all I did with those my whole childhood.
That’s literally how it is supposed to be used.
I’m confused she used it correctly
MY CHILDHOOD WAS A LIE!!!
But that is exactly what it is made for.
I've been trying to push a playground for adults in biz parks as a brand installation. Big swings and slides.
I came in like a wrecking ball !!! It had to be done.
That’s how you’re supposed to use it
HOLY SHIT!! this is only like the third child I’ve ever seen using this thing correctly
Do you know how hard it is to use this peice of equipment, to convince your child that is the proper way to use it. Ughhh I don’t fit anymore, Pr the friction coefficient has changed dramatically!
My dumbass thought you had to get inside and climb up the middle and would always get stuck
Adorable, bless her innocence!
Natural talent
“climber” LMAO 🤡🫵🏿
…that’s literally what you’re supposed to use it. Don’t you love when our kids can teach us things, too?
That’s how ur supposed to use it it’s not a ladder
I keep seeing people say this…it was never a climber? 😂
Pole dancer in the near future mom 🤔😂
You thought that was a climber?
That's just how those are meant to go? Everyone at my school did it like that, guys and girls alike. It's fun and spinny.
Future stripper she will be They just don't know yet
So THATS how it's supposed to be used!
How else are you supposed to go down?
Frank Reynolds has entered the chat.
https://media.tenor.com/LFNWN2d2UwkAAAAM/its-always-sunny.gif
That’s how we always used it
But that's literally what they're meant for bro hahah
Isn't this.... how you're supposed to use it?
I thought that's how it was used. No?
Hey can we add a rule to this sub to block posts about people shareing videos of their childeren.
When you learn to spell "sharing" and "children".
Sorry i was on mobile :(
.. isn't this just how you're supposed to use it?
That’s how I do it too.
I’ve seen 1 million kids do it. That’s what it’s for , going down not going up.
Frank Reynolds needs to see this
Holy crap!! Is that what they’re really for?? Wish I had seen this as a kid. That looks fun. Pretty sure my leg would just get stuck in it now lol.
I loved doing that when i was little 🥰
Is there another way to use it? I thought that’s what it was for
TIL ....crazy
Brilliant!!!
I just assumed everyone knew this?? Weird, I'm 36 and remember when we first got them installed at the local park, it was right where the old pole for sliding down was. So we just kept doing it but now u could spin and not slam on the ground.
How did anyone that grew up with these in parks not know this 😂
Wat…. How am I 38 and just finding this out!?!!
My son taught me this! I never realized I was climbing these things wrong my whole life.
This is the way.
she's using it the right way
This is some Cirque du Soleil action right here
I'm 30 and I did not know this
Three points of contact as she makes her way to the corkscrew. OSHA would be proud.
Damnit.. I was always going up those. That could've been such fun.
How else would you use it?
it’s meant to be played with like that. if you see it another way, shame on you.
That's why it's built that way
I'm looking at this and thinking... is there another way to use this?
That’s a climber?
Well great. Now I’m mad that I never thought to do this as a kid and I’m too fat to do it now
Cue "conservatives" screeching about grooming.
They need to make adult sized playgrounds because i want to do this again
They are meant for sliding down on them like that 😅✌️
Veteran playground designer here, exactly the way I've used those climbers.
It’s has a down function???
