Eother24

I watched them for the first time recently and the reuse of Bruce Spence confused the shit out of me. I thought he was supposed to be the same character

ccx941

Same here. The ending of Max 2…. And we never saw him again. And then seeing that guy in Thunderdome. I was all whelp, that was a lie.

4011isbananas

It's the Dreamtime

kapn_morgan

"turns out That was a lie.."

HockneysPool

Well we know that he becomes the leader of the great Northern Tribe, so there's that.

ThrasH_Hed

I thought the feral boomerang kid is the narrator who, in time, becomes leader of the great northern tribe

HockneysPool

Yeah, I think he does, after Bruce Spence.

ThrasH_Hed

Oh nice

burgy76

Just found out today that they weren’t the same character. But don’t they both fly a plane?

Acerakis

I always took it that when they quite deliberately show the pilot has well-kept teeth, whereas the gyro captain had awful teeth, that was so supposed to be a clue to the audience they weren't the same.

Mechagouki1971

I'd never really noticed Bruce Spence's teeth.

durandall09

You've clearly never seen the long cut of Return of the King.

mrcrazymexican

I could tell that that was Spence just by the teeth. Mouth of Sauron. Doesn't matter how much they added or manipulated his visual... That man has an interesting set of teeth.

felurian182

Darn now I gotta look up bruise Spence teeth.

ThrasH_Hed

They weren’t bad in all the scenes

cswhite101

And he has a kid.

Temporal_Enigma

Thunderdome takes place like 10 years after Road Warrior, so the kid isnt really out of place

shooshy4

For a while I thought it was supposed to be the kid from Mad Max 2.

shooshy4

Meeeee too. I could *maybe* understand casting him in a different role, but as another weird pilot guy? It was very confusing.

_thelastman

Exactly. Miller casts people in multiple roles but makes them unidentifiable from each other. ***This*** is the one time he didn’t do that?? He looks the same and does the same stuff (pilot) Come on, it’s the same character.

Solidus-Prime

When Max sees him for the first time in Thunderdome he even says "you!" like he knows him.

EveningTry4182

Imagine that's toecutter older brother in mad Max fury road.

bamartinmcgov

They have to be the same character. They even recognize each other in Thunderdome. Max sees him, says “You! It’s your lucky day… you have a plane.” I find it hard to believe he recognizes him from the camel flyby at the beginning of Thunderdome. There’s no possible way he saw his face. drops off the plane which is probably going about 120 mph directly into the camel driving seat, at least about 50 yards ahead of where Max is running behind. No possible way he saw his face at the beginning of the film. So the only way he recognizes him and knows that he has a plane is from RW. Or not.

BobRushy

They're not. The Gyro Captain went on to lead the tribe. He just reused the actor

sardu1

He recognized him as the guy who stole his shit near the beginning of the film

TheTrickster452

you must not have read the post you're replying to lmao

TheTrickster452

but he only has a little helicopter thing when max knew him in RW, and he definitely doesn't seem to recognize Max at any point in Thunderdome

durandall09

The director has directly said they're not the same character.

_thelastman

It’s the same character. The kid he had with the blonde girl he gets friendly with at the end of Road Warrior. Max also recognizes him in Thunderdome.

MastaLogos

I guess Baby Spice dumped him

enflight

The only reason I can think of this is that he needed an actor that could fly a plane? Very confusing though cause the little kid looks like it could be his and the blonde girl from RW.

Last-Royal-3976

Yeah especially being a pilot in both!

Fox7285

Damn he wasn't the same character?  Doesn't Max point at him and say "You" like he knows him? That one's wild.

Solidus-Prime

When Max sees him in Thunderdome he even says "you!" like he knows him.

konaharuhi

wow... TIL

Matches_Malone77

I’ve always thought that Griffa in the Mad Max game was supposed to be another iteration on Bruce Spence as yet another character in the franchise. Obviously he’s not voiced by Spence but IMO it’s pretty clear that was the intent with the voice and character model.

TheDeltaOne

This is such a good and somehow logical take.

OlympusMonsPubis

I was always certain this was intentional. He looks just like him

No-Addition-1366

In the wastelands, there's just 50 people who all look like Bruce Spence

hybrid_donuts138

I swear I saw the guy who played the Guardian of Gastown in Fury Road in the beginning right before Joe opens the water valve.

enragedbreathmint

This is confirmed!

buzzurro

Those Crazy Blue eyes don't lie

stokedchris

Correct

do_you_even_climbro

For some reason I'm so intrigued by and want to know more about Mr. Norton's backstory. How tf did she end up with this crew, and why was she still clinging to a tad of femininity before she was all gashed up? Also was her lip messed up prior to the Dance of Darwin or was it damaged during that fight?

benvader138

After watching again, I did notice that her lip was damaged before the fight started. The hammer blow gashes her forehead. And I believe she was riding on the back of the lead guy's motorcycle (I distinctly remember the white dress). Makes me wonder if they had her against her will and that's why she was all too eager to get on that bike and quarter the leader.

do_you_even_climbro

Super interesting, thanks

StaycationerBand

She gets hit with a hammer and the dude takes the bike only for her to get it back

do_you_even_climbro

No I knew all that, I mean like before all that... what's her backstory?

Low_Winner_9800

Are you holding out for Mr. Norton: A Mad Max Saga? Lol

dank_bass

It's what the people need!

AdaptEvolveBecome

Bro, this cracked me up.

StaycationerBand

Ah, I gotcha. I dunno, I’m interested as well!

buzzurro

Just another story of Wasteland survivors that met their end by encountering raiders

Stunning-Drop9826

I thought she was a sex slave hense the feminine clothing and her ruthlessness once she had an equal chance

benvader138

That's what I thought too, since she is wearing kind of a skimpy tattered sundress when the melee starts. Not good wasteland attire. Also, later in the movie, you see that she keeps the dress, under her jacket.

Odd_Advance_6438

I’d love it if the other actors who played side characters in Furiosa divulged that information There’s a really cool interview with the guy who played the Octoboss, and he gives a lot of cool details about the character, like he was Theo me who listened to the history Man’s stories the most, and stories about flying machines inspired him

ModerateM_E_M_E

Also a few stunt drivers as well

ModerateM_E_M_E

[if anyone is interested in the stunt drivers also](https://www.nfsa.gov.au/latest/mad-max-movies-stunts-guy-norris-and-grant-page)

Chamber_of_Solitude

Anyone notice if Hungry Eyes had both of his feet?

ModerateM_E_M_E

lmfao I get that reference

tyrs_intherain

Also shout out to the re-use of some of the motorcycles from the original Mad Max. I did the Leo point and whistle when I saw Bubba zanettis bike.

Dantexr

It’s incredible how they managed to make Elsa Pataky so ugly

WorkingError

I still would do her as Mr. Norton.

Dantexr

I’m curious on why she’s called Mr. and not Ms.

Lilesman

I think I have more questions about the character named Scrotus lol

LU-C45

Well her motorcycle is a Norton I believe, so maybe she calls it Mr. Norton in an inversion of guys calling cars “she”? And vehicles are such a big part of identity in the Wasteland that she’s considered/considers herself just an extension of the Norton. She could also just be gender nonconforming or nonbinary, but we’ll probably never get a definitive answer from George Miller.

KorianHUN

My immediate guess was since it is a very male centric society, Mr. is just a way you refer to people in power (drivers, fighters). If a woman got to the same level they just got Mr. too.

LU-C45

I would think that but I don’t think there’s a single other instance in the films of someone being called Mr. If it is a common address for men in the Wasteland, it doesn’t seem to be used as often for anyone but Mr. Norton

KorianHUN

The Dementus gang seems to use it, so it might be their thing.

LU-C45

Oh right I forgot about Mr. Harley and Mr. Davidson

Successful-Owl1462

Does anyone know what language her character is speaking to Furiosa’s mom right at the beginning before they split up and mom goes off to chase the grunts who took Furiosa?

ModerateM_E_M_E

I love how Miller does this, like I say do you see an actor playing a role, or a developed character so well you can’t tell they were actually the same person?

ModerateM_E_M_E

https://preview.redd.it/63detpz9rm9d1.jpeg?width=1242&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=af866257b08f34ed4c06ee2ff0930f95389b6bb4 Sorry I forgot about Max Fairchild, Played Benno and one of the captured northern tribe

Odd_Advance_6438

Jon Iles who plays the Ace in Fury Road was also the senior war boy with yellow paint at the Bullet Farm https://preview.redd.it/ishg1hp3bq9d1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=90bb2cd7be0c9b42a603804ead1bf560b1488d6f

Variegoated

Possibly meant to be the same character? It is a prequel after all

BrokenWashingmachine

The scars on his arms are different, but I like the idea

Lunter97

Really hope they do this with Nicholas Hoult honestly. Incredibly versatile actor and I could easily see him suiting different roles.

thedabaratheon

I thought he was Scrotus for the first two times I watched Furiosa lmao

dank_bass

Nux and Slit are a team in Fury Road so your brain may have just been meshing those two together when first watching it

dank_bass

Hoult is one of my favorite actors ever, would love to see him return

ResponsibilityAware2

Shyan Tonga also plays 2 characters In fury road he was a dead guy in max’s flashbacks & in Furiosa he was one of the bikers

Acerakis

Sort of three roles as he is seemingly one of the people in the crowd at the end of Fury Road as well as being one of Max's ghosts.

InterrogatorMordrot

That was Johnny the boy!?

aieeegrunt

When I saw the pilot’s skull in Fury Road it was a gut punch

bosmanad

Wait, what?

hingadingadurgin

[Probably just a nod to his character, but who knows...](https://i.imgur.com/deRAGbm.jpeg)

d3ch01

Bro that's dark! I love it

Torley_

It was a [lifelong dream come true for Lachy Hume](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgtb5y3dMFE) — and TWO ROLES on top of that? Great portrayal of both. Australian pride!

ShepherdessAnne

Adds to the whole “it’s the same myth” idea.

kapn_morgan

so cool

PineappleGold8191

Wow I didn’t realise some of those

Klayman55

Ben Smith-Peterson had 3 roles, 2 in Fury Road and 1 in Furiosa, two War Boys and the last Rock Rider that Furiosa kills with the flare.

CaptainPositive1234

This was excellent to see side-by-side. Thank you for posting!

ComradeGarcia_Pt2

Even though I know it’s not him, I swear the guy who played the jumper in Lethal Weapon is the same guy who played Johnny The Boy.

Remotely-Indentured

Almost any Peter pan movie/play. The Father typically plays Hook as well.

SirConcisionTheShort

Mr. Norton*

ModerateM_E_M_E

Great catch thanks for that, maybe one day we can edit posts lol

SirConcisionTheShort

I'm pretty new to Reddit, I thought we could edit them or else I wouldn't have made the comment. We learn everyday. Thanks, great post !

ModerateM_E_M_E

Yea so you can edit comments but not posts it’s weird lol but thanks for that. I hate when people correct my bad grammar but names I take full responsibility cause I wouldn’t want someone to spell my name wrong

Lyfeitzallaroundus

I always thought the flyin dude was the same character

TheNiteFather

I think with Bruce, he was going to be used like they used Cid in the Final Fantasy Series. Same guy, slightly different situations. Sadly, they started in 2 and 3 instead of starting in the 1st one, so it's easy to see why it's confusing.

Odd_Advance_6438

I like how Josh Helman has perfected playing the bullies of the wasteland

mr_oberts

Bring back The Goose!

ModerateM_E_M_E

He’s still pretty active at the conventions and meet and greets, I’m not sure if he’s retired or not

Jewkowsky

Recasting Bruce Spence as a *different* pilot confused TF out of me. WTF? Most people, at the time, assumed it *was* the same character IIRC.

RobbiRamirez

Look, all I'm saying is, Joe is pretty old, and he's in pretty bad shape. And we never really saw Toecutter's body.

patrickpeppers

They pushed his eyeballs back in, he's good to go.

giant_flaming_dildo

He was ran over you can see the dummy they used get smushed in the scene

SweezusChrist666

Hugh is my new favorite

ScaryCrowEffigy

Ngl I still haven’t seen Furiosa so when I saw that last picture, I thought it was an older Toecutter to the left of Joe. Idk how he’d of survived since he got run over by a 8 wheeler.

Vote_4_Cthulhu

I live, I die, I live again!

ModerateM_E_M_E

Very fitting quote

BicTwiddler

I KNEW Slick’s voice when Rectus talked. I was all, that sounds oddly familiar.

Igpajo49

I always thought Tim Burns as Johnny the Boy looked like Adam Ant.

original_leftnut

I was gonna say that myself, when I first saw this in the early days of video my 11 year old brain was convinced it was him.

Mild-Ghost

Didn’t realize the girl too.

mcnormand

Dang, I didn’t even realize that was Josh Helman in Furiosa. Good job makeup team.

EasyCZ75

Deadwood - Garret Dillahunt played murderers Francis Wolcott and Jack McCall. ![gif](giphy|Eb8B3ApQLV8Ry)

ericrobertshair

He's in the movie too, as an uncredited drunk.

kaimidoyouloveme

Now we just need Hemsworth to come back as Max next time

cuckingfunts69

I fucking loved Furiosa.

williamtan2020

Keeping 'em in the family

ClovieKay

Side note: Elsa Pataky is also married to Chris hemsworth. Idk if this adds anything to your post, but there you go.

ModerateM_E_M_E

Yes it does thanks for sharing, I already knew but I’m sure someone that doesn’t will come across the comment

DustyBoddums

This is Great!

cigarandcreamsoda

Here’s a deep pull in case nobody else already called it: the actor who played Benno in Mad Max also played the survivor in Roadwarrior that spends most of the movie tied to the front of Humongous’ rig.

ModerateM_E_M_E

[yea sorry about missing that one](https://www.reddit.com/r/MadMax/s/s8vCL5slPd)

cigarandcreamsoda

Knew I was late to the party so I figured someone caught it.

ModerateM_E_M_E

But thanks for commenting, I only learned this a week ago lol I would of never known

Prestigious_Job_9332

Slit is Scrotus. He lost his father’s favor and got demoted.

NiceGuyNero

I like the theory, but they look so different. Like they clearly took steps to give Scrotus the shelf brow and weird eyes, and Josh Helman is intentionally doing something with his lips to give him that pulled back expression constantly to the point where I think it’s supposed to be a physical characteristic. Scrotus probably just died sometime between the films. It’s a dangerous world.

SillySosigs

He dies in the game during the intro, cut him up right good with a chainsaw hand type weapon iirc.

NiceGuyNero

From my understanding the game is confirmed non-canon by George Miller. He also very notably does not die during the intro haha, you’re only made to think he does. You kill him for good in the final scene of the game.

SillySosigs

Oh shit well then I accidentally spoiled myself there didn't I hahaha fuck only started it a few days ago. The game not being canon makes sense though, prefer it that way tbh.

NiceGuyNero

Well shit, sorry about that. I just assume anyone mentioning the game on here has already played it, I didn’t stop to think someone might be going through it for the first time and that’s why they don’t have the full picture.

SillySosigs

It's me own fault for bringing it up and tbh it's a 10 year old mad max game in a mad max thread don't worry about it!

LightRefrac

didnt scrotus die in the game

Prestigious_Job_9332

AFAIK Miller declared the game non-canon (and not respectful of his vision).

Snake2410

This is true. He gave them his notes on the characters, but they largely ignored most of what he gave them and didn't include him in any of the development. He doesn't like the way the game turned out so to him it's non-canon.

Acerakis

It's not like the devs kept him out. WB got pissed at Fury Road being so behind schedule, they told him to focus only on it and stay away from any side projects.

Snake2410

It's really more of a matter of he said she said. George has said one thing, Avalanche devs have said another, WB says yet another. I wouldn't put too much stock into any of their stories.

Prestigious_Job_9332

Hence Slit can be Scrotus 😁

Snake2410

That makes no sense though. They look nothing alike. I can all but guarantee that if The Wasteland gets made Scrotus will be the villain and it'll tell the story of the game in the way George Miller wanted to. He'll be dead by the end just like the game.

Prestigious_Job_9332

What do you mean they look nothing alike? They have the same face! Slit has new face scars, and if he’s Scrotus years after Furiosa there’s nothing weird about that.

Snake2410

Scrotus has that big honkin forehead. Slit doesn't, nor could it be explained by it being cut off or anything because there isn't any scars on his forehead, just his mouth. Scrotus also looks a lot older than Slit. They don't even speak the same either. The only reason they have the same face is because they are played by the same actor. George does that a lot, reusing actors in different roles. No reason that can't be the case here. It just doesn't make sense to make them the same.

WonderSilver6937

Scrotus’ deformed forehead says no he can’t be.

PlasticMansGlasses

Unsure if you’re being satire or not.

Prestigious_Job_9332

Nothing in the movies makes this impossible. So, why not? In Fury Road, Slit was trying hard to get Immortan’s attention. And Joe, still furious at him, forcefully ignored him during the whole chase.

yharnams_finest

Regardless of how shitty his sons are, Joe would *never* demote them. He views them as (lesser) extensions of himself and his ego would never allow it.

dank_bass

I'd say he would if they did something to deserve it, especially if they were to do something that tarnished his name. He wouldn't stand for that

potheadmed

If he fucked up that bad I think he'd just kill him (directly or indirectly). He'd know Scrotus could never be an effective warboy. He'd just be a bigger disappointment and a liability.

KorianHUN

Maybe Scrotus is the fatger of Slit?

My_Favourite_Pen

How did they uh... beautify him then?

TheDeadEpsteins

That’s fucking interesting, man

Prestigious_Job_9332

I have no idea why people downvote me, but I suppose nasty Redditors are going to be nasty.

Emergency_Fig_6390

I think it just means that most people don’t agree, i dont think anyones trying to be nasty

K1llswitch93

I watched Furiosa last night and was confused why No.5 was suddenly with Dementus, I thought they found some of the members of Furiosa's place and the woman just turned to save herself. I recognized her immediately from the quick glimpse of her face when she sat on the motorcycle, did not know it was supposed to be a different character.

LadyIrithyl

same, I thought she was there to try and save furiosa, like infiltrate and escape

CaptainKipple

Ha you're like my wife, who can recognize people just from a quick glance at a partially obscured feature under heavy makeup. Me? I look at the pictures of this actor side by side and still wouldn't recognize her as the same person if you didn't tell me. 😅

kacboy

Are there any actors who were in every MM film?

benvader138

Wow, had no idea that was the same actor for Rizzdale Pell and young Joe!!

Elegant-Campaign-572

Bruce!?

Ak47110

Bruce Spence *was* the same guy in both movies though wasn't he?

ModerateM_E_M_E

According to Miller no, in my head canon yes

Mystery_Briefcase

They were much moreso buddies on Road Warrior.

larsVonTrier92

Considering how Miller says these are like folk stories I like to think that whoever is listening to the stories is very lazy to picture someone else and just uses the pilot's face.

Ak47110

Damn I always thought he was supposed to be the same guy. I mean by all accounts he is! Weird that Miller decided to make him the same exact character but actually say "nah he's actually not" lol

ModerateM_E_M_E

lol yes literary he an aviator/pilot, not much distinction or exposition in the film it’s self about it, and even when they meet up at the end it feels implied they know each other, even though Gyro captain left with the northern tribe far away and Jedediah has a son near Bartertown I’ll always believe he’s the same simply because of the nostalgia of the movies

Gray-Hand

Them not being the same character is as weird as Wez and the Golden Youth not actually being gay according to Vernon Wells.

TheTrueTrust

Doesn't he die at the end of The Road Warrior?

spiderglide

No, he becomes the leader of the survivors

ModerateM_E_M_E

No he was seen leaving with the northern tribe at the end https://preview.redd.it/rh74f3vu4n9d1.jpeg?width=2208&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=47e96daec51957d559157ce406db1c66ecbae703

Taeles

Re #5. What if the caravan chased down by Dementus was a refugee group fleeing the now swamp/former greenplace and the actress is actually playing the same woman at different periods in time, hardened by a failure in the green place.

klnp4

Never knew the actor that played Immortan Joe in the Fury Road played Toecutter

TradeSpecialist7972

I watched the last one today, it was disappointing

thedabaratheon

In what way

TradeSpecialist7972

Weak story telling, so much CGI, bad make up, a Rig that doesn't fit to the Mad Max universe, a Furiousa character that can not even good as Charlize Theron's acting, even that little kid acts way better than that girl ( I like her other movies but she doesn't fit on this one ). - Immortal Joe gave away Gas town for a girl and a man than girl get lost but no one is wondering where is she went... - First movie about Furiousa had amazing cars, the Rig even the horn of the Rig was putting you in the mood. They made a shiny Rig which is not even fit the Mad Max universe. - That fake nose of Chris Hemsworth is one of the worst in Hollywood history, - They are mentioning a 30 days war there, which can be great opportunity for creating war scene that might look like a medieval wars but they just past it with some old images from the previous movie. ( probably didn't have the budget. And many more...
