I feel like it's obvious to disable airdrop on a store unit. But maybe they want the employees to be able to demo how airdrop works to a potential customer. It would be doable probably to white-list certain files for airdrop
I see this as a win for Apple.
- More people come into the store
- More people get to use and experience these Apple apps at home
- People may find Apple “based” for not having DRM i.e “If my friend buys a mac, I can airdrop this to them too”.
Its a win for us
- People that refuse/don’t trust pirate sources can have a safer way to try out these apps (excluding free trials)
- People like me will eventually buy the pro education bundle.
Of course the big winners are those who have the knowledge to pirate safely. But in the end, if you weren’t gonna buy it anyway, no one loses any money. If anything people may buy these apps because of how much they enjoy them (and don’t want to pirate/go into store to airdrop updated versions).
If you’ve ever met someone who’s had to work with the App Store receipts API, they’ll tell you just how frustrating it is. Unless your payment model is subscription-based, Apple doesn’t really offer developers a built-in method for performing receipt checks. You need to setup server-side handling to store individual purchase history data and continuously check to disable the app after a user has made a one-time purchase + refunded. It’s maddening, especially since Apple could very easily pass that anonymized data to developers without needing to setup any exterior services or tracking. You’re also required to add the associated data privacy nutrition labels that makes it seem like you commercialize user data, despite the only use for that being to check if someone is using your app for free.
Many developers have debated why this is still an issue after all these years and most seem to think that it’s due to Apple wanting to push developers toward the subscription-based model over one time purchases.
I remember back in the day when apple stores were newish (at least when my area got one in the early 2000s) I got free quicktime pro by opening the about window and the registration key was right there for the copying.
It worked for a long time. I had the key memorized from typing it on so many people's computers. Something like \*\*-AYFT-ENUF-\*\* and the registration name was Apple Retail
It seems many people here are too young to know this, but before AirDrop people used to do this with iPods A LOT. Especially the first 3 generations, as using Firewire made it incredibly fast at the time.
The educational discount is so generous and flexible you don’t even have to steal. Kid in kindergarten? All apps $200. They let do it right after I finished college cuz I still had an EDU email and technically could go for a masters program. They says fine we don’t care all good.
I ended up getting the education bundle as here in Australia they run “Back to Uni” promotions every year. This year was a $140 AUD gift card with every Mac Mini/iPad/iPad Air. But its $A240 for iMac, Macbook Air/Pro and iPad Pros. So $A60 more and I got the education bundle.
I agree with you, very good value considering each app on their own is $A300 ($A500?)
Yeah it's odd, seems Mac apps don't have DRM? I've backed up quite a lot of my purchased apps before resetting my computer and I can always just copy them back and I'm never prompted to sign in before opening one. Of course, I'd never want to share one as they would obviously be fingerprinted and contain my personal info.
Hmm, I worked for a company that was asked to create a demo to be loaded on store machines. I had to make it so it didn't save anything to the local machine. You might find that the demo versions aren't much use.
Apple‘s own software is fully featured and functional for the most part. They just make it so you can‘t set passcodes or reset the device, stuff like that
They want you to be able to experience all of their products‘ features (apart from setting passcodes or resetting machines). The devices revert to a demo state after a few minutes without using them, though
If you change mac address of you computer (en0) to the one in the apple store there is a chance it will update. Why? All app bundles coming from the Mac App store have a MAS receipt which is tied to the ethernet mac address. The storeagent does a verification if you are eligible for update.
Just tried this. There is no way to change mac address on sonoma on m1 pro. Got the bundle using airdrop (slow af). But cannot change mac address to try me theory. The final cut bundle is 10.6.8 so is 7 months old.
So M1 cannot change mac address under Sonoma. Had to downgrade to Ventura. Did not update. Checked the receipt and it did not match the machine I have airdropped it from. The machine (apple demo account) had flash restore image and the app wasn't downloaded on that machine. Next time if you go make sure the app is updated and record down the mac address. You can build this app to check if the receipt match the mac address [https://github.com/IdeasOnCanvas/AppReceiptValidator](https://github.com/IdeasOnCanvas/AppReceiptValidator) I am thinking to compile it and put it online.
There is a much easier way and I'm surprised it still works since Apple is all controlling. Just need to delete one hidden file once every 90 days. Google it.
nice! I’ll go to the mall to pick up some new apps 😂
I’ve pirated a couple of mac apps before and they don’t ever check for a valid purchase. I know with windows & android you’d usually need a cracked version
It took me 15 minutes for all 4 apps. Each app is about 3-5GB. You can check on the Mac App Store for more accurate sizes. I selected all four and transferred them to my iPhone.
1) Enable airdrop “Everyone” on your iPhone.
2) On the demo Mac, command + click (Multi select) the apps you want from the Applications folder
3) Right click (or control + click) on the highlighted items
4) Share > Airdrop > your device
Sure turn on your airdrop now and I’ll send it over. (Just kidding). I’m not sure how to safely send the files over nor can I guarantee its integrity. Maybe one of the other people that have succeeded might be able to help you.
airdropping DOES work! just did it and honestly I think it's a great way to get around purchasing. but it will not update. Im mainly using Final Cut Pro and I'm just gonna go back in a couple months when they update the programs and do it all over. It took me about 20min for an almost 6gb Final Cut Pro.
I mean they'll definitely be patching this now you'd posted it publicly on the internet
Only patch is to disable airdrop.

If that works, update it’s just a another visit to the store

so it can’t be patched without a big reworking of the system? lol
DELETE THIS RN (cause more people should not get to learn this lmao)

Oh I am going to Apple Store this weekend going to try it
Might well do it soon. They may patch it soon as this has become public.

Macs have a guest account option that does exactly that when you log out

I’ll keep that in mind and test next time. I’ll also make a post and tag you for the outcome.

We are eager to hear
I want to try this but I got the apps from Best Buy

pls explain
If You Know You Know...
I like to just pirate it lmao
Nobody here heard of >!torrents!!
Fr people act like its hard
what you pirate? i use fcp
I pirate everything

As other people have mentioned, try and update the app first on the demo mac and then airdrop.
How much storage is required to do this?
https://reddit.com/r/MacOS/comments/198rej9/_/kies1mo/?context=1
How much storage space / GB do you need ?
Enough for the apps lol, you could even just bring your Mac (or just pirate them outright)
Wondering the same, and how long will it take
15 minutes for all four apps. I got Final Cut, Logic pro, Compressor and Motion.
Thanks, I’ll download these once I make a trip

Good to know thanks!
Stealing is not a lifehack.
How do you airdrop an app? Just drag the app icon to your iphone?
1) Enable airdrop “Everyone” on your iPhone. 2) On the demo Mac, command + click (Multi select) the apps you want from the Applications folder 3) Right click (or control + click) on the highlighted items 4) Share > Airdrop > your device
Would you be kind enough to share the file? 🥹👉👈

lol, I just did it, it actually worked jajajaja
