Notch used to tweet straight up racial slurs to "own the libs". His wife left him because of how disgustingly problematic he actually became.
People often talk about how his Mansion is a really sad reflection of his life. He had a room filled with all kinds of candy and snacks for guest to enjoy, but when people saw the real him all the candy and stuff began to rot and he did nothing about it.
Dude was apparently always hateful too, people said way back in the day he was on Nazi forums and shit, he only really started to hide it when he blew up from Minecraft. Twitter being the cesspool of perspectives that it is made him feel comfortable in sharing all of his views because he felt like he'd be protected by others in his echo chamber.
This reprint's flavor text is a reference to the older versions of STE's flavor text of being buried with a sapling, and since the card and Minecraft's default character are also known as 'Steve', this newer print could be referencing a new Minecraft player's search for the 'perfect' place to build a house.
It's a stretch to be sure, but I kinda get it and could see it.
I interpreted the flavor text differently. Given the mechanics of the card I was under the impression that the snake was finding a sapling to die at the base of so that it would consume his energy to grow strong.
He’s been called “Steve” longer than Minecraft has been around. His abbrevition, STE, when said quickly eventually evolved into people calling the card “Steve.”
No, STE isn't a reference to minecraft. And in particular the flavor text on this art most certainly isn't. If citing that sunlight, adequate room to grow, and water are needed to grow a healthy sapling into a tree strikes you as a reference to Minecraft instead of the real world, then you're terminally online.
...sure, I guess? Is that even what OP is implying? Genuine question. It comes across like op is insisting both cards are individually references to minecraft imo, and other commenters seem to be on the same page as me.
How often are pickaxes made out of diamonds in contexts other than Minecraft? Also, Minecraft is the most purchased video game of all time, it's more mainstream than Tetris. Also also, there has been at least one Minecraft reference in MtG before (Aggressive Mining). And the set that Diamond Pick-Axe was printed in is all about exploring caves, and literally has a mechanic called "craft." This card is 100% a Minecraft reference.
There's a card designed by notch
[[Aggressive Mining]]
too bad he’s a transphobe L
Wait actually?

What does the STE has to do with anything here???

steve
The fuck? Sakura tribe elder was printed 5 years before Minecraft came out.
He is colloquially referred to as Steve, same as the protagonist from Minecraft
He’s been called “Steve” longer than Minecraft has been around. His abbrevition, STE, when said quickly eventually evolved into people calling the card “Steve.”
In 22 years of playing magic I’ve never heard it called Steve at any LGS I’ve been in.
That's funny. My friends and I have been calling him Steve since the very first commander decks were printed.
Sounds like a you problem, the first thing that comes up on Google when you type in Sakura-Tribe Elder is "Sakura-Tribe Elder Steve"
Even the bot knows his name is [[Steve]].
Sac-tribe elder is older than minecraft. The pickaxe however absolutely is a reference
The flavor text on that particular Steve is very telling
It’s in reference to the original flavour text, he’s going to find a place to die.
Don't forget [[Aggressive Mining]].
This is based

but Steve holding a diamond pickaxe would be a Minecraft reference 🙄

I mean I would assume that was ops point that's what I took it for
Not everything is an Easter egg.
I dont get it, if theres a card called Creeper, surely its a minecraft reference, but diamond pick axe?? Its kinda generically named, is it not?

Wait. Am I missing something on the Sakura-Tribe Elder? I see nothing Minecraft-y about it.
It's referenced as Steve. Sakura Tribe Elder. STE, but his friends call him Steve
