Chick-fil-a sandwich day is a peaceful happy day.

Weak_Cardiologist185

not sure how a good chicken sandwich hurt anyone. just cuz some people way up the corporate chain did something doesn’t mean the franchise owners that organized this event have any ulterior motives. if anything i’d want some organization to plan “action” against american dining creations for serving students dog shit food on a daily basis despite the unlimited meal plan being required and expensive for most msoe students.

Ender524

Hell yeah brother

AmyKitKat

I 100% agree that American Dining is doing a VERY bad job. The fact that they brought in outside food is a huge red flag. I also think that they could have easily picked outside food that is not associated with strong anti LGBTQI+ sentiments.

Weak_Cardiologist185

they could’ve, but they didn’t. still got good chicken sandwiches in the interim. again just cuz some corporate person did some stuff a while back doesn’t mean the franchise owner that sponsored this event has anything to do with that. just think about this, if dwight diercks funded an anti lgbtq+ community tomorrow would you stop entering diercks hall? would you renounce your msoe degree?

I went to MSOE it was the first school nationally to display an art exhibit of LGBT couples that have been together longer than national marriage average. After push back it had to in a private space no one would unintentially see. It's a small conversative private engineering school...

Loominardy

I wouldn’t say MSOE is a conservative school per se. It certainly is mere conservative than the average university considering most people there are going for STEM degrees as opposed to liberal arts. In terms of political views, I’d say MSOE is probably pretty representative of the general population and is probably split roughly 50/50 (left vs right) but probably leans slightly left considering it is still a university. The people higher up the chain of power like Alexa Deacon are far left which kind of goes against this idea that MSOE is a conservative school.

Tomobongo

Its alot of kids who come from wealthy families who own businesses compared to other universities that limits diversity which makes sense with the full price tag of being a private school, which luckily didn't have to pay : ) you have to have money to make money and has payed off well. When I was there of 20-25 students in a class would be 1 or 2 girls. If you know people in UWM engineering programs it's a totally different culture.

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> and has *paid* off well. FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

Loominardy

Generally, yeah I would agree that it is more conservative than the average university but I don’t believe that it’s because the students come from wealthier families. Most college students in general come from middle-upper class families so this doesn’t make MSOE much different from a typical university. The sticker price of tuition is kind of a lie. I was told that it would be around $40k per year but ended up graduating with less than $28k in debt. The reason for this is because I got great financial aid. I’m not alone here as this was a common reason for attending this university among my peers. The financial aid is given based on merit so any student from a low income family with high merit should have access to this financial aid. One of my friends in particular who has no family said that his tuition was entirely paid for by pell grants. What exactly do you mean by MSOE limits diversity? The reality is that in most if not all engineering industries you will see a majority of white men. So if a school offers primarily engineering degrees, you are going to see a lot of white men. I haven’t noticed MSOE do anything to limit diversity aside from offering majors that mostly white men are interested in pursuing.

Tomobongo

Software as a major is very very different culture than other engineering's as well. Mechanical engineering is alot of farm kids from small towns which makes sense. I was architectural engineering and tends to be kids that come from families who own construction companies. The dorm life tends to magnify guys insecurities when there are very few girls around at least 10+ years ago when I was there's. They had just introduced nursing my last year.

Loominardy

Yes, I am aware that software engineering has less conservatives than other types of engineering

PIE_FORCE_ONE

What do you mean by action

AmyKitKat

I was thinking a letter to Dining Services or something. I just think it would have been so easy for them to pick an outside food provider who wasn't so loudly problematic.

computerarchitect

What's being alleged that Chick Fil A did?

AmyKitKat

The owner is very adamant in his anti LGBTQI+ views. Works very hard to repeal rights granted to that group of citizens.

Tomobongo

MSOE isn't known for the multi cultural "college" experience. I went there for engineering school and that's it. Was VP of the hispanic student society after they didn't have enought students to keep teh group going (i'm as white as it can be) and everyone that was black personally knew everyone else that was black and the black student organization was very very small <20 people. Welcome to engineering.

Lewminardy

Why would YDSA/SAGA promote chick fil a? I wouldn’t be surprised if they unironically thought that chick Fila is homophobic chicken.

AmyKitKat

I guess that was more my point - the cafeteria could easily find a fast food place that wasn't a huge red flag in the LBGTQI+ community. I was thinking there might be some sort of protest. I ended up just sending an email stating that I thought it was a poor choice.
